We know that civic participation is important to democracy.
After all, without the right to vote and a democratic public sphere,
we would not even have the basic conditions for democracy.
But what does civil participation look like – or what might it look like – today?
With the existence of social networks and other online platforms
that rely on content produced by users,
the so-called Web 2.0,
are we still limited to...
...the common ballot?
When we discuss something that is as important to us as civic participation is,
how can we make use of the technology that we live with daily?
In several ways.
Social networks, online portals and other online tools
function in ways that aretechnologically similar to what e-participatory tools are based on.
But what is e-participation? How can we exercise our democratic rights using electronic tools?
The notion of civic participation in general refers to the ways in which citizens can actively get involved
in making decisions which have an impact on them, which is their democratic right.
The right of citizens to influence decisions involves, of course, the right to vote, but also much more than that.
Citizens can start referendum initiatives...
...engage in public consultations...
...and organize protests.
The European Civic Initiative, a tool for civic initiatives available to all EU citizens
is based on information and communications technology.
Consultations with the interested public are already being implemented through online platforms,
whose way of functioning might be familiar to those who use various social networks.
However, for the development of new tools of electronic democracy
and civic participation using information and communications technology
we would do well to talk to those who use Web 2.0 platforms most skilfully.
Young people.
The lectures were so interesting, i's just that
there was just not enough time. I had a lot more questions to ask
and there were some fantastic pieces of research to hear about, but the time just blew by.
I enjoyed everything, and especially learning about how to do interviews.
I think that this way, we can encourage young people to take part in this rich experience that you can only
fully appreciate later on, not only when you come back home from your travels,
but with time, you realize what skills you have picked up along the way.
It's great that the emphasis was placed so much on the practical part.
Definitely, it was all about creating new digital content, new applications and new ways of communicating with young people,
but also brainstorming on ideas, developing them and gaining respect for each other.
By encouraging young people to develop digital content,
we also encourage them to engage in exploring the democratic possibilities of ICT,
thereby contributing to the emergence of a new generation of interested and active young citizens,
and encouraging them to use their rights and promote the practice of open and responsible decision-making.
I met some great people at this workshop, we spent some great time together
I honestly wouldn't change a thing.
And the lecturers deserve to be mentioned. they were really good.
What would I like to change? The duration, so we can stay tomorrow, too.
We hope there will be more workshops like this. - And that we'll be invited.
We wholeheartedly agree with our colleagues.
E-participation tools can empower young people and encourage their participation in contributing
to the decisions that affect them.
The future of democracy will necessarily include models that go beyond channels of representative democracy
and supplement them with the mechanisms of deliberative democracy and citizens in decision-making.
Information and communications technology will be the means that will really make this shift possible
for both formal stakeholders and interested citizens.
