Welcome to this episode,
this time it will be completely different, because we will talk about public transport trip planning.
And here we will use application that allow something like this,
but most importantly,
it is possible to make your own
transport network available in the selected area
and that is the most interesting element for this episode.

Let's make a trip planner!
Our activities will base on Moovit application,
from what we get from main application page,
it already operates in more than 1200 cities in the world.
What is most important to me, here is application that allows you to plan your trip,
we are on higher level
than the applications displaying only departure time from stop.
And journey planning
is from user's point of view indication of point A
from where he goes
to the point B to which he wants to travel
and role of application is to show him the best route of travel.
This type of applications I think we already know a few in Poland.
Most popular is jakdojade.pl,
we also can use application MyBus
or in some cities there is also Google Transit available.
But we will focus on Moovit, for me it was most interesting, because user by himself
can build a transport network, after which he will move later and plan travel on it.
I think this will be an interesting example for us and after this episode
each of you will be able to introduce transport network.
Let's first see how does it look like to plan a trip
on a website.
Here we have an initial screen, we can immediately go to trip planning
or first we will check in which cities in Poland is this application available.
By default is selected Warsaw,
there are many countries here,
but let's choose Poland.
And so we have Lodz, Lublin, Szczecin, Toruń, Warsaw,
Wodzisław Śląski, Wroclaw and Zakopane.
Let's stay in Warsaw,
ok,
well, let's plan our first trip.
Let's do some distant trip,
we will go from Nowodwory loop,
we have a starting point, we will start from Nowodwory cause there recently opened tram route no. 2
to new loop,
so we will see if data is up to date,
and we will end at Wilanowska loop.
Okay, it was proceeded,
we actually have a walk, tram number two and ride by M1.
Here's how it looks,
here is a 10 minute walk along the street,
a tram line 2, a tram ride to the subway.
This interchange is indicated here by a rather funny path,
because basically from a tram stop,
you can go directly enter metro station, you do not have to go through any tracks or streets
and then we reach destination by metro.
How long will be our journey?
It's probably not in this detailed view and here we have the general
- 59, not nearly an hour.
Search options are not particularly well developed,
here we can choose the best route,
least of pedestrian walking
or minimal number of transfers,
or choose the particular means of transport we want to go by.
You can even search for last ride on a given day. Such a curiosity,
because sometimes it happens so that there is no longer any departures after certain hour.
It is interesting,
I can not determine to what extent this is true,
because I think that from Nowodwory night buses are going all night,
so I do not know in what respect
that is last course of day,
especially we have here departures after 1: 40,
maybe later there is some major break in interval, I do not know.
Okay, so this is how it looks from perspective of webpage,
similarly I will show you briefly how it looks on the phone.
I do not think we will be able to dwell on that very much,
but only to see that it is on the phone, and in fact,
the phone is the first preferred device for using this app.

Okay and we have a start screen, we can plan a ride.
I want to go to Wileński Railway Station and from where will I pick from?

we have Aluzyjna,
such a simple route, search for it.
And we have 211 and 509 lines,
showing travel route, you can live navigate on it
to see how it looks.
What else. Apart from planning a trip,
we can still see lines route, for example line 14.
Okay and we have a direction from Metro Wilanowska to Banacha.
We have a ride
and we have the closest departure at 15:06,
and here we have the whole timetable.
We can also change the date.
Information about first and last departure is also interesting (5:45 and 21:05).
Also if you during ride turn on app
you will get a notice about getting off when you will arrive at proper stop, although
here in Poland voice stop announcements are already in majority of vehicles,
it is not so much needed but it is also interesting.
And what else, we can
watch each station on map, stations near our point.
Where are we? In city center
and we have stations near the center,
each individual stop,
with closest departures,
some I see that do not even have departures,
but these are buses.
And here we have the nearest departures of each line,
you can see that a lot of it.
Even some departures shown at 23,
but still they will be made.
That's how it looks.

we have alerts on changes in routes,
it is also a useful case.

And, at once, we can get a downloadable lines scheme,
wow, such things as I do not associate in jakdojade app.
Let's see what it looks like.

I think we will not spoil app any longer,
because we have to see much more.
If we want to manually introduce a transport network,
eg Warsaw is already available, but we live in a city where there is no application for planning a trip,
we can join community and start to build stops, lines and timetables.
It starts from filling out the form, most important is to choose the area on which we want to work.
And then click on join, we will receive an email confirmation that we have been accepted
and then we can enter the editor.
How to get to editor,
I have page already loaded,
but there is an address editor.moovitapp.com.
We enter login and password.
And we are already logged in the area.
I am attached to kujawsko-pomorskie voivodeship, here I can edit all operators.
Summary window of project, here we have how many operators are added,
number of stops, lines
and routes entered with map marking on which they move.
We also have some notifications
or we can send message here between users of editor.
Well, let's start building,
first stage is introduction of stops.
I am already in Bydgoszcz,
but maybe we will change to my hometown Torun.
I will show you just how to add a stop,
we will do it in a virtual place. Add a new stop,
click on the map,
we can name it,
enter also the type of vehicle that will stop here.
Ok,
save and we have a new stop.
If we want to remove it
- we remove it
because it does not exist.
These stops as you can see there are already introduced in network as much as needed.
The operator tab,
here we have introduced operators (or organizers) working in Kuyavian-Pomeranian,
we will enter MZK Toruń
and specific lines serviced by operator.
I sincerely admit
that application may be outdated for Toruń.
Here you have to pay attention to important thing in this kind of application,
that is, if you introduce a transport network,
you are also partially responsible you to update data,
especially timetable.
Best case would be that transport organizers would put this data into application
or prepare export of GTFS data format for automatic network import into the application.
Well, I see that we have a line 05 that was not introduced here.
You will see how to enter a new line.
It is going from Olimpijska to Plac Skalskiego,
so we add new line,
I see that it was not there.
Let's try to find it?
Nope, there isn't any. So we will add it.
New line.
We choose operator MZK Toruń.
Short line name 05.
Long name is relation in which the line rides:
Olimpijska – Plac Skalskiego.
Type of line
- night bus but there is no night option here.
Active
– set that when you enter all data of such route.
I got special color for night bus,
but it is not important now.
Save.
We have entered line so we can add route to it.
Headline is basic direction in which route will lead.
We do not have a distinction whether or not there is more important route, usually it is hard in Poland to choose more important direction.
That's what you can say, it's hard, but ok for now...
For now we will add Plac Skalskiego,
we will try to enter stops and shape the route.
Okay,
we're introducing stops
- we're starting from Olimpijska bus loop.
Stop for entering vehicles.
Let's see how it's on timetable.
Olimpijska, line rides via Kosynierów Kościuszkowskich stop,
Ligi Polskiej,
Wyszyńskiego, Ślaskiego and Przybyłów.
As you will see along route
it will be led a path drawn to the street,
which will determine the length of route.
Further mapping is ongoing.
And we have end stop Plac Skalskiego – Toruń Plaza.
We should add that part of name also.
Save.
We have route, but we need to load a shape.
Re-generate shape.
Route is already nicely mapped.
Sometimes there may be some
inaccuracies on map, so it is best to verify
that everything is tight.
But from what I see
in this case we do not have any problem.
So we can save it.
Okay.
Another thing
- intervals between stops,
you can also rewrite it from original timetable for example.
Although here we can discover another disadvantage of this solution,
we have only one possible variant of transit time between stops.
What in case of small networks is not such a big problem, but in Warsaw these time intervals between stops are very important.
And here in principle at this stage we can miss accurate timetable,
resulting that application is moderately useful.
It is a pity that it was not decided to introduce more time intervals,
because it is in our case in Poland very important.

We have departures
daily and special Christmas Eve timetable,
we will introduce everyday one.
We enter timetable editor,
choose direction to Plac Skalskiego
and if it is to be every day we choose
all days.
Individual departures can be entered here, in windows
we can also enter a list of departures in format described,
separated by commas.
And what we have 00:53,

4:38 is a departure to depot (it needs a separate route),
and 23:38.
Add and we have departures introduced. Save.
We have already one route ready.
We will find our 05.

Here you have to make a lot more.

And our departures if we choose all days will show
that they are introduced.
So this is the preparation of the line
in this application,
first we introduce stops,
later routes, timetable at end.
To enter a timetable, you must first enter departure calendar.
And this calendar in sense of how operators / organizers use,
is a set of day types, should be as small as possible,
it will greatly make it easier to enter timetables.
Here we have a basic division into working days, Saturdays and Sundays,
then we have special cases when in spring or winter
departures are done differently than in summer and autumn,
it can be distributed on school days
or vacation weekdays.
The specific timetable for Toruń is, for example, Friday nights for selected lines.
Another elements are holidays.
Unfortunately, there is no possibility of introducing a special timetable for only one day,
so you need to assign
a schedule for specific day which timetable would be used.
It is complicated and does not necessarily have to be true in case of holidays.
Here, by default, all our holidays are implemented as a Sunday distribution,
but that may be wrong (check it in your case).
That's in shortcut creation of such a transport network in an application.
There is also a community board where you can discuss with community
what is happening,
what are development plans,
what we want to create,
exchange of point of views
and we can see how many members we have active in our voivodship.
I hereby briefly show you everything,
but there is also a help center where you can read about how this transport network is created
and what you need to remember to do it just fine.
Similarly, on the editor's home page there are videos
showing how easy it is to create this transport network.
I have also mentioned GTFS data format,
which allows you to automatically import timetables into application,
such data can be issued by operators or transport organizers and this makes it much easier
to import data in application.
Operators, along with a change of timetables, prepare such data format
and it could be automatically downloaded from server into which file is inserted in this format.
What is the structure of this format,
what are attributes, variables, what you can describe in GTFS,
you will read under link that I inserted in description of this material.
Next step in development of such trip planner would be getting data in real time.
And here also there is GTFS in real-time,
which contains information updated from vehicles
how they move in network, they transmit delays
and in what predictable time they will arrive at each stop.
This enables real-time planning, this is higher level development of this type of application.
In Moovit in Poland real time is currently not used,
but maybe someday it will be also.
So far, real-time planning
allows jakdojade.pl in Bialystok
and MyBus in selected cities too.
