Lab Notes - Unrefined tea tree oil tests and stoichiometry tests - September 26th 2018 - Duration: 12:28.

Greetings fellow nerds.

We're in the final stretch of our project to make sodium by the alcohol catalyzed magnesium reduction process.

If you haven't been keeping up with my channel for the past couple of months then you might be a bit lost but that's okay.

Briefly i've been trying to make sodium by reacting magnesium metal and sodium hydroxide, in mineral oil with a tertiary alcohol catalyst.

There have been lots of issues that i've documented in past lab note videos including trying to find a workable solvent,

reaction times, processing methods in dioxane, preventing glassware destruction

and trying to dry the reagents using easy to obtain drying agents like aluminum and lithium metal.

Recently i've been trying to find alternatives for the most critical part of the process, the tertiary alcohol catalyst.

The existing catalysts that were made earlier this year are excellent and work exceedingly well.

But take a lot of work to make so an easy off-the-shelf catalyst would be preferable even if lesser but still reasonable performance can be obtained.

After some tests without catalysts, and using some longer chain primary alcohols.

It was concluded that tertiary alcohols were necessary.

The most promising domestically available tertiary alcohol was tea tree oil.

Although it gives low yield and the sodium produced comes out in tiny spheres which reduces yield even further as some of it passes through the sieve.

Now i ordered a liter of tea tree oil online so i can try and purify it but while i wait for delivery i wanted to run a few more experiments to make best use of my time.

First i wanted to do a practice run using lithium as the starter and do everything at once in one pot.

But it turned out that 40g of sodium hydroxide and 30g of magnesium was simply too much to stir.

The reason why i was able to use so much reagents in prior videos was because i did the drying step separately

and that actually ground down the sodium hydroxide into a powder so i could subsequently add magnesium without clogging the system.

So if want to do everything at once i should use smaller amounts.

So i setup a new run this time at half scale using just 20g of sodium hydroxide with 15g of magnesium and a single lithium battery as the starter.

I also wanted to test out unpurified tea tree oil some more since a single experiment doesn't necessarily prove tea tree oil is unworkable.

So i started heating and went through the drying process where we heat to 125 celsius for a few hours

and then we went to the sodium production temperature at 200 celsius andů ohhh crap.

*sigh* Well f*** you too.

So after i cleared the fly out i started all over again.

20g of sodium hydroxide, 15g of magnesium metal, 150mL of mineral oil and 1.2mL of straight tea tree oil.

This time i stuffed some paper towel in the bubbler to keep out suicidal flies.

They'll need to find some other amateur chemist to end their existence.

As usual i heated up to 125 celsius and held for a few hours to dry out the sodium hydroxide and protect the glassware.

Then i raised up to operating temperature at 200 celsius and held for 36 hours to produce sodium metal.

Pouring through the sieve this time it still has the coalescence problem as in my previous video and produced small sodium spheres.

So it's not a one time error, tea tree oil might have sodium coalescence problems.

Anyway, i poured the sodium back in the flask and performed the dioxane separation process to try and get a sodium yield.

Recovering the sodium this is all we got.

I measured the mass to be about 4g out of an expected 11.5g for about 34% .

So tea tree oil does work, just not very well.

34% is just barely acceptable though being somewhat worse than our 40% for the thermochemical dioxane process.

Now i suspect we lost most of our yield through the sieve during the original filtration if the sodium was too small to collect.

So i poured some of the slurry into water to see if there was sodium level reactivity.

And it looks like there is.

So we might have indeed higher yield.

But something about tea tree oil makes it hard for the sodium to coalesce together.

Now i know what you're thinking.

What about the lithium jumpstart.

This is the first time i'm using lithium in a full production run so maybe it's causing the bad sodium coalescence.

This is not a bad idea, we did see lithium interfering with sodium coalescence in earlier experiments so maybe it's the lithium.

So i ran a new experiment this time with a sodium jumpstart.

3.5g of sodium metal in addition to our current set of 20g sodium hydroxide, 15g magnesium, 150ml mineral oil and 1.2mL tea tree oil.

Once again we go through the start up procedure of drying at 125 celsius for a few hours before ramping to 200 and letting it run.

Interestingly this time we got backflow at just 11 hours indicating the reaction had stopped.

I'm not sure if this is a good sign.

Pouring off the slurry this time the sodium coalescence is much better.

Most of the sodium stuck together as desired and remained in the flask.

So maybe the lithium is really is the problem.

I then ran the dioxane separation process as usual and obtained sodium.

Weighing it this time we get about 7.6g.

But keep in mind we started with 3.5g of sodium in the jumpstart reaction.

So our actual yield is about 4.1g.

We haven't done much better than earlier with lithium.

So overall this tea tree oil just isn't doing well.

I definitely think the next step is refining it somehow.

Unfortunately i can't do that until my shipment arrives.

So i'm going to do another unrelated experiment i've been meaning to do but haven't had the time for, a substoichiometric run.

So far almost all of my experiments have been using a stoichiometric excess of magnesium to sodium hydroxide.

I did this primarily for consistency purposes to overcome depleting factors like excess water in the sodium hydroxide, oxygen in the air destroying our yield,

the fact that alcohol also depletes a small quantity of reductant and so on.

But having an excess of magnesium means we always needed a dioxane separation step.

It would be awesome if we could avoid that and just have pure sodium produced directly.

Magnesium is also the more expensive reagent compared to sodium hydroxide.

Saving it would be more cost effective.

So i setup a new run consisting of 20g of sodium hydroxide and just 10g of magnesium metal which is lower than the stoichiometric equivalent of 12.15g.

I also had 3.5g of sodium metal jumpstart and the usual tertiary alcohol of 3-ethyl-3-pentanol along with 150mL of mineral oil.

I'm not using tea tree oil for our catalyst in this experiment as i want to keep this run comparable to our other high yielding runs.

Interestingly enough something very strange happened, the reaction never stopped.

It kept producing hydrogen but got slower and slower and slower.

Eventually it would take ten minutes between hydrogen bubbles but never stopped and back flowed like all my other runs.

After 3 days i refused to spend more time and stopped the reaction.

I processed it like usual pouring off the slurry and boiling with dioxane to purify the sodium.

So far it looks good, this is a respectable sodium yield.

Now keep in mind we had a 3.5g sodium jumpstart so our actual yield is 9.2g.

Our expected yield is 9.45 so we're doing pretty good at 97% yield based on magnesium limiting reagent.

This is consistent with our other runs that also had high yield.

Checking in the dioxane was can see there is leftover magnesium.

Unfortunately this is not what we wanted.

If this worked and all the magnesium was used up then there shouldn't be any leftover magnesium.

The point of this experiment was to use up all the magnesium so we wouldn't need a dioxane separation step.

But it seems this will never be the case.

What i think is happening is that as the quantity of the magnesium gets smaller and smaller the rate of reaction gets smaller and smaller as well.

This makes sense because the magnesium surface area is reduced.

But as such it'll take an extremely long time to consume every last bit of magnesium.

It also took us 3 days to get this far.

Rather than saving time we ended up taking more time.

But i suppose if you can accept magnesium contamination then this isn't that bad.

You can avoid the dioxane separation step and use your sodium for more forgiving purposes like storing and drying solvents

or performing robust reactions that don't require high purity sodium.

For my future experiments I'm going to continue using an excess of magnesium so things finish faster.

But at least we learned that using a substoichiometric amount is acceptable if you accept either lower yields, or longer reaction times.

Now you might wondering, if a substoichiometric amount of magnesium ran very slowly, would a super stoichiometric excess run super fast?

Since i had nothing better to do with my time while i waited for me tea tree oil shipment i indeed ran that experiment.

This time i used an equal amount of magnesium to sodium hydroxide at 20g each, much higher than all previous runs.

Unfortunately it still took about two days which is consistent with my other runs.

This is likely because alcohol concentration and other factors also put limits on the rate so there is no one variable we can improve to substantially increase it.

Oh well. At least we know that throwing more magnesium at it would be a waste.

Okay, that's it for lab notes for now.

Hopefully my tea tree oil will arrive soon and we can go through the process of purification to get something better.

Now moving on.

I'd like to announce a giveaway of some molecular model kits.

For those of you that don't know, molecular model kits are used by chemistry professors to extort money from chemistry students.

They also have a lesser known use to build molecules for demonstrating molecular structures.

Now i know you're going to say there are hundreds of model kits out there and they're really easy to buy online.

Heck if you were really stingy you could make your own models from gumdrops and toothpicks.

What's so special about these kits that i'm giving away.

These particular ones have magnets inside so they stick together.

It's always fun to play with magnets.

And the magnets have been strategically placed so they enforce the geometry.

Let me demonstrate by making ethane.

And there we go, that's ethane, and as you can see, we have sp3 hybridized carbons with their associated tetrahedral geometry.

We even have free rotation about the carbons.

Interestingly the surfaces have been further engineered to enforce geometry of double bonds.

Let me do a basic dehydrogenation reaction of removing these hydrogens.

Now if we reconnect the carbons we have ethylene with the correct planar geometry.

But more importantly the texture on the surface of the carbons makes this hard to rotate.

You'll actually break the bond if you try.

This matches with the actual molecule that doesn't allow rotation for sp2 hybridized carbons like this.

Now granted, most well-designed model kits enforce geometry.

But i like this one since it's more fun and intuitive to do it with magnets than just plastic sticks for bonds.

And for other model kits, you have to use different carbon atoms for sp3, sp2 and sp hybridizations.

Here the same carbon atom has functionality to do it all like you find in nature.

Now i know some of you are going to accuse me of being paid for this plug.

But unlike all the other times i've been a greedy money grabbing bastard, this time i'm not.

I am getting no compensation whatsoever for this.

I just happen to know the makers of these kits and i was able to procure a bunch at a discount.

I got about twenty kits and i'll be giving out half to my top patreon contributors, a quarter to random contributors, and a quarter to random youtube subscribers.

The only thing you have to do to participate in this giveaway is to be a patron or be a subscriber and comment on this video.

You have more chances if your are patron though due to smaller sample size.

I'll announce the lucky winners in my next vlog.

If you like these kits and want to buy your own directly you can visit the website of the creators at realatoms.com, I've also included link in the video description.

Hi guys my name is Christina I'm a nutritional health coach and Nutritional

therapist and I upload delicious healthy recipes, nutritional and lifestyle

tips every week. If you are new to this channel and if these topics interest you,

then do hit the subscribe button to be notified when a new video goes live. In

this video I'm going to share with you one of my favorite ways of enjoying

coffee. I used to be addicted to coffee. if you have been following me from the

beginning of this channel, one of my very first videos was how to cut down on

caffeine and the reason why I was qualified is because I used to be an

addict. I used to drink four coffees per day. Now this has changed. I'm

actually not that much addicted. I drink coffee whenever I feel like it. I can go

days without drinking coffee. But now there are times when I would like to

drink coffee and count my blessings and just be mindful and there are times that I

want to spice it up a little bit. Spice my coffee a little bit and adding

things that I know that are beneficial for my health

and this is and this recipe was created off the back of me being a little bit

more creative with what I was adding to my coffee and making my own type of

cappuccino, because my favorite type of coffee is cappuccino I have to say.

Cappuccino with oat milk and so I wanted to create something similar or a little

bit more adventurous and at the same time that actually will have some beneficial

effects on my brain and I think I found it and I'm going to share that with you.

Are you excited? mmm I think you should be okay let's go

SO go ahead and prepare filtered coffee as you would normally do.

one cup of filtered coffee is actually enough for two cups of my healthy

protein coffee recipe. Pour the coffee in a blender and pour a cup of the non-dairy

milk such as coconut milk, cashew milk, almond milk or oat milk whatever is your

preference or whatever is available at the time to you. Add 2 tbsp of unflavored

protein powder. I'm using unflavored collagen powder but you can use a vegan

option instead. I have provided some alternatives in the description of this

video. I then add 2 tbsp of coconut oil to incorporate some healthy fats to

ensure that I'm satisfied for a long period of time and to create some froth.

Blend everything for a few seconds. Pour it in two cups and enjoy.

Cheers what do you think guys would you

experiment with it a little bit. I highly recommended you if you did drink coffee

then do experiment with this recipe as well to see if you like it or not. I

know that a lot of people like their coffee very strong and this is not for

those people I guess because it's more of a mild flavour. now I also have a

Facebook group and if you would like to get an accountability or support from

like-minded people then join the group

and I'll be there doing live streams with tips and tricks on health and also

live streamers with interviews with experts from different areas so this

definitely is a place to be. If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up. It

will mean the world to me because I know that you have enjoyed it and if you

enjoyed it then do share it with anyone you think will find it useful and guys I

will see in the next episode bye

Sen. Lindsey Graham Latest Kavanaugh Accusation Doesn't Pass The Smell Test(VIDEO)!!! - Duration: 10:03.

Sen. Lindsey Graham Latest Kavanaugh Accusation Doesn't Pass The Smell Test

joining us now first with this developing situation and much more is

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said I can give you chapter and verse

that was hard to sit through what's that that was hard to listen to that was

really tough the problem is these are real people that are being estrellas

Satterlee massage remember John McCain John Lewis said that John McCain's

campaign reminded him of George Wallace's campaign yet that's another

one and this is the problem these are real lives that get destroyed here what

Kennedy said about Robert Bork was despicable and disgusting what was done

to Clarence Thomas was another last-minute smear it's a little later

they tried it with a leader yep what do you make of this

now that we've had time there's not a single person in the case of Professor

Ford that she mentioned that was there that has corroborated the story and the

same thing with miss Ramirez well number one to the Democrats they knew about

this since July 30th they chose to do nothing about it for them to complain

about the process is like an arsonist complaining about a fire the allegations

against Judge Cavanaugh are collapsing this has been the worst low point in the

Senate for me and that's saying a lot I never thought it would get this bad

we're going to have a hearing Thursday and have a vote soon thereafter and I

look forward to supporting this good man the takeaway from me Shawn is that when

it comes to Donald Trump there are no boundaries there are no rules whatever

you need to do to destroy him or agenda is okay and that's very sad you know

senator we do have a serious allegation and I've said let everybody be heard and

I know you have said the same a month ago we are the girlfriend of keith

ellison number two at the DNC yeah one is running for attorney general in

Minnesota repeated physical and emotional abuse the reason I say this is

selective moral outrage a lot of the people we're talking about right now

haven't uttered a word so it's only guilt by accusation if

you're a conservative or Republican or appointed by a Republican

well Democrats are willing to believe anything about a trump nominee they

didn't believe anything about President Clinton who had a long history of this

here's what I can tell you this man judge Kavanagh has been in very

responsible jobs for well over 20 years not one woman has ever come forward to

say they acted inappropriately in the workplace that he used his power and

untoward way these allegations are not about sex they're about power

you don't become a serial rapist for a couple years and hang it up

that's the garbage of all garbage coming from the avenatti camp so here's what I

think will happen nobody in their right mind is going to deny him a seat on the

Supreme Court based on allegations 35 years old when everybody at the high

school party says they don't know what the lady is talking about dr. Ford and

the second allegation is not even worthy of talking about so I hope every

Republican will be fair to judge Cavanaugh listen to what Miss dr. Ford

says and render a good decision here if he is denied a seat on the Supreme Court

based on thirty-five-year-old allegations that uncorroborated who in

the world will come forward in the future to be a judge there's a lot at

stake here senator I couldn't get 220 people ever stand up for me to be honest

he's at 220 people I know your goth buddies and they would not be there I

know they don't you know I love when people come on my show and just trashman

really I have guests in a minute I think that's true he's that torn 20 people but

they went a bomb yeah I mean there's a women that knew him in high school

college law school the Bush administration law clerks of his here's

my question many of your colleagues when they say I believe her right do they

believe in the presumption of innocence anymore now they just want to get Trump

there's no way you can say that an allegation this old not specific to time

and place when everybody else supposedly at the party said that happened that you

can render a conclusion in the favor of one

over the other you just want an outcome this is about outcome politics whatever

it takes to stop Trump we'll do whatever we have to say about Kavanagh to stop

him we'll say it's been disgusting they've had this allegation since July

they're playing politics with it there's been delay in deception and it won't

work it's gonna blow up in their face this is the way we do politics Senator

Lindsey Graham cast doubt on the second woman to come forward with sexual

misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh claiming

the accusation doesn't pass the smell test what I have read doesn't pass the

smell test in terms of credibility Graham told ijr regarding Deborah Meyer

as his recent sexual misconduct claim against the Supreme Court nominee I

don't know what happened to mizramirez but her initial reaction was I can't

swear to this and after six days of being with a group of lawyers she got

more certain but still she's uncertain and he denied it he said the Republican

member on the Senate Judiciary Committee also argued that he's doubtful of the

allegations against Kavanagh in part because so far they are all from over 30

years ago Matt if you've got a character flaw where you're a predator my view is

it doesn't stop when I junior brought up that the Trump nominee is now facing his

second allegation of sexual misconduct with a third possibly on the way Graham

said you don't become a serial rapist for a couple of years and hang it up

since he's been a professional he's had a lot of women work for him and no one

who's ever worked for him has ever suggested that he was anything other

than professional Graham continued I used to be a criminal defense attorney I

could win this case I can win this case against anybody anywhere in any court

the South Carolina senator added with a laugh Kavanagh who has definitively

denied the mounting allegations against him appeared on Fox News on Monday night

and publicly addressed the claims for the first time I'm not going to let

false accusations drive us out of this process

and we are looking for a fair process where I can be heard and defend my

integrity my lifelong record the judge said my lifelong record of promoting

dignity and equality for women starting with the women who knew me when I was 14

years old I'm not going anywhere Cavanaugh's first

accuser Christine Blasi Ford is scheduled to testify before the Senate

Judiciary Committee on Thursday with a committee vote set to take place at some

point after we are now a little more than one day away from a Senate hearing

where the woman accusing the president's Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault

will make her case at least that's what we think but there are still major

complaints from the legal team of Christine Blasi forward raising major

questions about whether Thursday's testimony will even take place chief

congressional correspondent Mike Emanuel has the latest from Capitol Hill tension

is building ahead of Thursday's high-profile high-stakes hearing

featuring Judge Brett Kavanaugh defending his integrity and his accuser

professor Christine Blasi Ford both under oath

president Trump blasting Democrats and criticizing Cavanaugh's accusers during

a bilateral meeting with the President of Colombia she admitted she was drunk

she admits time lapses the Senate Majority Leader expressed confidence in

the embattled nominee we're gonna be moving forward I'm confident we're gonna

win confidences he will be confirmed in the very near future

not so fast say Senate Democrats who are again demanding an FBI background

investigation I believe there's a chance a very good chance that once the facts

all come out that judge Kavanagh will not be approved

Ford's legal team sent a letter last night complaining about Republicans

hiring a female outside attorney to handle questioning quote this is not a

criminal trial for which the involvement of an experienced sex crimes prosecutor

would be appropriate neither dr. Blasi Ford nor Judge Cavanaugh is on trial

the goal should be to develop the relevant facts not try a case a senior

judiciary Democrat blasted chairman chuck Grassley for secrecy who is going

to speak for all of the eleven Republican senators we don't have the

name do we someone has been given a new job a person we don't know meanwhile a

critical Republican vote emphasize she's looking forward to hearing from both

sides under oath fox has confirmed judge Cavanaugh was interviewed today by the

Judiciary Committee about the Debbie Ramirez allegation the second accuser

during his time at Yale Cavanaugh again denied it sources say Republican

staffers led the call with democratic staffers listening in but the Democrats

did not ask questions Rep Mike man you live on Capitol Hill Mike thanks thank

you god bless you and God bless america

Royal Family members INSIST on THIS extraordinary treatment when on engagements abroad - Duration: 3:42.

Queen of the World, an insightful new documentary which aired on ITV last night, disclosed intimate details about the lofty realm in which the Royals reside

The programme charts the everyday life and work of Her Majesty the Queen as she goes about her Royal engagements

One intriguing scene features Master of the Household of Rideau Hall, Christine Macintyre, who is responsible for overseeing every aspect of a Royal visit to the Ottawa residence of Her Majesty

During the snippet, Ms Macintyre revealed the Royal Family always receives their own particular sheets at Rideau Hall, to give the impression they were sleeping in their own bed

She said: "After a long day of travelling, there is nothing better than going into a bed that doesn't feel like a hotel bed

"And that is what you are trying to do - is to make it feel like they are in their own bed

" Maids in the Canadian Royal residence work tirelessly to give the sheets the perfect feel, spending longer than an hour on each individual sheet of linen to get it just right

Ms Macintyre said: "There are special sheets that are used for members of the Royal Family

"And they are kept aside and brought out on only those special occasions when they are here

" Referring to the women who prepare the sheets ahead of the Royal Family's arrival, Ms Macintyre said: "It takes over an hour to iron one sheet

" Other members of the Royal Family are rumoured to never travel abroad without certain bizarre items

Prince Charles was forced to downplay rumours that he always travels with his own personal toilet seat

Asked about the claims by presenters on Brisbane's Hit105 radio station, Prince Charles quipped: "My own what? "Oh, don't believe all that crap

" The question was put to the Prince of Wales as he and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were on an engagement in Brisbane during a seven-day tour of Australia

Prince William also has a particular travel item. He never travels abroad without his Globe-Trotter suitcase

Established in 1897 in Germany, the brand moved to the UK in 1932 and was favoured by Queen Elizabeth during her honeymoon in 1947

Meanwhile, the Queen is rumoured to never leave the house without a trusty chocolate biscuit cake

Former Royal Chef Darren McGrady said: "Now the chocolate biscuit cake is the only cake that goes back again and again and again every day until it's all gone

"She'll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up, she wants to finish the whole of that cake

"
