PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — There is "no progress" being made in talks between Neil Walker's representatives and the Mets on a possible extension, but sources on both sides said Tuesday morning that it's "definitely not dead."
The sides have been discussing a deal that would include the 2017 season and extend for two more. Walker was looking for something just "north of $40 million," and the Mets were looking to stay in that area, a source said, adding that the hang-up is not about the money.
Walker agreed to a $17.2 million qualifying offer for this season after one year with the Mets. The second baseman came to the Mets in a Dec. 2015 trade with the Pirates, which sent lefty Jon Niese to Pittsburgh.
Walker, a Pittsburgh native, hit .282 tying a career-high with 23 home runs last year with the Mets.
He played just 113 games last season because he needed surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back in September.
A Mets source said they have "no concerns" that Walker's back was healthy going forward and that was not the hang up in the negotiations.
It is not the first time talks between Walker's agent and the Mets have taken a hiatus. They discussed a similar deal before Walker accepted the qualifying offer in November.
Walker has been open about his desire to stay with the Mets since last season.
WRIGHT WARMING UP?
David Wright played catch again on Tuesday, just the second time he has thrown a baseball since his June neck surgery. While Wright said he felt good and Terry Collins said that the third baseman actually felt better this time, it's not likely that anyone outside the team will see him throw for a while.
Wright again played catch out of sight of the media and a large contingent of Mets fans at Tradition Field on Tuesday. Collins said that is to avoid any over-reaction as he gets going.
"We just don't want to overexpose him, where something like he makes a bad throw and all the sudden it's a big story," the Mets manager said. "We want to make sure when he start out there throwing in front of everybody that he's ready to let loose."

That doesn't mean that fans won't get a chance to see Wright this spring.
He will be the designated hitter in a lot of home Grapefruit League games until he is ready to play the field, Collins said. The Mets have to be patient with their third baseman.
"Three weeks from today, we'll have a real good idea where he's at. He's not going to play a lot of third base, but he's going to get a ton of ground balls, as much as we can get him, but he probably won't play live until we're sure his arm's right," Collins said. "So he's going to DH and get at-bats in minor league games."
Throwing is the final step in Wright's return from surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck last June. It is the second spring he is overcoming a major issue related to his spine. Over the past two years, Wright has played in just 75 regular season games.
He hit a career-low .226 with a surprising 55 strikeouts in 137 at-bats last season.
COLLINS QUIP OF THE DAY
After losing all but one of his Opening Day infielders to back or spine injuries last season, at least Collins has a sense of humor about it. Explaining that he will leave behind most of his veteran starters for the Grapefruit League opener in Ft. Myers to spare the older guys the two-and-a-half hour bus ride, who could resist a joke about 2016?
"We've had enough back surgeries around here," Collins cracked.

Rain is expected in southeast Florida on Thursday, so the Mets have scrapped the intra-squad scrimmage they normally have the day before the Grapefruit League games begin. The Mets will also try to get in extra work on Wednesday anticipating a washout Thursday.
"So we've kind of backed off the intrasquad," Collins said. "We're going to try and get somethings done tomorrow because Thursday the outlook isn't very good."
