I was reading recently about Black Wall Street, an area in Tulsa, Oklahoma which was home
to successful black businessmen and was burned down, its black residents rounded up, by a
white mob in 1921.
At that time, the neighborhood was one of the richest in the country, and it seems like
the whites living around it weren't happy about that.
According to what I've read, riots started when a black man tripped and reached out to
stop his fall, accidentally touching a white woman and causing the initial furor, and when
that black man returned to his neighborhood his neighborhood refused to hand him over
to the white officials who wanted him arrested.
Growing up and attending school in the United States, I was never taught this, despite the
magnitude of this riot, caused by white people.
I was taught a bit about racial conflict during the Civil Rights era in the 1960s, where the
people portrayed as causing the disturbance were black, but not when the people causing
the mass disturbance were white.
Similarly, I learned about the Spanish-American War in elementary school but in a way where
the United States was portrayed as heroic.
I was not, in elementary school, taught about how we didn't rescue Cuba, how Cuba had been
fighting for its independence for about thirty years before the United States became involved.
I was not taught about how the United States turned the lands it acquired from Spain during
the Spanish-American War into its colonies, and that that was the motivation for entering
the conflict, because it wanted an empire like European countries had empires, and it
wanted to build bases on these islands so it could more easily control the oceans.
I was not taught that.
I was taught that the United States was a country of freedom.
I was taught that we valued freedom so much we fought and died for it.
I was taught that we brought freedom to countries.
It was not until college that I had the opportunity to get the full story, which makes the United
States look like a place that has only ever cared about freedom for white people domestically
and that has not cared for the freedom of people across the globe if they were not white
and European.
But things like the burning of Black Wall Street and the true story of the Spanish-American
War need to be taught in our elementary and high schools.
We cannot portray our country as being better than it has been, especially when we portray
other countries with every flaw they have.
Because if we don't teach what actually happened, we are not only liars, we are cowards.
We are afraid of our history because we don't like what we see.
So we ignore it, and hope other generations will also ignore it.
If we continue to do this, our national anthem has no right to call this place the home of
the brave.
