3/28: Brown U. public health researcher found Meals on Wheels program is sound federal investment on - Duration: 23:55.

DAN: WE WILL TALK ABOUT A KEY

PROGRAM TONIGHT.

STATE OF MIND IS BROUGHT TO

YOU IN PART BY LOOKOUT RHODE

ISLAND.

DAN: PRESIDENTIAL

BUDGETS,

ESPECIALLY FIRST-YEAR PROJECTS,

USUALLY END UP WITH IN THE

GUILLOTINE.

THERE IS CONVERSATION AND

WASHINGTON, OTHER THAN THE

HULLABALOO ABOUT POLICY

AND

WHETHER SOME PROGRAMS ARE

ACTUALLY WORTH SPENDING MONEY ON

.

WE HAVE A SMART PERSON ON THE

RETURN ON INVESTMENT FOR THINGS

LIKE MEALS ON WHEELS COMING UP

THIS EVENING.

DON'T GO ANYWHERE.

WE WILL MEET OUR GUEST IN A

MATTER OF MOMENTS.

BUT FIND OUT WHAT IS HAPPENING

HERE.

BOY OH BOY, IT'S WORKING AGAIN.

DONALD TRUMP BACK AT IT

, TWEETS

ALL OVER.

RATHER THAN READING THEM ALL,

WHY DON'T WE JUST REPORT ON THEM

ALL.

PRESIDENT TRUMP TOOK TO

SOCIAL MEDIA MONDAY SUGGESTING

THE INTELLIGENT -- HOUSE

INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE

INVESTIGATE HILLARY CLINTON'S

ALLEGED TIES TO RUSSIA TWEETING,

RUSSIAN SPEECH MONEY TO BUILD

THE HILLARY RUSSIAN RESET FROM

RUSSIA STORY IS A HOAX.

THE RANT CAME AMID CALLS FROM

DEMOCRATS WHERE THE REPUBLICAN

CHAIR OF THE COMMITTEE, DEVIN

NUNES, TO RECUSE HIMSELF FROM

THE PROBE INTO RUSSIAN

ASSOCIATES.

A QUESTION HAS BEEN RAISED

ABOUT WHETHER HE CAN LEAD A

CREDIBLE INVESTIGATION.

ON-RAMP -- ON MONDAY

REPRESENTATIVE NEWNESS

TECHNOLOGY HE HAD A SECRET

MEETING WITH THEN ON --

UNIDENTIFIED SOURCE.

HE SAID HE VIEWED HIGHLY

CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS ABOUT MR.

TRUMP'S SURVEILLANCE CLAIMS.

NUNES REACHED THE PRESIDENT

BEFORE TALKING TO MEMBERS OF HIS

OWN COMMUNITY -- COMMITTEE.

I'M SURE THE DEMOCRATS WANT

ME TO QUIT BECAUSE I AM QUITE

EFFECTIVE.

THIS CAME ON THE SAME

DAY

JARED KUSHNER VOLUNTARILY AGREED

TO BE INTERVIEWED BY SENATE

LAWMAKERS.

THIS IS PART OF THEIR PROBE INTO

RUSSIAN MEDDLING OF THE 2016

ELECTION.

THIS AMID REVELATIONS KUSHNER

SAT DOWN WITH THE RUSSIAN

AMBASSADOR AT TRUMP TOWER DURING

THE TRANSITION.

RUSSIAN BANK WITH

DEEP TIES TO

PRESIDENT AND RUSSIAN

INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES.

THAT WAS PART OF HIS

ROLE,

AND HE EXECUTED IT COMPLETELY AS

HE WAS SUPPOSED TO.

A DATE FOR KUSHNER'S

TESTIMONY HAS NOT BEEN SET.

DAN: THAT IS A LOT TO DIGEST,

THE MORAL IS THAT DONALD TRUMP

CONTINUES TO TRY TO, I DON'T

KNOW, TO BEAT HIS WAY OUT OF

WHATEVER JAM HE MAY OR MAY NOT

-- TWEET HIS WAY OUT OF WHATEVER

JAM HE IS IN.

ISN'T IT ON -- ODD

, INSTEAD OF

COOPERATING HE DEFLECTS AND

TELLS MORE STORIES?

PANHANDLING PROBLEM

HERE.

THIS IS A NON-STOP CONVERSATION,

WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT THIS

EVERYWHERE FOR TOO LONG.

HEADLINES, REGARDING THIS, IT IS

A CHRONIC SITUATION.

THE COPS ARE GETTING TOUGH.

RIGHTS DEFENSE COMMITTEE -- A

CROSSROAD IN NEW LONDON AVENUE.

I'M HERE TO EXERCISE MY FIRST

AMENDMENT RIGHTS TO SHOW MY

OPPOSITION TO THE ORDER.

THIS MAN DEDICATED HIS ENTIRE

CAREER TO ISSUE SOCIAL JUSTICE

FOR THOSE IN NEED.

HE CALLS THE SAFETY ORDINANCE

UNCONSTITUTIONAL, A PUBLIC GUYS

TO SUPPRESS THE FACE OF POVERTY

AND HOMELESSNESS.

I WAS THERE FOR THE CITY

COUNCIL HEARINGS, THAT IS --

THIS IS DESIGNED TO TRY TO

RE VISION FOR

PEOPLE AND PEOPLE WHO ARE

STRUGGLING.

IT IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF

WHAT WE SHOULD BE DOING.

THE MAYOR CANNOT MAKE IT TO

MONDAY'S DEMONSTRATION BUT HIS

OFFICE SAID, THEY CONTINUE TO

STRESS THEY ARE IN NO BAN ON

PANHANDLING IN CRANSTON.

THE ORDINANCE PASSED IN FEBRUARY

RESTRICTS TRANSACTIONS IN THE

ROADWAY ITSELF.

SOME SAY THAT IS STILL TOO MUCH.

ANY ORDINTEMPTS

TO CRIMINALIZE BEHAVIOR

INDIVIDUALS HAVE TO ENGAGE IN TO

SURVIVE WHEN WE HAVE SUCH A

BROKEN SAFETY NET IS EVER GOING

TO BE FUNCTIONAL.

THE ORDINANCE CURRENTLY UNDER

REVIEW BY THE ACLU, POINTS TO

PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUES ASSOCIATED

WITH PANHANDLING.

SHE DOES NOT BELIEVE THAT IS THE

ISSUE, SHE SAYS THIS IS AN

ATTACK ON FIRST AMENDMENT

RIGHTS, A WAY TO CRIMINALIZE THE

HOMELESS.

IT IS HOMELESSNESS THAT'S

DANGEROUS, NOT STANDING IN A

MEETING TRYING TO SURVIVE.

DAN: THIS IS JUST

IRRESISTIBLE

FORCE, IMMOVABLE OBJECT.

IT'S AN IMPOSSIBLE SCENARIO.

BY THE WAY, I KEEP SAYING THIS:

WE NEED A STATEWIDE PIECE OF

LEGISLATION SO THAT THESE ISSUES

DO NOT MOVE FROM ONE TOWN THAT

GETS TOUGH ON IT 6 C13

I HAVE EMPATHY FOR THOSE WHO ARE

MAKING A LEGITIMATE CLAIM FOR

HEALTH.

BY THE WAY, CRANSTON CUFFS I

GUESS WTO PROVE A

POINT YESTERDAY, THEY TOOK TO

MEDIA PEOPLE TO COVER THE STORY,

INCLUDING OUR OWN REPORTER.

WE LOOK AT THE SKINNY ON THAT

REPORT BACK TO YOU.

STATEWIDE POLICY, ENFORCEMENT, I

THINK IS THE BEST ALTERNATIVE.

WE NEED TO THINK IT THROUGH, OUR

SIGNIFICANT -- THERE ARE

SIGNIFICANT FIRST AMENDMENT

RIGHTS AT A PRETTY.

--

JEOPARDY.

THERE IS A STORY GETTING A LOT

OF ATTENTION ON THE CONCEPT OF

-- POT AND COCAINE.

WE RAN THIS PIECE ON OUR

WEBSITE.

THE POLICE UNION IS HAVING A

PROBLEM, A YOUNG MAN WHO IS NOW

30 BUT WHO WAS JAMMED UP FOR

COCAINE SALE BACK IN -- AT THE

AGE OF 19, HAS BECOME SUCCESSFUL

WITHIN THE POLICE ACADEMY, WILL

BECOME A COP.

THERE -- ONLY 60 WERE EXCEPTED

OUT OF SO APPLICATIONS.

THE THEORY IS THAT YOU HAVE TO

KNOW A GUY.

I WILL TELL YOU WHAT, YOU CANNOT

HAVE A FELONY IN A POLICE

OFFICER, CONVICTED.

HE WAS NOT CONVICTED, HE MET

HALFWAY IN THE MIDDLE BY A

PROGRAM THAT INTERVENED YOUNG

PEOPLE'S EFFORTS WITH DRUG

SALES.

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IF YOU HAVE

A GUY WHO HAS TURNED HIS LIFE

AROUND AND WANTS TO BE A POLICE

GROUND AS TO WHAT IT IS LIKE OUT

THERE IN THE QUOTE, REAL WORLD

OF DRUG TRAFFICKING, THAT WOULD

BE AN ASSET NOT A LIABILITY.

WE WILL DIG INTO THAT OVER THE

NEXT FEW DAYS AND GET ANSWERS.

IN THE MEANTIME, DID YOU ARE THE

STORY YESTERDAY IN THE PROVINCE

JOURNAL?

THIS IS RIDICULOUS.

THEY DID THIS -- IT USED TO BE

THAT THERE WAS A NO CHARGE BUS

FARE FOR SENIORS AND HANDICAPPED

PEOPLE -- HANDICAPPED IS THE

WRONG WORD, RIGHT?

WHAT'S THE WORD?

THE DISABLED, WE MUST BE CORRECT

WHEN WE SAY THIS.

THE DISABLED AND SENIORS WERE

ABLE TO GET ON THE BUS FOR

NOTHING.

NOW THERE ARE HUNDREDS MISSING

ÃSCHEDULED SOUP

KITCHEN MEALS AND UNLIKE ACROSS

THE CITY BECAUSE PEOPLE DO NOT

HAVE THAT $.50? TO GET ON THE

BUS!

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY

THERE IS

PRESSURE TO MAKE A PROFIT ON THE

PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM.

NO PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM MAKES

MONEY.

YOU HAVE TO RUN EFFICIENTLY, IF

THERE IS WASTE AND FRAUD GET ON

IT, BUT JAMMING UP THE PEOPLE

WHO CAN LEAST AFFORD TO BE

JAMMED UP IS COUNTERINTUITIVE TO

WHAT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

SYSTEM IS SUPPOSED TO BE.

THEY OUGHT TO THROW THIS IDEA

OUT AND GO BACK, MAKE SURE THOSE

GETTING FREE RIGHTS ARE VERIFIED

TO DESERVE IT ANDRE UNDER THE

POVERTY LINE.

WHAT DO HAVE PUBLIC

TRANSPORTATION FOR?

ALL OF US WHO RUN AROUND IN OUR

CARS JAMMING UP THE HIGHWAYS

HAVE THIS NOSE IN THE AIR

DISPOSITION, THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS.

SPEAKING OF PROGRAMS, YOU GUYS

WILL CALL ME A BLEEDING HEART

LIBER BY THE TIME THIS SHOW IS

OVER.

LOOK AT THIS HEADLINE IN THE

PROVIDENCE JOURNAL -- I'M SORRY,

MONEY MAGAZINE.

THIS IS SOME RHETORIC COMING

FROM THE OFFICE OF MONEY AT THE

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION.

$3 BILLION

WOULD BE CUT FROM

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK

GRANTS THAT HELP FUND PROGRAMS

LIKE T WHEELS

NETWORK, WHICH RECEIVED OVER A

THIRD OF ITS FUNDING FROM THE

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

THE ORGANIZATION DEFENDED ITS

SERVICES SAYING, IT SERVES MEALS

TO TWO POINT 4 MILLION SENIORS

EACH YEAR, INCLUDING 500,000

VETERANS.

WE CAN'T DO THAT ANYMORE.

WE CANNOT SPEND MONEY ON

PROGRAMS BECAUSE THEY SOUND

GOOD.

MEALS AND WE'LL SOUNDS GREAT.

DAN: JUST MARKETING IT DONE.

YES, N PROFESSOR?

KALI: I HAVE CONDUCTED A NUMBER

OF STUDIES THAT DO SUGGEST THAT

MEALS ON WHEELS HAS A POSITIVE

IMPACT FOR CLIENTS AND THE STATE

IN FEDERAL BUDGET.

DAN: MEANING IT IS A RETURN ON

INVESTMENTS?

KALI: YES.

DAN: WE COME BACK, PROFESSOR

SHE MEANS.

IN THE MEANTIME, IF YOU ARE

THINKING THESE DAYS -- BANKING

THESE DAYS AND LOOKING FOR

SOPHISTICATION, NAVIGATE CREDIT

UNION HAS UPPED ITS GAME WITH

THE CARD VALET AT.

PUT IT ON YOUR PHONE, IT TELLS

YOU EVERYTHING GOING ON WITH

THAT DEBIT AND CREDIT CARD TO

THE POINT WHERE NO DETAIL IS

LEFT UNTURN FOR ALL OF YOUR

BANKING.

IN THE WORLD OF TRYING TO GET

MORE AND MORE SOPHISTICATED,

NAVIGATE CREDIT UNION PUTS ITS

NOSE UP FRONT WITH THIS

TECHNOLOGY.

CHECK IT OUT AT NAVIGATE CU.COM.

RIGHT BACK WITH PROFESSOR KALI

THOMAS ON WHYN WHEELS IS

A GOOD INVESTMENT.

DAN: HEREÁTHE

IMPACT OF MEALS ON WHEELS.

BEFORE HE COULD EVEN KNOCK,

79-YEAR-OLD BECKY YET HAD THE

HOME OPEN TO HER OLD TO GREATEST

SENATOR.

THE SENATOR HOME FROM WASHI3

DC, DELIVERED HER MEALS ON

WHEELS ON MONDAY.

THE PROGRAM HAS

BEEN AND THE

NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT AFTER THE

PRESIDENT'S ADMINISTRATION

ANNOUNCED THEIR PROPOSAL TO

INCREASE DEFENSE SPENDING AND

CUT OTHER PROGRAMS.

WE WILL MAKE SURE THE PROGRAM

STAYS, FOR YOU AND LOTS OF OTHER

PEOPLE.

THAT POTENTIALLY INCLUDES A

FUNDING SOURCE FOR MEALS ON

WHEELS.

MICK MULVANEY SAID WE HAVE TO

SHOW RESULTS.

WE CANNOT SPEND MONEY BECAUSE

-- ON PROGRAMS BECAUSE THEY

SOUND GOOD.

IT IS REALLY SIMPLE

, YOU

DELIVER A HOT MEAL AND GIVE A

VISIT TO A LONELY SENIOR.

THERE IS NO TRICK.

IT IS JUST TS WORTH

DOING.

IN RHODE ISLAND THE PROGRAM

DELIVERED MORE THAN 327 THOUSAND

MEALS AND A SAFETY CHECK.

YATES DID NOT KNOW SOMETHING SHE

CALLED, EVERYTHING TO HER, WAS

SUDDENLY THE CENTER OF A

POLITICAL FIGHT.

REALLY?

WE WILL BE HERE FOR YOU.

DAN: I DO NOT KNOW HOW THE

SENATOR FOUND THAT WOMAN, BUT

THEY ALWAYS FOUND -- TRY TO FIND

A WAY TO PERSONALIZE THE

CONTROVERSY.

PROFESSOR,

TELL ME THE RHETORIC

OUT OF THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION

IS A BLEEDER, RIGHT?

TO ME WHY IT IS NOT.

KALI: HOW TO START IN THE

BEGINNING, HOW WE CAM TO BE

SURE WITH A NUMBER OF HOME

DELIVERED MEALS?

2012, AS A HEALTH SERVICES

RESEARCHER, I HAVE LONG BEEN

INDUSTRY IN THIS TOPIC OF

NURSING -- NURSING HOME

RESIDENTS WHO SHOULD BE CARE FOR

IT.

WE HAVE LOTS OF RESEARCH ON

HOUSE SPENDING, MEDICAID

SERVICES AND ASSISTANT LIVING

RELATED TO THIS

POPULATION OF

LOW CARE RESIDENTS IN NURSING

HOMES.

WHAT IS NOT BEEN DOCUMENTED WAS

THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

AND SPENDING ON FOR BANDS LIKE

HOME DELIVERED MEALS AND ITS

RELATIONSHIP TO FLOW CARE

PRESIDENTS.

IN A PAPER PUBLISHED IN

TWO

THOUSAND 12 WITH MY COLLEAGUE,

WE EXAMINED STATE SPENDING ON

SOCIAL SERVICE PROGRAMS FUNDED

THIRD TITLE III OF THE OLDER

AMERICANS ACT.

WE FOUND THAT OVER A DECADE

,

THEY SPENT INCREASED SPENDING ON

THEIR HOME DELIVERED MEALS

PROGRAM, SOME REDUCTION IN THEIR

POPULATION OF LOW-CARE RESIDENCE

IN NURSING HOMES.

I CAN REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I

PRESENTED THESE RESULTS TO ONE

OF MY COLLEAGUES, SHE SCRATCHED

HER HEAD AND LOOKED AT ME AND

SAID, I DO NOT GET IT.

HOW ARE MEALS KEEPING OLDER

ADULTS OUT OF NURSING HOMES?

HAVING ACTUALLY BEEN A MEALS ON

WHEELS VOLUNTEER

AND THE GRANTED

-- GRANDDAUGHTER OF A CLIENT I

SAID, THE MEALS PROVIDED, THE

SERVICES THROUGH THIS PROGRAM,

MORE THAN JUST MALES.

AS WAS MENTIONED IN THE NEWS

CLIP, THE VOLUNTEERS WHO DELIVER

MEALS CHECK ON CLIENTS, REPORT

CHANGES THEY SEEK.

THEY CONDUCT SAFETY CHECKS AND

ANY UNANSWERED DELIVERY GOES --

IS FOLLOWED UP ON AND

INVESTIGATED.

DAN: WHY WOULD ANYBODY WITH HALF

A BRAIN ACTUALLY -- LOOK

, I'D

ASK YOU TO PROVIDE THE DATA TO

SUPPORT YO THESIS

, BUT I

WOULDN'T QUESTION THE COMMON

SENSE NATU IT.

SO WHOEVER -- YOU ARE SPEAKING

TO GOING, OH MY GOSH, WON'T KNOW

BLANK, SHERLOCK -- NO BLANK,

SHERLOCK!IF SOMEONE IS ELDERLY AND ALONE

GIVEN INTERACTION AND NUTRITION,

THOSE ARE TWO KEY ELEMENTS TO

THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE, AND MOST

PEOPLE WANT TO STAY IN THEIR

HOMES.

PROFESSOR KALI THOMAS: THAT IS

TRUE.

DAN: SO... YOU MAKE PERFECT

SENSE.

YOU JUST HAVE TO DO THE

RESEARCH.

PROFESSOR KALI THOMAS: EXACTLY.

DAN: THE RESEARCH SAYS WAS --

WHAT?

PROFESS KALI THOMAS: AND THE

FOLLOW-UP STUDY WE CONDUCTED, WE

ESTIMATED THAT STATES IF THEY

WERE TO INCREASE THE POPULATION

-- THEY ACTUALLY HAVE THE

POTENTIAL TO RECOGNIZE SAVINGS

TO THEIR STATE BUDGET THROUGH

KEEPING THESE LOW CARE RESIDENTS

OUT OF NURSING HOMES.

SO WE ESTIMATED THAT

A 1%

ACROSS-THE-BOARD EXPANSION AND

THE PROGRAM WOULD HAVE EQUATED

TO OVER ABOUT, $109

MILLION IN

SAVINGS TO MEDICAID PROGRAMS.

DAN: PUSH THE 1% EQUIVALENT TO,

LIKE IN RHODE ISLAND, DO WE KNOW

WHAT THAT?

PROFESSOR KALI THOMAS: 1500

ADDITIONAL OLDER ADULTS WOULD

RECEIVE HOME DELIVERED MEALS.

DAN: WHAT IS THE CASH EXPENSE

ATTRIBUTED TO THAT, DO WE KNOW?

PROFESSOR KALI THOMAS: WE

UTILIZE THE AVERAGE COST PER

MEAL.

DAN: WITCHES?

-- I BELIEVE IT'S SEVEN DOLLARS

BUT IT VARIES AND YOUWHICH IS?

PROFESSOR KALI THOMAS: DAN:

OF

POTENTIAL SAVINGS IN RHODE

ISLAND?

PROFESSOR KALI THOMAS: THAT'S

ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

RHODE ISLAND, OUR ESTIMATES

SUGGEST THAT AN ADDITIONAL 5000

MEALS THAT WERE SERVED TO OLDER

RHODE ISLANDERS WOULD HAVE

EQUATED TO ABOUT $100,000 IN

SAVINGS FOR THE STATE BUDGET.

DAN: NET?

PROFESSOR THOMAS: NET.

THIS WOULD BE FOR INCREASING

SPENDING ON THESE MEALS, AND A

1% ACROSS-THE-BOARD EXPANSION.

A FEDERAL REGULATION THAT THESE

MEALS WOULD BE TARGETED TO THOSE

--

DAN: MEALS ON WHEELS IS AN

EXCLUSIVELY FEDERALLY FUNDED

PROGRAM?

PROFESSOR THOMAS: IT'S ABOUT

30-35% THE BUDGET FOR MEALS

ON WHEELS

, THROUGH TITLE III

FUNDING FOR THE OLDER AMERICANS

ACT.

DAN: RIGHT.

SO IF THEY KNOCK IT OUT WHICH I

DOUBT THEY WILL, BUT IF CONGRESS

GETS A HOLD OF THIS IT IS A

TOUGH ONE, RIGHT?

MEALS ON WHEELS IS A POPULAR

PROGRAM.

BUT,

EVEN ON THE STATE SIDE, A

STATE MIGHT HAVE TO BE PICKING

UP THE BUNCH OF STUFF.

THE HEALTH-CARE INITIATIVE WENT

SPLAT ON FRIDAY, BUT THERE IS

NEAR $100 MILLION FOR MEDICAID

-- WHEN IT COMES TO THE STATE OF

RHODE ISLAND.

WE'LL HAVE A HEAVY CONVERSATION

AS TO WHETHER OR NOT WE WANT TO

FILL THAT VOID AS THE OTHER

STATES WILL HAVE TO.

SAME WITH THIS PROGRAM IT SEEMS

TO ME.

IF THERE IS A NET SAVINGS, HOW

CAN YOU NOT?

WHEN WE COME BACK, WE'LL SEE IF

THE PROFESSOR'S RESEARCH IS

DAN: YOU ARE TELLING ME THAT THE

MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM NOT ONLY

PAYS FOR ITSELF, BUT ACTUALLY

CUTS THE CASH FLOW EXPENSE FOR

NURSING HOME AIDE?

PROFESSOR THOMAS: THAT IS WHAT

OUR RESEARCH SAYS.

DAN: WHAT OTHER KINDS OF DATA DO

WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS?

I THINK MOST PEOPLE JUST

THINK,

IT IS A THING WE DO, AND VAPOR,

IN TERMS OF THE CALCULATION ARE

RETURNED, RIGHT -- RETURN.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD WE KNOW?

PROFESSOR THOMAS: ADDITIONAL

WORK WE HAVE DONE SUGGESTS THAT

IT HAS OUTCOMES THAT ARE

DIRECTLY RELATED TO HEALTH CARE

EXPENDITURES, AS WELL AS THE

QUALITY OF LIFE AND WELL-BEING.

IN A STUDY WE RECENTLY COMPLETED

WITH MEALS ON WHEELS AMERICA, A

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL,

CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST

RIGOROUS TYPES OF RESEARCH AND

EVALUATIONS FOR PROGRAMS, WE

FOUND THAT INDIVIDUALS WHO

RECEIVE DAILY DELIVERED MEALS OR

WEEKLY DELIVERED MEALS HAVE

REDUCTIONS IN THEIR FEELINGS OF

LONELINESS.

THOSE WHO HAD DAILY VISITS FROM

THEIR MEAL DELIVERY DRIVER HAD

INCREASED RATES OF REDUCTIONS IN

THEIR LONELINESS.

THIS SOMETHING NICE

, WARM AND

FUZZY OUTCOME, BUT IT HAS BEEN

DIRECTLY LINKED TO HEALTH AND

MORTALITY.

IN A RECENT STUDY, IT WAS

ESTIMATED THAT OLDER ADULTS WHO

WERE LONELY WERE TWO TIMES AT

RISK OF PREMATURE MORTALITY

,

COMPARED TO OLDER ADULTS WHO

WERE OBESE OR SMOKING.

IN OTHER WORDS, BEING LONELY IS

MORE DANGEROUS FOR YOUR HEALTH

THAN SMOKING OR BEING

OVERWEIGHT.

WE ALSO FOUND IN THE SAME STUDY

THAT PARTICIPANTS WHO RECEIVED

HOME DELIVERED MEALS WERE AT

DECREASED RATES OF FALLING

DURING THE STUDY.

Y PERIOD.

FALLS AS A PUBLIC HEALTH

CONCERN, THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF

BOTH FATAL AND NON-FATAL

INJURIES AMONGST OLDER ADULTS.

AND 2014, IT WAS ESTIMATED TO

COST THE MEDICARE PROGRAM $31

BILLION.

DAN: I DO NOT THINK THAT DATA

HAS RESONATED AMONGST THE

POPULATION, THAT FALLS, THE

SENIOR POPULATION CERTAINLY

KNOWS, THOSE TAKING CARE OF MOM

AND DAD KNOW, BUT DOES SHE SEE A

COUPLE INFOMERCIALS EVERY ONCE

AND A WHILE, REGARDING SENIORS

FALLING DOWN, MEDICAL ALERT

SOUNDERS AND PEOPLE FALLING

DOWN.

THIS IS INFORMATION THAT I THINK

NEEDS MORE EXPOSURE.

, ALLAH YOU BEING HERE.

IT'S INTERESTING, THERE ARE SO

MANY ARGUMENTS FOR SOCIAL

SERVICES AND THE SUPPORT OF

SOCIAL SERVICES, IT'S HARD FOR

PEOPLE LIKE ME TO BREAK THIS

STUFF DOWN.

FOR EVERYDAY PEOPLE WHO VOTE AND

HAVE A THOUGHT ON TAXATION AND

BUDGETARY SPENDING, WHAT IS

REALLY THE THING THAT RETURNS

INVESTMENT, SAVES OTHER KINDS OF

COSTS, OR IS A THROWAWAY PROGRAM

WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE?

IT'S HARD ACROSS THE

SPECTRUM OF

SOCIAL SERVICE TO FIGURE OUT

WHICH KEEPS THESE SOCIAL SERVICE

-- AND THE SOCIAL SERVICE

INDUSTRY BUSY FOR THE SAKE OF

IT, AND WHAT ACTUALLY MEANS

SOMETHING, RIGHT?

PROFESSOR THOMAS: CORRECT.

I WILL SAY THAT OUR RESEARCH

SUGGESTS THAT THE FEDERAL

CONTRIBUTIONS TO MEALS ON WHEELS

GIVES THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT A

GOOD DEAL.

30% OF FUNDS THAT ARE PROVIDED

TO MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAMS COME

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

60% ARE REQUIRED TO BE MATCHED

BY STATES.

THESE PROGRAMS ARE ALSO FUNDED

FOOD -- IT'S HER VOLUNTEERS

DELIVERING MEALS IN HELPING IN

THE KITCHEN, THE OFFICE FREE OF

CHARGE.

OUR RESEARCH SUGGESTS

THAT THE

OUTCOME FROM THESE PROGRAMS CAN

POTENTIALLY REDUCE HEALTH CARE

COSTS AS WELL AS ADVERSE

HEALTH

PROBLEMS DIRECTLY RELATE --

RELATED TO THESE COSTS.

DAN: WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO GET

TRACTION ON THESE ARGUMENTS?

WHAT IS THE PR PLAY?

PROFESSOR THOMAS: WE HAVE BEEN

DISSEMINATING THESE RESULTS TO

-- WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE

MEDIA TEAM, FOR UNIVERSITIES AND

MEALS ON WHEELS AMERICA, THE

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR HOME

DELIVERED MEALS PROGRAM.

AND GETTING THE WORD OUT THERE,

SPEAKING TO POLICYMAKERS, COMING

ON SHOWS LIKE YOURS, SHARING

THIS WORK.

DAN: I WONDER WHAT -- WHETHER WE

WILL GET INTO A BIG CONVERSATION

IN AMERICA WITH POTENTIAL

SIGNIFICANT CUPS COMING DOWN

FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT,

STATES HAVING TO MAKE -- CUTS

COMING DOWN FROM THE FEDERAL

GOVERNMENT, STATES HAVING TO

MAKE DECISIONS TO SUSTAIN

THINGS

THAT ARE PARTIALLY OR FULLY

FEDERALLY FUNDED.

IT WILL BE AN INTERESTING 3-4

YEARS.

PROFESSOR THOMAS: IT WILL BE

INDEED.

DAN: HOW MANY STATE HEARINGS DO

YOU THINK YOU WILL ATTEND?

YOUR INPUT WILL BE VALUED.

YOU WILL BE UP AT SMITH HILL,

ARGUING HIS POINTS?

DAPROFESSOR THOMAS: TO THE EXTENT

THAT THE -- THESE WILL BE

HELPFUL, ABSOLUTELY.

THAT'S SOMETHING WE HAVE BEEN

INVOLVED WITH IN THE PAST, THE

STATE OF RHODE ISLAND, THE

PROGRAM HERE WAS TRYING TO GET

ITS FUNDING RESTORED TO WHAT IT

WAS IN 2008.

THANKFULLY IN THE LAST YEAR OR

TWO, FUNDING HAS REGAINED TO THE

LEVELS IT WAS ALMOST DECADE -- A

DECADE AGO.

WE'RE STILL NOT PAYING THE

PRICES, AND THE NEED HAS

INCREASED.

DAN: WE WILL HAVE TO THROUGHOUT

THE CONCEPT OF MEALS -- THROW

OUT THE CONCEPT OF MEALS ON

WHEELS -- IT IS A HOT BUTTON.

FOR PEOPLE WHO KNOW AND LOVE IT

THEY WILL FIGHT FOR IT, WE WILL

SEE HOW IT GOES.

WE WILL HAVE YOU BACK AS THE

ARGUMENT CONTINUES.

THANK YOU, PROFESSOR.

DAN: IT'S A STRUGGLE TO FIGURE

OUT WHAT IS A WASTED GOVERNMENT

PROGRAM, AND THAT WHICH IS A

RETURN ON INVESTMENT.

MY GUESS IS -- I GO ON THE RADIO

AND ASK YOU ABOUT CUTTING MEALS

ON WHEELS, THAT THE YOU KNOW

WHAT WILL HIT THE PROVERBIAL FAN

.

I THINK.

WE WILL TEST IT.

THANKS FOR TUNING IN.

WE WILL SEE YOU HERE TOMORROW

NIGHT.

Snapshot: Knives & Choreography in JULIUS CAESAR - Duration: 3:03.

Hi, I'm Jon Toppo. I am the Resident Fight Director of

the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We are now

in the rehearsal center just about to go in

for a rehearsal of Julius Caesar which I

choreographed the fights for with the

choreographer, movement coordinator, Erika Chong Shuch.

I'm going to introduce you to Erika. Over

here,

the actors on a break, eating food and

tying his shoe. Stephen Michael Spencer, lovely actor.

Neck span!

She's on the phone! This is our movement director, she's on the

phone, I see. She's calling her agent, of course.

We're being interviewed. But you need to get off your phone.

Okay! That's it for now!

Thank you very much. I agree, I agree.

Well, hello! Good afternoon! Yes, there is violence in

Julius Caesar. My job is to build the

language of the violence then what we

would call the knife kata, which

is a series of knife moves and then a

series of grappling moves which we will

call the tie clinch, and once I built

the vocabulary or wrote the alphabet,

Erika then was able to use her movement

skills to put into a stylized moving

form and actually take the

vocabulary and make it more

movement oriented as opposed to

realistic violence.

There's the killing of Cinna the

poet, and the killing of Cinna the

poet is actually where we're moving into a more

stylized violence

and I think we'll leave that as a surprise

for you,

how we kill him. The most realistic

fight or violence is the assassination of

Julius Caesar. He was stabbed 32 times. He was stabbed

with knives and a little

behind-the-scenes is that they use blood packs and

it's really just Saran Wrap with blood in it,

tied up tight like blood balls, as it were,

and the actors palm them, and as they stab him, they

squeeze them and the blood bursts onto

Caesar's costume. Then he gets on the floor

and then in our second act there are the battle scenes

which we start to move more towards

movement violence, stylized violence and

that's where Erika and I worked hand-in-hand.

And what was so great about this Julius Caesar, I think

is Shana Cooper's take on it--her idea

of the cycle of violence. It's modern, and

I think what really makes it special is

that a lot of the movement and a lot of

the ideas or physical gestures were

generated by the actors, kind of molded

by themselves and also by the movement

choreographer Erika and mostly by the Director, Shana.

So you're actually going to see a very

organic Julius Caesar, very

individual to this cast that you would

never see with another cast.

SCC TechTalks 2017 Speakers Roberto Gudino, Brandon Burchard and Collin O'Brien - Duration: 25:29.

SO WE GOT TO HEAR A LITTLE EARLIER ABOUT PERSONALIZED

LEARNING FROM TODD AND NOW WE HAVE GOT TO LEARN A LOT

MORE ABOUT PERSONALIZED LEARNING.

AND IT'S ALMOST LIKE ANOTHER -- IT'S A WAY FOR

STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO REALLY GET WHAT THEY NEED

FROM THEIR INSTRUCTION, AND IT'S A WAY ALSO FOR US

AS FACULTY TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THAT TO THEM AS WELL.

WELL, WE'VE HAD A VERY EXCITING MORNING HAVEN'T WE HAVE.

WE'VE LEARNED A LOT.

AND WE'RE AT OUR LAST TECH TALK.

AND WE HAVE TWO SPEAKERS HERE, AND ONE VIRTUALLY HERE.

ROBERTO GUDINO IS FILM FACULTY HERE AT THE

SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL OF FILM AND THEATER.

NOW, ROBERTO AT THE AGE OF JUST FOUR YEARS OLD WAS

GIVEN HIS FIRST CAMERA.

IT WAS A LITTLE PLASTIC CAMERA THAT HE HAD TO BEG HIS MOM FOR.

AND AFTER A WHILE OF GOING TO THE STORE CONTINUOUSLY,

SHE FINALLY GAVE IN AND GOT HIM A LITTLE PLASTIC

CAMERA, NOT REALIZING WHAT THAT CAMERA WOULD DO FOR

ROBERTO'S FUTURE. HE STARTED TAKING PICTURES.

AND AS HE CONTINUED TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS, HE

LEARNED A LOT ABOUT FRAMING AND LIGHTING AND

COMPOSURE OF THOSE PHOTOGRAPHS.

AND AS HE TOOK MORE PHOTOS, HE IS GOT MORE

INVESTED IN -- IN THE FIELD OF PHOTOGRAPHY,

BECOMING A PHOTO JOURNALIST, WORKING FOR A NEWSPAPER

AND LEARNING MORE AND MORE ABOUT PHOTO JOURNALISM.

THEN HE SHIFTED AND HE STARTED WORKING IN FILM.

AND I ASKED ROBERTO WHAT HIS FAVORITE PART OF FILMMAKING IS.

AND HE SAID TO ME, "IT'S PAINTING WITH LIGHT." AND

I THOUGHT, "WOW, THAT'S PRETTY POWERFUL, THIS IDEA

OF FILM AND PAINTING WITH LIGHT." BRANDON BURCHARD

IS A STUDENT IN THE SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL OF FILM AND THEATER.

AND AS I MENTIONED AT THE BEGINNING, WE ALWAYS --

EVERYTHING AT SCC STARTS AND STOPS WITH STUDENTS,

BEGINNING AND ENDING WITH THEM.

AND BRANDON IS A STUDENT WHO'S BEEN WITH US AND IS

RIGHT IN THE FINAL PHASES OF HIS DEGREE.

BUT I ASKED HIM, "WELL, ARE YOU GRADUATING IN MAY?"

AND HE SAID, "I WANT TO GET AS MUCH AS I CAN

OUT OF THIS PROGRAM. I WANT TO TAKE EVERY COURSE I CAN AND

MAKE AS MANY CONTACTS AND NETWORK AS MUCH AS I CAN WHILE

I'M IN THE PROGRAM BEFORE I GRADUATE." SO HE'S LIKE,

"I'M KIND OF A SENIOR IN THE PROGRAM, BUT I WANT TO

GET AS MUCH AS I CAN OUT OF IT." AND, LIKE ROBERTO,

HIS FAVORITE PART OF FILMMAKING IS ALSO CINEMATOGRAPHY.

HE'S VERY CREATIVE, AND HE LIKES NOT ONLY FILMMAKING,

BUT HE ALSO PLAYS GUITAR AND DRUMS.

NOW, YOU DIDN'T KNOW WHEN YOU WERE COMING IN TODAY

THAT YOU WERE GOING TO BE AT THE WORLD PREMIER OF A FILM.

BUT BRANDON HAS BEEN -- AND COLLIN O'BRIEN, WHO IS

GOING TO BE WITH US VIRTUALLY, AND YOU'LL

LEARN MORE ABOUT COLLIN WHEN YOU SEE HIM.

BRANDON IS DOING HIS WORLD PREMIER OF HIS MUSIC VIDEO

THAT NOT ONLY DID HE CREATE THIS MUSIC VIDEO,

BUT HIS BAND ALSO PLAYED THE MUSIC.

SO DON'T GO ANYWHERE, BECAUSE THIS IS GOING TO

BE REALLY EXCITING.

AND IT'S SO -- I THINK IT'S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING

AND SO EXCITING THAT WE GET TO WITNESS THIS

EXPERIENCE WITH OUR STUDENTS.

AND SO I JUST CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU SEE IT, AND I

CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT TOO, BECAUSE I WANTED IT TO BE

WORLD PREMIER TOO EVEN THOUGH I COULD HAVE LOOKED AT IT.

SO PLEASE JOIN ME IN WELCOMING ROBERTO AND

BRANDON IN PERSON AND COLLIN VIRTUALLY.

THANK YOU FOR THE INTRODUCTION.

YOU'RE WELCOME.

IT ALL STARTED WITH A NEED.

SO WHEN I FIRST CAME TO SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY

COLLEGE FROM UCLA AND STARTED TEACHING MY CINEMATOGRAPHY

CLASSES, WHICH INVOLVED BOTH CAMERA AND LIGHTING.

I NOTICED THAT FILM STUDENTS REALLY HAD A NEED,

A NEED TO COLLABORATE, A NEED TO COLLABORATE

WITH STUDENTS FROM OTHER DEPARTMENTS

SUCH AS THEATER, STUDENTS FROM INTERIOR DESIGN.

SO BECAUSE OF THIS COLLABORATION, I THOUGHT,

"WELL, NOT ONLY DID THEY NEED COLLABORATION, BUT

WHEN I WAS ONSET WITH THEM, I NOTICED THAT THEY

HAD TO DO EVERYTHING, FROM SETTING UP FLATS, LIKE WE

COULD SEE HERE, TO FINDING WARDROBE TO FINDING ACTORS.

THEY HAD TO CAST FOR ACTORS.

THEY HAD TO FIND PROPS AND SET DRESSINGS." AND SO

BECAUSE OF THIS I THOUGHT, "WELL, THEY'RE NOT REALLY

DOING WHAT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO DO IN CLASS."

THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING CINEMATOGRAPHY,

WHICH IS, AGAIN, LIKE I MENTIONED, LIGHTING AND CAMERA.

SO I THOUGHT, "WELL, HOW CAN I GET THEM TO FOCUS ON

WHAT THE PURPOSE OF THE CLASS IS?"

AND I THOUGHT, "WELL, FOR ONE, I COULD GET THEM TO

COLLABORATE," BECAUSE I NOTICED SEVERAL TIMES THAT

YOU WOULD HAVE A SET SORT OF LIKE THIS WITH BARE

WALLS IN THE BACK -- THIS FILM, BY THE WAY, TURNED

OUT REALLY WELL.

BUT IT WAS VERY SPARSE, AS YOU COULD SEE.

THIS FLAT, IT WAS JUST PAINTED OVER, WITHOUT MUCH

SET DRESSING, WITHOUT PROPS OR ANYTHING ON THE WALL.

SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I FOUND HERE AT SCOTTSDALE

COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS THAT IT'S VERY COLLABORATIVE.

SO I THOUGHT, WELL, HOW CAN WE FIND THOSE

PARTNERSHIPS WITH VARIOUS DIFFERENT FACULTY MEMBERS

OR OTHER DEPARTMENTS.

SO ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE I SPOKE WITH IS AMANDA EMBRY.

SO SHE'S A CO-CHAIR OF THE SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL OF

FILM AND THEATER.

AND WHEN I HAD A CONVERSATION WITH HER SHE

SAID, "WELL, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE GREAT FRIENDS IN THE

INTERIOR DESIGN DEPARTMENT." SO WE STARTED

HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH RACHEL SIMMONS, WHO I MET

FROM THE NEW FACULTY EXPERIENCE.

AND FROM THERE WE ALSO INVITED CHUCK COOPER, ONE

OF THE DISTINGUISHED FACULTY MEMBERS HERE AT SCC.

WE ALL SAT TOGETHER AND BRAIN STORMED AND THOUGHT,

"HOW CAN WE CREATE THESE COLLABORATIONS

BETWEEN STUDENTS?"

SO ONE OF THE MAIN OBJECTIVES THAT WE FOUND

WAS TO CONNECT STUDENTS TO COLLABORATE.

SO BASED ON THOSE DISCUSSIONS THAT WE HAD,

WE THOUGHT, "WELL, GEOGRAPHICALLY WE'RE KIND

OF DISPERSED." SO WE HAVE THE FILM DEPARTMENT

TOWARDS THE NORTH END OF CAMPUS, THEN WE HAVE

INTERIOR DESIGN TOWARDS THE EAST SIDE OF CAMPUS,

AND THEN ALL THE WAY AT THE OTHER END OF CAMPUS,

WE HAVE THE THEATER DEPARTMENT.

SO WE'RE GEOGRAPHICALLY DISPERSED.

WE THOUGHT, "THERE'S GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY TO

CONNECT OUR STUDENTS." SO ONE OF THE MAJOR INSIGHTS

WE HAD WAS STUDENTS CREATES AND MAINTAIN

RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH TECHNOLOGY.

MUCH LIKE ANTHONY MENTIONED, A LOT OF THESE

INTERACTIONS, A LOT OF THESE COLLABORATIONS ARE

HAPPENING DIGITALLY.

SO WE KNEW WE WANTED TO BE IN THE DIGITAL REALM.

STUDENTS ARE CONNECTING ON INSTAGRAM.

STUDENTS ARE CONNECTING ON SNAPCHAT.

STUDENTS ARE CONNECTING ON TWITTER AND ALSO ON FACEBOOK.

AND ALSO, MUCH LIKE ANTHONY MENTIONED, THEY'RE

ON MOBILE, AS WE CAN SEE HERE.

SO, CLICKING BACK ONE, ONE OF THE MAIN MISSIONS WE

HAD WAS TO MEET STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE.

SO THIS WAS OUR MANTRA "MEET STUDENTS WHERE THEY

ARE." IN OTHER WORDS, BE WHERE THE AUDIENCE IS.

SO, AS EDUCATORS, WE VERY MUCH WANTED TO BE WHERE

THE AUDIENCE IS.

FROM THAT, FROM THE OBJECTIVE, FROM THE

MISSION, OUR BIG IDEA WAS TO CREATE A FACEBOOK PAGE

CALLED "THE COLLABORATION LINK." SO THIS IS WHAT THE

COLLABORATION LINK LOOKS LIKE.

IT'S A FACEBOOK PAGE WHERE STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO

INTERACT WITH ONE ANOTHER.

THEY'RE ABLE TO SEND DIRECT MESSAGES TO EACH OTHER.

SO THERE'S THAT INTERACTION.

THERE'S A 21ST CENTURY COMMUNICATION THAT ANTHONY

SPOKE ABOUT AND THAT WE ALL VERY MUCH NEED TO

INTEGRATE INTO THE CURRICULUM, 21ST CENTURY COMMUNICATION.

THAT TYPE OF COMMUNICATION NOT ONLY DO THEY NEED IT

NOW, BUT STUDENTS WILL ALSO NEED THAT IN THE FUTURE;

NOT ONLY THAT, BUT FACEBOOK IS ALSO A FREE CHANNEL.

IT'S A FREE PLATFORM.

WE DON'T NEED A BIG BUDGET.

WE DON'T NEED ANY BUDGET, REALLY, TO USE FACEBOOK.

ALSO NETACA, AS YOU COULD SEE HERE, WE'RE MAKING A

POINT OF GUIDING STUDENTS ON HOW TO USE THIS CHANNEL

TO COMMUNICATE WITH ONE OF THE, SO SETTING THOSE GUIDELINES.

ALSO, WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE MOBILE FRIENDLY.

AND, AS WE KNOW, FACEBOOK IS MOBILE FRIENDLY.

SO STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO GET ON THEIR PHONE.

THEY'RE ABLE TO DM OR POST THEIR PROJECTS ONTO THE

COLLABORATION LINK.

SO, REALLY, THE WAY IT WORKS IS THE FILM STUDENT

WOULD TAKE WHAT WE CALL A "LOOK BOOK," A COLLECTION

OF FIVE DIFFERENT IMAGES, POST THEM ON FACEBOOK, ON

THE COLLABORATION LINK, ADD THEIR SCRIPT, AND

BASICALLY PITCH THEIR PROJECT TO COLLABORATORS

ACROSS CAMPUS, BE IT A PRODUCTION DESIGNER FROM

THE THEATER DEPARTMENT, BE IT AN INTERIOR DESIGNER

FROM THE INTERIOR DESIGN DEPARTMENT, BE IT AN

EDITOR FROM THE SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL OF FILM AND THEATER.

SO IT'S A BUILT-IN CHANNEL WHERE PEOPLE COULD COMMUNICATE.

AND IT WAS A MOST APPROPRIATE CHANNEL FOR US

TO USE BASED ON OUR NEEDS.

HERE WE COULD SEE COLETTE.

SHE'S REACHING OUT TO A DESIGNER. SO THE INTERACTION

HAPPENS BETWEEN BOTH FILMMAKER AND DESIGN STUDENT.

NOT ONLY IS IT A ONE-WAY STREET THOUGH.

WE WANT THIS COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION TO

HAPPEN ACROSS DEPARTMENTS.

SO WE HAVE A STUDENT HERE IN CHAD WHO'S INTERESTED

IN PRODUCTION DESIGN REACHING OUT TO FILM

STUDENTS, BECAUSE HE KNEW THAT HE COULD USE THIS

CHANNEL TO HELP BUILD HIS OWN PORTFOLIO OF WORK.

AND THAT WAS THE MAJOR OUTCOME WE WANTED FOR THE

STUDENTS TO REALIZE.

YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

YOU COULD CREATE A GREAT REEL, WHICH IS REALLY YOUR

CALLING CARD AS A FILMMAKER.

YOU CAN ALSO DO INTERIOR DESIGN.

AND THOSE PHOTOS, YOU COULD USE FOR YOUR

PORTFOLIO, ALSO FOR YOUR CAREER.

SOMETHING INTERESTING, WE FOUND -- IT WAS A GREAT

SURPRISE TO FIND AS WELL -- FACULTY MEMBERS STARTED

USING THE COLLABORATION LINK.

SO WE DIDN'T EXPECT FACULTY MEMBERS TO USE IT,

AND IT WAS A SUCH A WELCOME SURPRISE.

DANIELLE STALLINGS, ANOTHER FACULTY MEMBER

FROM THE SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL OF FILM AND THEATER, SHE

USED IT TO LOOK FOR AND CAST ACTORS FOR SOME OF

HER SHORT FILMS IN HER 135 CLASS, IN PRODUCTION.

SO ALL OF THESE COLLABORATIONS WERE

HAPPENING ORGANICALLY.

THIS WASN'T ADDITIONAL WORK PUT ON ME OR ANYONE

ELSE REALLY IN THE DEPARTMENT.

AS THEY SAY, WE JUST BASICALLY BUILT IT AND THEY CAME.

SO SPEAKING ABOUT COLLABORATION, I'M GOING

TO LET BRANDON SPEAK ABOUT THE COLLABORATION

HE HAD WITH COLLIN.

ALL RIGHT.

SO THE COLLABORATION LINK FROM THE STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE,

THAT WOULD BE ME, THE STUDENT -- PLEASE FORGIVE ME.

I'M NOT A PUBLIC SPEAKER, SO BEAR WITH ME.

BUT I FIRST HEARD ABOUT THE LINK WHEN ROBERTO

SHARED IT WITH OUR CLASS.

HE SAID HE WAS WORKING ON IT, ASKED US KIND OF HOW

WE FELT ABOUT IT.

AND, TO ME, IT SOUNDED LIKE A WONDERFUL IDEA.

WITH SO MANY GREAT STUDENTS HERE AT THE FILM

SCHOOL AND THE THEATER DEPARTMENT AT SCC.

IT'S A GREAT WAY TO BRING THEM CLOSER AND ALLOW THEM

THE ABILITY TO WORK TOGETHER.

SO WHAT HE HAD US DO WAS HE HAD US POST OUR PROJECT

IDEAS ON THE PAGE, ASKING IF ANYBODY ELSE WANTED TO

HELP OUT WITH WHATEVER IT WAS WE NEEDED; LIKE HE

SAID, FROM DIRECTING TO PRODUCING TO ACTING, ET CETERA.

NOW, WHEN I FIRST MADE MY POST, I HONESTLY THOUGHT

THAT I HAD EVERYTHING I NEEDED ALREADY.

SO I DIDN'T THINK MUCH WOULD ACTUALLY COME OF IT.

I JUST KIND OF DID IT BECAUSE WE HAD TO.

BUT AS THE DATE OF MY SHOOT APPROACHED, I

ACTUALLY WAS CONTACTED BY A FELLOW STUDENT OF MINE.

HE BASICALLY SAID, "I LIKE YOUR STYLE, AND I WANT TO

WORK WITH YOU." AND THAT RIGHT THERE WAS PRETTY AWESOME.

I MEAN, TO HAVE A PEER OF MINE SAY THAT HE LIKES

WHAT I'M DOING, AND HE WANTS TO WORK WITH ME, HELL, YEAH.

THAT'S WHAT THIS BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT.

IT'S ABOUT NETWORKING AND MEETING FELLOW LIKE-MINDED

PEOPLE THAT YOU COULD COME TOGETHER WITH AND CREATE

SOMETHING THAT YOU'RE PROUD OF.

SO I CONTACTED HIM BACK, I SAID, "YEAH, I DO NEED

SOME HELP ON THE PRODUCTION SIDE.

AND I'VE I'D LOVE TO WORK WITH YOU." SO IT ENDED UP

BEING A TREMENDOUS HELP.

HE WAS ABLE TO GATHER A FEW THINGS WE NEEDED, DESIGN WISE.

HE SHOWED UP THE DAY OF THE SHOOT, PROVIDED OUR

CREW WITH CRAFTY, WHICH IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING.

HE EVEN STUCK AROUND SET AND GOT HIS HANDS DIRTY

DOING LITTLE GRIT WORK.

SO IT ENDED UP BEING A USEFUL TOOL.

AND IT GOT ME THINKING THAT THIS CONNECTION MAY

NOT HAVE EVER HAPPENED WITHOUT THE COLLABORATION LINK.

SO IT WAS DEFINITELY A GREAT TOOL TO HAVE.

NOW, UNFORTUNATELY, MY PRODUCER COLLIN, HE'S NOT

HERE WITH US TODAY.

HE'S ACTUALLY UP IN UTAH FOR THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL.

BUT HE WAS ABLE TO CREATE A LITTLE VIDEO FOR US,

KIND OF INTRODUCING HIMSELF AND SHARING HIS

SIDE OF THE STORY. SO HERE HE IS.

HI, EVERYONE MY NAME IS COLLIN O'BRIEN.

I'M OUT HERE IN UTAH AT THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL.

TO BEGIN, I MET BRANDON IN A PREVIOUS CLASS, WHERE I

SAW ONE OF HIS MUSIC VIDEOS.

I THOUGHT IT HAD GREAT CINEMATOGRAPHY, AND I

WANTED TO TRY AND WORK WITH HIM ON A FUTURE PROJECT.

THE NEXT SEMESTER, I MET WITH ROBERTO.

HE SAID HE CREATED A COLLABORATION LINK SO THAT

STUDENTS COULD GET IN TOUCH WITH EACH OTHER A

LITTLE EASIER ON FUTURE PROJECTS.

SO I WENT ONLINE AND SAW THAT BRANDON WAS ACTUALLY

CREATING ANOTHER MUSIC VIDEO THAT FOLLOWING SEMESTER.

SO I GOT IN TOUCH WITH HIM.

RIGHT AWAY, I ASKED, "HEY, DO YOU NEED A DIRECTOR?"

BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I'M FOCUSING ON.

AND HE SAID, "NO, I ALREADY HAVE ONE. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?

I DO NEED A PRODUCER. CAN YOU HELP?"

I SAID, "ABSOLUTELY.

I LOVE HELPING OUT." AND HE SAID, "WELL, WE NEED

SOME SET DRESSINGS." I SAID, "PERFECT. I KNOW WHERE TO GO."

HAVE SOME CONTACTS IN THE THEATER DEPARTMENT.

SO I WAS ABLE TO HELP OUT THERE.

THE DAY OF THE SHOOT, I WAS ABLE TO BRING CRAFTY,

WHICH IS FOOD FOR EVERYONE ONSET SO THEY STAY FULL

AND STAY HAPPY WHILE THEY WORK.

AND THEN DURING THE SHOOT I WAS ABLE TO HELP OUT IN

VARIOUS POSITIONS.

SO WE HAD A GREAT TIME, A LOT OF FUN.

WE GOT SOME GREAT SHOTS IN.

AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE FINAL PIECE.

AND I'M SURE THAT YOU'LL ALL ENJOY THE FINAL PIECE TOO.

SO TAKE CARE. ENJOY.

ALL RIGHT. SO THAT'S COLLIN.

SO LISA DID A REALLY GOOD JOB OF HYPING MY VIDEO UP.

I DO WANT TO FOREWARN.

IT'S JUST A CLIP. IT'S NOT THE ENTIRETY.

WE ARE IN THE EDITING PHASE STILL.

SO THIS IS A SMALL CLIP OF MY UPCOMING MUSIC VIDEO.

AND I DO HOPE YOU GUYS ENJOY.

(MUSIC PLAYING.)

LET'S HEAR IT. (CLAPPING.)

THANK YOU.

SO, REALLY, WHAT A CREATIVE MIND TO CREATE THIS.

SO, YES, I MEAN, MUCH DESERVED ROUND OF APPLAUSE

FOR BOTH BRANDON AND COLLIN.

THEY DID SUCH AN EXCELLENT JOB.

(CLAPPING.)

AND, LIKE LISA MENTIONED, IT IS ALL ABOUT STUDENT SUCCESS.

AND I THINK THAT SUCCESS IS REFLECTED NOT ONLY IN

BRANDON AND COLLIN, BUT ALL OF THE OTHER STUDENTS

IN OUR ADVANCE CINEMATOGRAPHY CLASS, AS

WELL AS MY OTHER CLASSES AND ALL OF YOUR CLASSES.

AND I THINK, FOR ME, WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS

EXPERIENCE WAS THAT, AGAIN, WE HAVE TO MEET

STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE.

BE IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS, BE IT ON

FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, TWITTER, SNAPCHAT,

WHATEVER OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNEL YOU CAN THINK OF.

BUT BEYOND THAT, I LEARNED THAT WE HAVE TO ALSO BE

HELPING STUDENTS LEARN AND KNOW HOW TO USE 21ST

CENTURY COMMUNICATION TOOLS NOW AND FOR THEIR

CAREERS IN THE FUTURE.

ANOTHER TAKE AWAY FOR ME AS WELL WAS THAT, THESE

SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE FACEBOOK.

IT DOESN'T JUST HAVE TO BE INSTAGRAM.

IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNEL.

IT COULD BE ANY OTHER DIGITAL CHANNEL OR

PLATFORM THAT YOU COULD THINK OF TO CONNECT WITH STUDENTS.

SO IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE SPECIFICALLY A SOCIAL

MEDIA; NOT ONLY THAT, IT COULD ALSO BE SOMETHING

THAT'S VERY LOW BUDGET, SOMETHING THAT'S ACCESSIBLE.

AS YOU CAN SEE HERE, WE HAD A BLAST ON THE SHOOT.

AND THAT'S BECAUSE WE WERE ABLE TO MEET STUDENTS WERE

WHERE THEY ARE.

AND I INVITE YOU TO ALSO MEET STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE.

AND AS LONG AS YOU AND I CONTINUE MEETING STUDENTS

WHERE THEY ARE, WE CAN SUCCESSFULLY MOVE FORWARD

INTO THE 21ST CENTURY.

THANK YOU.

GOOD JOB, SIR.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. FANTASTIC JOB.

THANK YOU.

LET'S HEAR IT AGAIN FOR OUR STUDENT'S WORK.

HOW ABOUT IT FOR BRANDON.

TODAY HAS BEEN ABOUT INSPIRATION, MOTIVATION,

TECHNOLOGY, EDUCATION, COLLABORATION.

THERE'S A LOT OF SHUNS INVOLVED TODAY.

BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT I'M JUST SO PROUD OF THE

WORK THAT WE DO HERE AT MARICOPA.

THE WORK THAT EVERY PERSON WHO WORKS HERE DOES TO

HELP CONNECT OUR STUDENTS AND HELP THEM BE

SUCCESSFUL, THE WORK OF OUR FACULTY, AND THE WORK

OF OUR STUDENTS.

WE GOT TO SEE MERRY AND SIAN'S STUDENT WORK.

WE GOT TO SEE BRANDON AND COLLIN'S WORK.

AND ALL THROUGHOUT THE MORNING WE GOT TO SEE THE

EXCEPTIONAL WORK OF OUR PERFORMING ART CENTER

STUDENTS AND TEAM.

AND SO PLEASE GIVE A HAND TO THE PAC.

(CLAPPING.)

SO I NEED TO REMIND YOU ABOUT FACULTY PROFESSIONAL GROWTH.

IF YOU'RE APPLYING FOR FACULTY PROFESSIONAL

GROWTH, WHEN WE'RE DONE, YOU MUST GO BACK

DOWNSTAIRS AND SIGN OUT.

AND, BY 12:30 TOMORROW, YOU NEED TO PLEASE

COMPLETE THE EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT.

DON'T LEAVE YET.

I'D LIKE TO PLEASE ASK THE ISTAC COMMITTEE TO JOIN

ME, BECAUSE THIS EVENT TODAY WAS ALL OF THEIR

WORK, AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, FROM REGISTRATION

TO HELPING THE FACULTY KNOW HOW TO -- I'M SORRY

-- THE SPEAKERS KNOW HOW MUCH TIME THEY HAD.

WE HAVE TIMERS.

WE HAVE PEOPLE BACKSTAGE.

WE HAVE PEOPLE WORKING WITH THE MICS AND ALL

SORTS OF AREAS AND THINGS.

SO PLEASE THE ISTAC TEAM, PLEASE JOIN ME ON STAGE

BECAUSE YOU'VE DONE SO MUCH WORK.

(CLAPPING.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US TODAY.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

Weekend Reflection - March 26, 2017 - Duration: 2:24.

- Hello, everyone, and welcome to our weekend reflection,

brought to you by Spirit Juice Studios.

This week, we focus upon the fourth Sunday of Lent

and we have the Gospel of John, chapter nine,

and the story of a man who was born blind,

and this man who was born blind interacts with Jesus

and this man is healed of his blindness.

He is brought from the darkness into the light

and the most important part of this is

that he accepts Jesus as the truth, as the Messiah,

but what happens immediately whenever he is able to see

and is rescued from the darkness,

he finds all kinds of opposition.

The Pharisees are questioning him,

but when this man stands firm and says, "I was blind

"and now I see, and I know that he comes from God,"

he acknowledges the truth of who he is.

He is cast out from their midst,

and then Jesus comforts him in that moment,

and I think that whole scene can be seen

as a metaphor for the Christian spiritual life,

that when we are brought from the darkness into the light,

you can count on there being opposition.

Remember that Jesus says in the Scriptures elsewhere,

in this world, you will have trials and tribulations,

but to be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.

It is better to be able to see and to be in the light

and experience the cross than to be

in the darkness and not be able to see.

The path that Jesus asks us to walk on is not easy

and we see that from the cross that our Lord

allowed himself to be nailed to for our salvation,

and that may seem intimidating and it may seem very scary,

and to be honest with you in my humanity,

it intimidates me as well.

The reality is that God gives us the grace,

his power from on high, to be able to walk that path,

and to really find true joy and to find true peace

in the midst of this life.

My brothers and sisters, as we continue to make our way

through this Lent season, let us strive

to live ever present in the light.

Let us seek to ask the Lord Jesus to remove the blinders

from our eyes so that we may see him better,

that we may see the truth and see the path

that we're called to follow.

SCC TechTalks 2017 Speakers Merry Wilson and Sian Proctor - Duration: 20:27.

CAN YOU IMAGINE THE POWER OF THESE FORMULAS AND THIS

RESEARCH THAT WE'RE ABLE TO DO AND THE IMPACT THAT

IT CAN HAVE ON OUR BEING ABLE TO DO OUR JOBS BETTER.

IT'S PRETTY MIND BLOWING.

SO OUR NEXT TALK IS BY TWO GEOLOGISTS,

DR. MERRY WILSON AND DR. SIAN PROCTOR.

MERRY IS FACULTY HERE AT SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY

COLLEGE, AND SIAN IS FACULTY AT SOUTH MOUNTAIN

COMMUNITY COLLEGE. AND BASICALLY GEOLOGY ROCKS.

YOU MUST NOT TAKE IT FOR GRANITE.

(LAUGHING.)

THEY TAUGHT ME THAT. I DIDN'T KNOW IF I COULD PULL IT OFF,

BUT YOU LAUGHED SO THAT'S AWESOME.

SO LET ME TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SIAN AND MERRY.

FIRST OF ALL, THEY ARE SUPER PASSIONATE INSTRUCTORS.

THEY SO TRULY AND DEEPLY CARE ABOUT THEIR STUDENTS.

AND THEY'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR BETTER WAYS TO

ENGAGE THEIR STUDENTS.

THEY'RE LOOKING THROUGH ASSESSMENT.

THEY'RE LOOKING THROUGH DELIVERY AND FINDING WAYS

TO ENGAGE STUDENTS AND TO BRING STUDENTS THE JOY OF GEOLOGY.

NOW, YOU MIGHT BE THE JOY OF GEOLOGY.

I LOVE GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY AND SCIENCES AND

SUCH, SO I SEE THAT JOY.

BUT THEY MAKE IT WHERE THEY CAN SEE GEOLOGY IN

EVERYTHING THEY DO.

ALSO, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I JUST LOVE ABOUT

SIAN AND MERRY IS THAT THEY ARE ALWAYS LEARNING

NEW THINGS, ALWAYS TAKING RISKS IN THE CLASSROOM.

TRYING NEW THINGS, TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE.

NOW, I COULD TALK ABOUT THESE WOMEN ALL DAY LONG,

BECAUSE THEY ARE MY REALLY GOOD FRIENDS, BUT I'M

GOING TO LET THEM TALK TO YOU.

SO PLEASE JOIN ME IN WELCOMING MY FRIENDS SIAN AND MERRY.

(CLAPPING.)

THANK YOU, LISA.

AND IT'S A REAL PLEASURE TO BE HERE TODAY WITH YOU.

I AM SIAN PROCTOR AND I TEACH GEOLOGY, PLANETARY

SCIENCE, AND SUSTAINABILITY AT SOUTH

MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

AND THIS IS MY G-O PARTNER IN CRIME MERRY.

HI, I'M MERRY WILSON.

I TEACH HERE AT SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

GO CHOKES!

OH, YEAH.

SIAN AND I TEACH VERY SIMILAR CONTENTS, SIMILAR CLASSES.

WE DO IT IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS.

WE TEACH SOME ONLINE, SOME HYBRID, SOME FACE-TO-FACE.

WE MIX AND MATCH.

WE TRY ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS.

AND THEN WE GET TOGETHER AND WE TALK ABOUT IT,

BECAUSE IT'S REALLY HARD TO LEARN IN A VACUUM.

SO IT'S NICE HAVING A BUDDY TO TALK TO.

AND I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE LIKE ME, BUT THIS IS THE

AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION PART OF THE SHOW.

WE GET ON OUR LITTLE SOAP BOX.

YOU KNOW, WE HOP UP THERE THE FIRST TIME WE SEE EACH

OTHER AFTER A LONG TIME, AND WE START BINGING ABOUT

EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING WRONG.

SO IN TERMS OF ONLINE LEARNING FOR OUR STUDENTS

AND FOR OURSELVES, WHAT DO YOU THINK OUR MAJOR COMPLAINTS ARE?

WHAT IS IT? THEY DON'T PARTICIPATE.

WHAT ELSE? LACK OF ENGAGEMENT.

WHAT ELSE? THEY DON'T DO THEIR HOMEWORK.

OH, MY GOODNESS. YEAH, ALL RIGHT.

SO YOU'RE WITH US HERE.

SO WE HAVE A LOT OF CHALLENGES, AND WE HAVE

SOME FROM OUR OWN PERSPECTIVE AS WELL.

AND SO WE STARTED REALLY THINKING ABOUT WHAT THOSE

CHALLENGES WERE.

AND THE FIRST WITH ONE WAS: HOW CAN WE INCREASE

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT?

WHEN WE LOOK AT STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, PART OF IT IS

THEM AND PART OF IT IS US. RIGHT?

WE'RE TRYING TO ENGAGE THEM.

WE'RE COMPLAINING THEY'RE NOT ENGAGED, BUT WE'RE

GIVING THEM A WORKSHEET AND IT'S BORING, RIGHT.

SO THE HOLY GRAIL OF ENGAGEMENT IS GOING TO

HIGH ATTENTION AND HIGH COMMITMENT ON THEIR PART

AND ALSO ON OURS. SO WE HAVE THAT GOAL.

WE IDENTIFIED ANOTHER ONE.

GUESS WHAT?

THESE ARE OUR FUTURE VOTERS.

THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE ENGAGING OUR COMMUNITIES.

THEY ARE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING ON.

AND WE WANT THEM TO UNDERSTAND GEOLOGY.

AND WE WANT THEM TO UNDERSTAND IT AS WELL AS

THEY CAN IN THE SINGLE SEMESTER THAT WE HAVE THEM.

WE WANT TO INCREASE THEIR ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE IN

A DIGITAL FORMAT.

I MEAN, SOMETIMES THE STUFF YOU GET IS CRAZY.

AND WE ALL KNOW WE HAVE DIFFERENT STUDENT POPULATIONS,

RIGHT. SOME OF THEM ARE INCREDIBLY DIGITALLY

LITERATE, BUT THAT DOES MEAN THEY ARE EFFECTIVE, RIGHT.

MY NINE-YEAR-OLD, REALLY DIGITALLY LITERATE, BUT YOU

SHOULD SEE THESE TEXT MESSAGES THAT SHE SENDS ME.

I'M LIKE, "YOU CAN'T SPEAK IN EMOJI, DARLING." BUT

THEN WE ALSO HAVE PEOPLE WHO HAVE MORE EFFECTIVE

COMMUNICATION SKILLS, BUT THEY DON'T HAVE THE

TECHNOLOGY BACKGROUND.

AND HOW DO WE BRING THEM ALL TOGETHER?

THEN WE HAVE SOME OTHER REALLY PRETTY SELFISH GOALS, RIGHT.

WE KNOW OUR STUDENTS CHEAT IN ONLINE PLATFORMS.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT?

HOW CAN I SAY I KNOW THAT?

BECAUSE I HAD A STUDENT WHO TOLD ME THAT WAS HER JOB.

THAT'S WHAT SHE DID.

SHE TOOK ONLINE CLASSES FOR OTHER PEOPLE.

OH, YEAH. SO WE STARTED HAVE HAVING THIS PANIC ATTACK.

LIKE, "WELL, HOW DO I KNOW?" BECAUSE WE ALWAYS HAVE THAT

CONVERSATION: HOW DO YOU KNOW THE STUDENT TAKING THE CLASS IS

THE STUDENT DOING THE WORK?

AND THEN, OF COURSE, THERE'S SORT OF THIS LAST

GOAL, WHICH IS COMPLETELY SELFISH.

GRADING ONLINE WORK...

IS TEDIOUS. IT IS HORRIBLE. IT'S BORING. IT'S MONOTONOUS.

IT'S ALL THE THINGS THEY HATE ABOUT ONLINE WORK.

SO WE HAD THESE GOALS.

AND THEN WE THOUGHT TO OURSELVES, "WHAT ARE WE

GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT?"

WELL LUCKILY, SIAN'S A GENIUS. SHE'S LIKE THE EVIL GENIUS.

I'M MORE OF THE BETO, BETO, MINION.

AND SHE CAME UP WITH A REALLY GREAT IDEA OF HOW WE CAN

COULD START TO POTENTIALLY IMPACT ALL OF THESE AREAS.

SO WE DID AN EXPLORATORY STUDY.

AND BY EXPLORATORY I MEAN JUST THAT.

WE JUST WANTED TO SEE WHAT WE COULD FIND AND SEE WHAT

WE COULD GET OUT OF THIS.

AND SO I'M GOING TO HAND IT BACK OVER.

SO WHAT IS A VIDEO INVESTIGATION AND HOW DO STUDENTS DO THEM?

SO HOW THEY DO THEM IS SIMPLE.

IF WE ARE ASKING THEM A QUESTION AND ASKING THEM

TO FILM THEMSELVES, THEN THEY JUST USE THEIR CELL

PHONE 90% OF THE TIME TO TAKE A VIDEO ANSWERING THAT QUESTION.

AND THEN I ASK THEM TO DROP THAT INTO THE DISCUSSION BOARD.

BUT, A LOT OF THE TIMES, I ACTUALLY ASK THEM TO DO

VOICED OVER SCREENCAST VIDEOS.

HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE GUYS HAVE DONE A SCREENCAST BEFORE?

SO YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

WELL, HAVING YOUR STUDENTS DO SCREENCAST IS A GREAT

WAY TO GET AT WHAT THEY'RE LEARNING.

SO I OFFER A FREE SOFTWARE CALLED SCREENCAST-O-MATIC

THAT THE STUDENTS CAN DOWNLOAD AND USE TO CREATE

THESE VOICED OVER VIDEOS.

BUT I DON'T LIMIT THEM TO THAT.

THEY CAN USE ANY SCREENCAST SOFTWARE OR

EVEN APP FOR THEIR PHONE AS LONG AS IT RECORDS IN

AN MP4 FORMAT FOR CANVAS.

AND THEN I ASK THEM TO EMBED IT INTO THE DISCUSSION BOARD.

SO INSTEAD OF HAVING THEM WRITING AN ESSAY ABOUT

SOMETHING, THEY CREATE A VOICED OVER SCREENCAST

VIDEO OR A VIDEO OF THEMSELVES, AND THEY POP

IT INTO THE DISCUSSION THREAD.

AND SO WHAT DO THESE VIDEO INVESTIGATIONS LOOK LIKE?

WELL, THEY'RE DESIGNED TO GET AT THE STUDENT'S

KNOWLEDGE OF A TOPIC.

AND SO, FOR EXAMPLE, HERE IS ONE IN WHICH THEY'RE

GOING TO TALK ABOUT PLATE TECTONICS.

AND WHEN I FIRST STARTED DOING VIDEO

INVESTIGATIONS, I DIDN'T GIVE THE STUDENTS A LOT OF

GUIDELINES ON WHAT I WANTED THEM TO DO.

I WOULD BASICALLY SAY TELL ME ABOUT -- PICK A PLATE

TECTONIC BOUNDARY AND TELL ME THE FEATURES ON IT.

WELL, I WOULD GET VIDEOS FROM 30 SECONDS TO 10 MINUTES

LONG, DEPENDING ON WHO THE STUDENT WAS.

SO NOW I DECIDED THAT WHAT WE NEEDED WAS A VERY -- WE

NEEDED TO GUIDE THE STUDENTS BETTER IN HOW

THEY'RE GOING TO DO THESE VIDEO INVESTIGATIONS, AND

HOW LONG THEY WERE GOING TO BE.

AND SO NOW THE STUDENTS DO EITHER A ONE-MINUTE,

TWO-MINUTE OR A FIVE-MINUTE VIDEO INVESTIGATION

ON A TOPIC THAT I WANT THEM TO BE

ABLE TO EXPRESS THEIR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT.

AND, FROM AN INSTRUCTOR STANDPOINT, YOU MIGHT BE

THINKING, "OH, I DON'T WANT TO TEACH MY STUDENTS

HOW TO DO A VIDEO OR A SCREENCAST." WE DON'T

TEACH THEM ANYTHING.

I CAN TELL YOU RIGHT NOW, WE JUST PUT THE ASSIGNMENT UP AND

THEY DO IT. THE VERY FIRST ASSIGNMENT THAT THEY DO IN MY

ONLINE CLASS IS THAT THEY HAVE TO INTRODUCE THEMSELVES TO

THE REST OF THE STUDENTS IN A VIDEO; TELL ME WHO

YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO, WHY YOU'RE TAKING THIS CLASS.

AND THEY DO IT. THEY DO IT ON THEIR PHONES.

THEY DO IT ON THEIR COMPUTERS. AND THEN FOR THE SCREENCAST AND

SCREENCAST-O-MATIC, AGAIN, I DON'T TEACH THEM.

99% OF OUR STUDENTS COME IN AND THEY FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO IT.

SO DO YOU WANT TO SEE A SCREENCAST?

OKAY. LET'S WATCH THIS ONE.

HEY, GUYS THIS IS JARED WILSON FOR DR. PROCTOR'S

GEOLOGY 110 COURSE AND I'D LIKE TO TALK TO YOU GUYS

TODAY ABOUT CONVERGING BOUNDARIES.

HERE WE HAVE AN OCEAN TO CONTINENT CONVERGENT BOUNDARY.

YOU HAVE YOUR OCEANIC PLATE HERE AND YOUR CONTINENTAL PLATE HERE.

THE TWO PLATES ARE GOING TO COME AT EACH OTHER.

AND, AT THE POINT OF COLLISION, THE OCEANIC

PLATE DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT'S MADE OF MORE DENSE MATERIALS

IS GOING TO SUBDUCT UNDERNEATH THE CONTINENTAL PLATE.

WHEN THE PLATE SUBDUCTS, IT'S GOING TO CREATE

COMPRESSIONAL STRESS.

IT'S ALSO GOING TO CREATE THE OCEANIC TRENCH.

AND HERE YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE YOUR ACCRETIONARY WEDGE AS WELL.

THE DIFFERENT FEATURES THAT COULD BE CREATED AT A

CONVERGENT BOUNDARY INCLUDE MOUNTAINS AND VOLCANOS.

A LOT OF GREAT MOUNTAIN RANGES AROUND THE WORLD

HAVE BEEN CREATED BY CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES,

INCLUDING THE ANDES, WHICH WE'LL GET TO SHORTLY.

SO, YEAH, YOU CAN GET VOLCANOS THAT'S CONVERGING BOUNDARIES.

THE EARTHQUAKES, THEY CAN OCCUR ALONG THE TRENCH, ON

SURFACE, AND INTO THE EARTH'S MANTLE AS THE

OCEANIC PLATE CONTINUES TO SUBDUCT.

THE VOLCANOS ARE CAUSED BY MATERIALS BEING CARRIED

DOWN INTO THE EARTH AND THEN MELTING.

THE MELTING RESULTS IN MAGMA.

THE MAGMA IS LESS DENSE THAN THE ROCKS AROUND IT, SO IT RISES UP.

IT WILL POOL HERE IN DIFFERENT LITTLE MAGMA

CHAMBERS AND THEN FIND ITS WAY TO THE SURFACE WHERE IT ERUPTS.

SO YOU'LL DEFINITELY HAVE SOME VOLCANOS HERE.

AND THE REAL WORLD EXAMPLE I'D LIKE TO PROVIDE FOR

YOU IS SOUTH AMERICA HERE.

YOU HAVE YOUR NAZCA PLATE OVER HERE AND THE SOUTH

AMERICAN PLATE OVER HERE.

YOU CAN SEE THE OCEANIC TRENCH OR THE BOUNDARY, IF

YOU'D LIKE TO CALL IT THAT.

THE ANDES MOUNTAINS ARE GOING TO BE WHERE CREATED RIGHT

OVER HERE. SO THIS PLATE IS GOING TO SUBDUCT UNDERNEATH THE

SOUTH AMERICAN PLATE. THE NAZCA PLATE IS GOING TO

SUBDUCT UNDERNEATH THE SOUTH AMERICAN PLATE.

AND THE SOUTH AMERICAN PLATE IS GOING TO BE THE

OVERRIDING PLATE.

AND, AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, THE ANDES

MOUNTAINS HAVE BEEN CREATED DUE TO THIS CONVERGING BOUNDARY.

ANYWAY, I WANT TO THANK YOU GUYS VERY MUCH FOR WATCHING.

AND I HOPE YOU GUYS HAVE A GREAT REST OF YOUR DAY.

SO THAT WAS AN EXAMPLE -- RIGHT. RIGHT.

(CLAPPING.) YEAH.

SO THAT WAS AN EXAMPLE OF A TWO-MINUTE VIDEO

INVESTIGATION ON PLATE TECTONIC.

AND ALL I DID WAS I TOLD THEM THAT THEY GOT TO

CHOOSE BETWEEN THE THREE TYPES OF PLATE BOUNDARIES --

SO GIVING THEM OPTIONS -- AND THEY HAVE TO

EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENS AT THAT PLATE BOUNDARY.

AND THEN YOU HAVE TO FIND A REAL WORLD EXAMPLE OF

THAT PLATE BOUNDARY. AND THAT'S WHAT HE PUT TOGETHER.

AND WHAT'S INTERESTING IS THAT BECAUSE THE STUDENTS ARE

GIVEN CHOICES, ALL THE VIDEOS ARE DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER.

AND IT'S AMAZING TO SEE WHAT THEY COME UP WITH.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I LOVE ABOUT DOING THESE

VIDEO INVESTIGATIONS, AND I WILL SAY THAT MY

STUDENTS DO -- I TEACH ONLINE.

MY STUDENTS DO AN VIDEO INVESTIGATION EVERY SINGLE WEEK.

AND I KNOW THAT'S JARED. I KNOW HIS VOICE.

I KNOW WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE.

I HAVE A VERY PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH HIM

BECAUSE OF THESE VIDEO INVESTIGATIONS.

AND WHEN THEY COME TO CAMPUS, THEY SEE ME, THEY'RE LIKE,

"HEY, DR. PROCTOR," BECAUSE THEY KNOW ME TOO.

AND I'M LIKE, "OH, JARED. HEY, HOW'S IT GOING?"

BECAUSE WE'VE MADE THAT PERSONAL CONNECTION.

AND AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER, I LIKE TO TRY

AND GET MY ONLINE STUDENTS TO COME TO CAMPUS AND WE

CELEBRATE WHAT WE'VE DONE OVER THE SEMESTER.

AND YOU SHOULD SEE THE INTERACTION, BECAUSE THEY

KNOW EACH OTHER FROM THE VIDEOS.

THEY'RE LIKE, "HEY, HOW'S IT GOING?"

AND THEY ALREADY KNOW EACH OTHER IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD.

ALSO, THE CREATIVITY, THEY WILL BRING IN FAMILY MEMBERS.

THEY WILL BRING IN PROPS. THEY WILL TAKE VIDEO AND VOICEOVER

THE VIDEOS SHOWING DIFFERENT THINGS.

I AM AMAZED AT HOW CREATIVE THE STUDENTS ARE.

AND THESE ARE NON-SCIENCE MAJORS.

SO GETTING THEM TO BE ABLE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN

THIS DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT AND TO GAIN THESE SKILL

SETS IS SO VALUABLE.

SO WE PUT ALL THIS TOGETHER.

SIAN WAS TEACHING ONLINE.

I WAS TEACHING A HYBRID CLASS.

AND WE THOUGHT, "WHAT COULD WE LOOK AT?"

BECAUSE, AGAIN, IT WAS AN EXPLORATORY STUDY.

IT WASN'T MEANT TO, YOU KNOW, REALLY DEFINE ANYTHING.

WE HAD HER DO A VIDEO INVESTIGATION ON EVERY

TOPIC, AND I PICKED FOUR, JUST TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN.

AND THEN, AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER, WE GOT BACK TOGETHER.

WE TALKED ABOUT HOW WE FELT ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE.

AND WE ALSO GAVE OUR STUDENTS AND SURVEY THAT

THEY HAD TO THEN COMPLETE RELATED TO THEIR

EXPERIENCES IN THE CLASS. AND THIS IS WHAT WE FOUND.

WELL, FIRST AND FOREMOST, I WANT TO START WITH THE

MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR ME.

GRADING USE TO BE LIKE THIS, BUT IT EVENTUALLY

BECAME MUCH MORE LIKE THIS, BECAUSE IT WAS FUN.

IT WAS FUN TO WATCH. THEY WERE DIFFERENT.

THEY WERE ENGAGING. THEY WERE LIMITED.

TWO MINUTES PER STUDENT, I CAN GIVE YOU THAT, RIGHT.

SECONDLY, THEY STARTED OFF BEING OUT IN THE ETHER,

WHO KNOWS WHO IS DOING WHAT, AND THEY TURNED INTO PEOPLE. IN MY

HYBRID CLASS I KNEW, BECAUSE I HAD SEEN THEM IN CLASS.

AND THEN I HAD THEM IN THE VIDEO.

SO EVEN IF IT NEVER TURNED TO THEIR FACE, I KNOW THEIR VOICE.

AND WE WERE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THAT.

AND THEN WE LOOK AT OUR SORT OF MORE GLOBAL GAINS

OF WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IN THIS ENVIRONMENT OF

TEACHING AND LEARNING, AND WE FOUND THIS: SO, WHEN

YOU LOOK AT THIS, GREEN AND PURPLE ARE GOOD.

AND WE'VE AGGREGATED THOSE FOR YOU.

SO WE'VE PULLED SOME OF THIS DATA OUT.

AND WHAT WE'VE FOUND WAS OUR STUDENTS ACTUALLY ENJOYED THEM.

THEY ENJOYED MAKING THEM.

THEY ENJOYED WATCHING OTHERS.

THEY ENJOYED LEARNING HOW TO -- THEY REALLY FELT IT

WAS A VALUABLE TOOL, THAT THEY ACTUALLY GOT BETTER

AT SUMMARIZING AND PRESENTING. HOW COULD YOU NOT?

WE DID HAVE THEM EMBEDDED INTO DISCUSSIONS BOARDS.

SO THEY WATCHED EACH OTHER'S, AND THEY GOT COMPETITIVE.

AND THEY GOT BETTER, RIGHT.

SO THEY RECOGNIZED THAT THEY WERE ALSO CRITICALLY

ANALYZING MATERIAL.

WE ASKED THEM TO PICK TOPICS THAT THEY FELT MOST

CONFIDENT ON AND THEN WHY.

WHAT AFFECTED YOUR CONFIDENCE?

AND IF YOU LOOK AT THIS, YOU'LL ACTUALLY SEE THAT PLATE

TECTONICS IS FIRST AND THEN EARTHQUAKES AND THEN VOLCANOS.

WELL, DOESN'T EVERYBODY LOVE THAT, RIGHT.

AND WHEN THEY TALKED ABOUT WHY THEY LOVED IT, IT WAS

BECAUSE THEY WERE INTERESTED.

BUT WHEN WE PULLED THAT DATA APART, WE REALIZED

THAT ACTUALLY MY STUDENTS REALLY, REALLY, REALLY

LIKED VOLCANOS AND SIAN'S WERE LIKE, YEAH, THEY'RE ALL RIGHT.

BUT VOLCANOS WAS ONE OF THE INVESTIGATIONS I DID,

AND SHE DIDN'T DO IT.

AND SO WE'RE LIKE, "WHOO, THIS IS EXCITING." BECAUSE

THEY CLAIM THEY WERE BETTER AT IT BECAUSE THEY

WERE INTERESTED. INTERESTING, RIGHT?

WHEN WE LOOKED UP THE ONES THEY DIDN'T LIKE, FOR

EXAMPLE, ROCKS AND MINERALS, REALLY, MASS

WASTING AND GROUNDWATER, AGAIN, WE PULLED OUT THAT

DATA, BUT IT TURNED OUT THAT SIAN'S STUDENTS HATED

ROCKS AND MINERALS, MINE LOVED THEM, BECAUSE IT WAS

ONE OF THE VIDEO INVESTIGATIONS I DID.

SO WE STARTED THINKING, "CAN WE ACTUALLY MAKE THEM

MORE INTERESTED IN A TOPIC BY ENGAGING THEM IN THIS WAY?"

BECAUSE WHEN THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T GET IT,

THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME. THEY JUST DIDN'T

FEEL LIKE IT. IT WAS NOT THAT THEY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND IT

OR IT WAS TOO HARD.

WELL, IN SOME WAYS IT WAS TOO HARD.

SO BEING INTERESTED AND NOT HAVING ENOUGH TIME ARE

NOT OPPOSITES, RIGHT?

SO WE STARTED THINKING, "MAYBE WE CAN MAKE THEM

MORE INTERESTED IF WE ENGAGE THEM IN THIS WAY."

ALSO, THEY ENJOYED THE VIDEO INVESTIGATIONS THEMSELVES.

THEY ENJOYED MAKING THEM. THEY ENJOYED WATCHING THEM.

AND HERE'S A REALLY IMPORTANT THING TO THINK ABOUT:

MOST OF THEM SPENT ONE AND A HALF TO TWO HOURS

ON EVERY SINGLE ONE.

IN SCIENCE CLASS, THAT WAS EVERY WEEK.

AND IN MINE THAT WAS FOUR TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF THE

SEMESTER. THEY SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON THESE THINGS.

AND TO HAVE THAT LEVEL OF ENJOYMENT AND ENGAGEMENT

ON SOMETHING THAT ACTUALLY TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND A

LOT OF EFFORT TO CONSTRUCT, WE THOUGHT WAS PRETTY IMPORTANT.

SO, THE OTHER DAY, I WAS IN MY CLASS -- I MEAN, I

WAS IN MY OFFICE, AND A STUDENT CAME IN TO DROP

SOMETHING OFF TO ME.

AND IT WAS ONE OF MY ONLINE STUDENTS.

AND WHAT WAS GREAT WAS THAT SHE TOOK ME LAST SEMESTER.

AND SHE'S LIKE, "OH, I'M IN YOUR ONLINE CLASS AGAIN.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE FORMAT YOU HAD FOR YOUR

ONLINE CLASS." AND THIS WAS A CLASS IN WHICH I

REQUIRED THEM TO DO A VIDEO INVESTIGATION EVERY WEEK.

AND HERE SHE WAS, BECAUSE SHE LOVED IT SO MUCH, SHE

WAS TAKING ME AGAIN.

THAT DOESN'T REALLY HAPPEN VERY OFTEN FOR NON-SCIENCE

MAJORS TO TAKE BOTH OF YOUR SCIENCE CLASSES WITH THE

SAME INSTRUCTOR, AND ESPECIALLY IN AN ONLINE ENVIRONMENT.

AND SO WHAT'S INTERESTING IS THAT THEY REALLY DO

ENJOY DOING THESE VIDEO INVESTIGATIONS.

AND YOU CAN EASILY DO THEM TOO.

THEY CAN BE DONE IN ANY CLASSROOM, IN ANY TOPIC.

AND WHAT YOU'RE ASKING IS YOU'RE ASKING YOUR

STUDENTS TO BASICALLY DO MINI PRESENTATIONS, BUT

THEY'RE NOT DOING THEM IN THE CLASSROOM WHERE

THEY'RE TAKING UP ALL OF YOUR TIME.

THEY'RE DOING THEM OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM AND THEN

EMBEDDING THEM INTO THE LMS.

AND SO WHAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT THAT IS THAT YOU'RE

GIVING THEM THE TIME TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER

USING TECHNOLOGY, BUT ALSO EXPRESSING THEIR

UNDERSTANDING AND THEIR SKILL SET.

SO WHAT'S NEXT?

AS MERRY HAD SAID, OUR GOAL NOW IS TO LOOK AT OUR

STUDENTS AND SAY, "CAN WE ACTUALLY DRIVE THEIR INTEREST?

CAN WE INCREASE THEIR CONFIDENCE IN A TOPIC BY

HAVING THEM DO SPECIFIC VIDEO INVESTIGATIONS?"

AND SO IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT WE FIND OUT.

MERRY, WOULD LIKE TO ADD ANYTHING TO THAT?

NO, THANK YOU.

SO NOW WHO'S EXCITED ABOUT VIDEO INVESTIGATIONS AND

WANTS TO TRY THEM?

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

A gente fica monitorando.

Escalação: Alisson, Fagner, Marquinhos, Miranda e Marcelo; Casemiro; Paulinho, Renato Augusto, Philippe Coutinho e Neymar; Roberto Firmino.

Pendurados: Miranda, Marcelo, Casemiro, Paulinho, Renato Augusto, Filipe Luís, Fernandinho e Giuliano.
