Pitch Deck Playbook part 2 - Duration: 8:27.
Hi, my name is Mike Lingle and today
we're going to talk about pitch decks
and I've been looking at a few different
pitch decks this morning and I pulled
some examples of stuff great and stuff
that could easily be improved so let's
dive right in first of all I think it's
important with pitch decks not only
should you be out raising money but you
should also be working on getting
traction and proving that what you say
in the pitch deck is actually going to
happen and that you're going to be able
to make it happen you know a lot of
investors see entrepreneurs come in and
say hey I'm going to do this and it's
much more compelling to have someone
come in and say hey I AM doing this so
what can you be doing to prove that what
you're saying in the pitch deck is true
and so the examples I've pulled from the
pitch decks today we're going to talk
about the competitive landscape
financials market size the marketing
plan unit economics and the marketing
funnel and if you don't know what these
are don't worry I'm going to take you
through it so first this is a sentence
that jumped out to me in one of the
pitch decks about the competition:
"Barriers to entry are small to
non-existent. Our company with its first
mover advantage can become one of the
industry leaders." There are two things
that make me nervous about this. One is I
think there's a misunderstanding of what
a barrier to entry is. You actually want
barriers to entry you want to create
barriers to entry so that other people and
competitors can't follow you. so you
actually want to be creating giant
barriers to entry! And the second thing
is first mover advantage is not a
competitive advantage. just ask snapchat
which is now being cloned by the
features are being copied by Facebook
and Instagram. First movers or any
company that's been crushed by Apple or
Microsoft or big companies that come
into a market late. There's actually a
some great blog posts on a blog
called "a smart bear" where he talks about
what is actually a competitive advantage.
let's move on to financial projections.
so these are great I like the base case
and the upside case I don't think you
necessarily need both of those in the
pitch deck but once you're talking to
investors it's great to have these
different scenarios. I do like the annual
summaries here, but I'd also like to see
the first year broken out into monthly
and then I would note on this that all
numbers are in thousands because it took
me a minute to figure it out including
the number of downloads are in thousands
and I think that's important. and so
then I usually sanity
check stuff and I'm looking at it so if
you're telling me there's 1.6 million
downloads per year that's actually a lot
of downloads and maybe you have to pay
two to three dollars per download and so
two dollars for download x 1.6 million
downloads is a three million two hundred
thousand dollars just in cost per
install and you're telling me your
operating costs are $3.766 million so
I'm skeptical about how much money
you're going to have to spend to get
those downloads. Plus retention sucks for
apps so on this chart you can see even
snapchat which is hugely popular only
gets twenty two percent of its customers
to return after 21 days and so there's
another app called blippar and they get
half a percent .so you'll probably be
somewhere in the middle. so you can
actually see the top leaders are
averaging about six percent so you
really have to model that into your
projections as well the fact that most
of the people you pay to install your
app aren't coming back and aren't useful
to you. and so here's an example of
financial projections and again I'm
jumping around between topics a little
bit I think there are lots of great
places to innovate when you're a startup
but presenting your financial
projections is not a good place to
innovate. I would show the standard
spreadsheet view. I would show revenue
and the sources of revenue. I would share
your cost of sales I would show your
expenses, and I would show your EBITDA. I
would not present it like this. The other
thing that's happening is the blue line
that you see running through the chart is
actually the expenses. What I'm
seeing here is the revenue, which are the
bars, is usually either equal to or
greater than the expenses. So I don't
understand why this company needs to
raise money if it's always cash flow
positive. I'd rather see that
there's a gap and that
investment is needed to cover the
expenses. Jumping on to market size this
is from a slide for a dating app and it
tells me some really interesting things
which is great as an investor. So the
dating industry is the third largest largest
attractor of internet users. It's in the
growth life cycle stage, it's doing about
three billion in revenues, about half of
US adults are not married which is a
giant population, and the existing dating
services the existing dating apps
have only penetrated about
fifteen percent of the population and
that's growing. it's almost doubled since
2010 and people are staying single
longer- so now okay I know there's a lot
of dating apps but you're telling me
there's a big and growing market so I'm
interested in listening to your pitch. I
want to see that you're positioning your
company to catch a wave and this does
you know it looks like there's at least
something worth looking at here.
Here on this market size slide it does
tell me the market size and the number
of practitioners but it doesn't tell me
the growth rate and again I want to see
that you're catching a wave and I want
to see that that wave is growing so this
market could be shrinking or this market
could be growing. I don't know. You need
to tell me more information to capture
my attention here. Here's an example that
is the kind of thing that I see a lot
where there is a marketing plan of sorts
but there's no data and there's no
identification of what works,
what doesn't work, what has worked, what
might work. So essentially what this
slide does is say, "Hey investor we're
going to take your money and try a bunch
of different stuff and we don't know
what's going to work and what's not
going to work." That's not the most
effective way to present to investors.
What IS effective is going to investors
and saying, "Hey we've done some
experimentation." There's something
called cost to acquire a customer or
CAC. Here I can see they've tried
a bunch of different things and gone
from five hundred dollars per customer
down to $22 per customer so there's two
smiley faces there I know that they're
not going to focus on cell phone dealers
and they are going to focus on social
networks and members getting members. so
that's great! that's good data to bring
into the pitch deck. and then unit
economics are also great. So this allows
me to compare the lifetime value of the
customer (or LTV) to the cost to acquire a
customer (or CAC) and I can see that
there's a huge gap and that's the place
where the company can become profitable.
I want to see that you know those
numbers. I want to see that you know your
revenue sources. i want to see that you
know your cost to acquire a customer, and
then I want to see that there's a big
difference between the cost of
acquisition and the lifetime value.
because again that's where the company
is going to make money and all of this
shows me that you've done your homework
and you're going to use my money
responsibly. As an investor another great
thing here is the unit economics. So this
is essentially a marketing funnel and
what this shows me is how many ads you run,
how many downloads you get, how many sign
ups you get, how many activations you get,
how many of those users return, and
how much revenue that turns into.
I've Xed out the revenue number, but this
again allows me to understand your
business model and understand that
you've done the work and the testing and
you have some real sense of how much
money you can make by taking in this
investment. So that's just a run-through
of stuff I'm looking at this morning.

What is FundRef? - Duration: 2:16.
Hi there.
I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined.
Today I am going to discuss FundRef.
FundRef is a "who's who of funders worldwide."
The Funder Registry was started by CrossRef and provides a taxonomy of grant-giving organizations.
FundRef can be found at the CrossRef website and is available as a downloadable file that
is free to all users.
The registry lists funders and a unique identifier for each one.
The registry originates with the publisher Elsevier and is updated throughout the year
with new funders.
Authors participate by listing their funding sources for their research in their publications.
This helps detail the groups that may have helped support the work.
Then publishers collect the funder's names and grant information.
The information is synced with the listing of funder IDs from the CrossRef Registry.
Then this information is added as metadata to the article, specifically the funder name,
funder id, and grant number.
There is no fee to authors or to publishers for participating in the system.
There is still infrastructure work to be done to ensure a smooth flow of data between all
appropriate systems.
This fact aside, the existence of FundRef has gone a long way to bringing order to this
disordered area, to the relief of many of the interested parties.
All publishers and information producing organizations should be fully participating in FundRef.
CrossRef lists some of the many benefits of the FundRef system:
-The ability of organizations to more accurately better track their grants,
-Research institutions can review what their faculty or staff have published,
-Publishers can analyze the sources of funding and confirm compliance with funding mandates,
and, -Transparency for the public with what is
happening with research dollars.

Goldsmiths Research Question: How many ways can you say I love you? - Duration: 2:15.
What I noticed when I first got
interested in this type of research was
that a lot of the work that's been done on
couples talk was done by social psychologists.
When social psychologists
study couples interaction and affection
in couples interaction they produce a
lot of data but that also means
frequently that you have to rely on
interview questions and kind of certain
ideas about what affection means.
It doesn't quite allow you to notice very
idiosyncratic creative ways of
expressing affection and I think that's
exactly what we can do in linguistic discourse analysis.
My work especially is interested
in spontaneous interaction so I really
tell participants usual just to
record how they talk with one another so
I don't give them any instructions.
Really what's so lovely in this data from this
particular couple is that they've got so
many fun ways of expressing affection
for one another, they hardly ever say I love you.
One of the main ones is that
they have these playful insults such as
you're dumb, you're stupid, you're cupid then
they start rhyming or they're switching
into a baby voice, they do that a lot
she says things like to him like you ghust face
you maas face which means
so ghust, maas is Sylheti, it means fish or chicken.
and face is English so they've got both
languages together so essentially she
calls him a chicken face.
If couples have got these recourses
like a different language
then they can work with these
resources to show affection so it's
this playfulness that comes out of the
data and I think a lot of that we could
potentially miss if we come with certain
a priori ideas about how people express
affection so this is why it's important
that we don't just transcribe what people say
we have to transcribe when the voice changes
we have to transcribe pauses
really the next stage of my research is
now to work with more couples so this is
just a first study
this whole question
about what language were reveals about
identity is at the core of what we teach
here at Goldsmiths

Orange: The Most Underrated Color in Menswear & How To Wear & Combine It With Classic Men's Clothing - Duration: 10:55.
Welcome back to the Gentleman's Gazette.
In today's video, we discuss the color orange, how you can use it your outfits to make the
most out of it and look dapper.
Recently, we discussed another very underrated color in men's wear which was green.
You can check out the the in-depth video here.
Today, we discuss orange, which is another highly underrated color in men's wear but
it can make you look really elegant and dapper, you just have to know how you utilize the
color.
Unlike a green suit, you cannot wear an all orange suit without looking outlandish or
clownish, however if you use orange in doses such as a vest or maybe a shirt, a pocket
square, a tie, or a boutonniere maybe even socks, you can get away with it and it just
looks very, very handsome.
Also, it can be an accent color in sports coats or suits, such as here in the windowpane
which is quite orange.
In the beginning, you wanna understand what shade works well with your outfit.
You can have a dark orange, such as this almost rust colored orange, and you can have something
lighter in a two-toned or something really bright like this polo shirt here.
If you take a close look in the outfit I'm wearing, my shirt actually has a very pale
orange undertone.
On the other hand, my vest is a very strong orange.
So, it almost looks like an off-white shirt and there's enough contrast even though both
are orange.
Then, you can combine it with a tie, like this turquoise tie with it's orange elements
or the green that has orange windowpanes.
So you see, all these colors are very different yet they work really well together.
In my experience, darker shades of orange such as this rust orange knit tie by Fort
Belvedere or this bowtie which is a two-tone Shantung orange with a black undertone, they
work really well for Fall/Winter colors.
On the other hand, for summery outfits you can go with an orange or sometimes white two-tone
look, maybe a linen material and it's brighter, airier and it has a pastel tone to it which
is very appropriate for spring/summer outfits.
Orange is a wonderful color that is warm and is such that works particularly with brown tones.
At the same time, it also works well with things like black or charcoal which is usually
more of a business color at the same time, you can pair it with navy, or with green like
what I'm wearing here right now.
One of my favorite combinations of orange is mixing it with charcoal because it can
be dressed up for business suit or dressed down in one with corduroys in brown ones with
a kind of tweed outfit during fall/winter.
On top of that, orange is one of the few colors that works with any kind of skin tone.
If you're Black, if you're Indian, If you're Asian, If you're Caucasian, no matter what
skin type you are, this color works with you.
Just make sure you have a high contrast, if you yourself have a high contrast because
of your hair and your skin tone, or if you're black, then also go with high contrast items
such as a light shirt with a bold tie.
And if you're fair-skinned, and you have very light hair, try to go with something a little
less contrast.
I like to wear a knit tie with tweed coats or sports coats in the summer and you could
also have a sweater or a sweater vest that is modeled with green and brown undertones.
For Spring/Summer outfits, I found that orange works really well as pocket squares, you can
wear them with lighter sports coats or dark ones, patterned ones, it doesn't matter, it
always looks very summery.
If you wanna go a bit more casual, a polo shirt is great and so are shorts.
I like this color in a pastel orange which is not too bold but different from any other
kind of short colors that are typical such as navy, beige or khaki.
The all-purpose kind of sock in charcoal and orange is also great.
Orange in your outfit instantly gives you a spring/summer feel or a warm, cozy fall/winter
feel and that's why it's such a great color to have in your wardrobe.
So how exactly should you combine orange?
As I said, it's a very versatile color and you can wear it for example with all kinds
of black shoes and, black oxfords, black derbies.
Just make sure it ties it together such as in brown and orange socks or charcoal and
orange socks or black and orange socks.
I suggest you check out that video on how to combine shoes with socks and pants to get
a much better in-depth understanding of how you can use orange to your advantage.
Personally, one of my favorite colors to combine with orange is brown.
I like it with chocolate brown but also with dark brown or lighter browns.
They all work really well and having that combination just makes you stand out because
orange is not a color most men usually incorporate in their wardrobe so you don't even have to
be loud to really stand out but people will compliment you because it's different and
elegant.
Some of my favorite brown items include a brown suit, a brown jacket, you can wear them
in separates, a brown tweed, and brown corduroys.
When it comes to green, I like to pair it with dark green, such as a suit.
Sometimes I just have the pocket square, and maybe a solid green jacket, or like here I
even combine the windowpane orange with a dark green tweed.
You can also work with a kind of olive green in a tie for example and the range of green
is quite wide always work with orange especially with a more rust tone or something very light
as you can see here.
A little more exotic combination of orange is to pair it with purple.
It's not one of those color combinations you think of in the first place but it actually
works rather well.
In this pocket square, you can see it combined with green tones and blue tones and every
though most of these colors are bold, together they are much more sensible and elegant.
Another personal favorite of mine is combining orange with blue.
That can be orange with a dark navy suit or a mid blue, or a royal blue suit, and again,
it can be your tie, can be your pocket square, maybe your shirt and it just helps to really
offset each other because there's enough contrast and it's a bold combination, it's similar
to yellow, so it's good if you wanna make a noticeable first impression without being
just the clown that is over-the-top obnoxious.
If you're not sure what orange and you want to start out, I suggest to go maybe with a
blue blazer, a blue suit, a light blue shirt, and instead of a red tie, try to use something
in orange.
Just use one element in orange at first, and then later on, once you're comfortable, you
can maybe add a second element, but most of the time, that's really all you need.
In my example, I used more orange because I wanted to show you how versatile it can
be and you probably wouldn't have even guessed that I have four different kinds of oranges
on this outfit because it doesn't look like that, because it's so pastel-y and here you
have this strong turquoise, you have the green, it's just not your typical combination.
If you don't like blue very much or you have a lot of darker suits, try to go with a charcoal
and orange, or even black and orange because it harmonizes very well together, and it's
just one of those staples that any men can wear no matter what skin tone they have or
what other elements they have in their wardrobe, it'll work for you.
If you have an accent of orange that's on the top half of your body, such as a tie,
a vest, a shirt, or a pocket square, it works particularly well if you pick up the orange
with your socks.
This orange and charcoal socks are one of our bestsellers, and you can totally see why
because they simply work so well with everything, and make everyone look dapper.
Now you know how to wear orange and how to start, the question is, "What mistakes to
avoid when wearing orange?".
As I mentioned before, try to stay clear of solid orange suits because they're simply
over the top.
If you want something that is similar, maybe go with a tobacco brown linen or add a slight
herringbone pattern, that can help but an all orange pair of pants is never gonna look
advantageous and neither is a suit or just a jacket.
The only exception well maybe be a very light pastel color for summer, but even so, I suggest
you go with a khaki kinda suit or a stone-colored instead.
Personally, I try to stay clear of very bright oranges because they remind me of construction
workers or reflective vests and I find that just to be too attention grabbing.
Instead, I go with richer colors of orange, that just have a different depth.
That being said, it can still be a lighter orange but it's still richer and these are
as well, but it's not so bright and garish as the reflective neon orange.
Also, do not combine orange with red items or pink items, because it's too much and it
looks odd.
If you go with orange, bear in mind it's a bold color and that means tone other things
down and keep only orange as your only accent in your outfit.
When you pair orange, tone down all your other accents because orange is a bold statement
and it can look very good, however, if you use too many other things, it's just conflicting
information and people don't know where to look.
Once you incorporate a few orange items into your own wardrobe, you'll quickly see how
versatile this color is and how good it will make you look.
If you're not sure where to start, I suggest, go with a pair of socks, then maybe a pocket
square, and then a tie or bow tie.
With these three items, you have a very great foundation, and if you find that you want
more orange, you can always add a pair of corduroys, or a vest just like I'm wearing
here right now, or a jacket.
But to start, stick with simple accessories, it won't break the bank and you can experiment
with them.
When I dabbled with orange at the very first time, it was actually very difficult for me
to find proper accessories, and so I designed a number of different ones to just pocket
square in different colors and material compositions, bow ties, ties, and socks, so you could have
a better access to that color.

Brain Training to Beat Procrastination with the World's Easiest Learning Technique | Barbara Oakley - Duration: 3:36.
The Pomodoro technique is probably one of the most powerful techniques in all of learning.
So I teach a course of learning how to learn that's actually the world's largest massive
open online course.
We have something like two million people.
And the Pomodoro technique is the most popular technique; I hear from literally thousands
of people.
And I have to give credit to the creator, who was Francesco Cirillo.
He developed this technique in the early 1980s.
And it's so simple that really anybody can do it.
So all you have to do is turn off all distractions.
So no little ringy-dingys on your cell phone or anything like that; on your computer you
want to turn off any kind of messages that might arise.
Set a timer for 25 minutes, and then just focus as intently as you can for those 25
minutes.
Now if you're like me, you'll start focusing away and you're working away, and then you
look up at the timer and two minutes have passed.
Then my brain goes, "I've only done two minutes?
I can't do another 23 minutes on this Pomodoro!"
And I let the thought just go right on by, and I return my focus to whatever I'm working
on.
And when that 25 minutes is up I relax a little bit.
I turn my attention to something else.
Now I will admit that if I really get into the flow of what I'm doing that I will continue
sometimes.
You might wonder why that 25 minutes is the magic number, and the reality is we don't
really know.
There's not a lot of research on the Pomodoro technique which is surprising because it's
so incredibly popular and people find it very useful.
But there's an interesting tidbit related to the Pomodoro technique, and that is that:
when you even just think about something that you don't like very much it activates a
portion of the brain that experiences pain.
And so the brain naturally enough shifts its attention to something else, anything else,
like Facebook or Twitter or something like that.
And what you've just done is you've procrastinated.
And what the Pomodoro technique does, when you do it you're setting that timer.
You don't want to sit there and think, "I am going to finish this homework set" or
"I'm going to work on this problem and get it all finished."
You just want to think, "I've got 25 minutes where I just have to work on something."
Don't even think about what that something is.
What that does is it slips in under your brain's radar.
It doesn't activate so much that pain in your brain; and then that pain in the brain,
research has shown it lasts for 20 minutes.
So if you work for 25 minutes you will suddenly find yourself getting into the flow because
you've gone past that painful period.
So the Pomodoro technique is effective in many different some very subtle ways and so
I highly recommend it.

Hey everybody and welcome to the video.
This is Josh here, and this is another episode of 'Walk With Me'.
Walk with me is a new series where you guys get to walk to work with me and I fill you
in on what's been going on in my life.
What I've been thinking about, contemplating, debating, all sorts of stuff.
A little more casual, a little more fun.
So we've got a lot of wind and a lot of cars today, I hope this new microphone has been
doing well.
I don't know if you guys have noticed, I got this mic a couple of months back.
You were all so nice to me when I was walking over, some of those older bridge videos where
the wind noise was so bad.
I appreciate you guys being so nice about it.
I finally did upgrade.
Someone was asking me about my camera setup recently.
I'm going to overlay some footage to show what it is, but as of right now I'm still
using my Canon G7X, but in order to get better audio I had to make a little bit of a separate
rig.
The g7x is an awesome little budget camera, but it doesn't have an external mic port so
it's really tough to get good audio.
I found a video, I forgot who it was so I apologize for not giving credit, but I found
a video online with a rig someone had thought of so I adapted it and made it my own.
So I have the G7X attached to something called a flash bracket, which normally you'd put
a separate flash for your camera if you're a photographer, but attached to the flash
bracket I have a Rode VideoMicro attached to a Zoom H1 digital recorder.
Because the microphone needs something to be plugged into, it's not its own recorder
and power.
The Zoom H1 has it's own microphone, but it's more of an ambient sort of mic that's picking
up all of the surroundings where as I need something that's more directional that can
cut out the wind a little bit better.
Yeah, so I have the VideoMicro plugged into the Zoom H1.
Then in editing I combine the two, the audio and the video clips, and that's that.
This past week though has been very very busy.
Had a couple of training and sales meetings and stuff for work, so I've been pulling these
13 and 14 hour days, it has been exhausting.
Like I talked about last week, I'm in the same store all week though, so I really don't
mind.
It's been nice getting back into the routines and the habits feels awesome.
Being able to plan, what splits I'm gonna do, what workouts I'm gonna do has been really
really great since I know my schedule enough in advance.

I like the beanie, but getting into the summer months, I just don't want to be the guy wearing
a beanie in the summer, it's not my style.

I wasn't planning on getting this style, I actually wanted to get a really basic simple
ball cap, but there's a hat shop in town called Goorin.
The guy in there was super helpful...
There's a hat shop in Portland called Goorin Brothers and the guy in there was super helpful,
recommended a couple of hats to me.
I tried this one on, it fits perfect, I think it looks awesome.
So this is gonna be my new summer hat, really looking forward to that.
Also, an update on the bullet journal.
I've been using it for probably about 2 full weeks.
That thing is awesome.
It's really made my days feel a lot less overwhelming and stressful.
Putting it on the paper, for me at least, really helps get it out of my brain and know
that I have it schedule and planned to take care of, so that's really cool.
It's been feeling really good, I am so excited to keep using that.
And also in some other news, I talked about being happy to have a regular schedule and
I was commuting out into the suburbs, I had a sales meeting the other day and my boss
had told me that there was an opening at the store in downtown Portland really close to
my apartment, so I am officially going to work over there full time.
No more suburbs, no more jumping around from store to store.
I am just taken care of.
I get to walk to work, it's going to be amazing.
So I'm finally...I remember the store that I'm gonna be in was the one I saw before I
had moved out here that I wanted to be at.
That's going to be really good, I should be able to make a little bit more money which
is going to be really awesome, but most importantly, I'm going to have more time.
As I get older and busier, I'm realizing the importance and value of my time.
Every hour makes a big difference.
This saves me about 3 hours a day in commuting compared to what I'm doing right now.
So 3 hours a day, times 5 days a week, that's 15 hours.
That's almost a full day of being awake that I get back.
So I get to spend some more time with my wife, I get to focus on you guys more, so I'll have
a lot more free time coming up to work on things that I care about more, which is super
excited.
On the note of being there for you guys, and being around a little bit more, I am making
an effort now to use some of my other social media channels, so I am still on Instagram
like I always have, but I'm also on Twitter and Facebook and Snapchat again.
I never really used my Twitter and Facebook before, just started that.
And Snapchat, I am going to be back and using it again.
So make sure if you are on any of those platforms, add me.
I'm there I'm active.
Send me snaps, send me tweets, I'd be more than happy to talk to any of you guys, I think
that would be super cool.
