Hi everyone, my name is Caroline and today I'm going to be talking about the
worst books in 2017. So, these are not books that were published this year
though they may have been, I don't think any of them were actually, now that I'm
thinking about it. They're just books that I read this year
that I thought were the worst out of my 103 books I have read so far this year.
These are the ones that I felt the worst about, whether I was grossed out or
whether I felt like I had no connection to it. And I'm just gonna go into it, and
I hope you guys will stick around. And please be nice in the comments because
we all have our own opinions, and though mine might seem a little bit dramatic
I want to voice them. And I should be posting a best books of 2017 soon, if
that is not our out already, so be sure to look out for that. So if you want to

is posted as well. So yes! Let's go and see the worst books of 2017. For the
first one is Of fire and Stars by Audrey Colhurst. I know that some people love this
book, and I know a minority of people hated it. For me,
it's set in a fantastical world and it's like a woman loving woman story, but
it's also supposed to be about magic and ruling things and that nature, but I
didn't get any of that. It was very confusing. It doesn't feel
like the author knew what the world was gonna be about, she wanted to use it as a
vehicle for the romance. And the romance was fine, but it wasn't good. Like it
wasn't really believable to me, and it was just that was kind of what the book
was resting upon, and for me it didn't really deliver. And that was sad, because
I know so many bisexual people out there want good representation. But I felt like
this book was just lacking in every aspect, and I'm sad to say that it didn't
live up to the hype for me. I don't know what I gave it, I might have given
it two stars. I think I did a review of it on
Goodreads, and if I did I will link it down below. And if I did not, just forget
I said that. But moving on to the next one, so many people have great things to
say about this book and its sequel and it's soon to be trequel? But this book?
No, I did not like it. Okay, this is one of the more controversial ones. We're moving
on to the second one I read this year, Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and
Amie Kaufman. Illuminae is the story of Kady and Ezra as they are forced apart
in this futuristic world where they are living in space, and there's a disaster
on of the spaceships, and there's a like a plague, and there's lots of other
things going on that is kind of somehow amounting to this disaster, so they have to
find their way back to each other and they have to save their people. I wanted
to love this book, I really did. The moment I saw it with its cover all over
YouTube last year, I wanted to read it. Or 2015 even? Okay, about it in 2016 I'm
pretty sure. But I didn't get to it for like the entire year, and I read it in
January of this year, I believe. And I just... I had such a hard time getting
through it. Everyone said that the plot pulls you, you're in suspense about
what's happening and everything is so great and it's action-packed, and it's
like thrilling. I couldn't get into it, like I said before, and really I didn't
think that mixed-media added anything, if anything it made me feel more distant
from the characters. I tend to like books where I feel as though the
character's like me or the character you know... has characteristics! But with this
book, it was so hard to figure out who these characters were, and I couldn't
like read it from one of them, one of their perspectives, because it was
just like texting or lists of names of dead people. And as much as I wanted to
love this mixed-media book, I couldn't connect to the characters which
didn't make me enjoy the story. And then we got to the end, I was like wait. So
what was this book about? Where is it going? I really don't want to pick up the
next book, and I'm glad that I didn't pay for the signed copy, because I think I
would have been more disappointed, and I wouldn't have felt like I could give it
away. So yeah. Beautiful cover, probably why I got in the first place. Like look
at that! And look at that! It's starries! My point is everyone has different opinions,
and for me, I just could not get into this book at all. And that's where I'm
leaving it. I'm not gonna continue with the series, I don't know if I'll like the
books published by the authors. I've heard Maddie from The Book Pusher talk
about how much she loves Jay Kristoff and she really loves his series, Never Night.
But I don't know if I'll get to it, I don't know if I can. I don't know if I
like his writing because I haven't seen his writing! I've just seen multi-- Okay,
you know what? I'm just blabbing. Let's go to the next one! Another book that I
think was one of the worst books I've read in 2017, possibly ever, honestly. Peter
Pan! By J. M. Barrie. I know! How could you hate such a classic, Caroline? How
could you hate this beautiful book with this beautiful cover? With its story
about Neverland and being young forever and defying the pirates. And blah, blah. I
could not support this book because I know that... I know logically it was published in like
the early 20th century, and there's a difference between now and then. So
there's a lot of using slurs, or referring to Native Americans as
something else, which is not great. Whenever I saw Wendy in the book, I felt
like they were literally only looking to her as a mother. She's not really given
any personality. She... it seemed like she's taking care of her children.
I felt so misogynistic to me, and then Peter... I was like wait? Why are you rooting
for him? He's the one who's been messing with Captain Hook! Captain Hook did
nothing to him. Like, literally nothing. And then Peter just starts attacking him,
then wanting to kill him and all of his crew, and I'm like wait! Why would I
possibly be supporting this douche? He also kills the boys in his crew before
they get too old. So like... I, I just couldn't connect with it. I hated it! The
words that he used to describe people such as the Native Americans. First of
all, why were there Native Americans in this magical world? Please explain that
to me. I just... I didn't like the way he portrayed women. I didn't like the way he
betrayed anyone marginalized, and I hated Peter. Which is sad! Because one of my
favorite web series that I found earlier this year is the New Adventures of Peter
and Wendy, which is why I picked this up in the first place. I think I did a
review of this as well on my Goodreads, which I will have linked below if I did
it. If I didn't, then now you know how I feel about it,
and apparently, I didn't go into any more specifics. The next one we have is Before I
Fall by Lauren Oliver. Before I Fall is the story of a girl who dies in a car
crash, and she wakes up and lives the same day again, and she has to figure out
what she needs to do different, to get herself out of this continuous loop. So, I
wanted to watch the movie, because my girl is in it. And if you need
to ask who my girl is, you don't know how obsessed I am with the Vampire Academy
series. Zoey Deutch played Rose in the Vampire Academy adaptation. Not a good
movie, she did great, and I've sort of supported her ever
since. And then, I wanted to see this movie because of her. And it looked okay!
But I was listening to the book audiobook, and the language that was used,
and how boring the book was as we went through this Groundhog Day scenario like
five seven times before the character actually got what she was supposed to do?
And it just was so boring and I didn't like the way that she portrayed teenage
girls, and I just didn't enjoy the book and it kind of made me groan. I don't
think that I really like Lauren Oliver books. I don't think I'll continue to
read her books. I just did not like it. I did not feel like I should have wasted
my time reading it, honestly. I should have just read something better. The last
book in my worst books of 2017 will come as no surprise to those who have watched
my channel fairly recently. I kind of had a little ranty review going on with
the series. Haunted by Meg Cabot, the fifth book in the Mediator series, and
it's the penultimate book. I can't really say much without spoiling the entire
series, but I will say that there's a character in this book who kind of
sexually assaults the main character and then the main character lets him, and
thinks that she has feelings for him. It made me feel sick to have the author
justify it and say that he's okay, and acting this way, you know that's what
boys do when they like somebody. Or like, he's a bad boy, I shouldn't like it, but
I do. And I have a review about this that I did which I will link down below, and
if you want to see it, you can, but I will say... I will say that I do spoil the
series but I did mention more about how this unnerved me. And I gave it, I think,
like one star. Which will tell you! I loved this series the beginning, but when
I got to like the fourth and the fifth book, I just wanted to finish it so that
I could have a view of this series so that I can make a review and get over
with it, and never have to read it again. Despite how much I love Meg Cabot's
other books, it saddened me so much that this did not live up to its potential,
and it just made me really upset, honestly. Thank you so much for watching
