The Bachelor Party • S01E07 • TPN's Angel Guide - Duration: 6:07.
The Bachelor Party finally gives the last member of our Angel Investigations trio some
backstory to work with.
In a season that has to this point felt a little drab or awkward at times, the Bachelor
Party is nothing but fun.
Angel is aiming for another evening with good book, I'm thinking Descarte this time?
Cordy is going out for an evening with an early 2000's lunkhead that Doyle and Angel
grill at the door.
I was struck by how dated her date actually looked compared to how timeless Charisma looked
in that dress.
Doyle's jealousy is showing as is his insecurity.
He is given a vision and he and Angel set out for a little Angel-style entertainment.
Cordy's date talking about stock options provides her a harsh contrast to the life
she has versus the one she thinks she wants.
Doyle is for some reason unwilling to fight in his stronger demon form which Angel comments
on.
After Cordy's date abandons her to a vampire we see Doyle's reluctance to go demon taking
a toll.
He saves her and Cordy seems to take notice.
As Cordy begins to take a chance in through the door walks Doyle's wife Harry.
Harry is getting engaged and her fiance, Richard, is played by Carlos Jacott, another actor
to repeat in the Buffy verse as a different character.
Jacott played the cultish demon in the episode Anne.
Harry has brought Doyle divorce papers so she can move on.
Doyle laments love lost with Angel as he nods knowingly.
Angel bends to Doyle's desire to check into Richard.
There is a shot I really like of Richard, walking through a dark alley, and the camera
panning up to reveal Angel following on the rooftop.
Very Batman.
Angel sees Richard go demon with his fiance and attacks.
Turns out Harry already knew and Richard is just a fuddy duddy demon.
This leads to Doyle coming to understand something significant.
"Harry didn't leave because of the demon in me.
She left because of me."
Harry's entourage are sitting around planning the party itself
"Darts.
Then we have the ritual eating of the first husband's brains.
Then charades."
"Wait what was that?
Charades?"
Doyle brings Angel to the bachelor party which throws a wrench in the works for the entourage.
Angel sees the ritual occurring and gets kicked from the party.
Doyle consents to endorsing Richard, unwittingly agreeing to let Richard eat his brains.
He tries to back out.
36:00 "Now I'm not so sure I even want to eat your brains."
Angel breaks up the scene and Richard gets in trouble with Harriet.
And the episode ends with Doyle having a vision of a certain someone...in danger.
I enjoyed quite a bit in this episode.
Glenn Quinn's performance of Doyle as a squirrely anxious and reluctant do-gooder
has been fun to watch but until this episode his character hadn't really been given any
meat to work with.
His backstory with Harriet is nice to take in as Quinn wears Doyle's grief on his sleeve,
as well as his eventual willingness to move forward.
Again Doyle's story here acts as an interesting and obvious parallel to Angel's.
Doyle's struggle with his demon was also ultimately responsible for the loss of his
relationship.
Borrowing a page from Buffy's structure, so far in 7 episodes if the plot wasn't
about Angel specifically the story related to him metaphorically.
It's not a plot device they sustain but it occurred to me this episode what a useful
way it was of revealing Angel's backstory early on, at least the emotional underpinnings
of it.
Cordy's shame over who she was an her belief that her current state in life is a sentence.
Doyle's relationship here.
"She didn't leave because of the demon in me, she left because of me."
"It's not the demon in me that needs killing Buffy, it's the man."
Anyone who'd not watched Buffy early on could still have a strong emotional grasp
of Angel's part in it thanks to these early episodes.
Of course Richard's brain eating tradition is hilarious commentary on the very idea of
bachelor parties themselves and other archaic customs.
"My family would never agree to the marriage unless we went through the custom."
It is believed that as far back as the Spartan's, men used to assemble to drink and celebrate
a groom's final night being single.
It wasn't until the 1960s that women began having bachelorette parties, a tradition altogether
different than the bridal shower.
The episode's opening cuts between Cordy's rich but tedious dinner date juxtaposed against
Angel and Doyle cleaning out the vampire nest were a nice lead into to where her story may
go.
Though, I'm still getting undistinguished echoes of other bits.
Doyles rescuing Cordelia and her ensuing smitten reminded me a bit of Xander saving her in
Some Assembly Required.
It is interesting that she describes both Xander and Doyle as fixer uppers when, the
lacking characteristics that make them so (namely wealth and success) are things she
is also lacking.
I love that contradiction.
This episode doesn't exactly raise some new questions regarding the lore so much as
pushes them farther.
Does Richard's demonessness introduce a continuity problem?
Is it ever explicitly stated all demons are soulless?
We DID have Whistler.
And the demon Faith killed to get the books of ascension.
Doyle's soul is assumed a part of his human half.
But clearly demon's can be good guys capable of some degree of altruism.
Sure he and his clan nearly engage in a barbaric ceremony but it was just that.
Ceremony.
Something we covered with the Cruciamentum in Helpless.
Clearly Richard loves Harry and most of these demons are living normal suburban lives.
But what about vampires?
In the Harvest, Giles's reads from origin of vampires: The books tell the last demon
to leave this reality fed off a human, mixed their blood.
He was a human form possessed, infected by the demon's soul."
So if human's have human souls and demons have demons souls this may yet again be an
argument that flies in the face of Whedon saying the soul is simply the moral compass,
an idea that much of Buffy's metaphorical framework is built around.
If you're a new fan of either Buffy or Angel understand, this conversation has no end.
Whedon himself he would always prefer to go for an emotional truth even it meant contradicting
the lore in some fashion.
And he's right.
I think that is the higher aspiration.
But as fans...we'll never stop talking about it.

and their efforts to swing voters in their favor.
Our Kim Hyesung shows us how candidate Yoo Seong-min from the splinter right-wing Bareun
Party is promising to provide new hope for the conservatives.
Clear and rational, but also warm and compassionate.
Under the slogan "New hope for conservatives," presidential candidate Yoo Seong-min of the
Bareun Party, which recently split with what's now the Liberty Korea Party, has vowed to
answer the people's call for political reform and social justice.
The 59-year-old former economist entered politics in 2000.
He's in his fourth term as a lawmaker representing his hometown of Daegu, and in 2015 served
as floor leader for the now-defunct Saenuri Party.
On the first day of campaigning, Yoo seong-min visited the Incheon Landing Operation Memorial
Hall, showing his strong stance on national defense.
Located where U.S.-led allied forces landed in 1950 and turned back North Korean forces
in the first year of the Korean War, it was a symbol of his determination to turn the
tide of this short presidential race in his favor.
In the first three days of the campaign, Yoo also visited schools, traditional markets
and subway stations across Seoul.
But he hasn't limited his campaign to the capital city,... or just to the regions with
a history of voting conservative.
"Here at Pungnammun Gate in Jeonju, people of all ages have come out to support Yoo Seong-min,
who is making his first visit to the southern part of the country since the start of the
official campaign period.
"I already visited the southeastern region, my home turf of Daegu, a couple times before
the official start of campaigning.
So, as my first stop outside the capital, I wanted to visit the southwest, where my
support is the lowest.
I'm not playing regional politics, so be it southeast or southwest, I'm willing to go

With warm smiles, handshakes and hugs, Yoo greeted his supporters in Jeonju who had waited
hours to see him.
"He has the virtues to be a good, reliable politician and the required skill sets to
lead our country as the son of the late parliament member Yoo Soo-ho."
"I think Yoo Seong-min really nailed the presidential TV debates.
He has confidence and a clear set of beliefs and values."
"Out of all the candidates, Yoo Seong-min has the most knowledge of defense and economic
policy."
As a center-right politician with a conservative stance on defense and liberal economic policies,
Yoo explained why he broke from the former ruling Saenuri Party in 2016 and founded the
Bareun Party.
"The reason I founded the Bareun Party is not just because of the impeachment of the
former president.
I want to start a new kind of clean politics.
We are at a time when social inequality is at a record high.
I want to reform the country and help the middle class."
To do that, Yoo's Bareun Party headquarters in Seoul has laid out detailed policies to
create a fairer market economy supported by more generous social welfare.
"Our party's goal is to create a country where people want to start families and raise children.
And our candidate Yoo seong-min, who has a PhD in economics and experience working at
the Korea Development Institute, has more economic expertise than any other presidential
candidate."
Despite his detailed campaign pledges, Yoo's support remains in the single digits.
The Bareun Party is pinning its hopes on Yoo's strong performance in the debates, which has
made headlines, and his creative campaign.
"Our group was formed only recently, and we can't spend as much money as the other camps.
To maximize efficiency, we're being creative -- like using bicycles and scooters instead
of cars and trucks for our street campaign, which helps create a sense of friendliness."
At a time when people are disillusioned with the conservative bloc following the nation's
biggest corruption scandal, candidate Yoo Seong-min is pledging to create a warm, new
conservatism that can bring the country together.

Koreans suffer from dual rise in consumer prices and unemployment - Duration: 2:17.
Despite a recovery in Korea's exports,... consumer spending has been cited as a factor
that could hinder growth this year.
In fact, Koreans are confronting unfavorable conditions caused by an increase in inflation
and a growing jobless rate.
Kim Min-ji reports.
Times are getting tougher for Koreans,... due to a rise in consumer prices and growing
unemployment.
According to Statistics Korea,... the so-called Economic Distress Index came to 6-point-4
in the first quarter,... the highest since 2012.
The index is a combination of the jobless rate and the inflation growth rate... and
aims to measure the amount of economic difficulty felt by the public.
The figure soared to 8-point-6 during the wake of the global financial crisis in 2008,...
and had since been on a downward trend due to weak inflation.
But the index is back up this year,... due to a spike in food prices, amid the country's
worst bird flu outbreak ever... and a pick up in global oil prices.
The unemployment rate also hit a seven-year high of 4-point-3 percent in the first quarter.
This comes on the back of corporate restructuring in the shipping and shipbuilding industry,...
as well as weak job growth among young people.
As a result, Korea's consumer confidence is low... and ranks near bottom among OECD member
countries.
The index for Korea came to slightly above 99 in March -- up for two straight months...
but still below the OECD average of 100-point-56.
The figure also puts Korea 30th among 32 member nations, with only Turkey and Greece ranked
lower.
A reading above 100 means consumers are optimistic about the economic situation ahead,... while
a reading below 100 reflects pessimism.
The weak figure has been attributed to the political turmoil that has rattled the country
since last year,... as well as the government's ongoing corporate restructuring plan.
On top of that,... weak income growth and a lack of measures to encourage spending have
been cited as reasons for weak consumer confidence.
Korea's nominal monthly household income grew 0-point-6 percent last year,... the slowest
rate of growth since 2003.

A labor activist-turned politician, and a long-time critic of the corruption in Korea's
public and private sectors.
With an impressive resume, Sim Sang-jung, the presidential hopeful of the minor left-wing
Justice Party, entered the race with a vow to create a nation where everyone can work
with a sense of pride.
"Together with me, Sim Sang-jung, let's build a new nation that brings change to everyone's
lives."
Sim began her political career under the then-Democratic Labor Party in 2000, a party she ended up
leading.
But don't let her soft smile fool you,... she's a tough cookie.
Before becoming a force in the National Assembly, Sim fought for decades to improve workers'
rights.
When she was a college student she took a job as a seamstress at a factory, where teenagers
worked day and night in poor conditions.
Thus began Sim's 25 years of activism.
Leading workers' organizations, she was often isolated in tough battles.
At one point she was even wanted on charges of instigating strikes,...
but her supporters say her experiences are what made her who she is today..a respected
candidate who's not afraid to give a voice to the underprivileged.
Her first stop on the campaign trail?
To Seoul's subway system to meet with mechanics, cleaners, and irregular laborers to tell them
they are the engine that moves Korea.
As someone who believes in the value of hard work... it's only natural for her to encourage
working-class voters.
"What time do you come to work?"
"10a.m."
"What time do you get off?"
"I get home at midnight."
The self-employed merchants at this market, who can only dream of having a day off...
let alone a week,... also welcome Sim's vision.
"Seomyeon, a popular meetup place and the commercial center of Busan.
This is the spot Sim chose to discuss with local residents her ambitions, to better young
workers rights as well as the potential this city holds."
With piercing confidence, Sim assures voters that she will bring an end to the widening
gap between the rich and the poor.
"I want to build a nation where everyone can work with a sense of pride.
And that's a nation that values skill and hard work, not one's wealth."
Her pledges center around helping women who are struggling to balance work and family
life....
"I love you."
"Please make our nation a great place to live in."
...something that both men and women have long called for.
"She's the most trusted candidate, especially among workers and young people.
If she becomes president, I believe she'll establish good polices on women's issues and
women's rights."
"We need forward-thinking policies when it comes to working mothers and the rising youth
unemployment rate.
I believe Sim will also work harder than any other candidate to make the economy better
for working-class people."
"As a worker, I think the reality is we can't take pride in what we do.
That's why I'm rooting for Sim.
I want a society in which I can see my value as a person through my labor."
Making voters in Busan, a conservative stronghold, listen... and even convert to her way of thinking
is one of Sim's uncanny abilities.
She's yet to poll higher than the other four major candidates,... but the party says that's
mostly due to its scale; as it holds just 6 seats in the 300-seat National Assembly.
"She hasn't had the same exposure as the other candidates, but those who meet her in person
or hear what she stands for come to realize she's the leader our country needs.
Sim's progressive policies are what we need in order to represent those who lit their
candles, against corruption among the powerful."
The corruption among the powerful caused an early election in Korea.
But Justice Party believes the nation now cries out for more than just an administrational
change and in need of a societal reformation.
As Sim tours the length and breadth of the nation to spread her message of protecting
the weak and vulnerable...her supporters have no doubt that she will be the one to deliver
that change in everyone's lives.

If you're like most people, chances are you pictured the men as being big and tanned,
covered in tattoos, with the women as being friendly, with flowers in their hair, doing
hula.
Now these are obvious stereotypes of Pacific Islanders that can take a whole video all
to itself, but the key point I'm making, is that Pacific Islanders are being ignored.
And what I mean by that, is that our ideas, our images, and even our stereotypes of the
Pacific and of Pacific Islanders is based on Polynesia, more specifically, specific
communities of specific parts of Polynesia.
I'm sure you have heard about Hawaii, Tahiti, and Samoa, but have you heard about Kiribati,
Nauru, and Vanautu.
Or did you know that Hula is not the traditional dance of the Pacific, but is uniquely Hawaiian.
Yeup, that's right, Hula originated in Hawaii, while the traditional dances of other Pacific
islands each have their own unique identities and names.
Or did you know that some Pacific Islanders even have dark skin with naturally occurring
blonde hair.
You see, the Pacific can be divided into three regions: Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia.
Each region consists of different islands with different cultures and people that can
be each individually explored and studied for decades upon decades.
And by far Polynesia is the most studied, and unsurprisingly the most well-known out
of the three and the go to image of the Pacific.
For that reason, this channel focuses on the lesser known Pacific region of Micronesia.

BC's economy.
Despite these studies, fares continue to climb while service drops.
For every dollar of federal funding that BC Ferry passengers receive,
Atlantic Canada receives $350 per passenger.
This gross disparity is not news to the government and should have been addressed
long ago.
Ferry service is essential to the Sunshine Coast.
As your MLA, I'll aggressively push for increased federal funding which would be used to return
control of BC Ferries to the provincial government.
You'll see better schedules and increased transparency.
