Improve Your Vocabulary: KNOW, MEET, MEET WITH, or MEET UP? - Duration: 10:43.

Hello.

My name is Emma, and in today's video I am going to teach you about the difference between

"know" and "meet".

This is a very common mistake I hear many, many students making.

Okay.

I'm also going to teach you about the difference between

"meet", "meet with", or "meet up with".

Okay?

And this, in case you're wondering, is the past tense of "meet".

Okay? So in this video we're going to talk about:

"know", "meet", "meet up with", and "meet with",

and: What are the differences between those different words?

So let's get started.

So I have here four sentences.

"I knew Chelsea last week."

And "knew" is the past of "know".

"I met Chelsea last week."

"Met" is the past of "meet".

"I met with Chelsea last week."

and: "I met up with Chelsea last week."

Do you know what the difference between these sentences are?

Are there any ones that have a mistake in them or all these all good sentences?

Okay, so take a moment and think about it.

Okay.

So, let's first look at the difference between these two:

"I knew Chelsea last week." and "I met Chelsea last week."

So I have here some pictures.

Pictures can really help you remember things, and they can really, you know, help make a point...

A stronger point.

So, let's get started over here.

We have "meet", which is now and the past, which is "met".

I have here two people.

These people do not know each other.

It's the first time that they are talking.

Okay? They don't know each other.

So what do they say?

They say: "Nice to meet you!"

We use "meet" when we're meeting somebody for the first time.

We use "meet" with strangers.

Okay?

So these guys, they don't know each other and now they are meeting for the first time.

Okay, so these two, we could say: "They met last week."

Meaning: The first time they shook hands:

"Hi. Nice to meet you." was last week.

Now, compare this to "know" or "knew", which again, is the past tense.

We have here two friends.

Okay?

We can call them David and Ken.

They're friends forever.

Okay? They've been friends for a very long time.

In this case they know each other.

They have history.

It's not they're meeting for the first time.

No. They met a long time ago.

So if there's history between two people, they know each other.

If there is no history between two people and, you know, it's their first time shaking

hands, saying: "Nice to meet you", they meet each other.

Okay? So this one we would never say...

This is a mistake I hear a lot.

A lot of people say:

"Oh. It's nice to know you."

We don't say that.

Okay? Because "know" means you met the person a long time ago and you've...

You know, you have a history together.

For this, this is the first time, we would use "meet" not "know".

Okay?

So another thing I wanted to say on this is a lot of the times you want to...

You know, you want to talk about how long has somebody been friends with somebody or

how long has somebody had this person for their teacher.

So the...

What we usually use is the present perfect, so we often say how long we've known someone.

Okay? So "known" is the past participle of "know".

So what you can say if somebody says:

-"Oh. How long have you known your husband for?"

-"I've known my husband for 10 years."

-"How long has Dave known Ken for?"

-"Dave has known Ken for five years."

Okay? So, again, this is asking about: How long is your history?

How long have you known each other for?

Again, this is key English.

It comes up a lot in conversation.

When you meet somebody, you know, and there's like a couple, you often say:

"Oh. How long have you known Bob for?

How long have you known Jennifer for?" Okay?

So now let's look at some of the differences with "met", or, sorry.

"Meet", "meet with", and "meet up with".

Okay, so quick question to you.

We've just gone over the difference between "know" and "met".

For these two: "I knew Chelsea last week.", "I met Chelsea last week."

which one do you think is correct?

Well, if you said number two: "I met Chelsea last week."

that's right. Oh, okay.

"I met Chelsea last week."

This one is correct, because usually you know somebody for a long time and we usually don't

use "knew" because it makes it sound like the person has died or that you don't know

them anymore.

So we usually use "know" or we use "have known".

We don't use "knew" a lot.

So, what you could say is: "I have known Chelsea since last week."

But if you're talking about, like, meeting first time, we would use "met".

"I met Chelsea last week."

Means: -"Nice to meet you, Chelsea."

-"Nice to meet you, too."

Okay? So in general what you're looking for is "met" for a first time meeting.

Now let's look at these other sentences and how we use them.

Okay, so we've talked about "know" meaning you have a history with somebody, and we talked

about "meet" meaning for the first time.

Now, what's the difference between: "meet", "meet with", and "meet up with"?

Let's look at that now.

So, I told you before "meet" has to do with strangers meeting for the first time, or maybe

they met a couple times but they don't know each other well.

Each time they see each other:

"Oh. It's nice to meet you."

So, for example...

This isn't true, but just for this example: "I met Taylor Swift twice."

This means Taylor Swift has no idea who I am.

Or maybe, you know, just at that meeting we say:

-"Hi. Nice to meet you.

My name's Emma. What's your name?"

-"Oh, I'm Taylor Swift."

And then we see each other maybe a couple years later:

"Oh. It's nice to meet you again."

But we don't know each other.

Okay?

We don't have history together.

We've only met two times.

Now, compare this to: "meet with".

"Meet with" is when we're talking about usually a business situation or some sort of formal

situation where we're talking about some sort of serious matter.

Okay? So, for example: "I met with my professor today."

Or: "Tomorrow I will meet with my boss to talk about our company.",

"Today I had a job interview. I met with some people about the job."

So we're usually talking about formal situations when we use "meet with", or again, this is

the past: "met with".

Okay?

So notice there is no "with" here, because it's the first time.

Here, there is "with", and it just indicates a formal meeting.

And for this one, you know, it doesn't have to be the first time.

Maybe you've met with your boss a hundred times before, so it can...

It has a different meaning than this.

Okay, the next one: "meet up with".

So, "meet up with" is another way to say hang out or do something social with people.

It's fun or it should be fun.

Okay?

So usually it's with friends, it can be with other people, too.

But when you meet up with somebody it's not a business meeting, it's not formal.

It's you're meeting for fun.

So, for example: "I met up with my friends tonight."

So, this is why people get really confused by these things because when we just have

"meet" with no prepositions after, it indicates a first or second meeting where you don't

know the person.

For "meet with" it indicates some sort of formal situation, whereas "meet up with" is

about a fun situation.

It's pretty much saying: "I'm hanging out with somebody.

I met up with my friends tonight.

I'm hanging out with my friends tonight."

Okay? So, we've covered a lot in this video.

We've covered the difference between "know" and "met".

Remember "know" is you have a history with someone, "meet" is, you know, you're pretty

much strangers.

We covered "meet" versus "meet with" versus "meet up with".

So this is a lot of different concepts and different vocabulary to remember.

So what I would like you to do is come

check out our website at www.engvid.com,

and there you can take a quiz to really practice

the differences between these four different words

and phrasal verbs.

So I invite you to come check out that website.

You can also subscribe to my channel.

SEE IT: Stephen Colbert mocks President Trump's Swedish terror remark on 'Late Show' - Duration: 2:02.

Never fjorget.

Stephen Colbert paid tribute to the "victims" of the Swedish terrorist attack that President Trump described over the weekend.

"You look at what's happening in Germany, you look at what's happening last night in Sweden," Trump said during a rally in Florida on Saturday. "Sweden, who would believe this?"

"No one. No one would believe that," Colbert answered on "The Late Show" Monday night. "Well, not no one, but maybe someone who skips their intelligence briefings."

No incident happened in Sweden Friday night; Trump was instead referring to a Fox News story that linked an increase in Swedish crime to immigrants and refugees, despite crime rates falling in the country.

Stephen Colbert mourned the victims of a non-existent terror attack in Sweden on Monday night's "The Late Show."

(Scott Kowalchyk/CBS)

"In fact, experts say 90% of Swedish crime actually occurs in 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,'" Colbert said.

The "Late Show" host also brought up former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt's tweet that asked "what (Trump) has been smoking."

"What has he been smoking? Uh…Vladimir Putin's d--k?" Colbert answered.

"Let's be real here, this is the president of the United States. He has access to everything and the latest intel at all time. Sir, for real, where did you get your information from?"

"I guess Trump only accepts intelligence reports with the logo, 'As seen on TV,'" Colbert said about the Fox News report that the President spoke of Saturday in Florida.

(Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

After pulling up the President's tweet about the Fox broadcast, Colbert had his answer.

"Oh, I guess Trump only accepts intelligence reports with the logo, 'As seen on TV,'" he said.

But despite the lack of any attack, the comedian mourned the imaginary victims.

"When will it begin?" he asked. "Just because this attack didn't happen doesn't mean we don't stand in solidarity with all the people who didn't suffer."

A heartbreaking memorial video of Swedish Fish, ABBA, Ikea, Swedish meatballs and the Swedish Chef ended the segment.

Texas' Jarrett Allen just put the NBA's dunk contest to shame.

The Longhorn's freshman power forward threw down a vicious dunk Monday night, posterizing West Virginia's Sogaba Konate in the first half of a 77-62 loss.

The dunk was so impressive that ESPN announcer Fran Fraschilla lost his cool, screaming, "the dunk of the year! Dunk of year and the league!"

4 Hour Work Week Review and Summary (Tim Ferriss)(As a Musician) - Duration: 5:17.

Today's review for the day

is the 4 hour work week by Tim Ferriss

Yeah I thought I'd give you a wee run down on what I thought of this book

I've read it a tonnes of times like

this is probably the book I've read the most, especially the audio version.

The audio version I've listened to the

most does that make any sense?

So Tim Ferriss (this guy there) he's a New York Times

bestselling author. He's written tons of

other books. He's written... the 4 hour chef

the 4 hour work week of course, the one which

we'll be talking about... the 4 hour body. He's recently released

tools of titans. He's done tonnes of books. He's kind of a Silicon Valley

entrepreneurial guy. Yeah, really fascinating guy.

So let's get into it. I'm also going to be

reviewing this book more as a musician and

a creative type

so that's important to bear in mind. In general

I think it's a very good book

it depends really what you're wanting in

life if you're looking for a few tips to

help make you a wee bit more productive and less

distracted then this book's great

certain sections of this book are great

If you're hoping to develop a product, outsource it

and then live off the kind of profits

of that for the rest of your life

and work for just four hours a week then that's

fine

like I realise as a musician

4 hours is probably the amount of practice that you want to

get done in one day

so it's not really realistic so some

of this book isn't practical for musicians. Bar that...

I think the book is still quite good for musicians

It's split up into four sections. D E A L

which stands for the deliberation

elimination automation and liberation

I think that's right...

I'll do it in the edit, it'll look super cool in the edit right?

Yeah that's right. And it's the E-section (Elimination) that

is the best one to focus on as a musician

Any musician wanting to become more productive with their time should

just focus on this section

Ok. So one of his main big ideas is 'focus on being

productive instead of busy.

Now I know it's very easy as a freelancer to

be running around doing lots of things you know?

Being busy, you know? And people ask you 'how

you doing?' and you go 'oh I'm so busy' which is

such a... like a... a cop out you know? Such a... like well

that's not how you doing that's like

that's a ridiculous answer to my

question what does that even mean you

know? So yeah, you should focus on being

productive instead of busy, you know? Being busy

doesn't count for anything. You don't necessarily

make money or make progress by being busy

You make progress by being productive

P...... There's a lot of p's in there. This is a big quote and I'll put

down there as well. 'What you do is

infinitely more important than how you

do it...

efficiency is still important but it is

useless unless applied to the right things'

And then he goes into great detail about how to

get the right things. One of the main things

that he goes on about in this, is that

we should focus more

on what we're doing instead of how we're doing it.

It's a very, you know, kind of self-helpy

kind of productive thing to think about

how I'm doing things. I need to kind of

make the time I've got most productive as

possible. But he's actually saying...

He says you need to cut out the stuff

that's not important - just literally remove that

Instead of trying to find a way to

make that stuff more productive, just take it out.

Just eliminate it. Get rid of it and then you'll

have much more other time to... to focus

on the good stuff. The actual

stuff that makes it better or that you

get work. There was a recent TED talk actually

that was also going on

about the same sort of thing. I'll put it

down in the... ... ... doobly-doo. So he goes on about

getting rid of distractions or, as he calls them, time wasters.

'Time wasters. Those things that

can be ignored with little or no consequence

Common time wasters include meetings

discussions, phone calls, web surfing

and email that is unimportant'. Yeah he says just

get rid of that stuff, you know?

Don't check your email 10 times a day. Don't

get email alerts to you - unless it's like

something that is urgent of course but

like you know don't get your Facebook messages

straight to your phone.

You don't need to like, know when somebody tweets you.

That stuff is not urgent. That stuff is not

important. That's just wasting time from

others stuff you could be

working on. Essentially, if you get rid of those things... then

you'll have more time in your day to do the things that

are important.

Yeah I don't want to say much more about the book

I could go on for a while, but...

I think you probably should pick up a copy

if you want. Or listen to the free version on

Youtube, that seems to get re-uploaded every

few months (which I will not link to because

I'm not affiliated etc). But another few good things to check out

in the book would be the 80/20 rule, that he goes on about...

with Pareto and his garden. Batching

I'm maybe going to upload a separate video about that as well at some point

And then also the Mexican Fishing

Story is a great one as well. I'll put that

in the description actually, thats quite a good one. But yeah thanks for listening

guys. If you've got any questions about this, or what I'm doing then please

let me know. I do read them all... obviously.

Hope you enjoy, and..........OK BYE.

So today's...

review for the day is the...

So today's review for the day

So today's review for the day it the 4 hour work week by Time Ferriss

You know, I do read them all. Obviously.

ONE OK ROCK | Don't Bore Us - Duration: 2:12.

Hi, i'm Sarah, and you're watching Next Big Thing

New Artist Spotlight:

For fans of:

One OK Rock have already started collecting fans from around the world through their tours

with 5 Seconds of Summer and All Time Low.

and with their new album Ambitions, Japan'sbest kept secret are ready for total world domination.

Newly signed to Fueled By Ramen- the label that's brought us all our emo favs like

Paramore, Panic! at the Disco, Fall Out Boy and Twenty One Pilots, these guys are ready to blow up.

Their album was released early this year, and is packed full of pop-rock anthems, reminiscent

of early 5 Seconds of Summer- especially in songs like Bedroom Warfare and Bombs Away.

But the album also keeps a gritty rock influence, similar to 30 Seconds to Mars with

their lead single Taking Off.

Ambitions features a couple of pretty big-name cameos too.

Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low lent a huge pop-punk influence to Jaded,

and 5 Seconds of Summer collaborated on the closing number, Take What You Want.

The 5SOS collaboration came about when they took the band on the US leg of

their Sounds Live Feels Live tour as the opening act, and the result is an almost perfect arena

anthem that you can't help but want to sing along to.

It's definitely destined to be a huge single at some point during their album cycle.

If you're looking for another sign that these guys are the real deal, they just announced

that Fall Out Boy will be joining them for their Japan Arena Tour as the OPENING ACT.

Don't Bore Us is certain that these guys are going to be the Next Big Thing

If you liked this, subscribe to our channel, and check out the video we did last week.

We put out a Next Big Thing video every Tuesday
