Hello everyone welcome to surviving death, on this channel we share tips on how to make
it out of deadly situations alive, so subscribe because it could just save your life someday.
Here are the top 5 ways to survive a bear attack!
#1 ALWAYS BE ALERT IN BEAR TERRITORY
The bear population is concentrated mostly in Canada and throughout the North West parts
of the United States and surprisingly, some have even been spotted as far down as Florida!
Most of you guys should only be weary of two bears which are black bears and grizzly bears.
You are more likely to see a black bear than a grizzly bear because black bears are more
curious and adventurous while grizzly bears prefer to stay near streams where they can
go fishing for live salmon!
Really quick, here are some interesting facts differentiating black bears from grizzly bears
because knowing their difference is crucial in defending yourself in a vicious bear attack!
The biggest difference between a black bear and a grizzly bear is their massive size.
Grizzly bears weigh on average 800 lbs while black bears weigh on average 300 lbs.
Black bears typically have 2 inch claws while grizzlies have double the claw length as black
bears.
Yikes!
Another important difference to point out is that grizzlies are typically the color
brown and have a hump near their shoulders unlike black bears.
Now that you know how to spot and avoid a bear, that doesn't mean he won't come
looking for you.
#2 ALWAYS CONCEAL SCENTS
If you trail through the woods smelling like old spice and grilled hot dogs, you will call
all yogi bears to the yard!
Scents that attract bears the most are fish and berries and pretty much anything else
that smells like food.
This means that when you are hiking, double zip loc bag anything that has a scent to it
especially your innocent little berry flavored chap stick because bears can smell scents
from up to 20 miles away!
Funny story, a guy from Wyoming by the name of Edgar who worked as a park ranger came
back to his car to find that it was torn to pieces.
Why was it torn apart you ask?
Well, he vaguely remembered during his lunch break eating a Jack links beef and cheese
snack and a chunk of cheese fell from his mouth and lodged in between the side of his
seat.
When he got off work he couldn't find his car until he realized that his doors were
pulled of the hinges with the sides smashed in from being rolled over.
The only explanation when he saw his snack wrapper amongst the rubble was that a grizzly
bear was determined to find that little piece of cheese wedged deep between his car seat.
Good thing he didn't meet face to face with that bear which leads me to my next tip…
#3 NEVER RUN AWAY FROM A BEAR
Black bears and grizzly bears prefer for you to run away so they can rip you to shreds
like the prey you appear to be but if you don't run, they will perceive you as another
predator in their habitat so this makes them consider whether they should stand their ground
and fight you or retreat so what you do at this very moment determines whether you become
lunch or live to see another day.
If you stumble upon a bear and that bear doesn't know you are there, slowly retreat away from
the bear far enough to where you think it can't hear you.
Find a resting area and stay put about 30 minutes.
Do not eat anything but instead sit tight and make noise like singing or talking out
loud to ward of that bear or any other bear from coming in your direction.
After 30 minutes the bear should have moved on so now you can continue on your way.
#4 THE BEAR BLUFF
This tip if for black bears only so you better not do this to a grizzly unless you want him
to turn you into shredded lettuce.
First off black bears and grizzly bears do what is called a bluff charge and you must
remember that this is not an attack, this is a warning.
When I saw him charge, I jumped to but when you see a bear do this to you in real life,
do not run I repeat, do not run.
A bluff charge is very fast!
They move quickly to kick up dirt and snarl and then they abruptly stop to evaluate you.
When this happens, you are to gently talk in a monotone voice with your arms wide open
to give you a bigger appearance as you are walking away while still facing the bear.
Under no circumstances are you to look a bear directly in the eyes because bears take this
as aggression, especially grizzly bears!
This is the perfect time to use your bear mace so you better have more than one and
you better have them readily available strapped to either your hip or your chest.
Bear mace will only affect the bear within 40 feet which is scary close.
When you spray, you better haul butt and get out of dodge because mace disorients and enrages
the bear.
If you cannot get away from a black bear quick enough and it starts attacking you, you better
beat them like they stole something!
They typically reach heights of 6 and a half feet while standing and their size is a lot
easier to handle than a grizzly bear.
Do not play dead with a black bear because they will continue to attack you.
The best thing to do is ferociously fight them with anything that can be used as a weapon
while also screaming and yelling to make that bear retreat.
Now for our last tip, you will not fight a grizzly bear because they can and will kill
you.
Keep in mind that both bears are very dangerous but because of their differences, you have
to use different strategies when defending yourself against a grizzly bear attack.
#5 CONCEAL YOUR VITAL PARTS FROM A GRIZZLY BEAR
If a grizzly attacks you, you better ball up like a baby and pray to god that it finds
you non-threatening and a waste of its time.
Before it attacks you, still slowly back away, and still use bear mace if you have to but
do not engage in a fight with a grizzly because they will rip your body open and destroy you.
True story, a bear researcher had gotten too close to a grizzly bear that was awakening
from being tranquilized which he knew not to do.
The grizzly was actually more aware than he thought and with one quick swipe, the grizzly
bear decapitated the researcher who died instantly from that attack.
Because grizzlies are the more aggressive bear of the two and more likely to attack,
you are to lay belly down and protect your neck and head with your hands.
Place your non-dominate hand over your dominate hand and press your face into the ground,
if you are being attacked.
The bear will try to turn you over to reveal your front but keep rolling back over onto
your stomach.
If the grizzly has you pinned down, punch it in the nose, gouge its eyes or punch it
deep into the throat if you have the opportunity.
Doing this will startle them because if you inflict pain on them, they will rather leave
you alone than feel your blows.
