Welcome to another tutorial.
My name is Pedro Soares and today I'm gonna show you
how we can create a winter scene.
This is the image I'm going to use to explain this technique,
and for those you saw my tutorial, How to Create Good Looking Snow
may remember this image and that I mention

I will reveal how I get this winter scene,
from a fall picture.
This technique uses the image Channels,
since I believe it's the one where we get more control.
Nevertheless there are other options to achieve a similar result.
To begin select the layer you are gonna work with,
and then go to the Channels panel.
Most of the time we just need the Red and Green channels.
This is the case for this image.
Rarely we'll need the Blue channel,
and sometimes we just need to use the Green channel.

Select the Red channel,
Choose the option Load to Pixel Selection,
and activate again all the channels,
Go back to the layers panel,
choose Add Pixel Layer and invert the selection,
go to Select > Invert Pixel Selection.

Now go to Edit > Fill,
and choose black, in this case my Secondary Colour,
and click Apply.
Then go to Select > Deselect.
Add a new pixel layer on top of the Background layer,
and go to Edit > Fill,
choose white, in my case the Primary Colour,
and click Apply.
Next select this two layers,
and go to Layer and select Merge Selected.
Change the name of this layer to Red Channel,
and go to Layer and choose Duplicate.
To this layer we're gonna add a Live Filter.
Go to Layer > New Live Filter,
and choose Diffuse Glow Filter.
The values I'm using may vary,
and they depend on the size of the image/document.
For this image, I'm happy with this values.
Let's also rename this layer,
to Red Glow.
Next change the Blend Mode to Screen,
and set the opacity to 70%.
The next step is to repeat all this process to the Green channel.
Start by unchecking this two layers,
select the Background layer,
and go to the Channels panel.
Select the Green channel,
choose the option Load to Pixel Selection,
and reactivate all the channels.
Go back to Layers,
and then go to Select and choose Invert Pixel Selection.
Next add a new layer,
choose Edit > Fill,
and use black that in my case is my Secondary Colour,
click Apply.
Go to Select and choose Deselect.
Now create a new layer just after the Background layer,
and go to Edit > Fill,
and this time use white, in my case, my Primary Colour,
click Apply.
Now select this two layers,
and go to Layer and choose Merge Selected.
Let's also change the name of this layer,
this time to Green Channel.
Next go to Layer and choose Duplicate.
Change the name of this layer to Green Glow,
and add a Live Filter.
Go to Layer > New Live Filter Layer and choose Diffuse Glow.
Don't forget that the values I'm using may be different for your image.

For my image I'm gonna use this values.
Now select the Green Glow layer,
and change the Blend Mode to Screen,
and the opacity to 70%.
Next select the two layers that refers to the green channel,
and place them on top of the Red Glow layer.
Now we can activate the two red channel layers.
To control the relationship between the Green Glow and Red Glow,
we gonna use the Green Channel layer.
The opacity of this layer is set to 100%,
which means all that's underneath is hidden.
So we need to lower the opacity, is this case I set it to 10%.
This is the value I normaly use
to achieve the best result between the two layers.
If we choose to make a black and white image of this picture,
we had the final image ready, but this is not the case.
So we need to add some colour of the original image.
To do that select the Background layer,
go to Layer and select Duplicate.
and place it on top of all the layers we create before.
Next change the Blend Mode to Soft Light,
and set the opacity to a value
and set the opacity to a value
that gives you the result you want.
For this image around 30%.
And we now have our winter scene created.
If we needed to add more impact to the effect,
we could always change the opacity of the Glow layers.
We could select the Green Glow layer
and try an opacity of 90%.
We can also do the same in the Red Glow Layer.
Just change the opacity to 90%.
Before I finish I want to give you a tip related to the possibility
of using more than one technique/adjustment
to achieve the best possible result.
I'm gonna use this image to show you that extra step,
where I previously made the same process of creating a winter scene,
as you can see from the layers in the Layers Panel.
The idea I'm looking for is to add more snow to the trees,
and change the tonality of the image in order to have a colder look.
First select the Background layer,
go to Select and choose Colour Range > Select Greens.

go to Select and choose Colour Range > Select Greens.
Then add a new pixel layer,
go to Edit > Fill,
and choose white, in my case my Primary Colour.
Next place this layer on top of all the other layers
and in the Select Menu choose Deselect.
Now we need to add a Live Filter,
go to Layer > New Live Filter > Gaussian Blur.
go to Layer > New Live Filter > Gaussian Blur.
For this image I'm gonna use 0.1px just to add a small blur.
And we can see before and after applying this adjustment.
The final step is to add a Lens Filter.
Go to Layer and choose New Adjustment Layer > Lens Filter.
Go to Layer and choose New Adjustment Layer > Lens Filter.
Go to Layer and choose New Adjustment Layer > Lens Filter.
Since my goal it to give a colder look to the image,
I'm gonna choose blue for the filter colour.
Now change the Optical Density until you get the desired result.
For this image I think around 40% works fine.
And we have now a second image create with the same process,
but this time with two extra adjustments,
in order to get a better result.
