Hi folks.
Welcome to Juno Beach.
The landing on this beach in the British sector was actually
the responsibility of the Canadians.
Today we're going to learn about Canada's involvement in the Normandy landing.
The sector of the beach codenamed Juno Beach includes the coast of
Graye, Courseulles, Bernières and Saint-Aubin.
The Germans fortified these four towns which, before the war,
were traditional summer destinations.
On its approximately 6 miles (10km) of beach
the inexperienced 3rd I.D. landed with the support of
the 2nd Armored Brigade, also Canadian.
Their tanks swam to the beach thanks to Duplex-Drive technology.
On our tour of Juno Beach today
we will be accompanied by Frédérick,
a historian whose specialty is the Canadian troops in Normandy.
We are on the west side of Juno Beach, the Canadian beach.
The 3rd I.D. was tasked to take the beach.
They were supported by the 2nd Armored Brigade.
This assault was to be carried out on the beaches of Graye, Courseulles, Bernières and St. Aubin.
The Canadian objective was to take the German positions on the beach.
Then they were to advance to the "Oak Line", the code name for the railway line
between the airfield at Carpiquet
and Putot-en-Bessin to the west of the Canadian sector,
together with the 50th British I.D.
The landing took place here later than on the other beaches.
It should have been at 07.35, but it was behind schedule
due to bad weather and delays in preparing the landing craft.
The first units didn't start to land on JUno Beach until 07:45.
Juno Beach was divided into two sectors:
Mike and Nan.
Subdivided by colors.
The 7th Brigade landed on the western half
and the 8th on the eastern side.
We'll begin our tour in Graye, in the "Mike Green" sector,
where the first troops landed.
The tanks should have arrived ahead of the infantry
but the bad weather delayed their arrival.
Hundreds of bunkers from the "Atlantic Wall" remain in Normandy.
And some of them are especially well known and visited, like this one,
that they even ended up with their own names.
Explain to us why "Cosy's Pillbox".
This sector was assigned to the Royal Winnipeg Rifles Battalion,
One of the three battalions of the 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade.
Of its four companies, "B" Company had to attack without tank support
which was delayed because of the bad weather.
"Cosy" Aitken was one of the three commanders of "Cosy" platoon
of "B" Company and the only survivor of the three at that time.
Only the Captain of the company, Phil Gower, was still alive.
The second commander was injured in one eye.
One of the platoon commanders had died and the third
was on the beach with a serious injury to his spinal column.
So "Cosy" Aitken had to lead the men that remained
since there were many casualties.
They landed and made a frontal attack on this bunker which had not been destroyed yet.
The impact hole next to the gun was made by a Canadian tank
that supported Cosy's men when he was injured taking the bunker.
The pictures shot by Sergeant Bill Grant during the landing east of Bernières
are the best film testimony of the first waves of assault
of all the beaches on D-Day.
When the soldiers of the 8th Brigade landed at Bernières
this house in front us was already here.
We like to show buildings like this one because they not only help us to determine location
of a picture of that time, but they also helped the Allies to orient themselves on their map.
That house was a landmark that guided the crew of the British Navy landing craft
to the beach.
The house and also the bell tower that is further away in the town.
There was only this one house on the coast of Bernières at the time.
The rest had been demolished.
All the houses behind us did not exist.
And nowadays what is the house called?
"The Canadian House".
Here they pay homage to the Canadian soldiers at 8 am every June 6th.
Once they had arrived here
they were to capture numerous German positions.
The beach was exposed to crossfire and full of mines.
Some Canadians landed directly on top of the mines.
The casualties here were high, almost to the same extent as in Courseulles and Grayes.
After fierce fighting and once the tanks had reached the shore
the Canadians secured all of Juno Beach.
In order to continue fighting inland
the 9th Infantry Brigade landed at Bernières at 11:40 am.
The tide was already so high that only a few yards of beach remained.
This caused a bottleneck of vehicles and soldiers
which slowed down their departure from the beach.
Fortunately for the Canadians
the Germans didn't know about this concentration of troops
and the beach was not bombed.
This would have been fatal for the Allies.
Believe it or not
these gouges in the sidewalk are evidence of the Canadians' advance through Bernières.
Isn't that right?
We are at one of the exits from the beach
The road is not very wide.
The Canadian tanks and self-propelled artillery guns
had to move aside to let the infantry pass.
Some tanks drove up on the sidewalk.
And here we can see the marks from the tank tracks.
Once the bottleneck on the beach had cleared up
the Canadians encountered narrow streets which impeded
their deployment inland.
This delay is one of the reasons why the Canadians
didn't accomplished their D-Day objectives.
We are on the Saint-Aubin beach, east of the Canadian sector.
This side was assigned to the 8th Brigade North Shore Battalion.
The problem was that the sea walls were very tall.
And they were caught in crossfire that quickly caused heavy casualties
To such an extent that the second wave of landings
landed further away, not in front of the wall,
in order to surround the town and assault this bunker that the Navy couldn't destroy.
They couldn't destroy it from land either
but they managed to enter the town and, after fighting in the streets,
they captured this position
which finally liberated the beach and allowed other units to land
such as the 48 RM Commandos who landed a little east
and headed for Langrune right after Saint-Aubin.
Although Juno Beach was the Canadians' responsibility,
before finishing this episode we must mention that
the 48 British Commandos also landed at Saint-Aubin.
Their objective was to surround the town and head for Langrune.
Once there they were to attack German position WN26 from behind.
However the Germans managed to resist until the next day
preventing the Allies from linking up Juno and Sword Beaches.
The Canadian objectives couldn't be accomplished, the same in all beaches.
The Canadians only got half way there
mainly because of strong German resistance.
Also because of the congestion on the beaches.
The streets of the town were very narrow.
In addition to the obstacles on the beach
which is why the canadians moved to the intermediate line
between the beach and "Oak Line", the railway line which was the initial D-Day objective,
and the N13 road between Carpiquet and Putot-en-Bessin.
The Canadians were also the ones who made the furthest advance inland
But they also suffered the most losses in the Anglo-Canadian sector.
Almost 900 casualties,
Among them 350 dead.
On the beach as well as inland.
So they moved to the intermediate line and awaited day 7 to continue.
Thank you Frédérick, I think that this episode clearly illuminates
the participation of the Canadian forces not only on D-Day
but in the whole battle of Normandy.
The battle wasn't over on the night of June 6.
They had to continue attacking to accomplish their next objectives:
Capturing Carpiquet airfield and helping the British to capture Caen.
Caen will be another episode.
We'll say goodbye now.
