In this episode I'm going to try the Mercedes-Benz
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC.
That's its adaptive cruise control
and also steering assist.
Hi.
Hi, Derek. - Nice to see you.
- Shall we try this? - Yes, sure. Welcome!
- So, what is Active Distance Assist, or DISTRONIC?
- DISTRONIC is an adaptive cruise control, of course,
with a lot of subfeatures.
For example, with the steering assist we have,
it will assist you in staying in the middle of the lane.
It also adapts to the detected speed limits,
for example now we have the 70,
the camera picks that 70 up and if somebody
is slower than the speed limit, obviously,
the car will slow down to that.
You can adjust the distance to the car ahead,
time wise with the inner button next to the set
to the right one.
You can either get closer or...
- This adjusts the distance to the car...
- Yeah, you can see it here on the instrument, yeah.
The distance, now it's an intermediate distance.
- So now I'm short... - How do you feel comfortable.
- I'm shortening the distance, so it's gonna bring us
closer to that car. - It'll be about one second
distance, which gives the car enough time to react.
- So with steering assist, it means that...
- You can probably feel it, yeah,
the car actually steers. - If I didn't steer,
the car would maintain the lane.
Within certain limits because it's an assistance
system and we want you to always know you're in charge,
just like in real life, the assistant does all the work,
or much of the work, but you have the responsibility.
Okay and now it knows from the navigation that we
have to turn left.
Of course the main road would go straight,
but if you'll indicate now and you can see
the car already slows down.
Oh yeah.
It prepares for that turn.
It prepares for the turn, it even shows you.
Okay. Exactly, but of course
you have to watch the right of way.
So if somebody came across here,
you would have to brake.
But now you don't, which you did,
because you're used to it.
Just in case, I don't know how much
to trust this system, you know?
I will tell you when not.
So this system makes it so I really don't
have to touch that many controls?
- Yeah, you just have to... - The pedals, or you know,
just a little bit on the
the steering wheel. - On the steering, you
keep an eye on the steering, exactly.
- I focus on the traffic, the other parts of the road.
Exactly.
I noticed the car sometimes alerts me to
put my hands back on the wheel.
Exactly. What's that all about?
We remind you frequently that you are still
in charge of steering.
We support you, but you are in charge.
And you're in sports mode now once we are on
the autobahn, we can do another feature which
we call the Active Lane Change Assist,
where all you have to do is turn on your
indicator and then the car looks for an open
spot within the next 10 seconds.
If it's open or ready, it will change, it will tell you.
If it's not open, it'll wait and if it can
change lanes within the next 10 seconds,
it'll turn on the light, flashers and change
lanes comfortably.
- So... - Okay, you could just feel.
- Is it going to do that. - You're pulling over, yep.
It tells you lane change to the left, okay?
You can accelerate.
And it watches for faster cars in the back.
That car was not fast enough, it allowed for that.
And when you're next to this, just turn to the right.
Okay, turn on the indicator, and now it's gray
and once it's free it turns on the flashers again,
turns green, tells you lane change to the right,
and here you go.
Fantastic.
Take a left here.
They won't let you drive in.
