[IT/EN-sub] Trentino, Alto Adige, Südtirol ~ is it all one region? - Duration: 19:30.

Goodmorning and welcome back to my channel

I'm Lexi and today I wanna do something we frequently do

answering some comments I got

about my region, Trentino

so anyone who's not interested may go and we'll see each other next week

for all the others let's move forward

and answer the comments. Just a sec, I need to get them back...

why don't you make a video where you explain the difference between Trentino and South Tyrol?

well, I'd say it's a matter of geography

if you get a map

and pay attention, you might notice

that the region is split into 2 provinces

on one is written "Province of Bozen"

and that's South Tyrol, on the other

is written "Province of Trient" and that's called Trentino.

so the first difference is geography.

Now, before anyone gets the idea to lynch me

"I wasn't here for this, I knew it already!"

let's move forwards and deep into the differences

first thing I want to clear out is: in Trentino we don't speak German.

we study it in school, we have to...

for historical reasons, which I believe are right

meaning we spoke German for centuries

it's something it allows us to better understand our history

the fact that... oh, wait, coffee's ready...

I'm back with my coffee, now we can

just pause the video, you know I tend to talk a lot...

So, the first actual difference is language

meaning that in South Tyrol German is an official language

whilst in Trentino it's enough for us to study it in schools.

Both in Trentino and Alto Adige are present some linguistic minorities

called cimbro, mocheno and ladino.

Ladino is a dialect derived from...

as the name says, Latin,

so it's most similar to Italian

whilst Mocheno and Cimbro most resemble German.

One thing I really enjoy

is we have some local TVs

airing news in Mocheno

these peculiar languages

I love to listen to them and find them very interesting because...

as I said, I think dutch is something in between English

and German, taking some words from each of them

the same is for this dialect that takes some worldldld

some world... I can't say this!

Some word from the Trentino dialect,

some word from German, puts them all together

but, if you listen carefully

you might be able to get the meaning of what they say...

knowing both German and Italian

is interesting to hear to this funny and peculiar dialect.

As I was saying: one major difference is South Tyrol

has 2 official languages: Italian and German.

Speaking about this someone asked me:

Are classes in school taken in German?

Yes and no. Meaning there are Italian schools

where people speak and learn in Italian

and school where everything is taught in German

which are German schools!

You can freely choose which one you'd like to attend

but the choice has consequences we're gonna talk about later

Before that, I'd like to take a historical detour

in the rest of Italy the Province

of Bozen is questioned

or, better, German speakers in the region

for the fact they speak German

they say: "you're Italians, on your passport is written Italians"

"comply and speak Italian."

I feel at this point an historical clarification is needed

they didn't ask to be italians and actually

one thing you don't read in history books, though our grandparents

even in Trento, like to remind us is that

the Trentino region was annexed to Italy without a referendum.

Why is this important? What could have happened?

With a referendum there was the actual chance

that many people from Trento

decided not to join Italy, because...

yes, there were problems, for example we didn't use to have Italian speaking schools

or, better, universities, so we didn't have higher education in Italian

so Italians weren't all that happy about this

but as for laws and other legal matters

it wasn't that bad.

Another thing I should probably point out is that Trentino... imagine a mountain environment

people used to live on mountains, countryside, not educated townspeople

they were rough

villagers, paesants...

so they weren't likely to discuss politics

for them, so long as things worked somehow, it was enough.

So it wasn't so sure that Trento would have decided to join Italy.

Many didn't like this.

Above all German speakers

imagine how they might have felt when someone came to them

and said: all right, now you're italians

and you'll have to speak Italian.

because... I have to clarify something here.

at the beginning, when the region became part of Italy, it wasn't that traumatic

but then, with facism

South Tyrol was italianised by force

and... people from Trento and Bozen who are following my channel please correct me...

but I think it was done in an ingnorant way.

I mean, all the names... imagine, all the villages

the valleys, anything on our territory

that used to have German names

was substituted by an Italian name.

Sometimes with something that sounded alike

like Meran that became Merano

geez! I picked the hardest one for me, not being able to pronounce the R

typical me! Bozen became Bolzano...

but you don't see much thought, sometimes you wonder:

"where does this come from? Just how..."

"does this come from that?!"

and, imagine, even those who lived here

all used to their German and having German names

first of all being forced to speak Italian

because it wasn't something felt, something they needed

something they wanted. None of them asked to become part of Italy

so being forced to be Italians

with all of their culture stripped away, all the names changed

over night

without a cultural and historical study underneath.

Honestly, if anyone got to me and said: "look this street you've always called..."

even in Trento. For example...

What we nowadays call Piazza Cesare Battisti

my granny called it Piazza Italia,

because during fascism it was renamed to Piazza Italia

afterwards, and I really enjoyed this, they chose to rename it

as Piazza Cesare Battisti, because... well, some day we'll talk about Cesare Battisti

but I liked how they countered an "irredentista"

so someone interested in italian culture, who wanted to bring Trento to Italy

but wasn't so typical and so

fascist sounding as a "Piazza Italia".

after the fall of fascism let's say they tried to moderate things and switch back

to German names. A little too much, nowadays there's the opposite problem

sometimes there's only the German name

and Italians rightfully complained.

I think this is a little hard to some people

some Italians from outside the region find it hard to accept

there's a place in Italy where

they spoke a foreign language.

But as I said in another video it feels outragious

to some Italians to get there and hear all these people

speaking a language they don't in their own country

they can't communicate, they find it hard, so they say

"geez! We're in Italy, learn the language once and for all!"

On the other side I get what Germans speakers feel

and I don't find it this hard to get along

when you speak German they brighten up

I think this is part of the "let's try to meet in the middle"

they know they can't speak Italian,

it's hard, but they try

same thing, when they see someone who tries to communicate in their language even if they can't

they're glad to help.

Now I know my troll friend will pop up

to say something about this, or, better

to prove the opposite.

Oh, well. There's place for us both. Just know I had a positive experience

with german speakers in South Tyrol.

At this point I'll let down my cup, or I'm going to spill my coffee all over the sofa.

asking me: what do you in Trentino think of those in South Tyrol?

Do you feel one region or you are Italians and those are Germans?

feeling unite is a little hard, because we're 2 Indipendent Provinces

and we like to underline our indipendency

so, it's: "Indipendent Province of Trento" and "Indipendent Province of Bozen"

I think the affiliation to province is more felt than the Region as a whole.

I think people in Trento feel from Trento and those in Bozen

feel from Bozen and they don't have nothing to share with us.

As usual: people from Trento and Bozen either confirm or deny!

However I think this people from Trento vs people from Bozen is oversimplified

and a little... well I'm not saying political propaganda, but... I'm sorry!

I'm finishing my s-coffee before it gets s-cold

and this is a matter that

derives from some older hate

that has historical reasons, meaning that once Austriaa

so the Austro-hungarian empire, was the enemy

against wich Italy united

so there was Italy uniting and developing against an enemy

the Austro-Hungarian Empire

two forces fighting each other.

Then, when this Austria against Italy conflict ended

remained some hatred hidden in this Italians versus Germans

G-R-emans... yeah...

Germans, not Austrians as it used to be

this word Germans is a melting pot mixing Austrians,

some generic Germans...

anyone who speaks Germans and we don't know anymore what we're against

who's the enemy?

What's German?

Are we mad at people from South Tyrol who can't speak Italian?

Are we against Germans in Germany, just because WE don't speak German?

Who's the enemy? Why are we fighting?!

I think this is nowadays a plaything for populists

something to help political propaganda

that creates two groups: it's us against them!

And anything that can fuel this hatred goes on the newspapers with huge titles

Christian quoted me some article where the Mayor of Bozen greeted

the President of... I don't remember

someone from EU, and they spoke German

this guy was actually German

so it makes sense they organise something where German is spoken

Italians can complain because they're Italians

you have to have a translation because there are 2 official languages

but if German is your native language

so as theirs... my, my! Let's speak German!

or should we speak English in order to be politically correct? Where's the common sense?

I don't see this as highly outragious

or something to fight over

jut because it wasn't spoken Italian

they had to apologise, as it should be

but I believe these things are strumentalised

just to fuel this mutual hatred

against an enemy that...

Dunno. I guess we have to feel this "us against them" somehow

in order to be united and that politicians know it

so they use any news they can turn around

honestly I never found myself in the middle of these wars

even in the Province of Bozen

even in those villages where no one speaks Italian

I always managed to communicate

somehow.

Obviously is hard: if they don't speak Italian and I don't speak German is hard!

but I insist that integration is this

trying to find a middle ground, understand oneselves and the reasons

behind all of these facts

and that the only way to move forward, to grow as a culture

is understand that there are different mentalities

different cultures

and find something positive, what they have to give

and understand that it can make you yourself and your culture grow.

Another thing I want to clarify is that in South Tyrol

if we look at the statistics it turns out that they're all german speakers

but they did a research some time ago, if I find it back I'm gonna post the

links in the description, where it

turned out that in mixed language groups

it happens more frequently that German native speakers speak Italian than

for Italian speakers to speak German

in these mixed groups

so when they tell me: they only speak German, don't want to mix with us

I don't see it.

a German in an Italian group, speaking Italian

and not the opposite... from this research it would appear

that the situation is a little different than what is portrayed by newspapers.

Are they really all Germans in South Tyrol?

Some time ago someone asked me a question about German and the diffusion of the language on the territory

so I found a map divided into zones

where Italian and Germans are spoken

and is specified where German and Italian are more spoken...

with the different percentages (I couldn't find the word)

so where one is more widespread.

What came out of these surveys

was that in South Tyrol the vast majority is a German native speaker

I think we should make a distinction

meaning that the Province of Bozen has a peculiarity

it's officially bilingual

and anyone who wants to work in a public place like a school,

public administration... anything, has to

know both German and Italian

you have to get this licence that proves you're bilingual

it certifies that you, person X, can speak both Italian and German

How do you do it? You present them with your titles, like:

I attended an Italian school

and then you'll have to pass a German exam.

If you say you attended a German school you'll have to pass an Italian test

and then certify you know bith German and Italian

because they assume that if you attended school X

you know language X that school is thaught in.

Now, to declare you're part of either linguistic group

there are some rules I don't remember

one parent should be native speaker of that language

and you must have attended... I don't remember

I don't have this licence

it's not something I'm into at these levels of knowledge

as always, anyone who knows more feel free to add infos in the comments.

Anyways, you decide if you're German or Italian speaker

and according to what you declared, you'll either have to take a test in German or Italian

obviously, if someone is Italian it's easier for them to take an Italian test.

if you're German, it'll be easier to take a German test

because it's the language you know best

so I think we should take this into account, so

how many say they're Italians to take the test in German

and how many say they're Germans to take the Italian test

the language they know best, their actual native language

so I don't know how trustworthy these statistics are

so long as this is at stake.

Speaking about how we see each other, I'd say

as kind of cousins

as I said in other videos

in Italy, not just here

everyone seems to feel more the affiliation to the region than to Italy

and it's just natural that us, as anyone

feel a stronger connection to our region

before feeling... I just got a splendid idea for another

video, wait and you'll see...

than feeling part of either one or the other culture.

so, again, I think we feel more as cousins

and there isn't a real fight, all this clash of civilisations

that newspapers like to talk about

is felt by those in the political field

who use these matters

there are some people in Trentino, as I said under some other video,

who want to unite Tyrol back again

as some in South Tyrol want to

but I see this as somehow anacronistic decisions

we're all europeans

these nationalisms

this wanting to shut ourselves in our little world

have no reason to be anymore.

Again: I think the only way to move forward

is to expand, open up to what's Other and different

even though Americans seem to disagree.

Trump's strange relationship: What last week revealed about the President, Putin and Russia - Duration: 8:53.

Retired Gen. Michael Flynn resigned as President Trump's national security adviser last week, after reports confirmed that he had spoken to the Russian ambassador about lifting American sanctions and then lied about doing so. Flynn likely won't be charged with any crime, but honestly, who wants a top security official who doesn't realize that his communications with Russians would be closely monitored?

On Dec. 29, just hours after Obama had announced strong sanctions against Russia in retaliation for hacking related to the election, the FBI recorded Flynn's conversation with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Flynn was likely attempting to reassure the Kremlin that everything would be fine once Trump took office a few weeks later.

Tellingly, Russian President Vladimir Putin seems to have accepted the proposal, as he announced the very next day that Russia would not answer Obama in kind by expelling American diplomats from Russia. The game continued a few hours later, when Trump tweeted about how smart Putin was for not retaliating.

It was the first time in my memory that Putin has backed down like that, so for some reason he judged it in his best interests.

But when the Washington Post found out about the calls and raised this quid pro quo possibility a few weeks later, the Trump transition team quickly denied that Flynn had talked to any Russians about lifting sanctions, and then repeated this denial after the inauguration. Remarkably, even when leaks confirmed Flynn had, in fact, discussed sanctions and lied to Vice-President Mike Pence about it, Trump denied having heard any of these reports himself.

Oddly, Trump did not seem angry with Flynn over the snafu, as you might expect if one of your top appointees went rogue by having secret conversations with a hostile foreign power. We may never know if Trump told Flynn to reassure Russia about the sanctions, or if he later told Flynn to lie about it. The truth will only come out if and when Flynn is obliged to testify under oath.

But it does seem clear that Putin, at least, believed Flynn had the authority to speak for the incoming President, and acted accordingly.

Trump's reaction to Flynn's resignation made it sound like it had been demanded by someone else. Trump blamed his own intelligence apparatus for leaking the content of Flynn's Russia contacts and blamed the media for revealing it. Turning to Twitter, his own personal Pravda, Trump defended Flynn as a "good man" who was being treated unfairly.

But then why did he ask Flynn to resign? If the leaked information was accurate, as Trump must have known it to be, how could it also be "fake news"?

Such obvious contradictions aren't a problem for Trump, of course. They are his oxygen, his lifeblood. Much like the Red Queen in Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking-Glass," Trump says as many as six impossible things before breakfast.

It's for others to try to reconcile them, to figure out if they represent new American policy, a complete fantasy or just whatever he saw on TV the night before.

The White House is hoping that the stories about the administration's inappropriate contacts with Russia will end with Flynn's exit, but this is unlikely. Like a matryoshka nesting doll, every revelation leads to another, and another, with Putin always at the center.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is on friendly terms with Putin and was even awarded a friendship medal by the Russian dictator in 2012. Trump's Commerce nominee Wilbur Ross has banking ties with Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg in Cyprus, one of the main hubs for laundering money siphoned out of Russia.

Considering the wealthy stature of most of Trump's cabinet appointees, it's not a surprise that several of them would have conflicts of interest. It does seem like quite a coincidence, however, that so many of these conflicts have to do with Putin's Russia. It would almost be reassuring to hear about a scandal involving one of Trump's nominees and, say, Saudi Arabia or Venezuela.

Instead, it's Russian hacking, Russian phone calls and Russian banking.

During the campaign, it was worrying when several of Donald Trump's top advisers turned out to have extensive Russian political and business connections. Paul Manafort, Trump's campaign director for a time, for years worked for Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, Putin's puppet ruler there until he was literally chased out of town in 2014 and into exile in Russia.

Before joining Trump's team, Flynn appeared on Putin's propaganda network Russia Today and was even seated next to Putin at a Moscow party celebrating the channel.

Even more troubling, the candidate's own rhetoric about Putin was inexplicably flattering. Why on Earth would an American presidential candidate, a Republican one no less, repeatedly express his admiration for a KGB dictator whose track record includes destroying Russian democracy, killing journalists and dissidents, and carpet-bombing civilians in Chechnya and Aleppo? Trump admires strength, and could not care less about democracy in Russia or anywhere else, but this was well beyond that.

When the election got underway, I expected Hillary Clinton to be a Russia hawk in order to blunt criticism of the failed "Russian reset" policy she helped orchestrate when she was President Obama's secretary of state. Any normal Republican candidate would be expected to also condemn Putin's invasion of Ukraine and annexation of Crimea, as well as the genocide he was perpetrating with his friend Bashar Assad in Syria.

Instead, we got Trump, and Trump never backed down from his shocking praise of Putin. This admiration was apparently mutual, at least judging by the contents of the Russian media, which is always a reflection of Putin. The Kremlin-controlled media has been as enthusiastic about Trump as it was hateful toward Hillary Clinton.

But that has started to change over the past few days. The new narrative is that Trump might be losing control and allowing "traitorous elements" inside the intelligence services to undermine him.

Unsurprisingly, this is quite similar to the line of attack selected by Trump himself. I noted last year that many of the Trump campaign's talking points were nearly copy-pasted from Russian anti-American propaganda, a trend that has continued into his presidency. As for Trump himself, he keeps denying, with carefully chosen words, that he has any investments in Russia.

That may be the case, and we should see his taxes in order to confirm it, but at this point I'm more worried about what investments Russia may have in him.

If Flynn, Tillerson and others were on Putin's wish list, seeing the general forced to resign might have come as a blow to the Kremlin.

But all is not lost, it seems. When Trump asked retired Vice Admiral Robert Harward to replace Flynn, Harward declined, saying that he wanted to be able to choose his own people. Trump had apparently insisted that Flynn deputy K.T.

McFarland stay on, even though this stipulation resulted in the well-respected Harward declining the post.

One of McFarland's claims to fame in recent years was her declaration in 2013 that Vladimir Putin should receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Coincidence? Perhaps. A series of coincidences that all revolve around Putin? Well, I believe in coincidences, but I also believe in the KGB.

So what, you might reply. What is the problem if a new President wants to cozy up with Russia instead of traditional allies like Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom? And doesn't it make sense for a pro-Putin American President to hire pro-Putin people?

For the sake of argument, let's say that Trump isn't compromised in some way, and that he is sincere in wanting to have good relations with Russia.

This leads to another problem, however, in that there is no domestic or geopolitical reason for the United States to ally with Putin's gangster state, and many reasons why it's a terrible idea.

On Thursday, I was in Washington, D.C., to speak before a Senate subcommittee hearing on U.S. leadership, or lack thereof, in global democracy and human rights. Sen. Marco Rubio invited me and dissidents from Saudi Arabia and Cuba to speak about the role the United States could play in promoting liberty abroad, and, more importantly, why it should.

The world has become less free and less safe over the past decade as America has retreated. The power vacuum left by Obama's retrenchment — fully supported by the American people — has been occupied by Iran, by Russia, by China, and other nations with little interest in human rights or democracy beyond how to crush them.

This sea change in the global balance of power hasn't made America any stronger, any richer, or any safer. Instead, it has undermined the perception of the United States as a force for good in the world while making it less safe.

As I said in my testimony at the hearing, there is no weapon or wall that is more powerful for American security than America being envied, imitated and admired around the world, as it was when I looked at it from afar from the Soviet Union. Admired not for being perfect, but for having the exceptional courage to always try to be better.

This projection of American values is impossible if you are allied with the likes of Putin, who cares only for power. There is no common ground, no common interests, with Putin's Russia. Fighting Islamist terror is the usual refrain, but it is as much a fantasy now as it was when it was tried by George W.

Bush and then by Barack Obama.

Russia is a terror sponsor, not a terror fighter, and making any security deal with a country that is currently invading Europe is preposterous. If Trump really wants to protect American interests, he will instead throw all possible support behind Putin's victims, like arming Ukraine and bolstering NATO for Putin's inevitable next aggression.

That next step may come in the Balkans, in the Middle East, or closer to Russia, but it will come. Putin needs constant conflict to justify his hold on total power in Russia, and if he can't boast of a grand bargain with the new American President, he will need something else to distract the Russian people from their disintegrating homeland.

When Putin makes his move, what will Trump's response be? Will he stand with American allies and American principles, or will he continue to display more loyalty to the hostile dictator who just hacked the American presidential election? My worst fear is that there are no policies or principles in this White House at all, and that Trump himself has no idea what he will do.

And so we will all have to wait for the next tweet, and the next leak, and that is no way to run a country.

Cops kill attempted robber armed with fake gun outside Brooklyn deli - Duration: 1:36.

Cops fatally shot a man who brandished a fake gun during a robbery at a Brooklyn deli early Sunday, authorities said.

The suspect pointed the realistic weapon directly at a Garden Deli &amp; Grill clerk behind the counter during the robbery at Irving Ave. and Starr St. in Bushwick just before 1 a.m., according to surveillance footage.

An employee called 911 at 12:40 p.m. and three cops with the NYPD's anti-crime squad spotted the suspect walking west on Starr St., along Maria Hernandez Park.

The officers opened fire and struck the suspect several times when he raised what appeared to be a firearm.

Police recovered this realistic pellet gun at the scene of a police-involved shooting in Bushwick.

Paramedics rushed the man to Woodhull Hospital, where he died. He was not immediately identified.

Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan said the recovered weapon was a "realistic-looking imitation pistol."

"A pellet gun," Monahan noted.

The suspect who was fatally shot early Sunday in Bushwick is seen in surveillance footage pointing the fake gun at a deli clerk.

A witness watching television across the street from deli heard at least seven to 10 shots fired outside the park.

Tyler Elliott said he looked outside his window and saw police shouting into the deli that had just been robbed.

This is the NYPD's second police shooting in Brooklyn this week.

On Thursday, a trio of plainclothes cops exchanged fire with a revolver-toting 17-year-old near the Cypress Hills Houses in East New York. The boy was killed and later identified as Kadeem Torres.

Steve Wilkos helps bust perv, failed TV lie detector test launches police investigation - Duration: 2:14.

A horrific child molester is serving 10 years behind bars thanks to former cop turned talk show host, Steve Wilkos.

Pervert Dameion McBride, 23, of Kansas City, was convicted late last year of molesting three of his cousin's five children—a 3-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl — in January and February of 2015, according to court papers.

The mother of the children confronted McBride with the allegations on "The Steve Wilkos Show" in May 2015.

On the show, McBride took and failed a lie detector test when asked if the allegations against him were true.

The mother reported the failed test and the television show appearance to authorities. Investigators questioned McBride, who said he had gone on "The Steve Wilkos Show" to clear his name but failed the lie detector test.

He initially denied having touched any of the alleged victims.

The children's parents, Nakeisha and Samm will return to the show on Thursday with an update on the case — that McBride will spend the next decade in the clink.

Wilkos says that even though he's no longer a police officer, helping to bring the bad guys to justice — especially for a crimes as heinous as the ones committed by McBride —never gets old.

"On a personal level it makes me feel good," Wilkos says. "People come up to me to say they really like what I'm doing, that I make a difference and that makes me feel really good."

CNN brass believe they can turn their website and other digital properties into a billion-dollar business in the next five years — but they admit they don't know how.

"We're still figuring it out," CNN chief Jeff Zucker says.

"But I would argue that outside of the Silicon Valley companies there's no legacy media company that is doing anywhere near as close to how well we're doing."

And while the company has been weathering ferocious outbursts from President Trump and members of his administration, Zucker says morale among network staffers is high.

"They wear those insults as a badge of honor because it means they're doing their jobs," he says.

"I would say that morale is incredibly high, because they're incredibly proud of the job we're doing, they're not intimidated, they're not backing down and they know that they have my full support."

Homeland Security expands powers of immigration officers, law enforcement to deport undocumented... - Duration: 1:36.

Federal agents and local law enforcement will have more power to aggressively pursue, arrest and deport undocumented immigrants, according to new guidelines signed by the head of Homeland Security on Friday.

DHS Secretary John Kelly has laid out a series of sweeping changes to go part in parcel with President Trump's travel ban.

In the two memos up for review by the White House Counsel, Kelly proposes hiring 10,000 more Immigration and Custom Enforcement officers as well as 5,000 more Customs and Border Patrol agents.

Kelly also wants ICE officials to be able to detain anyone they suspect is violating immigration law.

Additionally, any department resources previously set aside to help illegal immigrants will go to a new office to assist victims of crimes committed by "removable aliens."

The secretary would like to see the end of "catch and release" programs at the U.S. border and see all illegal aliens detained and immediately deported, according to one of the memos.

Kelly wants to expand the pool of immigrants prioritized for deportation — from immigrants that have been in the U.S. for less than two weeks to include those in the country for up to two years, speed up deportation hearings and enlist local law enforcement to help.

The amount of American money being sent to Mexico would also be under scrutiny. "The President has directed the heads of all executive departments to identify and quantify all sources of direct and indirect Federal aid or assistance to the Government of Mexico," one of the memos states.
