WGG Review - The Deadly Tower of Monsters - Duration: 12:47.
is it possible to make a good game based
on genre of bad film and i really do
think it is
last year played a game called the
deadly tower of monsters I had
intentions of reviewing this last year and
never got to it because you know life
happens and I wasn't committed to doing
this last year as I am this year so
there you go anyway so the game is
called the deadly tower of monsters it
was made by Ace-Team i think that was the
development team and it was produced by
Atlus of all people which was you know
raise my eyebrows and this is an odd
sort of games let me give you the
rundown here the game itself it's as if
you're watching a b-movie now you're not
going to find anybody the loves b-movies more
than me
well you might but I've got a pretty
solid collection of b movies love
watching them a lot of finding them I'm
particularly fond of the final VHS tape
which is one of the things that killed
to this to be about this game but this
game is essentially if it's as if you're
watching a DVD release of some b-movie
right the movie happens to be the deadly
tower of monsters so you're watching the
DVD release
you're listening to the commentary from
the director Dan Smith
ok so you're listening to the commentary
but you're playing as the main character
dick
speedstar and along the way you actually
switch between two other characters some
alien space woman that I camera right
now and a robot character and you're all
working toward defeating the evil space
Emperor so the beautiful thing about
this game is that it is done in the
style of b-movie so there's there's a
ton of things that like tips there had
to this genre or the the cinema stylist
booty along the way you're running to
like stop motion enemies you'll run into
enemies that are are obviously people
and since you're going to run into
enemies that are at one point that
there's a there's a part where they're
explaining that the bad guys that he's
fighting are like puppies that were
wearing christmas lights and vacuum
cleaner parts and stuff like that you
can see the wires on the the flying
enemies and things like that all
actually requires a lot of things it's
ridiculous it is totally a love letter
to be movie and i love that so you fight
these ridiculous enemies that are
ridiculous just ridiculous
you're listening to this light metal
commentary on the game which basically
the directors commentary is thrown in
there to like explain why you're doing
stupid stuff like why in the world would
in a movie would you happen to break
boxes to find health items or ammunition
or things like that well the director
explained it well you know it's so he
could add them to keep the moment real
with it so it's kind of funny because
they explain things in a funny way to me
it was humorous to do is you start off
at the bottom of the tower you basically
work your way up to the very top for the
final showdown is it's funny it is in
the levels are intense to make it great
and
I really loved it you know that i love
this so much
you know that's what this became was
great the gameplay itself is actually
basically between six shooter with a lot
of the melee elements in there and
actually believe it or not at least for
me I ended up relying on daily attacks a
lot because it just seems faster
it was a lot more work to find like duck
and cover pots and things like that to
shoot it was just easier to go in and
just hit stuff you know there's some
other elements thrown in there as well
nice nice little touches like a default
you could dive from the top all the way
to the ground to kind of prevent
accidental following you can dive often
they later on again you get a teleport
where if you fall off you can tap the
button and tell put you back up to the
top you know you're back where you
started from which is cool because you
can do parts to do kind of like
challenges to do stuff you got to these
rings basically as i mentioned that
there's actually two other characters
the aliens lady who I believe is the
daughter of the Emperor is not mistaken
and in a robot that you run into along
the way you may find it useful to swap
between those characters but here's the
thing i forgot a lot because all the
characters essentially play identical it
was very rare for me to slop acceptable
absolutely essential to to get past the
puzzle of so from that standpoint I mean
the characters were great and they were
interesting to a degree but they never
made it an essential element to switch
from dick into one of the other
characters with the exception of a
handful of moments and I think that hurt
the game in some ways at least for me in
my opinion I think that it would have
been nice to you have to switch up more
often it was disappointing
I mean it was difficult so like let's
talk about how it looks the game looks
like you expected to look already
mentioned that it's not like a
mind-blowing super photorealistic
you know it's not one thing it's not
meant to be that right because it's like
I said it's a love letter to be movie so
it's going to look kind of hokey the
graphics themselves are you know
whatever it isn't particularly great
isn't particularly terrible either it's
just kinda is what it is but what I did
like was they had a filter mode on here
where you can choose between the DVD
mode or the VHS mode now the VHS mode
have a lot more like grain and
artifacting and a little crackling
sizzle in the audio and that's the thing
is like you gotta remind yourself that
you're watching the movie and they're
giving you the commentary right so some
of that's expected right like if you put
yourself back you would have been
watching a poor print of the movie more
than likely and so it adds a layer to
that i'm watching a movie and I liked it
I liked that element a lot now whenever
I compared the two I mean the DVD may
look Chris and it looks fine but it
didn't fit with what the moving was
trying to see what the game was trying
to accomplish and I I didn't like tubidy
most closely the VHS mobiles what was up
and I guess there's a reason they
recommend that audio is fantastic lot of
ridiculous one-liners and a lot of
ridiculous dialogue in there that is
very in tune with what you would say
with a b-movie of the fifties sixties
error it it really is it is good and
even the voice acting at the parts of
the counter is it's not bad voice-acting
but it's good voice acting that is meant
to sound that sound hokey sounds over
delivered which is exactly how detector
in one of these movies that was trying
to take himself serious but he's in a
crappy movie you know exactly how to do
you know and it was i loved it i love
that it is exactly what i want and so
yeah that sums up to that because over
delivering a blind and passed very very
indicative of the movies very very
indignant control was in March with a
control it works the way you want to
work you point you shoot it it's like I
said it's a twin-stick shooter the
controls work because they work and
there's really not a lot to say about
that everything works the way you want
to
it's really intuitive you don't have to
spend a lot of time thinking about what
you're going to do and relearning a
button configuration everything's pretty
much right where you would expect things
to be at least I mean the other night I
pick this back up just to capture some
gameplay of the final boss fight and I
can have to relearn the controls you
know what I do when I have to come back
to touch these games sometimes i just
picked it up and it was good to go
so from that standpoint the controls are
fabulous and it's exactly what you want
if you happen to have the pc version if
you happen to get the computer version
of the playstation 4 version definitely
make sure you've got a controller you
can do it with a keyboard and mouse but
it is designed to work with a controller
i actually use an xbox 360 controller
was perfectly just make sure you have
one hand you you not a good
the only other thing that i wanted to
mention was that at the very end of the
game i say on the end to be kind of and
I don't over ruin it
just in case you decide to play it but
there's all this build-up and then the
end
I mean yes if you will you know from the
get-go that but you're watching a DVD
release of the movie but the ending it
lacks something and I really feel like
something more could have gone on there
and then and then whatever what your
three that it's just a louver n roll the
credits so it's kind of I don't know I
would've liked to have just a little bit
more to it and I would have liked to
develop that in a little bit more but i
don't think i can complain too much
because let's be honest it's been a
b-movie from the from the beginning
why not make it a b-movie ish at the end
that you've ever watched to be moving a
lot of times it's just kind of like
there are brought in the Joker I just
can't complain too much and I don't want
to over complain but i did want to
mention that i was disappointed with
that I wanted things all in all it's
well worth claim and if memory serves me
correctly is pretty cheap
it's fast it's really short it's really
ideal for you guys out there like me to
pick up a game and play it and play
through it pretty quickly and come back
to it often and not feel like he's
totally forgot everything I can't back
up after like a year and I was fine i
can play as I think from that standpoint
it works really well for those of us
that don't have a lot of time to devote
to our daily it's really for me it's
super silly if you like b-side be hard
you like movies like that if you are a
fan of those types of movies you love
this game because it just it's just it's
like a big wet sloppy it's great i was
full heartedly recommend anybody getting
this game i love it really did it's
probably one of the it was some of the
most fun I've had playing a game in
awhile
