[IT/EN-sub] How to understand and speak German without knowing every word - Duration: 7:30.

Goodmorning and welcome back to my channel

I'm Lexi and today we're going to talk about the German language

German that is usually considered to be

hard, or at least one of the hardest

from those who try to learn it

though we know there are way harder languages

however, when we usually start with German and we see the cases

we get scared: help! What's this thing?! How do I conjugate it?

How do I do this?

But, as I said, it has hard but also partst

that are nicer and also easy

Today I'd like to give you a tip

to help you deal with this fear of German

meaning that German has a peculiarity: it seems hard

but I think is very easy to understand

As I said in another video, many words

are compounds and you just need

to know the two parts to understand the compound

I made an example with verbs

I used schauen, that means look

there's zuschauen, anschauen, wiederschauen

these particles at the beginning of the word

give it a slightly different meaning, but the verb is still schauen

they're all different ways of looking, the particle just tell you in which way but the action is always looking

another thing I find very interesting

the exit

is called "ausgang" for pedestrians and "ausfahrt" for cars.

so a pedestrian exit is an Ausgang

because gehen means walk

so you move with your feet, whilst fahren

is the action of going with a car

so Ausgang means you exit by walking

and Ausfahrt tells you to exit by car

I think this is the core of German mentality

this extreme practicality that's so integrated

with their culture it shows in the language

it's part of it

and you see this logic anywhere

like the exit is called Ausfahrt

the entrance is Einfahrt

or Eingang for pedestrians

when you go to a shop and you'd like to try on something

you ask if you can "anprobieren" it

problieren an, literally: try on

German do this so frequently

that when I was teaching in a primary school kids were given

homeworks where they had to build words

from words they knew already

and you saw them wondering: how can I create a word?

and they took, for example: book

pictures

and came out with Bilderbuch

a picture book, those for children

and this really works in many cases

if you don't know a word, just take a couple you already know, unite them

and it's likely that even that is not an actual word

Germans are so used to see these compounds that

don't even realise that's not a word

they get the meaning

and that's enough for them, because eventually what matters is understanding each other, isn't it?

This is done so frequently there are actually a few rules about

compounds. There are 2 main ways

you either use a dash

or something else in between

like a s, e, en, ens, er

to build a compound. I'll give you some examples

I've already written them down, because if I think while I do things

I tend to forget something important, so

I've written down some words. Let's say kindergarden

or in German: Kindergarten

Kinder + Garten

to be honest the two words is formed of are Kind and Garten

but it turns out as Kindergarten

the reason we have these words in the middle, in this case the ER

of KindER sometimes have grammatical reasons

a Kindergarten is a "Garten für Kinder"

so Kinder is already in the original word

and is simply associated

so know that the main word, that where all is coming from is Kind

so "the child"

Another example might be Herzenslust

which comes from Lust des Herzens

and so it becomes Herzenslust

and not Herzlust

sometimes though, they don't make this much sense

and this letter in between is used just to easen pronounciation

because as we know German is complicated enough

and even Germans have issues sometimes, so they

solve it by adding a small letter

as we do in Italian in other cases

and this is why Regierung + Kommission becomes Regierungskommission

with an S in between.

Other time you'd use dashes, for example a flat with

3 rooms is a 3-Zimmer-Wohnung

this game of uniting words is done with names

so it might be a name + a name

for example die Sonne + der Schein

that becomes der Sonnenschein

or der Mond + der Schein = der Mondschein

the moonlight.

This thing can be done with an adjective plus a name

for example kurz + Meldung = Kurzmeldung

another thing might be... let me think... xD let me thing that I have it written down here!

A verb plus an adjective

so for example the verb "warten" = wait

+ Zimmer = Wartezimmer, the room where you wait, the waitingroom

or might be done with a preposition + a name, for example

neben = near

and "die Kosten" which is a plural

meaning "the costs"

which becomes "die Nebenkosten", the other costs, for example

when you rent a flat you might have some extra costs that are called "Nebenkosten".

Another important thing to remember is that when you do this

and put 2 word together, the article...

for example one word is feminine, the other is masculine

and you might say: "OMG! What should I use?!"

the right article is the one of the second term, so in this case

Kindergarten: is DAS Kind, DER Garten

and the article is DER, so it becomes DER Kindergarten

the second word, Garten, is the one that gives the article to the whole word.

I think I've said all what I had to say

I don't want to add too much

but I really believe this is a good trick to help you feel

a little more free to speak German

and to understand it

it might help being a little braver

in facing the language

for you might get half of the word and know that the other half might be a preposition

something that better specifies what's going on

but you don't need it to get the general meaning

because you already got it right.

I hate men.

I hate society.

They make me feel like a doll
