Youtube daily report w Feb 15 2017

Today I will show

you the Review of my 3 oil soap

I'm keeping the soap in plastic boxes like this

because here I have air conditioning and

I do not like to take dust

so it's a way of keeping the

soaps and laundry soaps also

then I'll show you what I did...

I wrapped soaps with plastic wrap

and put them all here

Now I'll unwrap to see how they are

It is very good, look at its color

It is very soft ...

smooth, not oily ...

I'll cut a piece

just so you can see the consistency

... it's not hard, it's very good

It looks like a cheese ....

still needs about 10 days to complete one month

But I wanted to show you now how it is getting ...

I'm going to test with this piece

I will wash my hands

look how wonderful this soap is ...

What a great foam

It was worth it because it is very soft

It smells coconut because I used

coconut oil, olive oil ...

In addition to cleaning, because the coconut oil

of our Lego City

Thai Food at Tha Kha Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำท่าคา) - Don't Miss Aunty's Fried Oyster Omelet! - Duration: 18:09.

Good morning everyone, it's Mark Wiens

with Migrationology.com in Bangkok, Thailand.

There are many different floating markets

that you can visit when you come to Bangkok,

and there are a couple right within Bangkok,

I really recommend Khlong Lat Mayom, by the way,

and then there are also some really famous floating markets

about an hour and a 1/2 outside of Bangkok,

in a province called Samut Songkhram,

and some of the really famous floating markets

like Damnoen Saduak, and Amphawa floating markets

are all located there.

But today, my wife and my sister and my mom,

and our kids, a couple of our kids,

we are gonna go on a day trip to Samut Songkhram,

and hopefully go to a couple of kinda more lesser known

floating markets, so stay tuned for this video,

some lesser known floating markets and some delicious food

coming up.

According to Google Maps, it's 86 kilometers

from where we're leaving, and we're in the Bangna area

of Bangkok, and it's gonna take an hour and 36 minutes

to drive there.

(cheerful instrumental music)

You know when you're in the countryside

when the dog just lounges in the middle of the road

and you have to go around him.

We are following Google Maps, and we're now

on this small little jungle road, and I'm loving it.

Oh, this is such a beautiful province,

I love being around these areas.

Achoo!

We made it, this market is called Talat Nam Tha Kha,

and the literal translation, talat is market

and then nam is water, so it's a water market,

and I'm already loving the simple,

kinda slow feel of this market.

When you arrive to this market, you walk through

this little entrance section which is covered,

and there's some souvenir shops, and then immediately,

you get to the floating market section,

it has such a quiet, peaceful, nice feel to it,

there are plenty of boat vendors,

some of which are selling ready-to-eat things,

and then some people who are selling

a variety of different ingredients, lots of bananas,

some onions and some garlic and shallots,

and then produce from their gardens,

probably right from their gardens right at home,

and they just load everything up onto their boat

and then come to the market to sell.

But what I really like is how small,

and how friendly it is so far, and I just,

actually, I haven't really walked around much yet,

but I just came into the market,

walked up this little bridge so I can just

kinda get a birds' eye view of Tha Kha floating market.

So far, the ladies selling things at this market

are all very friendly, and they all wanna see Mika.

Looks like they're buying something here.

- Popiah! - Popiah.

My sister Anyin just got some fresh spring rolls,

and they are really hot and fresh, fried fresh.

Mm!

Oh yeah!

Filled with mung mee noodles, and maybe carrots.

Mm, they're good.

Nice and hot still.

(baby wailing)

As you're walking along the edge of the water on the market,

they have these coconuts set up

where you can massage your feet.

Kinda go like this, it kinda hurts!

Am I doing it, (speaks in foreign language).

It's coconut sugar.

(woman speaking in foreign language)

You can smell it, you can smell it.

- [Anyin] It's supposed to be better, so I use that

instead of regular sugar.

- There's a lot of good produce at this market,

and also, you can buy fresh coconut sugar,

and coconut syrup, and lots and lots of bananas

and coconuts.

Hoy tod.

Yeah.

I am squatting down here on a floating raft,

and I just ordered something called hoy tod,

which is fried oysters with egg,

and this is a beautiful stall,

it is an amazing grandmother who is cooking up,

and she is using charcoal on a hot plate,

and adding in the batter, the oysters, and then egg.

Oh, and it's just going up in a cloud of beautiful smoke.

My plate of hoy tod is coming along,

and she just added the egg, and I love,

she cracked on the egg, and then she chucks the eggshell

into the bucket of eggshells, expertly.

Oh, that's a beautiful thing.

Oh, I think that's some lard going in.

There are bean sprouts in it, there's egg,

there's the rice flour batter, as well as oysters,

I asked her, they are oysters,

and then also bean sprouts and cilantro,

and then after it was finished,

she dished it onto a plate, added some cilantro

and then some pepper.

And I'm sitting down here with my mom to eat.

Oh yeah.

It's good.

Oh, the fresh, crisp bean sprouts, the oyster in there,

and then like the gooey batter flour.

As we were sitting eating that oyster omelet,

I could smell the smoke coming down the canal

from the grilling skewers of gai ping and maybe moo ping,

I'm not sure, I think she mostly has chicken,

but that sounds delicious right now,

grilled meat on skewer.

Okay, how many skewers would you like, ma?

- [Mom] One or two.

(woman speaking in foreign language)

- [Mom] Sticky rice.

(Mark speaking in foreign language)

- We got a full baggy of grilled chicken, and also tab,

which is liver, and liver's one of my favorites.

Oh yeah.

So creamy, and then it has a marinade on it,

so it's a little bit sweet and a little bit salty

at the same time, but with a really good,

smoky flavor to it.

(cheerful instrumental music)

Oh, thank you!

I stopped to buy some starfruit,

starfruit is an excellent fruit,

not only does it look cool, but it tastes incredibly good,

so every opportunity I have for starfruit, I go for it.

Mm!

It is so juicy!

Oh, that's just an entire mouthful of starfruit juice.

Oh, that's delicious, and it's sweet and sour.

The next snack that we got is called toong tong,

and the literal translation is a golden little bag,

or little pocket pouch, and it's a little wrapper,

which is wrapped really nicely,

and I think they had a minced pork version as well,

but we got the one filled with corn and then deep-fried,

and this is a little one-bite little gift,

and you can see on the top, on the top it's very crispy,

and then on the bottom is the pouch

where it's wrapped up with the filling.

Mm!

Oh yeah.

That's like a spring roll in different shape.

That's fantastic.

Oh, that is tasty.

- Surprisingly good!

- [Mark] It's more tasty than I thought it was gonna be.

- Yeah, that's what I'm saying, like it was really good!

- Ying is having a bowl of kway chap nankon,

which are the rice noodle rolls,

in like a braised soup, and I'm having just ba mee,

which are the egg noodles, with pork,

and there's some pork meatballs, I think in there,

and also some daikon, I think it's daikon radish,

which is also within the soup broth.

Let me get a bite with some pork and with some noodles,

there are also a lot of bean sprouts in here as well.

Mm!

Some good black pepper in there, or maybe white pepper,

but that's just a simple, classic bowl of Thai noodles.

I'm watching them make something

which is called khao tom mad, which is rice,

sticky rice mixed in a mixture,

I think with coconut milk, and then

they add in a banana and wrap it in a banana leaf,

and then it's steamed, and it's a very popular Thai snack,

but she was telling me that it's a bolan version,

it's a traditional version.

Very cool to watch them make it.

Oh, okay.

So this is the sticky rice mixture

that includes sugar and coconut milk.

(speaking in foreign language)

They are making the khao tom mad

over a little bit down there, overlooking the canal,

and then they're selling them right here,

so I just got some of the khao tom mad

that they're making freshly right now.

They're wrapped in doubles, and you unravel that,

and then you got two banana leaf-wrapped packets.

Oh, and you can feel that stickiness already

from that coconut milk and that sugar in there.

Oh, and what I love about things

that are cooked in banana leaf

is you can immediately smell the aroma,

that banana leaf, it has such a wonderful aroma.

The sticky rice just sorta melts

into that coconut milk and the banana.

Really gooey, sticky rice, and then just

with a sweet and tart banana on the inside.

This is one of my favorite Thai traditional desserts.

You can really taste that banana leaf,

which the steam embedded into it.

We spent about two hours walking around this market

and eating and relaxing, this is a fantastic

little floating market, and I love how it's so quiet

and peaceful and very, very friendly.

They also offer boat rides, which would look really,

really nice, but with the babies,

I think we're gonna skip the boat ride,

although if you come here, I think I would highly recommend

the opportunity to take a boat through these canals

and just relax, that looks really fun.

And from here, we're gonna go see another floating market,

which is not too far away.

Yeah, there's another floating market about,

it said about 15 minutes away that I wanna check out,

so we'll just stop by there for a little bit

and see how it is.

That was an absolutely beautiful drive

through the coconut trees to get here,

and that was about a 15 minute drive,

and this is called Talat Nam Bang Noi,

and it is right on the edge of the Mekong River,

I can see it right up here.

(jazzy folk music) Oh man, at first I thought

that was a CD playing, that's a live band!

Fantastic!

I gotta give it up to the live music,

that is a highlight of visiting this market.

This is a really relaxed floating market as well,

but it's right along the Mekong River,

which is a huge river, and then kind of

right in the parking lot on the side of the temple,

so it's almost like a community,

it almost has a community center feel to it.

The girls and the babies are walking around

the market shopping.

This is a good shopping market,

especially for little Thai things and souvenirs,

and so I have taken this opportunity to sit on the bench

near the water and eat some mulberries,

and mulberries are, I think they're popular

to eat at this market, they're kinda famous

to eat at this market, and I like how

she has made a mulberry, a little basket

to hold the mulberries in, and then

put the mulberries inside, and then she put it

in a plastic bag, too.

Oh yeah!

Mm!

Oh, that gives you an immediately burst of sourness,

before any sweetness.

Mm!

Those are really good.

We're walking around the market,

and we came back to the car to feed Mika,

and also, we're eating some snacks, so I'm gonna try.

This one is khanom gluay, it's a banana

grilled in a banana leaf, long and skinny.

Let me break it in half, oh, very sticky.

Loo at that, oh, it's hot, right off the grill.

Mm!

Yeah, it's really good.

It's nice, you can taste the banana like,

tastes like a dried banana with coconut,

and then it has like a, it's almost like caramelized

on the outside.

Oh, Mika!

What I really enjoyed today was visiting

Talat Nam Tha Kha, that was the highlight of today.

It's about an hour and a 1/2 outside of central Bangkok,

and it's definitely worth the trip,

that's one of the best floating markets in Thailand

that I've been to, I just enjoyed the whole atmosphere

of the market, and then we just kinda stopped here

just because we were in the area,

and those mulberries were delicious.

I'm gonna end this video now, it's been a,

yeah, just a great Bangkok day trip,

and good to get out of Bangkok for a little bit,

and I really love this Samut Songkhram Province

in Thailand, and the relaxing markets,

and the whole feel of the entire province,

this entire area.

Korea's small bookstores make a comeback - Duration: 4:47.

Korea's independent bookstores, or "chaekbang," have struggled under the weight of competition

with mega chain bookstores, the growth of online shops and the popularity of electronic

books.

It may have seemed inevitable that they would vanish into oblivion, but they're slowly making

a comeback, as our Kim Jung-soo shows us in our news feature tonight.

Starting in the early 2000s, the Korean government enacted a controversial series of fixed-price

policies for bookstores nationwide, banning aggressive discounts by mega chain bookstores,

with the hope of breathing new life into Korea's independent bookstores, or "chaekbang," to

restore balance to the entire cultural ecosystem.

While the number of bookstore chains stayed virtually the same in the decade from 2005

to 2015, the total number of bookstores nationwide fell from about two-thousand in 2005 to just

over 15-hundred by 2015, which was a near 25-percent drop.

But price competitiveness wasn't the only reason for the decline.

"While the smaller chaekbang continued to sell workbooks or paperbacks, Korea's chain

bookstores slowly started reinventing themselves as entertainment complexes for all five senses."

The makeover has caused an important change in public buying trends.

According to a survey by Korea's culture ministry in 2015,

nearly 60 percent of adults said they preferred to get their books from chains or e-book stores,...

while only 12-point-5 percent said they preferred smaller, independent bookstores

But that doesn't mean the chaekbang aren't also trying out new things.

"These bookstores aren't just outdated relics of the past.

They're reinventing themselves to offer both a cultural and communal experience."

This bookstore in Yeongdeungpo-gu District looks rather unassuming from the outside,

but as the saying goes, it would be unwise to judge a book by its cover.

Once inside, the customer is struck by a strong and pleasant aroma that's a mixture of the

perfumes on sale inside.

The scents are mixed and manufactured by the shop owner himself, who majored in chemistry

and once worked for a perfume company.

"Mega-bookstores have been problematic for small shop owners, but I think the local stores

are also to blame, as they have also been too slow to adapt to changing trends.

That's why I came up with this idea."

Alongside some perennial classics of Korean literature, the store showcases perfume that

the owner was inspired to make while reading and a display of the books that inspired him.

The books come wrapped in plain gift paper with keywords written on the front like clues

to a mystery,... adding a new layer to the experience of interacting with a book.

"I came here to find a Valentine's Day gift for my mother.

There's great synergy in combining books with perfume.

I believe the scents actually help me concentrate on my reading as well."

And not far away, close to one of Seoul's busiest subway stations in Hongdae, another

bookstore has reinvented itself as a shelter for tired passengers....

"I wanted my store to help lighten the burden on travelers in two ways: first, people need

good information about places to visit, and second, they always need a convenient place

to store their heavy luggage while in transit."

The store also encourages readers to design and publish their own travel stories.

It has a mini publication studio, and organizes periodic meetings between readers and travel

writers.

"From the beginning, I've never thought that I was really competing against the mega-bookstores.

With a smaller shop like this, I can make individual recommendations about good travel

books and become quite close to readers."

Ultimately, the owner says he hopes that people can rediscover the meaning of travel and share

their definitions, which is what experts hope can happen with bookstores as well.

"Once you visit a small bookstore, you become part of that special community.

The small stores are no longer invisible per-se, but actively and physically connect readers

with the specific content or themes that the books convey."

Although it is obvious that bookstores will never actually stop the growing demand for

digital data, it seems they've found a different purpose which is just as meaningful -- providing

people with crucial opportunities for human contact and interpersonal connections.

Good morning everyone, it's Mark Wiens

with Migrationology.com in Bangkok, Thailand.

There are many different floating markets

that you can visit when you come to Bangkok,

and there are a couple right within Bangkok,

I really recommend Khlong Lat Mayom, by the way,

and then there are also some really famous floating markets

about an hour and a 1/2 outside of Bangkok,

in a province called Samut Songkhram,

and some of the really famous floating markets

like Damnoen Saduak, and Amphawa floating markets

are all located there.

But today, my wife and my sister and my mom,

and our kids, a couple of our kids,

we are gonna go on a day trip to Samut Songkhram,

and hopefully go to a couple of kinda more lesser known

floating markets, so stay tuned for this video,

some lesser known floating markets and some delicious food

coming up.

According to Google Maps, it's 86 kilometers

from where we're leaving, and we're in the Bangna area

of Bangkok, and it's gonna take an hour and 36 minutes

to drive there.

(cheerful instrumental music)

You know when you're in the countryside

when the dog just lounges in the middle of the road

and you have to go around him.

We are following Google Maps, and we're now

on this small little jungle road, and I'm loving it.

Oh, this is such a beautiful province,

I love being around these areas.

Achoo!

We made it, this market is called Talat Nam Tha Kha,

and the literal translation, talat is market

and then nam is water, so it's a water market,

and I'm already loving the simple,

kinda slow feel of this market.

When you arrive to this market, you walk through

this little entrance section which is covered,

and there's some souvenir shops, and then immediately,

you get to the floating market section,

it has such a quiet, peaceful, nice feel to it,

there are plenty of boat vendors,

some of which are selling ready-to-eat things,

and then some people who are selling

a variety of different ingredients, lots of bananas,

some onions and some garlic and shallots,

and then produce from their gardens,

probably right from their gardens right at home,

and they just load everything up onto their boat

and then come to the market to sell.

But what I really like is how small,

and how friendly it is so far, and I just,

actually, I haven't really walked around much yet,

but I just came into the market,

walked up this little bridge so I can just

kinda get a birds' eye view of Tha Kha floating market.

So far, the ladies selling things at this market

are all very friendly, and they all wanna see Mika.

Looks like they're buying something here.

- Popiah! - Popiah.

My sister Anyin just got some fresh spring rolls,

and they are really hot and fresh, fried fresh.

Mm!

Oh yeah!

Filled with mung mee noodles, and maybe carrots.

Mm, they're good.

Nice and hot still.

(baby wailing)

As you're walking along the edge of the water on the market,

they have these coconuts set up

where you can massage your feet.

Kinda go like this, it kinda hurts!

Am I doing it, (speaks in foreign language).

It's coconut sugar.

You can smell it, you can smell it.

- [Anyin] It's supposed to be better, so I use that

instead of regular sugar.

- There's a lot of good produce at this market,

and also, you can buy fresh coconut sugar,

and coconut syrup, and lots and lots of bananas

and coconuts.

Hoy tod.

Yeah.

I am squatting down here on a floating raft,

and I just ordered something called hoy tod,

which is fried oysters with egg,

and this is a beautiful stall,

it is an amazing grandmother who is cooking up,

and she is using charcoal on a hot plate,

and adding in the batter, the oysters, and then egg.

Oh, and it's just going up in a cloud of beautiful smoke.

My plate of hoy tod is coming along,

and she just added the egg, and I love,

she cracked on the egg, and then she chucks the eggshell

into the bucket of eggshells, expertly.

Oh, that's a beautiful thing.

Oh, I think that's some lard going in.

There are bean sprouts in it, there's egg,

there's the rice flour batter, as well as oysters,

I asked her, they are oysters,

and then also bean sprouts and cilantro,

and then after it was finished,

she dished it onto a plate, added some cilantro

and then some pepper.

And I'm sitting down here with my mom to eat.

Oh yeah.

It's good.

Oh, the fresh, crisp bean sprouts, the oyster in there,

and then like the gooey batter flour.

As we were sitting eating that oyster omelet,

I could smell the smoke coming down the canal

from the grilling skewers of gai ping and maybe moo ping,

I'm not sure, I think she mostly has chicken,

but that sounds delicious right now,

grilled meat on skewer.

Okay, how many skewers would you like, ma?

- [Mom] One or two.

(woman speaking in foreign language)

- [Mom] Sticky rice.

(Mark speaking in foreign language)

- We got a full baggy of grilled chicken, and also tab,

which is liver, and liver's one of my favorites.

Oh yeah.

So creamy, and then it has a marinade on it,

so it's a little bit sweet and a little bit salty

at the same time, but with a really good,

smoky flavor to it.

(cheerful instrumental music)

Oh, thank you!

I stopped to buy some starfruit,

starfruit is an excellent fruit,

not only does it look cool, but it tastes incredibly good,

so every opportunity I have for starfruit, I go for it.

Mm!

It is so juicy!

Oh, that's just an entire mouthful of starfruit juice.

Oh, that's delicious, and it's sweet and sour.

The next snack that we got is called toong tong,

and the literal translation is a golden little bag,

or little pocket pouch, and it's a little wrapper,

which is wrapped really nicely,

and I think they had a minced pork version as well,

but we got the one filled with corn and then deep-fried,

and this is a little one-bite little gift,

and you can see on the top, on the top it's very crispy,

and then on the bottom is the pouch

where it's wrapped up with the filling.

Mm!

Oh yeah.

That's like a spring roll in different shape.

That's fantastic.

Oh, that is tasty.

- Surprisingly good!

- [Mark] It's more tasty than I thought it was gonna be.

- Yeah, that's what I'm saying, like it was really good!

- Ying is having a bowl of kway chap nankon,

which are the rice noodle rolls,

in like a braised soup, and I'm having just ba mee,

which are the egg noodles, with pork,

and there's some pork meatballs, I think in there,

and also some daikon, I think it's daikon radish,

which is also within the soup broth.

Let me get a bite with some pork and with some noodles,

there are also a lot of bean sprouts in here as well.

Mm!

Some good black pepper in there, or maybe white pepper,

but that's just a simple, classic bowl of Thai noodles.

I'm watching them make something

which is called khao tom mad, which is rice,

sticky rice mixed in a mixture,

I think with coconut milk, and then

they add in a banana and wrap it in a banana leaf,

and then it's steamed, and it's a very popular Thai snack,

but she was telling me that it's a bolan version,

it's a traditional version.

Very cool to watch them make it.

Oh, okay.

So this is the sticky rice mixture

that includes sugar and coconut milk.

(speaking in foreign language)

They are making the khao tom mad

over a little bit down there, overlooking the canal,

and then they're selling them right here,

so I just got some of the khao tom mad

that they're making freshly right now.

They're wrapped in doubles, and you unravel that,

and then you got two banana leaf-wrapped packets.

Oh, and you can feel that stickiness already

from that coconut milk and that sugar in there.

Oh, and what I love about things

that are cooked in banana leaf

is you can immediately smell the aroma,

that banana leaf, it has such a wonderful aroma.

The sticky rice just sorta melts

into that coconut milk and the banana.

Really gooey, sticky rice, and then just

with a sweet and tart banana on the inside.

This is one of my favorite Thai traditional desserts.

You can really taste that banana leaf,

which the steam embedded into it.

We spent about two hours walking around this market

and eating and relaxing, this is a fantastic

little floating market, and I love how it's so quiet

and peaceful and very, very friendly.

They also offer boat rides, which would look really,

really nice, but with the babies,

I think we're gonna skip the boat ride,

although if you come here, I think I would highly recommend

the opportunity to take a boat through these canals

and just relax, that looks really fun.

And from here, we're gonna go see another floating market,

which is not too far away.

Yeah, there's another floating market about,

it said about 15 minutes away that I wanna check out,

so we'll just stop by there for a little bit

and see how it is.

That was an absolutely beautiful drive

through the coconut trees to get here,

and that was about a 15 minute drive,

and this is called Talat Nam Bang Noi,

and it is right on the edge of the Mekong River,

I can see it right up here.

(jazzy folk music) Oh man, at first I thought

that was a CD playing, that's a live band!

Fantastic!

I gotta give it up to the live music,

that is a highlight of visiting this market.

This is a really relaxed floating market as well,

but it's right along the Mekong River,

which is a huge river, and then kind of

right in the parking lot on the side of the temple,

so it's almost like a community,

it almost has a community center feel to it.

The girls and the babies are walking around

the market shopping.

This is a good shopping market,

especially for little Thai things and souvenirs,

and so I have taken this opportunity to sit on the bench

near the water and eat some mulberries,

and mulberries are, I think they're popular

to eat at this market, they're kinda famous

to eat at this market, and I like how

she has made a mulberry, a little basket

to hold the mulberries in, and then

put the mulberries inside, and then she put it

in a plastic bag, too.

Oh yeah!

Mm!

Oh, that gives you an immediately burst of sourness,

before any sweetness.

Mm!

Those are really good.

We're walking around the market,

and we came back to the car to feed Mika,

and also, we're eating some snacks, so I'm gonna try.

This one is khanom gluay, it's a banana

grilled in a banana leaf, long and skinny.

Let me break it in half, oh, very sticky.

Loo at that, oh, it's hot, right off the grill.

Mm!

Yeah, it's really good.

It's nice, you can taste the banana like,

tastes like a dried banana with coconut,

and then it has like a, it's almost like caramelized

on the outside.

Oh, Mika!

What I really enjoyed today was visiting

Talat Nam Tha Kha, that was the highlight of today.

It's about an hour and a 1/2 outside of central Bangkok,

and it's definitely worth the trip,

that's one of the best floating markets in Thailand

that I've been to, I just enjoyed the whole atmosphere

of the market, and then we just kinda stopped here

just because we were in the area,

and those mulberries were delicious.

I'm gonna end this video now, it's been a,

yeah, just a great Bangkok day trip,

and good to get out of Bangkok for a little bit,

and I really love this Samut Songkhram Province

in Thailand, and the relaxing markets,

and the whole feel of the entire province,

this entire area.

Landon Mackenzie: We Don't Have A Picture Yet- a film by Anthony Grieco - Duration: 4:25.

Artists are really privileged to have a studio.

It's not a domestic space.

When you come back in, it's got all the things,

the habits that you left behind the day before.

You turn on the lights, it wakes up,

and you can re-enter where you were in your work before.

When I was a teenager, I had a chance to go

to Harold Town's Studio.

He was a good family friend.

I had known him since I was small

and he was in the Severn Street Studio in Toronto

where the Group of Seven had worked.

And I didn't know at the time if I could become an artist,

but I did know that I wanted this life,

this place called the studio to be in my life.

The idea that you sort of enter a space,

and you could physically change it day by day,

not really knowing where you were going,

but really building some sort of narrative.

That was the part of conceptual art that I really grabbed onto.

The idea that you could sort of set the rules to a game

and then you follow the game and then you implement it,

you accept it and you see where it leads.

I'm in a great group studio with other artists.

A big space, and I began to do these dark paintings

reflecting on my memories of the North living in the Yukon,

and eventually those turned into the Lost River paintings.

Some people have written about them as wolves, I have written

about them as a kind of a wolf/caribou hybrid creature.

They are creatures and they are stand-ins for humans.

I raised three children here in East Vancouver.

I had one in Montreal, one in Toronto and one in Vancouver.

Each child changed perhaps some of the

working methods that I had.

The pregnancy meant that I just was having more

and more trouble getting up and down the ladder.

Finally I just took it down, I put it on the floor and I

became really excited about the idea of living

and working inside the painting.

If the landscape is a painting, I am within the landscape.

Typically the big works will start on the floor

for about half their life, until I have this kind of

nest of a puzzle.

As a little girl, there had been a very important map,

which was the pull-out part of Lands Forlorn, a book

that was written about the 1911 expedition of a relative.

The little map with its little red lines going up

into the Arctic was a very key moment in imagery for me.

I remapped Canada over 21 enormous paintings.

It was about a 15-year long project.

These maps had alternate layers of true maps

which we would call The Record and Fiction.

My preposition really was that the early maps

from the late 19th century and early 20th century were fiction.

They themselves were just government documents

or the railway-scheduled documents in order to call

into function a colonial possibility.

It appears to most people to be abstract,

but actually its representational.

I just have removed things, like horizon lines,

that make it simple for the viewer to kind of identify

with a Group of Seven landscape.

It's just trying to represent something that we don't have

a picture of yet in the world.

The idea of the conceptual practice of a never-ending story

actually could have a different kind of resolution,

and the fixed ending is one where I know that it's just

one many endings that's possible,

but it's a poignant moment where everything

sort of seems to gel for that painting.

I think it's Rhys or maybe Rhys, probably Rhys.

He says here, "Question: I know in the book 'How to Win Friends and Influence People'

it tells us to never criticize, but I feel there may be some scenarios such as reviewing

something to give feedback and telling someone with something genuinely wrong like health

problems or something along those lines."

He says, "These can be considered criticism and I feel sometimes they are appropriate

opposed to what the book suggests.

If you disagree with me, I would like to know how you would instead deal with scenarios

listed."

It's sort of a trap because if I disagree, am I criticizing you?

We can disagree without criticizing people.

I'll also say this like—okay, there's 2 books that I read or that I kind of like balance

between that I think we should all kind of balance between.

One is "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and the other one is called "The 48 Laws of

Power."

Two very different books, two very different ways of dealing with people and power and

situations.

Two different models, I would say.

Now, they both work.

They're both effective.

Now, you might say that 48 Laws of Power is the evil way and How to Win Friends and Influence

People is the good way, but that's not necessarily true.

Those are necessarily—those are tools and in some context and situations, some things

are going to work better from 48 Laws of Power and you got to know how to protect yourself,

and some things are going to work from How to Win Friends and Influence People.

I like to take things in life and I like to look at both extremes.

Okay?

I like to say, "What if there is no God?

What if you are God?"

I like to say that.

I like to look at those places in between.

I like to look at all kinds of different things on that because I find—in fitness, right?

I like to look at, "What if you eat 8 meals a day?

What if you eat no meals a day or one meal a day?"

Right?

I'm on the one meal a day side now, but that's a good example.

In that case in the fitness industry, there's plenty of bodybuilders, professional bodybuilders

that still eat 8 meals a day, 7 to 8 meals a day.

Big guys winning competitions.

Totally in conflict with intermittent fasting guys that are eating one meal a day or fasting,

most of the time winning competitions, doing good, ketogenic.

There's all kinds of ways that work and you kind of got to be open and you got to realize

that there's different models that are totally in contradiction to themselves, but still

work.

Because a model is not about truth.

I've talked about this a lot.

A model is about a representation of the world that works in such a way, at least in your

life, that you put in some input and you get the desired output.

That's a good way of evaluating things.

Aside from having God come down and tell us what the universal truth is and all matters

in life, we're going to have to like utilize models and use what works, and a lot of those

models are going to be really, really inaccurate.

Now, do I think that the models presented in both of those books are pretty good and

fairly accurate?

Yeah, I think so.

Where am I going with this?

Where I'm going with this is this, is on the subject of criticism, don't just take everything

that is in How to Win Friends and Influence People as absolute gospel.

There's going to be times when you are going to need to criticize.

He's outlining a principle and I think that even—I think even Dale Carnegie who authored

the book would agree with me in saying that—and a lot of people do this.

I do this a lot too, is to talk in extremes.

He says, "Never criticize, condemn or complain."

Does he really mean never?

What he means is like have that be your guideline, your principle.

That's your go-to.

You say you're going to go that, but that doesn't mean that there's never ever some

kind of exception or some place for that.

I will tell you this from personal experience, is that it's a very minuscule spot because

the thing is in order for you to criticize someone effectively, they have to be the 0.01%

of the population that responds to criticism and actually improves their life.

Now, I'll give you an example of someone who did.

I did this video on being a one hit wonder that Scott Nimrod had sent me a question.

I'm remembering this because he recently—I've seen his results and I've talked about this

multiple times.

He gets free publicity for me for being that .01% who takes criticism and actually applies

it to his life.

I did that video and he changed his whole approach.

He took the feedback from that video and the criticism in there.

It wasn't harsh criticism but it was criticism, nonetheless, and he applied it and he's the

kind of guy that can apply it.

If you're not dealing with that kind of a person, you don't know you're dealing with

that kind of person, it's just going to be a waste.

It's going to be a waste of time.

It's going to be waste of effort.

It's going to waste of your speech because you're going to get negative responses from

that, and that's the majority of people.

Most people are not worth your criticism, right?

You got to deal with those other people in a different way.

You got to use positive reinforcement and that's what How to Win Friends and Influence

People is all about.

It's about the idea that negative reinforcement just basically generally doesn't work, there's

a very small percent you'd be the kind of the person.

I think.

I did this video on accepting criticism but never giving it.

I think that's—I'm pretty sure I did this video.

Maybe I just dreamed of doing this video.

That's what you want to be.

You want to be the kind of person that can accept the condemnation, that can accept the

criticism, that can respond to it.

It doesn't always mean that you just believe everything that everyone says.

I've also done a video on talking about not taking feedback.

Honestly, I think, for the most part, you shouldn't take people's feedback.

You should make your own decision and make up your own mind, but there are times where

if someone criticizes you, you should be evaluating that and making some decisions based on that.

You need to be that kind of person, but you need to be that kind of person that doesn't

give to criticism because, in general, it's just going to fail.

It's just not going to work.

Only the special, special people.

There's very special people in my life who I will give criticism to and it's very, very

small.

Even then it doesn't always work but I appreciate criticism from those people and they appreciate

it from me because we're able to have each other's best interest at heart.

Those are what I call true friends.

Those are people who will tell you like it is because they care more about you than you

care about you.

Aside from that, follow the advice of the book.

Again, I talked about 48 Laws of Power.

There are some interesting things in there too.

You might need to apply some tactic.

I mean if someone is going to fight dirty, you might have to—the only win may be a

non-win move.

You got to be able to work there, but, specifically, I think you asked about things about health.

Let me see, you said, you know, it's appropriate when like they have health problems or something

along those lines.

There's a way to present information that is not criticism, which is to sort of say

something along these lines and say—to ask a lot of questions, Socratic method.

I should probably do a video on Socratic method, but essentially to say something like where

you lead someone in a direction and it becomes their own idea, which, again, this came from

How to Win Friends and Influence People because he talks about this idea of making someone

believe that the idea is theirs or taking ownership for it.

Maybe they'll eat 2 helpings of it.

The idea is that you say—let's say for a health issue thing, you say, "That is interesting

that you are on a candy bar diet.

That is very interesting.

I'm curious to know why."

Then you let them answer and then you say, "That's interesting.

I heard and I could be wrong here, but I heard that high fructose corn syrup that's in a

lot of candy bars can raise insulin and cause diabetes.

This is what I thought that—now, I could be wrong and this is why I think this, but

what do you think about that?

I'm curious to hear your take on this.

Do you think this has any merit?"

You can present information in such a way that you're presenting the information to

them and you're not judging them, and you're taking sides.

You're not criticizing them, but you're giving them the steps.

You're walking them by the questions that you're asking to arrive at the obvious conclusion

that you shouldn't be an on an all-candy bar diet or that smoking is bad for you.

This is some practical things.

Whereas, if you come at them and say, "No.

You're wrong."

They're going to come right back at you.

Again, another part of How to Win Friends and Influence People.

He says, "If you come at me with your fist doubled, I can guarantee I'll double mine."

There's ways to deal with this without coming across with criticism.

Again, I'd encourage you probably to read How to Win Friends and Influence People again.

I'll put a link for the book one more time here if you haven't gotten it.

I read it—and I'm not saying this to be offensive to you because I read the book about

at least once a year, usually twice a year just to make sure that I've got it fresh on

my mind and I catch more and more things when I do.

It's an extension of the body.

For sure.

Because drawing creates an intimacy

through the brush and the ink.

I have a lot of intimacy so it's a prolongation of myself,

and it's easier for me

to transmit the emotions inside me.

It reveals a lot of the things I feel.

[On-screen text:] In 1970, Michèle Cournoyer began making animated films

with highly personal subjects, where autofiction, surrealism,

fantasies and repressed secrets filled the screen.

And I imagine that doing it through animation

gives you a great freedom as well as a great permission.

[On-screen text:] She produced several major works including A Feather Tale,

Accordion, Robes of War, and Soif.

It's more like surrealist play

and so it dedramatizes.

It allows for all kinds of freedom and games.

But in order to reflect on my subject,

I draw and create several versions.

I start over, I'm always starting over,

that's how I find things.

I can start the same sequence over again several times.

When you say several sequences, how many drawings is that?

The same subject?

I can start over eternally, that sequence.

- Of 24 images? - Yes.

And you get a different result each time?

Yes. Sometimes it's not necessary,

but sometimes it helps to find something else I hadn't found.

It's also a kind of obsession.

You get there... you see that almost nothing's happened.

Yes, a lot of things have happened.

Oh yes? You see them?

They're accidents... sometimes.

But it's true from one drawing to another,

and that's why animation is so long.

If you want the movement to be fluid,

then it can't be an enormous change.

But there are sequences that are faster than that and those ones,

the wilder ones,

sometimes the more we do,

the more impulses and urgencies we feel.

There it's happening really fast and that's where

the drawing is riskier.

They're accidents... sometimes.

And resembles you more.

You think so? [Laughs]

More surreal, like I say, the same word.

Dark humour, in the end.

Le 2 Install Resurrection Remix Android 7.1.1 Nougat - Duration: 2:57.

LeEco's Le 2 is a great budget phone but the UI seems a little bit heavy and Cartoonish.

And the Android 7 Nougat update also hasn't arrived yet, so here's a Tutorial on how

To Flash Android version 7 to your Le 2.

The Rom we're going to use is the Official Resurrection Remix Nougat build which was

released 4 days ago.

To flash this Rom you'll need to unlock bootloader and flash TWRP, on which we already

made a video.

So to watch that video click the I button on the top right to first install TWRP then

proceed with this video.

So let's start flashing Android 7.

Boot into The TWRP mode by pressing Volume Up and Power key together.

Then go to wipe click Advance wipe and Select Dalvik Cache, Cache, Data & System and then

swipe to wipe.

After it's done go to install and select your ROM file, select add more zips and select

the Gapps for android 7.

Then swipe to confirm Flash.

It will take a few minutes to install.

After its done select wipe cache & dalvik and swipe.

Then hit the Reboot System Button.

Remember the first boot after flashing any ROM takes About 5-15 minutes.

So don't Panic if it's taking some time.

You can see now we have successfully flashed the ROM.

Let's Skip the setting up process and dive right into the ROM.

After the setup is Complete.

It will ask you to choose between Pixel launcher and official CyanogenMod Launcher.

You can now see the Home screen of Nougat & pixel launchers App Drawer.

Let me Crank up the brightness to make things visible.

Here's the Nougat Settings menu.

Android Version 7.1.1.

The settings menu shows some preview of the settings right from the menu so you don't

have go into each every time.

The all new Quick settings & Notifications bar.

You can add new tiles to Quick settings from here.

There are a ton of tiles available in Resurrection Remix.

So that's it Guys I have used this ROM for 3 days now and I haven't found any issues

or Bugs.

Korea's small bookstores make a comeback - Duration: 4:47.

Korea's independent bookstores, or "chaekbang," have struggled under the weight of competition

with mega chain bookstores, the growth of online shops and the popularity of electronic

books.

It may have seemed inevitable that they would vanish into oblivion, but they're slowly making

a comeback, as our Kim Jung-soo shows us in our news feature tonight.

Starting in the early 2000s, the Korean government enacted a controversial series of fixed-price

policies for bookstores nationwide, banning aggressive discounts by mega chain bookstores,

with the hope of breathing new life into Korea's independent bookstores, or "chaekbang," to

restore balance to the entire cultural ecosystem.

While the number of bookstore chains stayed virtually the same in the decade from 2005

to 2015, the total number of bookstores nationwide fell from about two-thousand in 2005 to just

over 15-hundred by 2015, which was a near 25-percent drop.

But price competitiveness wasn't the only reason for the decline.

"While the smaller chaekbang continued to sell workbooks or paperbacks, Korea's chain

bookstores slowly started reinventing themselves as entertainment complexes for all five senses."

The makeover has caused an important change in public buying trends.

According to a survey by Korea's culture ministry in 2015,

nearly 60 percent of adults said they preferred to get their books from chains or e-book stores,...

while only 12-point-5 percent said they preferred smaller, independent bookstores

But that doesn't mean the chaekbang aren't also trying out new things.

"These bookstores aren't just outdated relics of the past.

They're reinventing themselves to offer both a cultural and communal experience."

This bookstore in Yeongdeungpo-gu District looks rather unassuming from the outside,

but as the saying goes, it would be unwise to judge a book by its cover.

Once inside, the customer is struck by a strong and pleasant aroma that's a mixture of the

perfumes on sale inside.

The scents are mixed and manufactured by the shop owner himself, who majored in chemistry

and once worked for a perfume company.

"Mega-bookstores have been problematic for small shop owners, but I think the local stores

are also to blame, as they have also been too slow to adapt to changing trends.

That's why I came up with this idea."

Alongside some perennial classics of Korean literature, the store showcases perfume that

the owner was inspired to make while reading and a display of the books that inspired him.

The books come wrapped in plain gift paper with keywords written on the front like clues

to a mystery,... adding a new layer to the experience of interacting with a book.

"I came here to find a Valentine's Day gift for my mother.

There's great synergy in combining books with perfume.

I believe the scents actually help me concentrate on my reading as well."

And not far away, close to one of Seoul's busiest subway stations in Hongdae, another

bookstore has reinvented itself as a shelter for tired passengers....

"I wanted my store to help lighten the burden on travelers in two ways: first, people need

good information about places to visit, and second, they always need a convenient place

to store their heavy luggage while in transit."

The store also encourages readers to design and publish their own travel stories.

It has a mini publication studio, and organizes periodic meetings between readers and travel

writers.

"From the beginning, I've never thought that I was really competing against the mega-bookstores.

With a smaller shop like this, I can make individual recommendations about good travel

books and become quite close to readers."

Ultimately, the owner says he hopes that people can rediscover the meaning of travel and share

their definitions, which is what experts hope can happen with bookstores as well.

"Once you visit a small bookstore, you become part of that special community.

The small stores are no longer invisible per-se, but actively and physically connect readers

with the specific content or themes that the books convey."

Although it is obvious that bookstores will never actually stop the growing demand for

digital data, it seems they've found a different purpose which is just as meaningful -- providing

people with crucial opportunities for human contact and interpersonal connections.

Jewelry-making.

People think of jewelry as something that is

simply ornament and has very little to say.

But when you start to really look at something

for a long time that's that small and detailed,

you're carried off into a place that is like a dream.

And it's a paradox that a piece that's this small

and intricate can capture so many ideas.

This one is part of a series called States of Matter.

The intention there was to think about what physicists are doing,

which is trying to understand what we are,

what we are made out of.

What is this material that makes our universe the first matter,

that expansion of that big bang, that huge collision?

Paper is at once a kind of inexpensive material

that we don't think of as having any lasting quality

but stamps are considered very precious by a lot of people.

So you have this interesting contrast

of the way we treat stamps;

collected, treasured, or thrown out or recycled.

I thought that it would be interesting to place them

in the context of the precious by framing them

with the sterling silver.

This is a very recent piece,

and I'm still trying to figure out where I'm going with it.

It's made completely of alternative materials,

of wood, of polymers, paint.

This could be a landscape, but not on our planet.

People come close to look at your work

when you're wearing something unusual,

and it usually does start some kind of conversation.

No BS Test - Feiyu Tech WG Lite Single Axis Wearable GoPro Gimbal - Duration: 3:53.

⦁ Is this tiny wearable single axis gimbal worth looking into?

Hopefully I can answer that question for you coming right up.

Frickinjim here and this is a No BS Test of the Feiyu Tech WG Lite gimbal.

⦁ So I first saw this thing in a video by Schaff where he made it look really neat,

like an easy and affordable way to add a new dynamic to riding videos.

The gimbal is supposed to stabilize the camera on the roll axis which exaggerates the look

of the bike leaning in videos.

⦁ It is really neat in theory, buuut it really didn't work out perfectly for me in

practice.

But before I get into the review, I figured I'd show a little bit of unboxing.

⦁ The gimbal comes in a really cheapo feeling case with a zipper that barely even works.

Not a great first impression, but at least they tried!

⦁ The case contains a USB battery charger, two sets of batteries for the gimbal, an alternative

GoPro link to allow the gimbal to be mounted from the side instead of the bottom, the gimbal

itself, a GoPro stick-on mount, a USB charging cable, a power cable which allows the GoPro

to be charged off of the Gimbal batteries while using the gimbal, a GoPro clip-in mount,

three adhesive pads for the stick-on mount, some strange USB connector that I've yet to

even use, and the clamp kit that holds cameras onto the gimbal.

⦁ Now, for actually using the gimbal, it is really easy.

The batteries load easily, the clamp is easy to assemble, and then the camera easily slides

into the gimbal and is tightened down just using the knurled screws.

⦁ Holding the Gimbal power button turns it on and it immediately tries to balance

the camera to the horizon.

Sometimes it gets confused when powered on and thinks the camera is upside down, but

simply clicking the button tells it to stabilize in the other direction.

⦁ The whole little contraption is really compact, which makes it very much wearable

and just as easy to mount as the camera without a gimbal so that's awesome.

I'm able to have it mounted in exactly the same place as my camera is normally mounted

on my helmet.

⦁ Unfortunately, within minutes of testing this thing in the dirt, I realized this gimbal

is not up to the task of being used on a dirt bike.

The gimbal cannot cope with the constant jarring and vibration of riding off-road and ends

up just producing a very shakey image that is much worse than just riding without the

gimbal, though it does look pretty cool going through low speed corners.

⦁ On top of this, every 30 seconds or so of hard riding confuses the gimbal and it

loses it's balance with the horizon, requiring a re-balance by either clicking the gimbal's

power button, forcing the gimbal back in line with the horizon and holding it there, or

forcing it over to the opposite side for a second and then letting it go.

⦁ So it's definitely not something I'll be using for every helmet cam video.

It's just way too inconvenient having to re-synchronize it with the horizon so often

I will keep it, and I will use it for getting certain shots, but it definitely won't make

it into every video.

⦁ So while this gimbal might make an awesome toy for the street rider, it really won't

work well for someone riding off-road.

It is really disappointing, because of how cool it makes cornering look when the thing

actually works.

⦁ So I hope you've found some value in this video.

Although I don't recommend you purchase this gimbal for use on a dirt bike, I'll still

put an affiliate link in the description for anyone who still wants to check it out for

less extreme uses.
