Oceans ministry says first Sewol-ho ferry load test was not successful - Duration: 1:43.

The recovered Sewol-ho ferry was expected to be back on dry land by Friday, but the

date will be pushed back after a load test failed to yield a positive result.

The test found the vessel was far too heavy to be safely brought ashore.

Lee Unshin reports.

The process of getting the Sewol-ho ferry onto land has hit a delay.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on Thursday that the first load test was less

than smooth.

"In the first load test, they were almost able to lift the ferry, though not entirely.

Because of the weather and the process being undertaken at night, officials were not able

to confirm the condition of the vessel and steel lifting beams."

Workers had placed 480 wheeled steel platforms, known as modular transporters, on the underside

of the ferry for the lift.

But the equipment wasn't able to withstand the ferry's weight and they weren't able to

get the stern onto the transporters.

Crews will now have to adjust the placement of the transporters before they give it another

try.

Each modular transporter can stably support 25 tons but can withstand a maximum of 40.

Based on the test, it's estimated that the ship weighs 14-thousand-600 tons, due to the

excess water and mud inside the vessel.

The ill-fated ferry sank in April 2014, leaving 304 dead, most of them high school students

on a field trip.

Nine passengers are still missing, but once the vessel is moved onto land, investigators

will undertake a search for their remains.

The race for the presidency is on... with the nominees from all of Korea's major political

parties now in place for the election on May 9th.

The liberal Democratic Party of Korea has chosen its former leader Moon Jae-in,... who

has had a solid lead in the polls and favorability ratings in the 30 percent range over the last

three months.

The liberal People's Party is also going with its former leader Ahn Cheol-soo.

So far Ahn is Moon's closet rival... but he hasn't yet broken through the 20-percent mark

in the favorability ratings.

The conservative Liberty Korea Party has picked Gyeongsangnam-do Province Governor Hong Joon-pyo

to lead its ticket,... while the splinter group Bareun Party has named representative

Yoo Seong-min.

The minor progressive Justice Party was the first to choose a nominee, naming its leader

Shim Sang-jung in February.

But those five will NOT be the only candidates to show up on the ballot,... as more political

heavyweights have already or are expected to announce their candidacies soon.

Kim Chong-in, the Democratic Party's former interim leader, announced his bid earlier

this week as an independent,... saying he's hoping to win the support of the people despite

not having the backing of any political party.

The corruption scandal surrounding Korea's ousted leader Park Geun-hye and her confidante

Choi Soon-sil has resulted in high favorability ratings for the liberal bloc,... prompting

speculation that the conservative party candidates could join forces to mount a challenge.

But most pundits say... the chances of that are slim,... with the two leading conservative

contenders -- Hong and Yoo -- remaining split on the idea.

It's time to turn the spotlight on each of Korea's presidential candidates ahead of the

May ninth election.

We'll be taking a look at who they are... and what pledges they're putting forward.

We begin this series with the frontrunner in polls, Moon Jae-in, the nominee from the

largest political party.

Moon Jae-in was the former leader of what is now the Democratic Party of Korea... and

two days ago he was nominated as its candidate for president.

It's his second time running for the nation's highest office,... losing very narrowly to

ex-president Park Geun-hye in the last election in 2012.

Moon is a former pro-democracy activist and human rights lawyer and was a close ally of

Korea's late president Roh Moo-hyun.

He served as Roh's presidential secretary... and his chief of staff.

What he stresses now is the need to bring the nation together by eradicating the wrongdoings

of the past.

He hopes to get rid of the factors that led to the massive corruption scandal... and ultimately

the arrest of a former president... and end social divisions based on ideology, geographical

region and age.

Moon and his party have been calling for what they call "balanced diplomacy" with respect

to the U.S. and China,... and, on the North Korea issue, they've argued that sanctions

aren't the solution.

Regarding the deployment of the U.S. missile defense system THAAD,... Moon has not definitively

said whether he would reverse the decision.

But he has called for public and parliamentary discussion of the issue,... and dialogues

with the U.S. and China if he becomes president.

He also supports a Korean peninsula free of nuclear weapons -- meaning that Pyongyang

should denuclearize itself... and that U.S. tactical nuclear weapons cannot be allowed

in South Korea.

He hopes to resume operations at the Kaesong Industrial Complex -- an economic project

jointly run by Seoul and Pyongyang that was suspended in February last year.

Moon has also said the agreement reached between South Korea and Japan in 2015 on wartime sexual

slavery has to be re-negotiated... because it was reached at a time when former president

Park's close friend was meddling in government affairs.

On the economic front, Moon has promised to create jobs by curbing the existing workaholic

culture,... and that his government will form new committees focused especially on job creation...

overseen directly by him.

To make a more transparent and fair society,... he aims to have corporations adopt transparent

management structures.... and limit power of state prosecutors.

Among the presidential nominees from Korea's five major parties,... Moon Jae-in has the

highest support... at near 40 percent.

Official campaigning starts in roughly two weeks,... and the key for Moon will be winning

over the Democratic Party voters who supported his rivals in the primaries -- Chungcheongnam-do
