Bueller? Bueller?

American education is

rife with grand policy proposals that

have turned into bureaucratic fiascos,

from school turnaround to the Common

Core. This is Big 'R' reform. Big 'R'

reform takes the hot idea of the moment,

invests it with grand enthusiasm, and then

tells doubters and skeptics that they

better get on board or get the heck out

of the way. I first saw this stuff up

close a quarter century ago when I was

teaching high school in Baton Rouge,

Louisiana. At the time, the hot new reform

in the state was a teacher evaluation system.

The idea was laudable: Make sure teachers

are doing their jobs well. The solution: a

checklist with a hundred and thirty odd items that administrators

dragged into classrooms. It was nonsense!

Good schools are intensely human places.

They are formed by thousands of good

judgments on the part of teachers that

they make every day. This is why grand

bureaucratic fixes tend not to make a

big difference for schools.

This is the problem with Big 'R' reform,

and it's why there are better ways to

give our kids schools they deserve.

"You Forgot Your Knife In My Car." The Importance of Safe Spaces for LGBTQ Youth. - Duration: 5:32.

Hi, my name is Matt Beierschmitt, I'm from Collinswood, New Jersey.

When I was 15 years old, I was on my family computer talking on AOL chatrooms and just

to meet people and the other guys and, you know, unbeknownst to the rest of my family.

I'm in the male-for-male chat room and I'm talking to this guy and he's - you know, back

in the day, you maybe got one picture from somebody, like it took like 5 minutes for

one picture to upload so you had to take what you can get.

I'm 15.

He's probably in his thirties and no one knows my age - I'm telling them I'm older.

This guy is very eager to meet me and very - just kinda gave me negative vibes but I'm

desperate to meet somebody.

I wanted to just have a connection with somebody.

So I just have a really weird feeling about him, so before I go to meet him, I literally

have to like sneak out of my parents' house.

I take a kitchen knife with me just to be safe.

I thought I would like - it was one of the like 80s wood-handled kitchen knives that

wouldn't cut a carrot but I thought it would kill somebody.

So I took the kitchen knife, go back to my room and I sneak out my first-story window,

hop to the ground, and I walk about a half mile to this river near my parents' house.

Told the guy what I was wearing and he - we agreed on a time to meet and no cellphones,

so you have to tell them, "I'll meet you at this time," and you just go down there

and wait.

So he picks me up and we drive to this, I think one of the parking lots on the river.

And it's dark and, you know, I'm not really into him.

He's not hideous, but just not really into him and, you know, he's into me, and I've

already come all this way.

So I feel obligated to do something so I end up fooling around with the guy.

I was a little nervous but we end up fooling around maybe 10 minutes, and afterwards I

like get out the car immediately and I just start heading home.

I don't know if it was that night or the next night but I'm online again and I get

an email from him saying, "It was nice to meet you.

You seem like a nice guy.

And you forgot your knife in my car."

I was mortified but I didn't really care because I was petrified at the time and glad

I brought it.

So flash forward to a few months later, I am back in South Jersey male-for-male chatting

with people.

I've been chatting with this one guy for a while, one kid for awhile.

I remember his name, screenname was "KegKiller" and I was "BlueSwoosh81", that's my

birthday and Nike was swoosh.

I ended up - we chatted a while and I had a feeling he was legit and real.

The way we chat about stuff, I knew he was my age, lived nearby, and I really wanted

to meet him but he did not want to meet me.

He was very skeptical about it, very scared about it.

He actually dropped where he worked, randomly, in conversation one time.

It was a movie theater, so I asked my friend Liz to go to the movies with me.

It was to go see "Good Will Hunting" and I think it was in '96, '97 at this time

point.

And I knew it was at his movie theater, so I just randomly went there one night to go

see it.

And when I got there, the guy taking my ticket resembled him, he resembled his stats, resembled

his, and I was like okay, that's him, that's him.

So we went to the movie, got inside the movie, and like half-way through the movie I come

back out and I make sure I buy some candy, I make sure I make eye-contact with him, and

make sure that we have some sort of interaction.

Not only talking, but I made sure he saw me.

The next night or the night after, I'm online again, hoping he'll sign on so I can tell

him I went to his work.

He ends up signing on and I end up chatting with him, and I'm like, "Hey, you know,

I went to your work.

I think I saw you.

I was wearing this.

I said hi to you."

And he remembered me and was willing to meet me now.

So we end up meeting like that night or the night after - I can't exactly remember,

but I'm, you know, from then on, we were like instant friends and we had this like, it was

my first gay friend ever I made.

And we had so much in common, he lived right near me, he was in high school, too.

And I had my first gay friend that I could do anything with and we ended up just like

being, going to the city, experiencing everything together for the next 10 years and it was

like something that I didn't know I needed until I had it.

When I found Jeff, I was able to be myself, be honest, just be me.

When I was 15, I had to find people online because in 1996, there wasn't anything else.

I think today, I think it's important to have safe spaces where young queer youth can

go meet other people like them, so they're not putting themselves in these weird predicaments

like I was, meeting a complete stranger, down by the river with a knife.

It's funny now to think about it, but it's also really scary.

I don't want anybody to be in that position.

I think anybody that's young, in the closet, not even in the closet but still needs allies,

they need to find safe spaces near them.

You need people like you, going through the same thing as you so you can make mistakes

with them, learn from their mistakes, and help each other out.

It's important.

The problem of Big 'R' school reform | IN 60 SECONDS - Duration: 1:22.

Bueller? Bueller?

American education is

rife with grand policy proposals that

have turned into bureaucratic fiascos,

from school turnaround to the Common

Core. This is Big 'R' reform. Big 'R'

reform takes the hot idea of the moment,

invests it with grand enthusiasm, and then

tells doubters and skeptics that they

better get on board or get the heck out

of the way. I first saw this stuff up

close a quarter century ago when I was

teaching high school in Baton Rouge,

Louisiana. At the time, the hot new reform

in the state was a teacher evaluation system.

The idea was laudable: Make sure teachers

are doing their jobs well. The solution: a

checklist with a hundred and thirty odd items that administrators

dragged into classrooms. It was nonsense!

Good schools are intensely human places.

They are formed by thousands of good

judgments on the part of teachers that

they make every day. This is why grand

bureaucratic fixes tend not to make a

big difference for schools.

This is the problem with Big 'R' reform,

and it's why there are better ways to

give our kids schools they deserve.

"You Forgot Your Knife In My Car." The Importance of Safe Spaces for LGBTQ Youth. - Duration: 5:32.

Hi, my name is Matt Beierschmitt, I'm from Collinswood, New Jersey.

When I was 15 years old, I was on my family computer talking on AOL chatrooms and just

to meet people and the other guys and, you know, unbeknownst to the rest of my family.

I'm in the male-for-male chat room and I'm talking to this guy and he's - you know, back

in the day, you maybe got one picture from somebody, like it took like 5 minutes for

one picture to upload so you had to take what you can get.

I'm 15.

He's probably in his thirties and no one knows my age - I'm telling them I'm older.

This guy is very eager to meet me and very - just kinda gave me negative vibes but I'm

desperate to meet somebody.

I wanted to just have a connection with somebody.

So I just have a really weird feeling about him, so before I go to meet him, I literally

have to like sneak out of my parents' house.

I take a kitchen knife with me just to be safe.

I thought I would like - it was one of the like 80s wood-handled kitchen knives that

wouldn't cut a carrot but I thought it would kill somebody.

So I took the kitchen knife, go back to my room and I sneak out my first-story window,

hop to the ground, and I walk about a half mile to this river near my parents' house.

Told the guy what I was wearing and he - we agreed on a time to meet and no cellphones,

so you have to tell them, "I'll meet you at this time," and you just go down there

and wait.

So he picks me up and we drive to this, I think one of the parking lots on the river.

And it's dark and, you know, I'm not really into him.

He's not hideous, but just not really into him and, you know, he's into me, and I've

already come all this way.

So I feel obligated to do something so I end up fooling around with the guy.

I was a little nervous but we end up fooling around maybe 10 minutes, and afterwards I

like get out the car immediately and I just start heading home.

I don't know if it was that night or the next night but I'm online again and I get

an email from him saying, "It was nice to meet you.

You seem like a nice guy.

And you forgot your knife in my car."

I was mortified but I didn't really care because I was petrified at the time and glad

I brought it.

So flash forward to a few months later, I am back in South Jersey male-for-male chatting

with people.

I've been chatting with this one guy for a while, one kid for awhile.

I remember his name, screenname was "KegKiller" and I was "BlueSwoosh81", that's my

birthday and Nike was swoosh.

I ended up - we chatted a while and I had a feeling he was legit and real.

The way we chat about stuff, I knew he was my age, lived nearby, and I really wanted

to meet him but he did not want to meet me.

He was very skeptical about it, very scared about it.

He actually dropped where he worked, randomly, in conversation one time.

It was a movie theater, so I asked my friend Liz to go to the movies with me.

It was to go see "Good Will Hunting" and I think it was in '96, '97 at this time

point.

And I knew it was at his movie theater, so I just randomly went there one night to go

see it.

And when I got there, the guy taking my ticket resembled him, he resembled his stats, resembled

his, and I was like okay, that's him, that's him.

So we went to the movie, got inside the movie, and like half-way through the movie I come

back out and I make sure I buy some candy, I make sure I make eye-contact with him, and

make sure that we have some sort of interaction.

Not only talking, but I made sure he saw me.

The next night or the night after, I'm online again, hoping he'll sign on so I can tell

him I went to his work.

He ends up signing on and I end up chatting with him, and I'm like, "Hey, you know,

I went to your work.

I think I saw you.

I was wearing this.

I said hi to you."

And he remembered me and was willing to meet me now.

So we end up meeting like that night or the night after - I can't exactly remember,

but I'm, you know, from then on, we were like instant friends and we had this like, it was

my first gay friend ever I made.

And we had so much in common, he lived right near me, he was in high school, too.

And I had my first gay friend that I could do anything with and we ended up just like

being, going to the city, experiencing everything together for the next 10 years and it was

like something that I didn't know I needed until I had it.

When I found Jeff, I was able to be myself, be honest, just be me.

When I was 15, I had to find people online because in 1996, there wasn't anything else.

I think today, I think it's important to have safe spaces where young queer youth can

go meet other people like them, so they're not putting themselves in these weird predicaments

like I was, meeting a complete stranger, down by the river with a knife.

It's funny now to think about it, but it's also really scary.

I don't want anybody to be in that position.

I think anybody that's young, in the closet, not even in the closet but still needs allies,

they need to find safe spaces near them.

You need people like you, going through the same thing as you so you can make mistakes

with them, learn from their mistakes, and help each other out.

It's important.

Alien Life and Intelligence Exists Beyond Our Solar System in Forms We Can�t Conceive

An Interview With Britain's Top Astronomer WATCH Today's Galaxy Stream

"Aliens could exist in forms we can't conceive," says Martin Rees is Emeritus Professor of

Cosmology and Astrophysics, at the University of Cambridge, the Astronomer Royal, a member

of Britain�s House of Lords, and a former President of the Royal Society.

"They could be staring us in the face and we just don�t recognize them.

The problem is that we�re looking for something very much like us, assuming that they at least

have something like the same mathematics and technology."

�I suspect there could be life and intelligence out there in forms we can�t conceive.

Just as a chimpanzee can�t understand quantum theory, it could be there as aspects of reality

that are beyond the capacity of our brains.�

An in-depth interview with Rees was conducted at Trinity College, Cambridge, by The Conversation�s

Matt Warren that covered a wide range of subjects including, the size of the universe and the

probability of machine intelligence.

The following is his reply to existence of advanced alien life in the cosmos.

We know now that planets exist around many, even most, stars.

We know that in our Milky Way galaxy there are likely millions of planets that are in

many ways like the Earth, with liquid water.

The question then is whether life has developed on them � and we can�t yet answer that.

Although we know how via Darwinian selection a complex biosphere evolved on Earth around

4 billion years ago, we don�t yet understand the actual origin of life � the transition

from complex chemistry to the first metabolizing, replicating structures.

The good news is that we will have a better idea of how that happened within the next

ten or 20 years and crucially, how likely it was to happen.

This will give us a better understanding of how likely it is to happen elsewhere.

In that time, we will also have technologies that will allow us to better search for alien

life.

But just because there�s life elsewhere doesn�t mean that there is intelligent life.

My guess is that if we do detect an alien intelligence, it will be nothing like us.

It will be some sort of electronic entity.

If we look at our history on Earth, it has taken about 4 billion years to get from the

first protozoa to our current, technological civilisation.

But if we look into the future, then it�s quite likely that within a few centuries,

machines will have taken over � and they will then have billions of years ahead of

them.

In other words, the period of time occupied by organic intelligence is just a thin sliver

between early life and the long era of the machines.

Because such civilisations would develop at different rates, it�s extremely unlikely

that we will find intelligent life at the same stage of development as us.

More likely, that life will still be either far simpler, or an already fully electronic

intelligence.

The problem of Big 'R' school reform | IN 60 SECONDS - Duration: 1:22.

Bueller? Bueller?

American education is

rife with grand policy proposals that

have turned into bureaucratic fiascos,

from school turnaround to the Common

Core. This is Big 'R' reform. Big 'R'

reform takes the hot idea of the moment,

invests it with grand enthusiasm, and then

tells doubters and skeptics that they

better get on board or get the heck out

of the way. I first saw this stuff up

close a quarter century ago when I was

teaching high school in Baton Rouge,

Louisiana. At the time, the hot new reform

in the state was a teacher evaluation system.

The idea was laudable: Make sure teachers

are doing their jobs well. The solution: a

checklist with a hundred and thirty odd items that administrators

dragged into classrooms. It was nonsense!

Good schools are intensely human places.

They are formed by thousands of good

judgments on the part of teachers that

they make every day. This is why grand

bureaucratic fixes tend not to make a

big difference for schools.

This is the problem with Big 'R' reform,

and it's why there are better ways to

give our kids schools they deserve.

Why Drake uses a Jamaican accent - Duration: 2:39.

If you've been keeping up with Drake's last few albums, you probably noticed a recurring

Jamaican theme.

There's the implicit homage in some beats.

And then there's Drake's use of patois.

For a guy whose style goes from here

to here

he's had mixed luck crafting a character that can pull off this dialect.

So, how does a kid with an American father and European-Jewish mother end up with valid

links to Jamaican dancehall?

You can thank Toronto for that.

It's where Drake grew up.

And it's a fact he loves to shout from the rooftops.

The city is known for its multiracial identity – and it shows up in Drake's music, his

life, and also in the data.

In 'Still Here' Drake asks 'How did I finesse all this shit from Jane and Weston?'

That intersection, Jane Street and Weston Road, is on the outskirts of an enclave of

Jamaican-Canadians.

It's on the west side of the city, where Drake grew up... until he moved to a wealthier

section in the center of the city, in the 6th grad.

On the Eastern side of the city, you can see another concentration of Jamaican neighborhoods,

around Scarborough.

That's the filming location for Drake's pop culture debut on Degrassi.

He references it in Worst Behavior.

This ain't the son you raised who used to take the Acura at 5am then go and shoot Degrassi

up on Morningside.

So in 2001 about 71% of Canada's Jamaican population lived in Toronto.

And Drake has really been playing up his connection to that identity in his music lately.

Take that track at the top of this video; it was produced by Boi-1da, who was born in

Kingston, Jamaica, but raised in Toronto.

That migration is pretty common in Ontario.

The province has by far been the most popular destination for Caribbean-Canadian immigrants

since the 1960s.

Granted, only 3% of Toronto citizens are Jamaican.

So people on the internet are having this conversation about whether all of this is

authentic, or if Drake is taking advantage of some convenient cultural cachet.

But when you hear Drake breaking into this accent, know that it's because he just wants

you to see him as a young guy from Toronto.

Even if he lives in LA now.

until you told me that you can even shop

around for different interest rates for

banks or credit cards you know I mean

and things like that

credit score to do that

get a good credit score and make

sure you pay everybody back eh

get all kinds of good deals on front

banks and everything and they'll go out of their way

to loan you money but if all the sudden

you end up in the hole and you're not

paying everybody back I thinkin you gonna

get away with something guess what and

nobody's gonna loan you nothing

anything that you buy the rest of your

life is gonna be high price everything

you everything you touch it will be high price

right so you gonna be down a slippery

slope because they raised the interest

rates they gonna raise the interest rates on everything

because you are high-risk and/or

eventually become unbankable and you can

you excuse me have a bank you can even

have a bank so
