Hey!
Today I want to tell you about a strange thing that happened to me a while ago.
This might be a long video, I know don't, I haven't edited it yet.
But bare with me, I want to tell you about this
and I think you'll enjoy this story, because it's kind of... weird.
There is a background story that you have to know about first,
before I start telling you about what I experienced.
There is a story, or a legend, or whatever you want to call it...
... about a phenomenon on the island of Gotland, called The Lights in Martebo.
I'm gonna keep myself short, but there are links in the description if you want to read more about this.
As far as I've understood, The Lights in Martebo are a well-known phenomenon on Gotland.
Many have heard of it, people from Gotland have heard the story throughout their whole life.
But not many have seen the actual lights, it's always a friend of a friend who has seen them,
or a grandparent's neighbour, and so on.
It's not something that a lot of people have seen,
but enough people to give it a name and make people know about the story.
So Martebo is a place on Gotland in the middle of nowhere.
And The Lights in Martebo is a light that many people have seen in this very place on Gotland.
People describe it as a ball of light that floats in the air,
it's seen in the dark during nighttime and many claim that it moved towards them.
It floats, around 1-1,5 metres above the ground, and shines bright in white or yellow.
Almost like fire.
But there are a lot of different versions on how the lights look, depending on who's telling the story,
but I've understood that it often starts as a red light when it first appears,
then it turns into a intense, yellowish white ball of light,
and right before it disappears, it goes back to red.
But this is just what I've heard, if there are people from Gotland watching this I bet you have a different story.
Like I said, it's just a fairy tale.
I was on Gotland just before New Year's.
I was in Martebo, and I saw something.
Although it differs from the many stories of The Lights in Martebo,
if it wasn't the The Lights in Martebo that I saw... then I really don't know what it could've been.
And that's the story I want to tell you today.
I just want to add that after my experience, I went home and wrote everything down.
I just realised that I'll remember it for about 24 hours, and after that it'll be a different story every time I tell it.
So I wrote down all the details that I'm 100% sure of.
So I was on Gotland with a guy named Calle, who's born and raised on the island.
It's the evening of December 29th and we're at Calles place.
Calle asks me if I want to do something, we start talking about what to do,
and I say "let's go out and try to see The Lights in Martebo?"
It's all just for fun, Calle haven't seen the lights himself but he's raised with hearing the story.
He's never even tried to go out and find it, so he's like "okay, it takes half an hour to drive there".
So we get in the car and start driving.
When we get there, it's around 10PM and it's pitch black.
It's as dark as in death.
This is the countryside on Gotland, there's not even street lighting.
And there's a spot, if you google this there's this certain spot you should drive to,
where a lot of people have seen the lights.
So we drive on a country road, and turn left onto a... not really a path, but a forest road.
First it goes through the forest, and then there are two fields on each side of the road.
So to get to this certain spot we should turn right and then continue straight ahead, and then stop.
But when we drive onto this forest road and it's pitch black, forest on one side and a barn on the other side,
and I'm afraid of the dark. So I just sat there, very aware of that we were there to see something unexplainable.
I was this close to shitting my pants.
So we drive onto the forest road
and when we realise that we should turn right to get to the right place,
which is just a tiny path, it just gets smaller and smaller,
I just sit there in panic, I imagine clowns turning up right in front of the car,
I'm scared shitless.
So we decide to not turn onto the path to the right spot, but to continue on the forest road
because if we keep driving on the forest road we'll get back on the same county road that we came from.
So we drive super slow on this road,
it's pitch black, in the distance we see the light from a barn and the same thing in the other directions.
It's a clear, starry sky, but it's so fecken dark.
What we see ahead of us is darkness, and the ground for about ten metres, or as far as the car lights reach.
We use the car's low beam lights, in case we would see any lights, in that case we'd want it to be as dark as possible.
So we drive the whole forest road and come back to the country road,
I'm relieved and Calle is slightly disappointed.
We stand still for a moment.
And Calle says: "let's go the same way one more time?"
And I'm like, shit... "okay, one more time."
So we follow the country road back to the beginning,
drive onto the forest road, with forest on one side and the barn on the other side,
when we come out of the forest there are fields on each side,
and then we know that the road keeps going straight and then curves left to lead out to the country road.
We approach the fields
and once again, we pass the "real" path, where people have spotted The Lights in Martebo.
And Calle says "are you sure you don't want to go in there?", I can tell he wants to.
And I say "no, I don't want to, I'm too afraid".
I also realise that if we drive onto this tiny path and something would appear,
then I would panic, I would start screaming
and poor Calle would have to drive in reverse because there would be no place to turn the car on this tiny path.
So I'm like, no, let's not even try to go in there.
So we sit there in the car, we're standing still, and Calle's like "ah well then."
"... but what's that over there?"
It's like, it looks like the rear light of a car.
A bright, red light that moves in like 40 or 50 km/h (= 30 mph)
it looks like it's driving on the same road as us, ahead of us.
It's so hard to estimate the distance, since the only thing we see is this light approaching from the left,
but it's like 100 metres away from us. Or 200? I have no idea.
And I say "it's an oncoming car"
"there's a car coming really fast on this small forest road."
Calle replies, "is that really a car?"
and I'm like "yes of course, it's a red light, it's a car light".
And Calle says "but there aren't any headlights?"
and I say "but can't you see the ground? It's bright, from the lights."
So I check our rear view mirrors to see that there's nothing behind us so that we can reverse the car
and let the other car pass,
and there's no one behind us to I tell Calle to start reversing.
But he says that it's no good to reverse the car,
better to drive forward and see if we can find a spot to drive up on the field.
So we drive forward and this light continues, it's so steady,
in a solid movement, a solid pace,
a red light, bright as a rear light of a car.
Just like a car was reversing on the road, it's hard to explain. (text: "what's happening to my microphone?!)
We're driving forward, getting closer and closer to the light
and I'm just waiting for this car - at least that's what I think it is -
to face in our direction, since we know that the road is curved.
I just wait for it to come straight towards us, for me to see the two headlights.
But that never happens. And suddenly this red light is straight in front of us,
and continues over to our right side.
When it's right ahead of us, I remember screaming "that's not a car!"
and Calle steps on the gas.
And when we get to the spot where the light must have crossed the road,
we realise that we have fields on both sides of us.
We know that the road curves to the left, but it curves much further away
than the light was when it crossed the road,
and also it's not a sharp turn so the light couldn't have been on the road,
and the road beyond both of the fields goes back into the woods.
So this light must've travelled from the field to the left,
crossed the road and continued over the field on our right.
Eventually, we are side by side with the light directly on my right,
and this is where our opinions split.
I think that the light continued moving in it's direction,
while Calle thinks that the light stopped and stood still.
But it's impossible to tell, since we have the light on our right side.
So Calle stops the car and says "let's wait and see where it goes!"
But I'm just so full of adrenaline,
and, well, scared, because we can't understand what kind of light this is,
it's just a red ball of light!
So I'm like "No. Drive. Drive home."
So while Calle drives further on into the woods, I turn around and see the red light flicker between the trees.
We drive back home to Calle and talk continuously about what this light could've been.
We can clearly rule out that the light came from a vehicle.
If it was, the vehicle would've had one single light, which was red.
And it would've been driving entirely smooth over a plowed field,
across a road and over another field.
Without any change of pace, without changing height above the ground. Totally even.
Totally solid, I can't stress that fact enough.
And it all went to quickly, I think we saw the light for about 30 seconds.
It was pitch black, we had nothing in front of us or behind us, and we were completely alone.
And this is so, so, strange.
I have a hard time believing my own eyes.
I'm so glad that we were two persons who saw it, and that our stories of the event are the same.
Like I said, there are links in the description if you want to learn more about The Lights in Martebo.
If somebody who's watching this also have seen The Lights in Martebo....
... like, have seen for real, please tell me about your experience?
Because, what we saw isn't the same thing as the stories of The Lights in Martebo.
I don't know what we saw.
Some kind of natural phenomena, I bet, but that hasn't been explained yet.
It's unexplainable and that's what makes it so weird.
Well. I think that's all I had for this week,
thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed my... ghost story? Is that what this is? I have no clue.
Take care and I'll see you guys next week!
Bye!
