Today I want to talk about psycholinguistics. Namely about the section of psycholinguistics, which is called phonosemantics (sound symbolism).
Sound symbolism is a science that studies the psychological perception of the sounds of speech.
We are all to some extent endowed with synaesthesia. It seems to us that sounds have some qualities.
Sounds can be perceived by us as cold or hot. As light or dark, etc.
What is it for? Using sound symbolism, we can choose a nickname. And this can help us.
People perceive their names as part of themselves.
And names consist of sounds that are endowed for us with some qualities.
We transfer these qualities to our personality. That is, names affect us.
This influence can be positive or negative. Because a name is given to us by the parents. It comes to us by chance.
If a name corresponds to our natural data, to our innate character, then this is good.
Then a name helps us. It strengthens our qualities. It helps us to realize ourselves and be more successful in life.
But more often it contradicts our character. And therefore, it interferes with us, acts as a deterrent.
If we choose the right nickname, we can correct the situation. This nickname can be used on the Internet for example. After a while, we inevitably begin to treat this nickname as a name.
We will feel this name a part of ourselves. And then it will start working.
You see three tables. I compiled them on the basis of the work of the Soviet psychologist and linguist Zhuravlev.
Zhuravlev made very large statistical studies. The tables show two basic characteristics of sounds.
The scale "strength" - "intelligence" is located horizontally. That is, the more sound expresses strength, the less it expresses the intelligence. And vice versa.
This is illustrated by the signs "plus" and "minus" in the name of the qualities, and in the name of the columns of the table.
The same is true for the vertical line. "peacefulness", it is indicated by a plus sign. And "aggression", it is indicated by a minus sign.
I will show you how to calculate the characterization of a name.
I have a friend. Her name is Inna.
I will write in English letters to make it clear to all viewers.
The first letter is "I". We look at the characteristics in the table. This is -1 and +1.
Since the letter is in the first place, we multiply these values by 2. It will be -2 and +2. Because the first letter is more important.
The letter "N". The values 0 and +1. Multiply is no longer necessary.
One more letter "N". All the same.
The letter "A" in the same place in the table. Therefore again 0 and +1.
Summarize the values. Result -2 and +5.
Horizontal -2. Negative value. This expresses "intelligence".
Vertical +5. Positive value, this is "peacefulness".
That is, the combination of sounds "INNA" has a character combining "intelligence" and "peacefulness". And, more "peacefulness".
The analysis can be complicated. Because any pair of characteristics has an intermediate characteristic.
"Peacefulness" and "intelligence" have an intermediate characteristic "creation".
That is, such a sound combination helps a person to use creativity.
But it will be so only if а name is suitable for а person. If a person has such qualities from nature.
It does not fit the real Inna, with whom I am familiar. She is not peaceful. I know that she is aggressive.
What is the result? Something restrains Inna when aggression is appropriate. And Inna still shows peacefulness when it is not appropriate.
This is the case when it is very useful for a person to make a nickname.
I foresee some questions. And I'll try to answer them right away.
Tables are compiled in three languages. This is Russian Spanish and English.
The tables almost completely repeat each other. Zhuravlev proved that speakers of different languages perceive sounds in almost the same way.
Perhaps you are speaking in some other language. But almost everyone knows how the English letters sound. You can make the necessary calculations on this basis.
You see that there are not only letters but also combinations of letters. It expresses one sound. Such combinations are equivalent to one letter.
This situation does not arise in the Russian language. Because the Russian alphabet is almost perfect for the Russian language.
One more question may arise. The pronunciation of a letter can be changed in any language.
It is necessary to consider exactly how the word is written. Because, even if we say differently, but we subconsciously understand what kind of sound there is in fact.
I will show you one more example. To make it clearer.
The name of the character from the movie "The Matrix". "Neo".
Let's find out what characteristic this combination of sounds has.
The letter "N" is 0 and +1. We multiply by 2 because this is the first letter.
0 and +2
"E", this is 0 and -1.
"O", this is +1 and +1.
Summarize. Result: +1 and +2.
This combination of sounds has the characteristics of "strength" and "peacefulness".
Using this scheme, we see an intermediate value. This is "generosity".
Indeed, Neo seems to me a generous character.
Most often, names of literary characters are very suitable. Because an author knows what his character is, and subconsciously gives him the right name.
But this is rarely found in real life.
