Heart News - Radiologietechnologie - Duration: 3:41.

Welcome to a new episode of "Heart News",

the news series about the cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences FH Joanneum Graz

and the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017.

As promised, today's episode will be all about the course of radiological technology.

Therefore, we will switch over to our correspondent Julia Putzger.

Julia, who will you talk to today?

Today I am at the institute of radiological technology.

I will interview Mrs. Steffens and talk to some students of the course as well.

Hello Mrs. Steffens, thank you for taking your time for this interview.

I want to start right away with a fundamental question: What is bone density measurement in general?

Bone density measurement is a procedure to determine the content of mineral salts of the bone.

Through this it is possible to predict the stability of the bone.

What technologies will you use to do so when working at the Special Olympics?

Because it is not ethically justifiable to use ionizing radiation,

we will use a different technique, which is called ultrasound-sonometry.

It uses ultrasound to measure the bone mineral density.

It must be said that this is not a medically established procedure,

because the measured values are not comparable to those from the DXA scan.

However, when doing a screening, it is still possible to identify risk factors of a reduced bone density.

How much does an examination cost? Who pays for it?

The equipment is provided by Special Olympics.

This means that there are no costs for equipment for the FH Joanneum.

However, the FH Joanneum can provide personnel resources.

My colleague and I will operate as supervisors and our students will support us.

You have already been at the Special Olympics Pre-Games in December last year.

What did you experience there?

Since our equipment did not work at that time, we helped in various areas.

For example, I worked at the blood pressure stop,

where I had to write down blood pressure values and I got in touch with the Special Olympics athletes,

even though our device did not work.

Have you had any experience with the athlete's reactions?

Our colleagues told us that the event is very emotional. Can you say something about that?

I worked as a general supporter,

so every time I saw people queuing somewhere I went there and asked if I could help.

All the athletes were very open-minded and friendly and I felt very welcome immediately,

it was a great atmosphere.

What is your motivation for supporting the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017?

Volunteer work for people in need has always been important for me.

In this case, it has been a good opportunity to broaden my wealth of experience.

By supporting the bone density measurement,

the course of radiological technology makes an important contribution

to the "Heartbeat for the World" as well.
