- The cool thing about Footscray is that,

although there's such a difference in ethnic groups,

there's such peace and acceptance within the suburb.

I feel that a lotta people tend to go there

for a sense of comfort; they feel accepted.

When I met Aaron, it was in Footscray originally.

And I started speaking up to him,

and I thought he had a cool story.

He's a father of two, really cool guy.

Was living in Footscray for the past 11 years.

We spent the day walking around the suburb

checking different places out.

You know, he told me different stories

about different sites,

and I felt like I just relived the past decade with him.

So Brisbane when you were, I mean, after New Zealand--

- [Aaron] Yeah.

- [Nasir] And then you left Brisbane when you were 16?

- [Aaron] Ah, no.

- [Nasir] Or you stayed in Brisbane for a few years?

- [Aaron] No, I stayed in Brisbane for quite a few years.

- [Nasir] So you just left home?

- [Aaron] Yeah, I left home when I was 16.

- [Nasir] How come you left home?

- [Aaron] It was just, like, I just wanted

to be on my own two feet.

First house I moved into,

there's was guys that were doing crime.

And, yeah, I wasn't really into doin' crime. (laughing)

(murmuring)

And the next house ended up being a junkie shootin' gallery.

At the time, I was doin' a lotta acid, smokin' a lotta pot.

I tried speed a couple a times,

and then, you know, people comin' down off the speed

decide they'll get heroin to help 'em come down.

- [Nasir] Oh, wow.

- [Aaron] I sorta sat in on onAarone of their sessions

and saw how they done it.

Basically, it was just seein' people doin' it

in a nice way, like a doctor would.

It sorta seemed like it was okay.

And I thought, well, I might as well give that a try.

I've tried this, so I'll see what that's like.

- [Nasir] Oh.

- I reckon personally the speed

was worse for me, 'cause of the psychosis.

I nearly went two weeks straight with no sleep.

I think I slept for like 72 hours or something.

Yeah. (laughing)

Well, we you kinda tried to stop usin' drugs,

but all the people around us were all doin' it.

Yeah. (murmuring)

I was always, had confidence problems, you know.

Never had much self-confidence.

- [Nasir] Why not?

- [Aaron] I don't know.

I was worried too much about what other people

thought of me.

- [Nasir] When did you move to Melbourne?

- Was just a sudden thing.

As soon as we found the news

that my girlfriend got pregnant, we basically,

if we stayed in Brisbane, we wouldn't of gotten far.

We were trapped in the circle too much.

- Do you think it was a good decision to come to Melbourne?

- Yeah, it definitely was.

Clean slate, fresh start, get away

from all the influences, start a new life.

It's only being in Footscray

that we've been fully embraced.

There's something about Footscray, man?

- Yeah, yeah, I think so. (laughing)

- I love this place.

Was it was good, 'cause you guys

both motivated each other to stop?

- Well, we both kinda offered each other support

and strength, and we kinda got through it, you know.

- Yeah, okay.

- Yeah.

- Got you.

I think Aaron and I are able to share a beautiful thing,

and that's the fact that we were able

to have a great support system in our road to recovery.

It's been a very long recovery for Aaron.

However, for the past few years,

he's really gotten a hold of his substance problems.

And, you know, he's able to come out clean.

He showed us his house,

and we actually got to see where he lives now.

We met his partner and his two kids.

And he lives in a much more affordable area.

He beams happiness, and I love it.

(moves into funky mystic music)

And as the sun was setting, it was a beautiful way

to finish off the day by giving him a haircut.

- Things have gone better since you've decided to quit?

Or the hard drugs and stuff?

- Oh, definitely, yeah.

It's been rough and it is hard, don't get me wrong.

Knowin' that you can get it whenever you want it

is also a problem, and the temptation's always there.

That's one of the worst parts of recovery,

I think, is tryin' to, you know,

keeping yourself busy and doin' things.

I think that's the main thing.

(buzzing)

Yeah, I've tried Methadone.

- Man, that's hectic.

- Yeah, that was the worst thing I'd ever done.

'Cause tryin' to come off that took months to get over.

- Yeah, people don't understand,

like, the downfall with Methadone.

- Oh, it leeches into your bones

and you just ache for months.

And you feel sick for months, and you can't do anything.

It ruined all my teeth.

And my teeth were already stuffed

from all the speed I'd done in the past.

- Yeah?

- Oh, constant grinding, being awake too long, you know.

(buzzing)

I was always gettin' infections and putting up with pain.

- [Nasir] This is with your teeth?

- Yeah.

I just used to be silent.

I wouldn't wanna talk to people,

or I wouldn't really wanna laugh or smile.

- [Nasir] Why?

- Because I was worried that they would see

my rotting stumps, and, yeah.

- [Nasir] Wow, it was that bad, huh?

- Yeah, it was really that bad.

Yeah, it's was just horrible little cracked bits

of teeth and no full teeth at all.

And, yeah, I just was never happy. (laughing)

- So then what'd you do to help yourself out?

- (humming) I booked myself into the dental hospital

and got them all removed.

- Yeah?

- And I waitin' for a new set a dentures now.

- You feel confident?

- I do, surprisingly.

I thought I would feel worse,

but I actually feel 110% better. (laughing)

- Really?!

- Yeah.

I just don't care what other people think.

I'm happy now, and that's sorta what counts.

Living with no pain is amazing.

(buzzing) - [Nasir] That's amazing.

I love that a lot, man.

- Yeah.

- [Nasir] Has that helped with other areas of your life,

feeling more confident about certain things, like--

- Oh, yeah.

It's just opened many doors.

- [Nasir] Yeah?

- Like, yeah, I'm about to start a new job, I think.

I think it's only casual to start off with,

but we'll see how it goes.

- Cool.

So what led to this positivity, man?

- Oh, I think--

Amidst all the hardships and hard times

you've gone through in your life?

- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I just think just knowing, you know,

your family's there, and they love you,

and they support you.

In pain for so long, I never thought

things would get better.

And man, my whole life has changed so much. (laughing)

You know?

It's always sorta, I've been positive,

but always look for the worst kinda things--

- True.

- In a positive situation. (laughing)

- True.

And it wasn't until you had to go through horrible moments

in your life for you to do the opposite, eh?

- Yeah.

Pretty much, yeah.

- That's insane. (laughing)

- Yeah, no lookin' back. (laughing)

- [Nasir] True.

- [Aaron] No goin' back either. (laughing)

- [Nasir Voiceover] Yeah, true.

That's even more important, isn't it?

Yeah, it feels like I've gotten out of a hole.

And now I'm sort of climbing that mountain. (laughing)

POLICE DEPARTMENTS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THE

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT UNDER THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION WOULD DO

ITS OWN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION OF THESE POLICE

DEPARTMENTS AND MAKE SURE JUSTICE IS SERVED.

SO MOVING

FORWARD IN THIS ADMINISTRATION IT WILL BE AN ISSUE.

HOWEVER

THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF HOPE WHEN IT COMES TO PREVIOUS

NEGOTIATIONS THAT THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT HAD MADE WITH POLICE

DEPARTMENTS UNDER THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION.

WHEN TRUMP GOT

ELECTED, POLICE DEPARTMENTS WHO HAD MADE THESE AGREEMENTS WITH

THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TO REFORM THEIR DEPARTMENTS WERE LIKE, OH,

MAYBE WE CAN RENEGE ON SOME OF THESE NEGOTIATIONS, MAYBE WE CAN

SAY THAT WE DON'T WANT TO DO THESE THINGS, WE DON'T WANT TO

REFORM OUR DEPARTMENT, AND TRUMP WILL DO US A SOLID.

BUT THE BEST

PART ABOUT ALL OF THAT IS THAT FEDERAL JUDGES ARE GETTING

INVOLVED AND THEY ARE LIKE, NO.

BECAUSE FEDERAL JUDGES ARE

INVOLVED IN RULING WHETHER OR NOT THEY CAN CHANGE SOME OF THE

NEGOTIATIONS THEY HAD PREVIOUSLY MADE.

SO THE JUDGES ARE SAYING,

NO, THESE NEGOTIATIONS, THESE AGREEMENTS WILL REMAIN INTACT,

AND THEY CAN'T CHANGE IT.

SO ANY PROGRESS THAT WAS MADE UNDER THE

OBAMA ADMINISTRATION WILL REMAIN IN PLACE, I WANT TO GIVE

YOU THE FULL STORY.

THAT IS A GOOD SILVER LINING BUT I'M STILL

INCREDIBLY PESSIMISTIC.

YOU SHOULD BE.

THE NEGOTIATIONS ALREADY DONE WITH BALTIMORE AND CHICAGO,

THOSE MIGHT BE CARRIED OUT AND CONTINUED -- I SEE THE CURRENT

STATE OF NEGOTIATIONS WITH THOSE CITIES AS BABY STEPS, PATCHING

IN SOME OF THE CRACKS.

BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT LEAVES TONS OF

OTHER CITIES WITH MAJOR PROBLEMS BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THEIR

CONSTITUENTS THAT HAVEN'T BEEN ADDRESSED, AND FURTHER EFFORTS

WE NEED TO UNDERTAKE IN THOSE CITIES.

OF COURSE AT THE STATE

LEVEL AND THE CITY LEVEL PROGRESS CAN STILL BE MADE, AND

HOPEFULLY POLITICIANS WILL PUT PRESSURE ON THESE POLICE

DEPARTMENTS TO REFORM.

BUT OVER THE PAST EIGHT YEARS UNDER

OBAMA, SLOWLY AT THE START, ADMITTEDLY, THERE WAS PRESSURE

AT THE TOP, AND ERIC HOLDER DID GET INVOLVED AND THERE WERE SOME

INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATIONS OF SOME OF THESE SHOOTINGS THAT

STATES AND CITIES DIDN'T WANT TO UNDERTAKE.

AND DESPITE THAT WE

STILL HAD VERY LITTLE PROGRESS.

UP UNTIL RIGHT NOW, WE STILL

HAVE COPS WHO CAN SHOOT PEOPLE BASICALLY IN COLD BLOOD AND THEY

WALK FREE.

THERE IS ALMOST NEVER JUSTICE IN THAT REGARD.

BUT WE

WERE STARTING TO GET SOME THINGS, INVESTIGATIONS OF THE

VANS THAT WERE USED TO SHAKE UP OR INJURE OR KILL SUSPECTS, BODY

CAMERAS STARTING TO SPREAD, THERE WERE RUMBLINGS OF

POSSIBLE CIVILIAN-LED POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN SOME AREAS, THAT

CAN CONTINUE BUT WE HAVE KNEE- CAPPED THAT EFFORT.

SO NOW

BECAUSE OF PROGRESS TO SOME EXTENT BEING DRIVEN FROM THE

TOP, WE WILL HAVE ROADBLOCKS SET UP BY PEOPLE LIKE JEFF SESSIONS
