- Back in the 1970s, we would have these smog alerts.

It was hard to breathe and it just felt like a

chemical burning.

So by the time I graduated high school in 1981,

you could tell things were getting better because

you could start to see the visible part of the smog

was going away.

Now the visible part of the smog is starting to come back

and that really has me concerned because something

has happened where we're going backwards.

- When I was a child,

my family used to go all all kinds of different places

on vacations, family vacations, and we just loved it.

We would go camping in Yosemite,

we'd go to Arizona to the Grand Canyon

and I remember being in the local mountains

where the air was nice and fresh

and you could smell the pine trees and it was great.

And then, we would start heading down the mountain

and you would go around this one corner

where, all the sudden, you could see the L.A. Basin

and I remember just feeling

like my heart was about to just drop

'cause you couldn't see the bottom of the valley.

All you saw was smog

and it looked like this, just a cloud of just, bleh;

it was gross and I remember thinking,

and we have to go down the mountain and go back to that.

And, I was like, I wanted to stay up here in the mountains

where it's nice and clean.

I didn't want to have to go back down there.

(tranquil piano music)

I don't really remember anybody talking about

what to do about the smog, back then.

It almost was an accepted part of life, for a while.

It just felt like, well it's just smog, it's just L.A.;

L.A. is a smoggy place.

You didn't question it because you didn't know

that there was anything better.

Going to elementary school was kind of a nightmare

'cause this was back in the 1970s

and we would have these Smog Alerts.

On Smog Alert days, I felt like my lungs were burning.

It was hard to breathe

and it just felt like a chemical burning.

So, by the time I graduated high school in 1981,

it was a lot better and it was starting

to feel more hopeful that the Smog Alerts are,

oh, they're gonna be a thing of the past, pretty soon.

You could tell things were getting better

because you could start to see,

the visible part of the smog was going away.

Then, I don't know what happened.

It just seems like the progress we had made

stopped, for a while,

and people were all focused on,

oh, you can see the mountains, now.

But, now that the visible part was better,

it was hard to convince people that the invisible part,

which is the dangerous part, was still there.

A lot of people don't know, when they think of California,

they don't think of an oil state.

When you think of an oil state,

you think of Alaska or Texas,

but California was actually one

of the biggest producers of oil, and still is.

This map shows you where all the oil wells are

in California, oil and gas wells,

and if you take a look at this map,

people don't realize how extensive it is

and the fact that many of them are

in major metropolitan areas.

People don't know that they're living

right on top of oil fields.

Now, the visible part of the smog is starting to come back

and that really has me concerned

because it's, like, where is this smog coming from?

I thought we had taken care of this.

Something has happened where we're going backwards.

So, what happened?

We have the worst air quality in the country

and so, something is obviously not working

and we need to move forward and we need to fix this.

Calhoun, shot and killed the two

in Ravenna around 5

weeks ago.

you can run but you can't hide.

tracked this individual

daily since November 30th

Investigators arrested Calhoun

over the

weekend in Steubenville, around

100 miles south of Ravenna.

U.S. Marshals say he was caught

hiding in a closet in a vacant

home when they

arrested him---they think he had

been inside the house for 2

days.

A judge presented Calhoun his

charges today in court.

He faces one count of aggravated

murder, which carried a

potential life sentence.

More charges are expected to

come.

this is one of the more intense

man hunts i've been involved

with in my career. There's

been a couple others, but this

one was pretty intense

law enforcement say bad blood

between calhoun and sanders

played a roll in the

shooting. Sarah Marsh did not

know the shooter

doing what she always

do---trying to help somebody.

If someone needed her,

she's going to be there for

them. Calhoun's bond is placed

at 3 million

dollars---his preliminary

hearing will be Friday, January

13.

In fact, about 40 percent of the hypothyroid patients had predominantly sensory

signs of a sensorimotor axonal neuropathy early in the course of thyroid disease.

4. Hair Loss. Proper functioning of the thyroid gland is essential for the development and maintenance of the hair follicles,

and an underactive thyroid can result in significant changes in hair growth and texture. It may also affect eyebrows and body hair.

A 2008 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reports that thyroid hormones directly affect hair follicles.

The thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)

modulate several aspects of hair anatomy, from the hair growth cycle to the hair's pigmentation.

Another 2008 study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology notes that among the thyroid disorders, hypothyroidism is often

associated with alopecia areata.The study also put emphasis on screening for thyroid abnormalities in patients with chronic,

recurrent and extensive alopecia areata.

A 2012 study published in the European Journal of Endocrinology notes that autoimmune hypothyroidism patients had significantly higher

levels of fatigue as compared with differentiated thyroid carcinoma patients.

In a 2007 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers noted that people with hypothyroidism undergoing

12 weeks of thyroxine treatment saw a reduction in their tiredness, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and body weight.

An ascot, or cravat, is also a considered a tie.

The name comes from the Royal Ascot race held at the Ascot Racecourse.

In British English the casual day term for ascot would be a 'day cravat' so as to

clearly distinguish it from the more formal dress ascot.

It is wide, formal and typically made of a thicker silk material such as modern ties.

However, the more casual day ascot is made of a lighter silk that is much softer against

the skin and less formal.

It is almost always brightly colored with a pattern.

Ascots are worn folded over and fastened with a stickpin or a tie tack.

Ascots are making a comeback and are definitely on trend for a cool, hip look.
