By producing this documentary, Sida would like to show
that when every person and organisation do something
it is possible to create a sustainable future
and reach the Global Goals.
Now we will follow two people who want to do their part.
"For a hopeful person, in a sustainable society"
Welcome to BeChange!
For 8 months, 25 people from Luleå in Northern Sweden
will participate in the sustainable journey of a lifetime.
By going on a carbon diet,
the participants will reduce their climate impact caused by..
.. what they eat,
the home they live in,
and their means of transportation.
In order to be successful in their carbon dieting,
the participants receive mental coaching,
just like elite athletes do to top perform.
So BeChange works with both tools from mental training
as well as practical and physical changes in how to reduce their climate impact.
But more about that later,
now it's time to meet our participants!
Andreas Wåhlström lives in Karlsvik, just outside of Luleå.
He lives there with his partner and three children.
Andreas takes care of school and educational management in Boden municipality.
But right now he is on parental leave.
Andreas greatest interest is music and he often plays music at the clubs in Luleå.
Our other participant is Linnea Sandberg.
She is also on parental leave as well as studying part time.
Linnea lives in Sunderbyn, just outside of Luleå with her partner and two kids.
Linnea like to spend time in nature, exercise and to do creative things.
Together we will follow Andreas and Linnea on their journey with BeChange
towards a greener and more sustainable lifestyle.
The three largest sources of carbon emissions are:
transportation, food and the home.
Today we will take a closer look at food.
"Food"
Meat, dairy, vegetables and grains all contribute
to atmospheric carbon emissions.
In order to decrease carbon emissions globally,
it's crucial that the human population
starts eating more climate friendly.
You can for example do this by
eating less meat, eat seasonal produce
choose organic and by growing your own food.
BeChange goal is to reduce the participants carbon emissions by 125 ton CO2/year
while their quality of life and hopefulness increases.
We are in Luleå and Linnea and Andreas are about to take their first steps
towards creating a more sustainable and climate friendly lifestyle.
Studiefrämjandet is situated in the middle of central Luleå.
It is here, the mental coach Ann Murugan
and climate adviser Stina Sundqvist
will guide Linnea and Andreas on how to fill in two online questionnaires.
In the 1st questionnaire, Ann measures their levels of climate anxiety & hopefulness
based on their feelings when thinking about environmental problems and a sustainable future.
Stina is using the 2nd questionnaire to calculate their weight in carbon emissions/year.
This questionnaire is based on factors such as, what they eat and how much.
For example how long they shower, their electricity usage & home temperature setting.
And how they transport themselves from point A to B.
Everything from how they get to work to how they travel long distance. Pretty much everything a person does in a year is considered.
Stina, how do you calculate their carbon footprint?
We use something called the Climate Account (klimatkontot), developed by the Swedish EPA.
There you can log in and answer questions about your lifestyle. Then the weight of your carbon emissions will be calculated.
The weight is based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) which tell you the environmental impact of a product's life.
So can I use this tool to calculate my carbon footprint?
Yes, everybody can log on to klimatkontot.se and "weigh" their carbon emissions.
Also, you can calculate your carbon footprint now and again
and see your progress and development as you try new things that works for you.
Thank you!
Now we will talk to Linnea and Andreas to find out what made them apply to BeChange!
To be honest,
it was actually my partner who thought I should apply for BeChange.
When I read about BeChange and the concept I found it very interesting and exciting.
And I know I must improve!
It's exciting to receive help to decrease the negative effect I have on the climate.
It is such a big issue, I found it hard to know where to begin.
Instead it's easy to put your head in the sand and do nothing - even though it's always something you can do.
How do you feel now when you are about to start your biggest sustainability journey ever?
I feel nervous
and it feels both a bit hard and challenging
but also that it is going to be fun!
It feels really exciting, this will be a great challenge!
How hopeful are you that we will succeed in creating a sustainable future here on Earth?
I´m not that hopeful, it doesn´t feel like enough people are taking these problems seriously enough.
What do you think will be hardest to change in regards to what and how you eat?
I think the hardest thing will be finding food that my partner will like eating
especially if it's going to mean less meat.
And the same with my kids, they only like black pudding and hot dogs!
Well, I was going to say that I only eat meat.
But I do eat vegetarian food occationally.. But yes, I do eat a lot of meat,
I have always eaten a lot of meat.
So now I have to start to rethink when I plan and cook food..
Get the kids to like vegetarian food.
Oh this is going to be really tough.
You are going to be fine Andreas.
But now let's look at your results from the 2 earlier questionnaires.
"Weigh-in"
After the "weigh-in" we can see that Linnea has a carbon emission weight of 7.6 ton CO2/year.
Andreas has a carbon emission weight of 15.5 ton CO2/year.
For Food, Linnea's carbon emission weight is only 0.7 ton CO2/year.
Andreas' is really heavy! His carbon emission weight is 5.5 tons CO2/year.
With all 3 parts included, the average Swede weighs about 11 tons CO2/year.
For food consumption alone, the average Swede weighs about 2-3 tons CO2/year.
Now it's time to let Linnea and Andreas know their "weigh-in" results!
Hi Andreas! Hello
We calculated your current carbon emissions weight - 15.5 tons CO2/year.
Linnea, your total carbon emission weight is 7.5 ton CO2/year.
How does that make you feel?
Well, when we did the "weigh-in", already then,
I felt that this is not good.
No, it didn´t feel good at all.
When I answered the questions I realised "Shit, I'm really over-consuming!"
Now that you know your results,
do you feel you want to reduce your meat consumption?
Yes, mostly I realise I have to decrease my meat portion sizes.
I realise that when I eat meat, I eat a lot of meat.
Every time I eat meat I tend to eat a lot of meat. That is something I have to decrease.
Is there any food you don´t want to give up?
Umm…butter.
Linnea, you already eat a lot of vegetarian food. What is your goal?
I´ve been thinking about becoming a vegan,
but then I think sandwiches really need butter to taste good. And cheese too.
What about you Andreas? What type of food will you miss?
I love to barbecue.
What will my summer be like if I don't barbecue meat?
It feels boring when I think about it.
Now summer is turning into autumn
and all of the BeChange participants are meeting each other for the 1st time.
After a warm welcome and a climate show
performed by Staffan Lindberg, one of Sweden´s most experienced person
in the area about carbon dieting.
The participants get some useful information about how different climate friendly lifestyles may look.
The information will be given by Stina, who is our climate advisor.
If I love meat and I want to eat a big juicy steak on Friday and Saturday.
I can compensate it by introducing vegetarian meals.
Think that it's the sum of what you eat that matters.
What type of knowledge will you share with the participants?
I will help participants compare the need for different foods vs that food's climate effect.
Eating is a lot more enjoyable if I know the food benefits biodiversity as well as the producer.
And also a positive effect for my own health and the climate.
Alright! But do I have do become a vegetarian?
No, you don't have to become a vegetarian. But it would be best for the climate if we all did. Or even better, vegans.
But that does´t work for everybody. Many still wants to eat meat.
What you can do is to make maybe half of all your meals vegetarian or vegan.
And when you do eat meat, you eat less meat, so that we don´t consume as much as we do today.
Also, when we eat meat, we choose to eat better and more climate friendly meat.
It's not that every meal has to be climate friendly, organic, local and seasonal. It can be hard to plan like that before a meal.
It´s the big picture of what we eat that is important, and that we make conscious choices. That´s what makes it work in the long run.
Thank you. Now it's time to check in with the participants and see how they are going since the "weigh-in".
Have you thought about anything in particular?
Yes, I got a bit anxious over my results. I've been thinking about them quite a bit.
I have been thinking about what kind of groceries I buy.
I've started thinking more about the seasons and what food is in season.
I have also been thinking about how I can learn more about vegetarian recipes.
What will you take with you from this lecture?
That I should start and try to eat vegan food.
What will you take with you from this lecture today? Have you learned something new?
Yes, the list stating different foods and their carbon emissions was interesting..
Is there something you will change immediately?
I could start eating more vegetables. But for it to work in the long run, it has to taste good.
I believe in the flexitarian.
I will continue meat eating but I can definitely start eating much more vegetarian food.
Above all, my plate will probably look a lot different. It doesn´t have to be a lot of meat with something small beside it.
I can consider other type of protein sources as well. Such as beans, potatoes and vegetables.
Yes, well. I´m already a vegetarian, so that´s pretty good.
But then I didn´t know that dairy products had such a big impact that they actually have.
Then I thought that it´s really not that much I will miss.
What do you think you will miss?
Well, I will miss butter on my sandwiches.
To change one´s habits is not always easy.
That is one of the reasons why the participants will get assistance from Ann Murugan.
She is a mental coach in sustainable development and specialises in climate psychology.
Why is the psychological part so important?
It´s to enable the participants in BeChange to top perform.
And how does that work?
To reach their goals, participants will get help to change how they view problems.
To move away from dwelling so much on
all the world's environmental problems.
And change your focus to:
How do I want my sustainable
and climate friendly life to look like?
What do the solutions to
the environmental problems look like?
So the focus changes from the problems
to the solutions.
That change in focus will allow me to make the changes I want.
Instead of spending a lot of time & energy focused on problems
I start spending my energy on creating a way forward, towards the solutions.
It's not a case of ignoring environmental issues or their causes
or burying our heads in the sand.
But when we get stuck in what´s difficult, it's likely to stay that way.
And we become part of the problem.
And we start to feel bad,
our hope for the future decreases,
our climate anxiety increases etc.
I suggest putting 5% of your time & energy on understanding the environmental problems
and 95% on the way forward and the solutions.
That´s when great things start to happen!
Alright, so how did the participants feel at the "weigh-in"?
Andreas was very hopeful about a sustainable future on Earth.
He didn't have any climate anxiety.
Linnea's results were different.
She had climate anxiety and didn't feel hopeful for the future.
Practically speaking, how will the participants start working?
For example, they will construct a vision of how their
perfect climate friendly life would look like.
I advise them on what to do if they catch themselves
focusing on things they want to avoid.
For example if you want to change from being a meat eater
to being a flexitarian, but you only think about the problem - the meat.
So you think "I shouldn't eat meat, I want to avoid meat".
This is an example of when you have become stuck in the problem.
Instead focus on what you want.
Visualise yourself eating in a climate friendly way and as a flexitarian.
Then you become more effective and it's a lot more enjoyable to make changes.
When you focus on: "I want to be flexitarian
because I care about my health,
it tastes good,
and I care about this planet we all live on".
Feed yourself with these positives of making the change
instead of focusing on what you want to avoid.
This is a very effective and easy way to achieve your goals
in an uplifting way.
It´s the motto of BeChange. "Do more of what makes you happy".
If you do that
you will automatically go towards the solutions and where you want to be.
Thank you Ann.
Linnea, now you have gone some way on your journey. How do you feel?
It felt a bit difficult
after I planned to start buying more vegan food.
But I haven't started yet, so it feels slow and difficult to make changes. But it feels like something I have to do.
But after today, I'll start thinking this is something I WANT to do, instead of thinking I HAVE to do it.
What will you do to become more hopeful?
Stop watching all the news. I've already done that with other types of news because I don't like seeing all the misery.
I will start focusing on solutions rather than the problems.
Autumn turns to winter and the participants continue their journey. Today they're searching for new climate friendly recipes that can inspire.
Andreas, I hear that you haven´t eaten meat in three weeks. Is that true?
Yes, isn´t it crazy? How did that happen?
Yes, how did that happen?
I think it´s because I bought cooking books that were very inspiring and good. I just started with one recipe that was super tasty.
And then I had to continue with the next recipe and the next and so on.
And then Ann asked me how long I´ve been cooking like that. I started thinking about it and realised it´s been more than three weeks.
It just happened, it wasn´t something I planned.
What are you doing right now?
Now we are planning some kind of food for our fantastic cooking get-together.
Where we will taste everyone's cuisine and be inspired by each other. It will be like a buffet.
Together we will come up with a recipe, go grocery shopping and then cook the meal.
We will try and take the step from vegetarian to vegan food.
OK! Linnea - how's it going with your plans to transition from being vegetarian to vegan?
Quite good. I stopped eating a lot of dairy products but I still put milk in my coffee.
Ok. And some slices of cheese here and there.
We also eat a lot less fish. We also stopped the 2 vegetarian days each week when the whole family would eat vegetarian.
Now we have two vegan days instead.
So yes, everything is going quite ok now.
Sounds great! Now it´s time to go grocery shopping.
What kind of food will you buy?
We'll buy ingredients for an Indian Dhal stew that we decided to make.
We will also make Naan Bread.
Sounds delicious! What have you got so far?
Onion, garlic, chili, ginger, carrots, chive.
What are you looking for now?
Oat Milk.
Oat Milk, why?
Well, it´s this thing about dairy products, which comes from cows. Now were cooking a vegan recipe.
So that´s why we use Oat Milk.
What you are holding?
This is an Oat Milk that you can put in your coffee and also foam. Just like regular cow´s milk if you want a Caffé Latte. So that´s great.
That´s great. Now you can continue to put milk in your coffee.
Yes, exactly. It works just fine.
Good to hear.
Now we are passing the meat section. How does that feel Andreas?
The strange thing is that I´m not at all interested in meat right now.
It´s only been a month that I haven´t eaten any meat. But, I have no cravings at all.
Earlier you said that you wanted to barbecue in the summer - what are your thoughts about that now?
Well, if I feel like it then I will probably barbecue some meat. But right now I don't feel like it.
How´s your health since you stopped eating meat?
My health…I feel better and more alert. But there's no report showing that so I can't say for sure. But I do feel better.
You bought so much food. You are only cooking one meal. How much are you going to eat?
We'll cook 12 portions since we're having a buffet and we also want to bring home some lunch boxes.
Is it more climate friendly to cook more food?
Yes it is. Since you´re already using your kitchen appliances it´s more climate friendly to cook more at the same time.
Good, now you are done grocery shopping. See you in the kitchen!
Now we are in the kitchen!
Yes indeed. This is where I belong and feel at home.
What are you doing Linnea?
I´m preparing the vegan Naan Bread.
How is it going, adapting to a vegan diet?
I´m still adapting, I´m not a vegan yet. It´s pretty hard because you use dairy products more than you think.
Ok. Have you found any good alternatives to dairy products yet?
Yes, especially cooking cream has good alternatives, such as oat cooking cream and soy cooking cream.
Products like that are easy to exchange and there is almost no difference in taste.
What are your thoughts about food now compared to before?
Now I think more about the food's origin, if the veggies are in season, if they haven't been transported by plane.
Andreas, is it harder to cook climate friendly food?
Yes, in the beginning. It was harder in the beginning.
When I just started with something and I had no idea what to do with it, a turnip for example.
But after a couple of weeks when I had tried different recipes I had a few good recipes that I could return to.
What makes this meal climate friendly?
It doesn´t have any meat. Instead it´s based on root vegetables.
Why did you choose to cook this particular meal?
We found it online and we both like to order it in restaurants. So we thought it was a good choice.
What are your side dishes?
We have a yoghurt sauce with mint and the Naan Bread that I´m trying to make now.
We also have these carrots that Andreas has made before, which are really tasty.
Is it more expensive to eat vegan food?
I´m thinking that root vegetables are cheap and lentils and beans are cheap.
What´s more expensive is if you buy vegetarian meat substitutes. They´re usually a bit expensive. They can cost as much as real meat.
Do you feel that it takes longer time to cook climate friendly food?
No.. no it all depends on what you are cooking.
A couple of days ago I made a wrap with vegetables, it took 10 minutes.
But like now, we are roasting root vegetables in the oven and that takes an hour.
It all depends on what you are cooking.
The more love you give the vegetables the better they taste.
Sounds good. Now it´s time to set the table and bring out the food.
How do you think your carbon emission weight has changed?
My hope and belief is that the change is positive, of course.
Do you dare to guess your weight?
What was my starting weight? Ok, 5.5 ton CO2/year for food.
My hope is that I decreased my "weight" by half.
Linnea, what are your thoughts about your "weight"?
I don´t think the change is that big if you calculate in ton because I already had a very low carbon emission "weight" for food.
Maybe I decreased from 0.7 ton CO2/year to 0.6 ton CO2/year for food.
"Weigh-out"
We have now calculated your total carbon emissions "weight" again.
Your total carbon emission "weight" is 7.2 ton CO2/year for food, transportation and the home calculated together.
You decreased a lot more than you hoped, you decreased as much as 0.4 ton CO2/year just for food.
Wow, and it was really easy as well! If you think about the small effort for such a good result, then it was very easy.
How do you feel?
It feels great, now I´m really happy!
Andreas your total carbon emission "weight" for food, transport and living combined is now 10.7 ton CO2/year.
You decrease from 5.5 ton CO2/year to 0.7 ton CO2/year just for food.
That was more than I thought. 0.7 ton CO2/year, that´s extremely low.
How do you feel?
It feels great.
Lovely.
Linnea, you told us at the start that you didn´t feel so hopeful for the future.
But today we can see that your hopefulness has gone up by 15% and that your climate anxiety has gone down by 25%.
Why do you think that is?
I have seen that others also want to change and make a change. It´s easy to think that you are the only one and what you do doesn´t make a difference.
But it´s not only me who wants to make a change. Everyone I meet and have around me, they all want to change and make a difference.
Then it feels like, together we can actually make a big difference.
Yes, I believe that too.
Andreas, your hope for the future continue to be on top and your climate anxiety is completely gone. Why is that?
Well, I am a hopeful person, I believe. I´ve always been a hopeful person.
And since I started with BeChange I haven´t seen any indications that I shouldn´t be hopeful.
Rather the opposite. I mean, if I can do than everyone can do it.
Is there anything else that has affected your results?
Yes, I had my mental coaching with Ann.
She told me, since I´m on Facebook quite a lot in the evenings worrying when I see all the bad things that have happened.
Both bad news in general but especially bad news about the climate.
Then I have a hard time relaxing and going to sleep. Now I have cleared things like that from my feed so I don't see things that I know worries me.
Earlier you told us that you will start focusing more on the solutions rather than the problems. Have you done that?
Yes I have. When I start feeling worried in the evenings I start thinking about focusing more on my vision and goal.
And I think happy thoughts connected to my goal instead of feeling worried.
So I´ve changed focus from the problems to what I want to achieve with my life.
Why has it been so easy for you Andreas?
Everything I do, I try to make into something filled with joy. That's my default.
When I start with something I think: This is fun, it will be fun. And then I make it more fun.
Fun!
You thought it would be difficult to get the children to like vegetarian food. How has that turned out?
Today, Thea ate three portions of the Oumph Kebab. So that's great.
It´s also going great with Mika, the middle child, 3 years old.
But Nellie still doesn´t eat that much vegetarian food.
Some dishes work just fine. I think you have to make the same dish several times until the kids get used to them. Once they're used to them it's not a problem.
Clever!
What´s been hardest to change and how did you manage to overcome those difficulties?
When it comes to food I was afraid I would miss butter on my sandwich and milk in my coffee because I really like that.
But the alternatives are really tasty as well.
It feels like you get used to the alternatives and it doesn´t feel like a sacrifice.
At the start you told us that the hardest part would be to get your partner and children to eat vegetarian food. How has that turned out?
My one-year old eats pretty much what I give him so he´s been eating vegetarian food more than what he used to.
My partner doesn´t eat more vegetarian but he eats more vegan since I cook two vegan meals per week.
Has anyone else noticed a difference since you started with BeChange?
Hum, yes. I think that my partner thinks that the difference is that I´m a bit harder to deal with now when it comes to food.
I feel that I´m also more filled with joy now. It feels like I´m doing something now.
It doesn´t have to go super fast. I feel good taking small steps and making changes.
That feels better and that´s why I`m happier.
Now we are done with part 1, the food. What is the next step in the carbon dieting process?
Next step is how you live, your home.
And after that it´s transportation. First the home, then the transportation.
Congratulations Linnea and Andreas on your very successful carbon dieting!
Together with the rest of the participants in BeChange Linnea and Andreas have decreased their carbon emission "weight" for food by 50%!.
The hopefulness of the group has increased while their climate anxiety has decreased.
Together we can reach the Global Goals.
Personally, the participants have shown me that it´s easy and fun to be climate friendly.
We say good bye for now and we hope to see you again another time..
