Fabio Zanon GuitarCoop Interview The Romantic Guitar - Duration: 17:30.
Fabio, today there is much concern, I think,
among guitarists with playing new pieces,
with producing new transcriptions of orchestral works.
Yet, in this album, you have chosen to record Romantic 19th century pieces,
which include transcriptions of Schumann and Liszt.
Why did you choose this idea?
Well, this is a period with which I have enormous affinity.
If I had to name the composers that really move me,
that have been with me since a very early age,
I would choose the composers from the first romantic generation,
those that achieved maturity around 1830:
Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Berlioz, Bellini, and Mendelssohn.
When I have the opportunity to conduct orchestral works,
this is the repertoire that I often choose,
and later this year I'll have the opportunity to do so.
So what happens?
You have, in this period, a very important moment in the guitar,
especially between 1830 and 1850,
which gave the world very interesting composers. It is a generation:
Mertz, Coste, Bobrowicz, a few smaller composers and, a little later, Regondi
who, given his prodigy status, began his career around the 1840s.
So this is a generation exactly contemporaneous with
Liszt, Chopin, and Schumann.
These composers very likely interacted with or knew one another.
There is a piece by Coste that is dedicated to Berlioz;
there are recital programs of Mertz in which he shares the stage with Clara Schumann…
So these people navigated similar circles despite the fact that, in this period,
there was an entire musical practice devoted to grand audiences,
to great virtuosic works, to great orchestral pieces.
But there was also music for domestic use, and
it is here that the histories of the guitar and piano converge.
In certain pieces by Schumann or even Chopin, you get the sense
that his sound is directed to a single person or a select group,
a small cohort that are listening to it, or
sometimes even to the very individual playing the piece.
This is not music intended for the stage; it is intended
for someone to play to him or herself,
and I often get a similar feel from the guitar repertoire of that age.
It is clear that the guitar repertoire of the composers I mentioned
includes works that are very interesting, but
but from the point of view of compositional technique, of daring,
of truly knowing how to compose, it is very difficult to compare them.
We guitarists always have a bit of an inferiority complex:
"Gosh, there is no Schumann piece for guitar!" or
"Gosh, there is no Chopin piece for guitar!"
Of course there isn't and there shouldn't be, but the challenge is:
how do we establish a dialogue between works originally written for guitar
and this wider musical environment?
After all, these were works that shared a purpose.
So this is where the idea to unite one world with the other came from,
that is, to take intimate works – so to speak –
of Mendelssohn and Schumann, works that were in domestic use,
in the realm of the amateur pianist,
with the works of Coste, Mertz, Bobrowicz and, a little later, Regondi,
who was particularly tied to the aesthetic of Mendelssohn.
This is visible even in the titles of their works,
which is often similar, so I think the goal was to reclaim this repertoire,
removing it from the exclusive domain of specialists –
because there are great specialists that frequently play Regondi and Mertz.
I really admire their work with original instruments and so on, but
I really felt the lack of contextualization of these works in the wider world
of classical music in the period between revolutions
in the 19th century, between 1830 and 1848.
And how did you work the transcriptions?
I played many pieces from the Album for the Young by Schumann –
and went so far as to transcribe about fifteen of them –
but when it came time to create this program, I recalled
Julian Bream's transcription of the Kinder-Sonate, a piece he did not record,
and considering the instrument I was planning to record with
and the fact that the piece had been in my head for a long time,
I decided to add the Sonate to the list.
At this time, in 1853, Schumann…
Schuman had seven kids,
and his three daughters were eight, ten, and twelve years old,
so he wrote three sonatas: an easier one for the eight-year old,
one of medium difficulty for the ten-year old, and a harder one for the twelve-year old.
The one I play is the easiest, the very first one,
and it gains a dimension of delicateness on guitar, a very intimate feeling.
It explores the psychology of the child to such an acute extent
that I could not but play it.
As for the others, the Mendelssohn had already been transcribed by Tárrega.
I cleaned up the transcription a bit, corrected a few notes,
and added a few things here and there that Tárrega had not included.
Liszt was my own idea.
He is a composer that I truly admire. I admire his artistic personality.
Many times I object to certain works,
those that employ a certain empty virtuoso style
that is also part of his personality, but he is a composer that I know well,
a composer I studied a lot, and I really wanted to play him,
so I included Liszt as a kind of epilogue to this period
since he is the only composer of this generation that died in old age, that is,
that spent the second half of the 19th century writing music.
And the works I recorded are from Liszt's final period, of Liszt "the sage."
This is the music of an already depressed person, a forgetful person,
someone that no longer held any illusions about life, and hence serves
as a kind of epilogue for this program of composers that are all young.
This program is the music of young people, of iconoclasts,
of people that sought to propose new ideas,
to challenge commonplaces, to give a new direction to music.
And what about the composers that wrote originally for guitar:
Mertz, Regondi, Bobrowicz?
Like I said, this is a domain that is very tied to the specialist
working with original instruments, so I tried to choose pieces
that would hold their own next to composers that are frankly
– Schumann, Mendelssohn – somewhat unbeatable, so I chose music
that could interact well,
music that did not seem interesting only for the historian.
So I chose La Source du Lyson by Coste because the piece has
a pictorial character, a descriptive nature that somewhat evinces
his association to Berlioz, or at least with the aesthetic of Berlioz.
In the case of Regondi, I think this is one of the great works of the guitar repertoire.
I think he is, in fact, a composer that can hold his own,
that has space, that has something to say when compared
to the greatest composers of his time, and so there, I tried to send a message
in a work that I consider to be of high caliber.
And Bobrowicz, well, he is an example of a great discovery.
As far as I know, he has never been recorded and if he has, the Grande Polonaise
my chosen piece – certainly wasn't.
Bobrowicz is largely relevant for two reasons: first,
he was a political refugee and this ended his career.
At the age of 24, he no longer played the guitar because he didn't have the space to.
He was required to repeatedly present himself before the authorities of Prussia
and did not have permission to travel.
He dedicated himself to something else after a certain age,
but he did publish this First Grande Polonaise.
There was no second or third.
It was published at about the same time as the grand military-like polonaises of Chopin.
I doubt that he knew the works of Chopin,
which were published a little later, but in a certain way,
he is a composer that inaugurates a manner of thinking about music,
a nationalistic genre that is nationalistic in the true
political sense of the term.
He was a Polish patriot, someone who had fought in the Polish independence wars.
Since his side lost, he had to move to Germany.
So this is it: I wanted to introduce a guitar composer that was ahead of his time,
someone who, like Chopin, made strides towards infusing
his music with political significance.
And in the case of Mertz, I recorded a Song Without Words.
Needless to say, this is related to the works of Mendelssohn,
so this is the dialogue between
these [guitar] composers and the more canonical composers of first Romanticism.
Did any of these pieces bring you particular satisfaction,
or speak to you in a more direct fashion?
Ah, I think that Schumann is a composer that is always fun to play because
he embodies the paradox of Romanticism that inspires us to this day.
The great questions of modernity have their origin there,
in the first romanticism, for instance, the question of miniature,
of the endless declaration, of the moving statement
that has meaning unto itself but that opens itself up to wider significance…
a nostalgia for childhood, an understanding of the child's universe.
I have small children so I'm very involved with this aspect
of the life of every person, and so this, for me, was very special.
Of the guitar composers, it was very fun to learn to play Regondi.
I think it is a piece of the highest caliber and I think it must be played
in a bold and imaginative way, in a way that really makes it grow or flower.
Regondi is a composer who gives the impression of working beneath
an enormous stone which he, through his creative energy, launches away from himself.
This is Regondi, for me.
Bobrowicz, of course…The first recording of a work is always a great privilege.
I hope that it helps put him on the map.
And what about the choice of instrument?
This time you chose a Bouchet from 1964….
Yes, this is a jewel. I think that the Bouchet is, at the same time,
a guitar that possesses all of the necessary characteristics of any great instrument
– clarity, projection, beauty of color – but also,
and this is what is most interesting for this repertoire, has a particular voice.
The quality…not just the technical quality of being a clear, tuned instrument
with good vertical division of voices, but having a beautiful tone color…
It is pointless to play a piece with a gorgeous melody
while your guitar, rather than singing like Franco Corelli, sings like Donald Duck.
It doesn't work…Everything should be cantabile, but the question is:
sung on what? Do you want a baritone? An alto? A soprano?
And if you want a soprano, do you want a soprano leggero or a dramatic soprano?
Do you want a more present vibrato or one that is more discrete?
I think this guitar brings together all of these immaterial features
that in a certain sense make it adequate for the singing of voices,
for this repertoire to really sing through.
It has a very round color and its attack is…
it explodes with delicacy like a soap bubble in air.
It has that explosion but is at the same time delicate.
It is impossible to produce a bad sound in this guitar.
Regardless of how metallic your play, the color is never unpleasant.
It never assaults you, regardless of which region of the instrument you play on.
It sings with beauty, its color has a certain pedigree,
and so this itself would make it adequate for any repertoire,
but this natural sweetness, this intrinsic beauty of sound
was what weighed most in choosing it for this repertoire.
I think it is similar in this way to an instrument from the time period,
which would have been a Stauffer or
another instrument from the decades of the 19th century,
but has all of the advantages of the modern instrument,
like that of being more comfortable to play, of having…
Essentially, it has all the things which we are accustomed to
to having in the guitars we currently use.
Fabio, I don't remember ever hearing…
I think it is not very common for one to experience Liszt on guitar.
What piece did you record and what is it like?
Look, Liszt is a composer with multiple personalities.
His career was very long.
He started as a grand virtuoso of the piano and
his production from that time period suggests this.
It is music with excess of everything:
excess notes, excess virtuosity, excess of expression:
it is a very excessive music and I appreciate it at times,
but it would be ridiculous to try it on guitar.
There is even a letter by Liszt in which he writes:
"I'm writing a work called the Battle of the Huns. Needless to say it is not for guitar."
This is the only time he mentions the guitar in his correspondence.
Now, after a certain phase, he…
well, he had a life with very extreme highs and lows and at the end of it,
he was very tied to the Catholic Church, was giving many piano lessons,
and began to suffer from depression and loneliness.
He lost his children who all died very young, and, in this way,
suffered a succession of great disappointments
that brought about depression and insomnia.
He lived with this burden by writing music.
The only thing is, that the short piano works he wrote during this period
He didn't show them to anyone.
He was ashamed because they were works he considered incomplete, even sickly.
He thought they were somehow the portrait...
something bad going on in his mind and
did not think they were adequate parts of his opus, of the legacy he hoped to leave.
But the creator doesn't choose what his imagination produces,
and so he composed these works, many of them with religions inclinations.
This is the case of the Andantino, which I recorded.
It is a piece that is less than two minutes long, but has a serenity,
it encapsulates a sense of religious ecstasy…
I don't know any pieces for guitar that have this.
And the Nuages Gris, the Gray Clouds, is a paradigmatic piece by Liszt.
It is also less than five minutes long, but it is already atonal.
We know the music is in G minor because the key signature shows us that,
but G minor is never stated.
Liszt is constantly employing harmonic suspensions that remain unresolved,
probably a portrait of his own depression and insomnia,
of the natural pessimism that lodged itself in his mind during this period.
Essentially, the piece is a visionary work.
We will have to wait until Bartók to get something similar,
in fact, so it acts as a type of denouement
for this entire Romantic generation that began with so much energy.
These were tragic lives, lonely lives.
All of them: Corte, Mertz, Bobrowicz
died young or had to abandon their career.
Schumann died mad, Schubert died at 31 and Mendelssohn at 38.
That is, they were brief lives.
What is the feeling of participating in a project that is a little
little different from what we are used to,
from the traditional outmoded recordings of the 20th century?
How does it feel to participate in a project in which downloads, videos,
CDs and recordings are released all at the same time, as we do at GuitarCoop?
Look, I think we have our own path to follow because, if you think about it,
had I proposed this repertoire to a multinational recording company,
belonging to a large conglomerate, those responsible would have read the names
– Mertz, Bobrowicz, Coste – and would have laughed.
"How am I going to sell this CD?" they would have said.
Since we are doing something a little more targeted here,
I felt the freedom to choose the music that I really wanted to play,
and when you do what you love,
the chances of achieving better results are higher.
So I now have a feeling of accomplishment,
that I did something creative, something gratifying,
something that I'm going to be proud of in ten or twenty years.
I think if it weren't for our attempt to take on
the administrative side of recording and produce it with our own hands,
none of this would be viable.
The fact that we also have an Internet platform where we can show
short excerpts of the music, a section of one piece or the other
in order to attract the curiosity of our listeners…
People can, for instance, click on the website in the hopes of listening to
one of my recordings (whatever it might be), may end up finding a piece that
that calls their attention and may want to search for other works of the same album.
So I think that this culture we have today of listening to smaller excerpts…
It is no longer the culture of the record simply.
People will be attracted to the CD through other means.
If it were not for GuitarCoop, I do not see how
I could produce an album with this repertoire in particular.

or the degree to which you're paralyzed but it's important to know that just because your
brain injury is mild doesn't mean you may not have severe damages.
You could be very severely damaged.
So when we talk about the brain, remember, it's a very sensitive organ.
It has over 600 miles of cells, quadrillions of connections and even concussive forces
from a rear-end collision could cause loss of memory, dizziness, and headaches and that

So I'm going to talk with you about mild traumatic brain injuries and when I do, I'm going to
use the mnemonic MILD.
M, one of the things to know is most of the brain injuries in our country are mild.
I, with regard to images, you could have a mild traumatic brain injury and all your imaging
studies being negative that means MRI's, CT scans, those x-rays, and those can all be
negative but you could still have a mild traumatic brain injury.
L, loss of conscious.

And finally, D is for damages.
Damages in a mild traumatic brain injury can be severe.
The brain has over 600 miles of neuron cells with a quadrillion connections and even forces
from a rear-end collision can interfere with those connections and cause permanent injury.
Fifteen percent of people who have mild traumatic injuries have permanent injuries.
Why?
Primarily because they experienced some concussions or concussive forces when they were younger
and then this can add on top of it and so it's really important that you get tested
specifically with neuropsychological testing to measure the severity and the permanence
of your mild traumatic brain injury.
Often, you can get absent seizures, you can get memory loss, you can have difficulty speaking,
difficulty remembering and all these things.
Although you can walk and talk and dress yourself, if you can't remember things and have difficulty
with your short term memory, that makes it very difficult for you to function effectively
in your job and to function as an effective member of your family.
So remember just because you suffer a mild traumatic brain injury doesn't mean that your
damages are mild.
It's very important that you get the appropriate testing especially neuropsychological testing
