- [Congregation] Good morning, father.
- Today we celebrate the epiphany of the Lord,
the feast day of the light of Christ
shining forth and coming to all nations.
We now pause at the beginning of this liturgy to reflect
on when we have failed to live in this light.
Lord Jesus, you are the light that shines on all peoples.
Lord, have mercy.
- [Congregation] Lord, have mercy.
- Christ Jesus, you are the King of all ages.
Christ, have mercy.
- [Congregation] Christ, have mercy.
- Lord Jesus, you are the glory of God made visible.

- May all mighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
- [Congregation] Amen.
- Glory to God in the highest
and on Earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you,

We give you thanks for your great glory.
Lord God, Heavenly King,
God, all mighty Father,
Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world.
Have mercy on us.
You take away the sins of the world
receive our prayer.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy one.
You alone are the Lord.
You alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit
in the glory of God the Father amen.
Let us pray.
God, who on this day revealed your only begotten Son
to the nations by the guidance of a star,
grant in your mercy that we who know you already by faith
may be brought to behold the beauty of your sublime glory
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit
one God forever and ever.
- [Congregation] Amen.
- A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
Rise up in splendor Jerusalem.
Your light has come.
The glory of the Lord shines upon you.
See darkness covers the Earth,
and thick clouds cover the peoples.
But upon you the Lord shines
and over you appears his glory.
Nation shall walk by your light
and kings by your shining radiance.
Raise your eyes and look about.
They all gather and come to you.
Your sons come from afar,
and your daughters in the arms of their nurses.
Then you shall be radiant at what you see.
Your heart shall throb and overflow.
For the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you.
The wealth of nations shall be brought to you.
Caravans of camels shall fill you.
Dromedaries from Midian and Ephah,
all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense
and proclaiming the praises of the Lord.

- A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew.
- [Congregation] Glory to you, Lord.
- When Jesus of born in Bethlehem in Judea
in the days of King Herod,
behold Magi from the East arrived in Jerusalem saying,
"Where is the newborn king of the Jews?
"We saw his star at its rising
"and have come to do him homage."
When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled
and all Jerusalem with him.
Assembling all the chief priests
and the scribes of the people,
he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea."
Thus it has been written through the prophet,
"And you Bethlehem land of Judah
"are by no means least among the rulers of Judah.
"Since from you shall come a ruler
"who is to shepherd my people Israel."
Then Herod called the Magi secretly
and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance.
He sent them to Bethlehem and said,
"Go and search diligently for the child.
"When you have found him,
"bring me word that I too may go and do him homage."
After their audience with the king, they set out,
and behold the star that they had seen
at its rising preceded them until it came
and stopped over the place where the child was.
They were overjoyed at seeing the star,
and on entering the house
they saw the child with Mary his mother.
They prostrated themselves and did him homage,
then they opened their treasures and offered him
gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Having been warned in a dreamed not to return to Herod,
they departed for their country by another way.
The gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- Today's gospel on this beautiful feast of the epiphany
really shows us how God is generous
and lavishes us with gifts
gifts beyond our merit we might even say.
Recognizing God's generosity we along with the Magi
pay homage to the Lord.
The gifts we offer are our faith, hope, and love
in service and in ministry to one another and to God.
Epiphany celebrates God's illuminating, animating,
and transforming presence in human life at all times.
Epiphany is a revelation, a manifestation.
It gives light.
It is concrete.
It does something.
The image of light is a strong image in our faith
but this image of light in that God is the light,
the light that comes from God,
God from God, light from light.
We hear that God revealed his Son to the nations
by the guidance of a star, the light of a star.
Today he reveals to all of us in faith the word made flesh,
which we celebrated on Christmas day, the incarnation,
the word of God coming to us
in the flesh in Jesus Christ.
His light is strong.
His light is near.
His light is love.
His light is pureness.
You see the arrival of the Magi teaches that God's kingdom
this church that we are, expands all time and space.
That light is present today as it was 2000 years ago.
This is the kind of joy that God wants to give us,
a sense of deep strong meaningful, meaningful joy
because God is faithful.
We know that whatever happens
no matter how the light in our lives may get obscured
or the clouds may block the light itself
that the light of Christ will always permeate
anything that we are experiencing
especially when we are in suffering
or trials, or tribulations, sickness.
This mass, this TV mass is for the home bound
those who can't be physically here present among us
but are with us spiritually at home.
That light of Christ carries them
and carries them through the difficulties
that they are experiencing
whether it be sickness or other reasons
but that light is permeated there as well
as we unite ourselves through the light of Christ.
So today as we did on Christmas,
as we did 2000 years ago
once again we receive the greatest gift of all.
We receive that gift of Jesus Christ.
We receive it present here and now in his word
in which we just proclaimed and heard
and in his Eucharist in his body and blood
that God is present even now amongst you and I.
God reminds us through that,
through that gift that sacramental gift,
that we can depend on him,
that we can count on God.
When we receive him in holy communion, let's remember that.
That God is present among us,
and we are carrying Christ the light within us,
and that we too are called to be light to the nations.
I believe in God the Father all mighty,
creator of Heaven and Earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
who was conceived the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into Hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into Heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God
the Father all mighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection and the body
and life everlasting amen.

knowing that in Christ God gives us every good thing.

and once more giving you thanks he said the blessing
and gave the chalice to his disciples saying,
"Take this all of you and drink from it.
