How Many People Would We Need To Colonize Another Earth? - Duration: 4:39.

If you were stranded on an desert island, on an exoplanet, hundreds of years away from

Earth - how many people would you need with you to survive?

Hey everyone, Emily here for DNews!

Elon Musk - founder of SpaceX - recently stated that he wants to put 1 million people on Mars

within a century.

He'd bring everyone there with about a thousand spaceships, each making multiple trips between

Earth and Mars.

If anything bad happened to threaten the existence of this colony, we could quickly replenish

the population with a new batch of humans sent from Earth.

This strategy works because it only takes a few months to reach Mars.

But what if we wanted to colonize a world beyond our solar system, hundreds of years

away?

How big of a spaceship would we need, and how many humans would we need to start with

to make colonization possible?

Take Proxima B as an example.

It's the closest planet we know about outside of our solar system.

It's rocky and similar in size to the Earth, and has the potential to support liquid water

on its surface.

The problem is, we can't just hop over there.

It's 4 light-years away.

With current technology, it could take us more than 20,000 years to get there.

That's about 800 generations of humans - making this type of journey fairly impossible.

Luckily, there are programs like the 100 Year Starship project and Stephen Hawking's Project

Starshot that are working to develop new propulsion technologies that could get us there much

sooner - possibly within a few hundred years.

Assuming they're successful, how many people would we need to start a colony?

A study published in Acta Astronautica suggests that you would need a starship filled with

at least 14,000 carefully screened people to end up with a stable population after a

multi-century interstellar journey.

Even more people - up to 44,000 would ideal.

You'd have to account for potential catastrophes like plague, asteroid strikes, or even war.

A few hundred years is a long time to be in one spaceship - a lot of things could happen!

In the study, the researchers used population genetics theory - modeling how the genetics

of a population changes over generations - and accounted for one catastrophe during a 5-generation

voyage.

Populations over 14,000 maintain good health during a trip of this length despite relatively

high inbreeding and reduced genetic diversity over time.

As a colony, we'd need to do everything we could to keep genetic diversity high - it's

something that plays an essential role in the adaptability and survival of a species.

Think about it - some humans would live out their entire life on this interstellar spacecraft.

As a child, you would grow up - have kids of your own with other passengers on board

- and eventually grow old and die.

But the only partners available to you would be the limited number of members on board

the spacecraft.

You'd have to be extremely careful when choosing your partner because inbreeding can

lead to some serious problems.

Just take a look at our early ancestors.

For thousands of years, Neanderthals, our ancient cousins, lived in small, isolated

populations, which lead to inbreeding.

By studying their fossils, researchers have discovered a range of deformities - many of

which are rare in modern humans.

An even larger issue with small populations may be the community's ability to formulate

their own culture, acquire knowledge and develop technology.

The combination of these issues could lead to the downfall of a species altogether.

We could have the same problems in a starship.

Maintaining a large population with sufficient genetic diversity is key to a successful,

sustainable colonization of a new world.

Of course, a population of 14,000 is still a lot of people, especially when you consider

the fact that the highest number of people we've ever brought into space at once is

eight.

In order to meet that 14,000-human minimum requirement - we're going to need a bigger

ship.

Or.. many medium-sized ships.

Distributing your population across multiple ships would also distribute the risk of losing

that population entirely.

And then maybe, you'd be able to distribute the human species to another solar system.

But of course, all of this assumes that humans can invent a propulsion system that's 100

to 1,000 times faster than anything we have today.

So perhaps, we should stick to the planets in our own backyard for now.

What if schools had to compete for students in the same way that businesses

have to compete for customers?

Would schools get better or worse?

There's no need to guess.

In almost every state and city where there is competition today,

educational outcomes improve – often dramatically.

This competition is called school choice, and many states and cities now embrace it.

With the old model, under which most American children still live, the government

– not the parent – decides which school children will attend.

Now, here's how school choice works:

The money follows the student.

Every child receives funding that their parents can direct to the school of their choice

– public, private, charter or even homeschool.

According to researchers at the University of Arkansas – in the most comprehensive

study done to date -- students in school choice programs saw their reading and math scores

improve by 27 percent and 15 percent, respectively.

Sounds like something we should get behind, doesn't it?

But for millions of families in my home state of California and in many others,

school choice is not a choice.

And there's one reason why: teachers' unions.

I've been a teacher for 28 years, and served as a leader in a local affiliate of the California

Teachers Association -- so I've seen this problem from the inside.

Teachers in California public schools are coerced to pay dues to the teachers' unions.

True, we cannot be forced to join, but we are forced to pay the union.

Their fees are mandatory - and expensive.

In California alone, the unions raise over 300 million dollars every year.

What do the unions do with all that money?

They lobby the government for more money - more money for public education.

That might sound good, but it's really just a smoke screen.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports that since 1970, public school attendance

in the U.S. has gone up by just five percent, while public school employment

has gone up 95 percent!

More public school employment means more dues for the unions.

But does it mean better schools?

Certainly not in California, which ranks 45th in the nation in reading and math despite

spending over 55 billion dollars a year on education.

That's over 52% of the state's total budget.

Yet rarely is anyone held accountable for these dismal results.

I've personally seen excellent, new teachers lose their jobs while incompetent, and even

abusive, veteran teachers keep theirs because of the unions' infamous

"last in, first out" layoff and tenure rules.

For these reasons and more, parents almost always prefer school choice when allowed to choose.

This is obviously true for wealthy parents who can afford to send their children to any

school they want, but it's equally true for middle class and poor parents

when they have a choice.

And here's the real giveaway: public school teachers are less likely to send their children

to public schools when given the choice.

Why are most school choice options better?

Because teachers at these schools are free from the unions' stifling work rules.

In short, they're free to teach.

And the administrators at these schools are also free to reward good teachers

and fire bad ones.

The teachers' unions don't like school choice because it means less money

and less power for them.

That's why they'll say anything, do anything, and spend any amount to stop it

– whether in the halls of the legislature, on the campaign trail backing pro-union candidates,

or on TV with sweet-sounding commercials.

During my public school teaching career, I have worked alongside many other teachers

to reform the unions from within.

Only when we realized that this wasn't possible did we take our case to a higher power – literally:

All the way to the United States Supreme Court.

The argument behind our lawsuit, Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, was simple:

Teachers should be able to decide for themselves - without fear or coercion -

whether or not to fund or join a union.

Unfortunately, in a split 4-4 decision, we lost.

But I haven't lost hope, because the unions and the politicians do not ultimately have the power.

We do.

If you believe, like me and millions of others, that parents - not the government -

should decide where their children go to school, and that competition will make all schools better,

then join the school choice movement.

We can have good schools for all our children.

We just have to make the choice – for choice.

Now, the third and most important key is the mix voice

Developing a strong mix voice is one of the most important pursuits of any serious singer

As it relates to both eliminating cracks and breaks in the voice

As well as being able to sing high notes with power and without strain

The mix or mixed blended voice is the blend between your two primary registers

Your chest voice and your head voice

Instead of straining on the higher notes

A strong mix will help you to effortlessly nail these notes with excellent pitch and with great power

The mix voice can be tricky to develop

Because so many people don't really understand what it is or really how to improve it

But it is the most important part of becoming a truly great singer

And when you can master your mixed voice, then the sky is the limit

How to Read Shakespeare! - Duration: 8:16.

Hi everyone, it's Lauren and welcome to

another episode in my series on

Shakespeare, in today's video I'm going

to be talking about how to read

Shakespeare, some tips and tricks to help

you feel comfortable with the language

It's no secret that a lot of people feel

quite intimidated by Shakespeare

because of the old-fashioned language

and because of the fact it's written in verse

one of the big barriers is that

Shakespeare wasn't really designed to be

read, Shakespeare was designed to be

performed so it does take a little bit

of imagination on our part to work out

what the actors are doing on stage whereas

in a book you have a lot more direction

as to what would be going on with the plot

Tip number one is to find a synopsis of

the play and read that before you

actually read the play itself. A lot of

Shakespeare's language is very poetic

and there's a lot of imagery in what he

writes because you've got to imagine

that a lot of these plays were performed

outside and there was minimal staging

and special effects so what

audienceswere there for was the poetry

and Shakespeare was able to paint a

picture for them with his words but that

does mean that when you're trying to

work out what's going on sometimes

characters go off on tangents and talk

about something else

and while that may be very beautiful it

might be completely irrelevant to what

is actually happening in the plot in

very basic terms, so if you are

struggling with Shakespeare's language

or you get to a passage that you really

don't understand, if you have in the back

of your mind a basic outline of the plot

you know that as you're reading it if you

get lost you'll be able to find your way

again quite easily. Tip number two, one

of the most important ones is to find

some adaptations of Shakespeare, there

are tons of films, you can go and see

Shakespeare on stage, you can see tv

adaptations, film adaptations,

I'm sure there are tons of clips on

youtube. Seeing an actor perform Shakespeare

can really do wonders to break down the

barriers of language because they

really understand what Shakespeare's words are trying

to say and I find it especially helps you

to watch an experienced person read

Shakespeare because then your ear gets atuned

to the rhythm and cadence of

Shakespeare which is very similar, he

tends to write in iambic pentameter and

once you get used to that rhythm of

language it makes it a lot easier for

you to hear that in your head when

you're reading it alone

not to mention the fact that

Shakespeare's themes are absolutely

universal of love and loss and revenge

and they are fantastic to watch if you

are struggling with reading it, then

watching an adaptation can really help

bring these things out. A fantastic

online resources the No Fear Shakespeare

project, so all of Shakespeare's plays

are in the public domain and can be

found online, if you type in 'No Fear

Shakespeare' you will find a website

which has every single one of his plays. On one

side of the screen you have the original

text and on the other side you have a

modern-day translation and I find it

especially helpful when there are

sections of Shakespeare which are prose,

which are discussions between people

because on this side of the screen you just

end up with all of the dick jokes which

you would not get on a first read

because that colloquialism, that banter

something that we've lost in translation

interestingly, I find it actually a lot

easier to understand Shakespeare when

he's doing this high imagery kind of

poetic parts of his soliloquies and then

when it is just the everyday banter

between the servants for example and

No Fear Shakespeare t is very helpful with

that. There's also a ton of analysis of

Shakespeare online if you want to get

really deep into the language and what

Shakespeare really means, then you can

just type in a specific soliloquy and

you'll get loads of responses come up

and finally I have some examples for you

I'm going to help you with this reading

experience this is my copy of Romeo and

Juliet, you can see that most of it is

written in verse. Iambic pentameter is

what Shakespeare uses mostly and that

means that they are ten syllable lines

however that is just the way that it's

written on the page to keep it in the

rhythm of the verse, if you have a

sentence that is longer than ten

syllables then it will get to a certain

point and then the sentence will continue on

another page but that doesn't mean

that's how you would read it, or how an

actor on stage would actually say the line

so for example here is Juliet. You would not

read afraid like this -

What's in a name? That which we call a

rose. By any other word with sweet. So

Romeo would were he not Romeo call'd.

Retain that dear perfection which he

owes. No, no, no! Make sure when you're

reading it that you're paying attention

to the grammar, to the punctuation and

you're reading the sentences off the line

and you're not thrown by the

indents here. As I've already said another

thing that can throw you off your

reading experience is the excessive

almost use of imagery. I have another

example here from Romeo 'But soft! What

light through yonder window breaks? It is

the east and Juliet is the Sun. Arise

fair Sun and kill the envious moon who

is already sick and pale with grief that

thou, her maid art far more fair than she'

so Romeo is just going off on a tangent

here because Juliet has just come to the

window and he's describing her beauty, he's

describing the effect that she's having

on him and Shakespeare is using poetry

to convey emotions to you but you don't

really need to understand this about the

Sun and the moon, Imean it is

interesting but that's not the point

the real point is this - 'but soft!' Hey!

hang on one moment, what's going on over

there? A light has come through that

window over there and it is the east, it's

like the dawn and Juliet is the Sun

rising and bringing that light the rest

of the world

later on he says 'It is my lady; O! It is

my love: O that she knew she were. She

speaks yet she says nothing.

What is that her eye discourses? I will

answer it

I'm too bold, 'tis not to me she speaks.' So

through Romeo's words we're actually

getting what Juliet is doing, there aren't any

stage directions here but he is talking

to her, he's wishing that she knew that

he was there and he sees that she's

talking to herself, looking around the

garden, he thinks she can see him he goes

to wave to her...Oh no no! So it just takes a

slightly more closer look at the text to

not only get what Romeo was saying but

also to give you a vision of what is

happening on stage as well

Another example that I really like of

the texts really communicating what an actor

would be going on stage is this

soliloquy from Macbeth, it is just

before Macbeth is about to go and kill

Duncan and he's having a vision - 'Is this

a dagger which I see before me the

handle toward my hand?

Come let me clutch thee. I have been not

and yet I see thee still. Art though not fatal

vision sensible to feeling as to sight?

Or art thou but a dagger of the mind, a false

creation proceeding from the heat-opressed

brain?' So not only do we have that

Macbeth is seeing a dagger in front of

him, but he's trying to grab it and

realizing that he can't 'art thou not sensible

to feeling as to sight?' like I can see

you

why can't I feel you? 'I see thee yet in form

and palpable as this which now I draw. Though

marshall'st me the way that I was going

and such an instrument I was to use.' so

again I see you there as palpable as this

which now I draw - this dagger which I have

with me and which i'm drawing from my

belt, to me this dagger I see is as real

as the one that I'm holding here which

the audience can see, and you are showing,

'thou marshall'st me the way' you are

showing me the way that I need to go to

commit murder

so it's always worth bearing in mind

that it's a person delivering a speech to the

audience, if you try and read it as you

would read a normal book then you're

only going to get half the story. So I

hope that was helpful if Shakespeare is

something that you are a little bit

nervous about, I know the language can be

difficult, the 'thous' the 'thys' the

'th'arts'

but it really is quite simple, the

English follows exactly the same grammar as

we have now, it's just an older form of 'you'

these are things that you can look up quite

easily and once you understand them

it really is just like reading plain

English and you won't even notice that

they're in the text. So let me know how you

Negativity Sandwich - USE WHENEVER YOU HAVE SOMETHING NEGATIVE TO SAY! - Duration: 3:28.

One of my all-time favorite trick is

something I like to call the negativity

sandwich

this trick is useful in any scenario in

which you need to tell someone something

negative it could be a friend was asking

you for some constructive criticism on

his art it could be when you have to

break up with your girlfriend

it could be when you have to give an

intervention to your buddy about his

drug problem

all you have to do is say something

positive first then say whatever

negative thing you have to say and then

immediately follow this up with another

positive statement what this does is it

reduces the bad feelings associated with

the negative statement when you're

interacting with others they are

significantly less likely to get

consumed emotionally this is great for

getting constructive points across

without damaging your relationships with

them for example when I was in charge of

the sales team i had an employee was

really good at sales was always late and

when you let one person be late the rest

follow my brought him into my office and

I said Jay you're really good salesman

without a doubt one of the best in the

office you're almost everything i could

ask for

however this constant lateness man if I

keep letting you slide the rest of the

team is going to start slacking to if it

happens again I'm going to have to let

you go

which is something i really don't want

to do because i like you a lot as a

friend and I respect your skills as a

salesperson and I know if you just show

up on time you're going to close a lot

more deals and then you'll be without a

doubt the best salesperson in this

office as you can see right here the

first part of this conversation was very

positive the middle was sort of negative

it was pointing at his faults and i

finished it with another positive

statement and after just talked with him

he was never late again here's another

example a good friend of mine has a drug

problem

this is how I would approach him in

regards to that issue

look Tyler I'm going to be completely

honest with you I think you're really

smart dude some of the things you say

sound like they came right out of a

philosophy textbook i have no doubt no

doubt in my mind that you have two

potential to accomplish anything you

want in life

that this constant abuse man it's

ruining your life you're losing the

respect of people around you are having

issues with woman you're accomplishing a

lot less than what you're capable of

you're a drug addict if you just focus

your time and energy on something

productive i'm sure you can do anything

that you like I really do think you're

smarter than half the guys I hang out

with you have a lot of potential Tyler a

lot

don't let drugs take that from you again

you can clearly see the first part of

this conversation is very positive the

middle is negative and the last part of

the conversation is again positive the

reason the negativity sandwich works so

well is because you're providing

positive emotions at the beginning and

ending of an event people are more

likely to remember the beginning and

endings of certain events so when they

look back at the conversation that you

had don't think of it in a very positive

light you'll say wow you know that was a

very constructive conversation and

they'll think about the things you said

however when you don't do this some

people will take it the wrong way and

they'll take it as a personal insult you

feel like the whole conversation itself

was just- district has helped me through

a lot of critical conversations in my

life so I hope you guys found some value

Welcome to your singing lessons

My name is Eilish San and today we will see the vocal classification or registers

In choirs and classical singing it is important to group the voices, as they are usually

composed by sound colors and registers

In classical singing, the voices are classified, without entering into unusual or specific records

in six; Three for men and three for women

For women they are: Soprano, with the lightest and highest voice, Mezzo-soprano,

with a medium voice with a lot of brightness, and Alto, with the lowest voice, with great sonority

and resonance

For men: Tenor, with a clear and sharp voice, Baritone, with a medium voice, darker

in high tones and brighter in low tones, and Bass, which is the lowest voice, with a

very dark color and a cavernous tone

Registers are a way of classifying voices by the range of notes a singer

can sing, defined as low, mid and high

In modern music the voices are not classified but it's good to know them, and if you're going to sing

classical singing, it may be useful for you

If not, look for the individuality of your voice

and what makes it unique, and sing what you want to

regardless of your register

And today I want to talk about how being able to speak different languages

and how switching from one language to another can change your personality completely.

Now as you may already know, I'm half British English and half French speaking Belgian

And sometimes I feel like when I switch from one language to another, I kind of become a different person

So here to help me illustrate what the hell I'm talking about

Hello everybody. How are you?

So Lenn is the french speaking side of me and she's here to explain

the differences she's noticed whenever we switch from one language to another

We are certainly different from each other

When you speak English you are more confident

You are able to create some kind of alter ego to get over our usual shyness

Whereas when we speak French, probably because we've lived here the longest

Our shyness seems to have its roots inside the French language

So it's harder to create a new persona around the language.

What?

Nothing, nothing. I'm sorry. I was just thinking about

Someone who would actually be enjoying this right about now...

You're being stupid.

So yes, since English isn't a language I get to use on a day-to-day basis, it's easier to construct a personality around it

It's kind of my super hero mask.

Also maybe because English has a creative meaning to it

Remember how we discovered an aspect of our creativity during our advanced English lessons in high school

It really is thanks to the English language that we got access to most of our creativity

Yeah definitely.

Also English is the language in which I watch most of my movies

and read most of my books so it definitely symbolises creativity

Do you think that English symbolizes the real world, the reality of things?

I hadn't really thought about it before but that's exactly it:

French is the real world, the everyday world where we all speak French

Whereas English is the imaginary and creative world where anything can happen

And I don't know if you've noticed but

When you're comforting me whenever I'm sad or anxious, you comfort me in English

It really is the reassuring language, the magic language sort of..

Yeah that's so true. That's so weird. I love what's coming out of this conversation.

Yeah well that's easy for you to say: you have the magic language, the creative and imaginary language

Whereas I'm stuck with the real world

Yeah I guess it is, though we do compliment each other really well and we balance things out?

And imagine! If we do manage to master other languages, there could be more of us here...

Oh my God, no. I hope not, there's already way too many of us up in here, am I right?

I'm about to share with you three simple tips

The first key component to improving your singing voice is vocal agility

Vocal agility is the ability to move quickly and effortlessly from one note to the next

But also has its place in developing a free and beautiful vibrato

See, vocal agility is an aspect of singing that almost nobody talks about

But is oftentimes the difference between an average singer and a professional singer

And if you've ever heard someone singing with poor pitch and rhythm

Then you know how bad it can sound

The second key is resonance

This is the area that will separate you from having a thin, timid sounding voice

Because of the reverberation inside of various resonators inside your chest, throat, and sinus cavity

Most people think that fullness and volume come from pushing harder

But the truth is that you can have a very powerful voice with little effort

When you are properly using the resonators built into your frame

If you understand and develop your resonators

You will almost instantly sound like a much better singer

Now, the third and most important key is the mix voice

Developing a strong mix voice is one of the most important pursuits of any serious singer

As it relates to both eliminating cracks and breaks in the voice

As well as being able to sing high notes with power and without strain

The mix or mixed blended voice is the blend between your two primary registers

Your chest voice and your head voice

Instead of straining on the higher notes

A strong mix will help you to effortlessly nail these notes with excellent pitch and with great power

The mix voice can be tricky to develop

Because so many people don't really understand what it is or really how to improve it

But it is the most important part of becoming a truly great singer

And when you can master your mixed voice, then the sky is the limit

And I believe that

While there are many factors to becoming a better singer
