Goodmorning and welcomeback to my channel
I'm Lexi and today we're gonna review something
so if you're here because you're interested in Germany
you might want to close this video
and come back next week when I'm going to publish a video about
Germany or German, I haven't decided yet
but, still, that's gonna be the topic
today we're talking about sci-fi, a serie that came out this year
maybe while talking a little bit slowlier, so that you may understand what I'm saying
I was talking this fast to send away those who aren't interested
before they start whining that they don't care.
Today we're talking about sci-fi, a serie that came out this year called Westworld
and I suggest to all of you who didn't watch it to close this video
because there are going to be a lot of spoilers
I believe there's an option to add the vids to a "watch later" thing
I'm sure it exist because I've used it sometimes, but don't ask me howI did that
because I can be messy, I tend to lose a lot of things
buttons included. Let's talk about the plot
Think of a theme park which is basically a role play
like those you play online
but live, where
you don't interact with other people
but with non playing characters
which are robots, androids
and up to this point sounds cool.
A little less splendid are the conditions these robots are forced to live in
because they're not aware they're robots
they believe to be regular people living
in the only possible world
so they live their stories
following their program
but they have no idea they're following one
this wouldn't be a big deal
if this wasn't a cruel world, where human players,
the visitors, like to kill everyone
and do whatever they please with these androids
which I think brings us back to those philosophical talks
Plato's cave-style, with slaves
who don't understand their condition
and I think this is the core plot
whatthis whole serie is based on: these robots
who don't realise they're machines
but they would have all what they need to
this is why when I reviewed the last Star Wars
I wondered about how right is doing something like it
I mean reprogramming a droid, because
this is what this serie focuses about
all the androids working inside this park
they have no idea they're working
they think they're just living
in this real life Far West
bloody, violent...
the worst parts of the human's soul
are shown inside this serie
and this is the starting point
what I like in this serie
is that there are many different characters
and any of them has his own story
and they're all laced in a wonderful way
meaning that if you like a character
and only like his story
you're going to get some new detail in every episode
and at the same time you'll get hints about the other stories
there's something that reminds me of Lost
in the way all the plots are interconnected
especially because no story is clear until the end
you get hints in every episodes
but they won't connect until the last episodes
I got the feeling that was really similar to... I don't know if you saw it
"The Island" it's an old movie, it came out...
dunno, ages ago, 2001?
something like it, old thing
the main character was a clone
who didn't know he was one
and he used to live on this island where was told
to those living there, to the clones,
they were the last survivors of the human race
after a catastrophic event that destroyed
the earth surface
and the only chance they had to go out
of this structure where they were living
was going to "the Island"
there was a lottery to sort the lucky winners who could
go back to the earth's surface and they made it sound something wonderful
a place where all dreams come true
but then you realise that going on the island
actually meant dying, because it meant
that the person who commissioned the clone
a copy of himself, needed a healty organ
wanted the child
they used a clone to conceive
and this meant the death of the clone who generated it
of the clone who had that organ that was commissioned
so I see many parallelisms here
in the sense that here androids don't understand their condition
until...
they begin to dream
and in these dreams some elements appear
from their previous programming
thay should have been deleted
but that weren't
in the beginning programmers don't understand
those who write the plots don't get how it's possible
they think it's a virus
so they decide...
some want to retire all the androids, because they're in charge of security
and say: this is not worth the risk
those who are in charge of writing the stories can only think about their plots
and say: wait! If you retire 200 androids...
how am I supposed to work?
How do I write plots without characters?!
so you see the different personalities
and how they're all focused
on their goal
on what they need to achieve
and many times these goals contrast with one another.
I loved the interpretation of Anthony Hopkins
and about Anthony Hopkins
let me add one point about Anthony Hopkins
I think he was casted after someone saw "the silence of the lambs"
because dr. Ford, his character is really similar
to his Hannibal Lecter. I'm sorry, I couldn't help but to notice.
I think he's there for that
because there are some similarities
in the way Ford plays behind anyone else
and it feels like the characters' stories develope
but that in the end, who's behind every detail
and controls the whole situation, despite what others think
is, in the end, him.
Another think that reminded me of Hannibal is the fact he's cruel
and fake and...
the way he remains untouched
by the worst actions
which makes you say: oh, look, Hannibal Lecter is in the wrong serie!
even more for visually... it's him...
so it's hard to remember it's not.
Another main character, and I think this is a brilliant idea
is a main character that doesn't even appear on screen
is dr. Ford's business partner, Arnold
the man that together with dr. Ford designed the park
or, at least, developed the idea and designed the androids
it's interesting to notice the differences in the mentalities of these 2 characters
with Ford being the consimist, the
capitalist, only interested in selling
making money with what he created
wth these androids. He thought this park
where the androids are machines
tools to use and make money with
forced to live horrible stories, gory,
living nightmares from the NPC's point of view
that allow the guests
to vent their anger, to vent...
their worst sides, thet they would usually hide
and here is time to talk about William
but one thing at a time or I'm gonna lose my point
which I'll do anyway, so... never mind.
my Italian gets every day worse...
it's your fault though. It's because I'm doing these
German lessons, that's why my Italian gets embarassing
so just know it's your fault! :P
One thing we quickly learn is that we never see Arnold because
he's dead.
for a while you suspect he committed suicide
then you suspect Ford killed him
eventually... you still don't get a clear picture of what happened to Arnold
until the end where is shown...
but I won't spoiler. Non on this! :P
Arnold was more of a scientist
so he was interested in the potential of these beings
interested in human nature and how to develope it
inside an artificial creature
he wanted to create an artificial intelligence
and he had a theory on how to develope it that I think
was very interesting and went through 3 phases
that I obviously don't remember
which brought them to reach consciousness
and to bring this consciousness to them
he realised he can't just instil it inside them
you can't program intelligence
inside an adroid
you have to give it the tools
to independently develope it, which is actually
what we're doing nowadays in our attempts to create an AI.
Speaking about this I found very interesting an interview
to a researcher working in the AI field
with these androids that are trying to
emulate human expressions
and he was asked if andre... yeah... andreids...
if the androids in this serie were believable
and the answer was yes, that nowadays
there's no way we can produce such sophisticated robots
but it's the direction we're heading to
so it's at least plausible
we don't have the tech yet to create something like this
but in the future yes, they'll probably be like this
one thing he was asked was if it's believable that when an android rfeaks out
it begins quoting Shakespeare
and the answer was again that yes, it's likely
because he might switch back to its core programming
where a programmer might have installed some random quote
at the beginning of his work
possibly something like random Shakespeare quotes
so we might have a freaking android quoting Shakespeare.
I'd be curious, if any of you is into the robotic field
programming, or something like it
what do you think of this serie from the technical point of view?
Because I obviously only have common knowledge about this topic
because I have a curious nature
speaking of which, I guess these androids would perfectly be able to pass the Turing test
since they don't even realise
they're androids
except for... there's something interesting here
there's this character called Maeve
who is the... I'm missing a word here
how is called the lady who owns a brothel?
and eventually she manages thanks to these dreams
to wake up while she's being repaired
and to set an agreement with the guys who repaired her
she convinced them to help her escape the park
and this is another interesting topic. You read it behind every action
of the different characters
the question is:
who's more human, humans or the androids?
Because we see these cruel, violent humans on one side
who justify anything by saying "it's a game"
and use it to show what they have inside
whilst you perceive the will to live these androids have
and even Maeve, who's shown as the cruelest
the most evil and violent of the androids, who coldbloodedly kills humans
because she doesn't recocnise them as part of her kind, she sees them different
in the very moment she has the chance to
escape the nightmare she was living in, she had almost reached
her goal, she decided to go back
to save her daughter
which wasn't even her real daughter
but an android that in a previous setting acted as her daughter
she decides she can't live her there. She goes back
to embrace her human side
however...
this might be a huge spoiler, because this wasn't told by anyone
it's just a theory of mine
as I stated before, Ford, who's the indiscussed main character of this serie
first of all because Anthony Hopkins is a wonderful actor
who can potray a character through his silences
though pauses and can show
the inner world of a character
which I guess is why everything turns around him
he's perfectly able to handle such a role
the fact is that this is hinted throughout the whole season
and in the end Ford is cornered
by the shareholders of the society that runs the park
they want to force
him to retire
because they want to change the park
they think his stories are a little...
too visionary
it's not what the public wants, they want easier things
where androids are just machines with no doubts about
their ability to understand what they're
going thorugh, so they want them to go back being nothing but
puppets, so that they won't arise
ethical questions, they want a family friendly world
an actual theme park
they're worried because some guests
start to wonder
"do these beings have a conscience?"
"and in that case, is it right what we're doing here?"
the shareholders don't want the guests to ask themselves these questions
because that will lead to questions about the society itself
and they're worried about their income
so they decide to fire Ford
Ford on the other side doesn't like to be told anything
we get to know that this isn't the first time he's put in such a situation
that someone wanted him out of the business
and that eventually he always got what he wanted
and kept his position
because he's the one pulling the strings
and at the end of the season
he gets killed by
Dolores, one of the androids
the first one or one of the first generation
who's portrayed as the most charitable character
the Alice in Wonderland of this serie
who believes in goodness, in justice
in the human soul... he is killed by Dolores and, well, dies.
A few moments before that, though, we've seen him interact with the villain
William, the man in black
and he said something like: "be prepared I've got a new plot for you"
and if on one side you suspect he wanted to emulate Arnold and like he did
made an android kill him, on the other side
I highly suspect he's still pulling thos strings and this is nothing
but another plot
especially since Maeve, who had the chance to escape
she managed to free herself from the condition of slavery
she was in...
decides to go back into play
she doesn't actually run away...
I suspect Ford set this up, faked his own death
which wouldn't be too hard for him, we know
he's perfectly capable of creating androids
I wouldn't see so absurd the fact he
might have created an android with his own appearance
to have it die in his place
and that Ford's real goal was killing
all the shareholders who wanted him out
as he did before. So I feel we'll see him again
in the same role he played in this season
as the man who pulls the strings
and that he did all of this for his majority shareholder
tha man in black, who had worked and played there for ages
because believed there was something greater
a deeper level in the game a labyrinth
which turns out it's not a deeper level
for humans, but was created by
Arnold himself, or, at least, this is what they make us believe
do guide androids
to develope a conscience
and I suspect Ford realised that the man in black
uncovered Arnold's secret and now
needed something else to keep on playing, something he's gonna give him
because I see a kinship between these characters, they're on the same page
so William needed something new to keep on his play
and Ford is giving it to him as he promises on screen
and I feel this new development is more of a challenge between these characters
than an unfortunate series of events
I don't think Ford's death makes all this sense
but we'll see if I'm right and how the serie is gonna develope
I think I've talked quite enough, I'm curious to hear your thoughts
if you've seen the serie, if you didn't...
I invite you to if you didn't do it already when
I told you so at the beginning of this video
if not I don't get why you stayed here and listened to my chatting
I guess I've spoilered the whole season at this point
you don't even need to watch it now
... the soundtrack was beautiful, especially the intro
the opening titles
I... I don't know...
I must have something for the opening titles, I love piano music
and graphics. The photography was beautiful, congrats
to whoever did it.
This was all for today, just know this is not the last time we're talking about sci-fi
if you're interested don't forget to come back from time to time
around here will appear random videos about I don't know what
because I decide the moment I put them here and I'll see you next time!
