GROCERY STORES in Germany!!! 6 Things to Know Before You Go Shopping - Duration: 6:41.

I already made a video about some of the bigger differences that I've noticed between grocery

stores in the U.S. and stores Germany, and I'll link to that down below.

But there are also a lot of smaller differences that I think are just as interesting and hopefully

helpful to know too.

Hey everyone! I'm Dana and you're watching Wanted Adventure Living Abroad.

The opening times in Germany don't seem to differ that much from in the U.S. In Germany, 7 a.m.

is a pretty common opening time, and 10 or 11 p.m. pretty common closing times, except

for in Bavaria and Saarland, where shops must close by law by 8 p.m.

And the other big difference here is that all over Germany most grocery stores are closed

on Sunday, whereas from what I can remember, where I've lived in the U.S., they're

open every day, and some stores are even open 24/7.

So they're open all the time.

Okay, the store is open, we're in the store, let's grab a cart.

I hope that you have some coins if we're in Germany, because, as I mentioned in my

Not Free in Germany, But Free in the USA video, in Germany, the carts are strung together,

and to get a cart you put a coin in and then when you leave the store, you put the cart

back and you get your coin back.

Interestingly, some people commented on that video that in the U.S. the store Aldi also

does that with the carts.

Which actually makes a lot of sense since Aldi is a German grocery store.

One of the first areas you come to in many grocery stores is the fruit and veggie area,

known collectively as the produce department.

In some stores in Germany you just grab your produce, pop it into a bag, and put it in your cart.

Which is how it's been done in the stores that I've been to in the U.S.

But I have been surprised a few times here in Germany when in some stores you actually

have to weigh your own produce and then pick out what kind of food it is from a little

computer, and then you print out a sticker with the price on it to put on the bag.

If you forget to do this in one of these stores where you have to do this, when you get to

the checkout line, the cashier probably won't be too happy with you.

And neither will the other people glaring in line behind you.

Yeah, I'm no stranger to that uncomfortable experience.

And I try really hard not to make that mistake anymore.

And, as far as which fruits and vegetables are available, when I first moved to Germany

7 years ago, I did notice that, whereas in the U.S. you could often get a lot of fruits

and veggies year-round, here in Germany there were more defined seasons.

But I would say that now the two countries are getting more similar in this regard.

I see fresh raspberries and strawberries, for example, right now in stores in Munich.

Even though it's the beginning of March and nowhere near berry season in Germany.

After all of the differences that I've already mentioned, I still think that the one that

I found most shocking was the first time that I saw eggs just sitting out in the store here

in Germany, not refrigerated.

Isn't someone going to put these things away?

Won't this cause me to get sick or something?

The first time that I saw this, I just thought that some careless store employee had completely

forgotten the eggs in the middle of the store because in the U.S., the eggs are kept in

the refrigerated section.

Nope, turns out that eggs are just processed differently in Germany and the U.S., and that's

why they're able to be kept out in the stores in Germany, but they're refrigerated in

stores in the U.S.

In Germany some drinks are sold in individual bottles, but then there's also a section

with bottles in cartons.

So rather than buy one or two bottles separately, you can buy a carton of 12 bottles.

And, unlike in the U.S., in Germany the sales tax of an item is included

in the price on the label.

But watch out because in Germany the recycling fee for bottles, called "Pfand," is not included

in the price that is shown.

A lot of bottles in Germany have an extra fee on top of the price.

And I've noticed that 25 cents is pretty common.

You get that extra fee back when you bring back the empty bottle and recycle it in the machine.

When you buy a carton of bottles, you pay the bottle fee per bottle, and also a charge

for borrowing the carton itself, which you also get back when you bring back the container.

While we're on drinks, in Germany you can buy alcoholic drinks, so wine, vodka, beer,

everything, in the grocery store.

In the U.S. it varies around the country.

In some places you can buy wine at the supermarket, while in other places you have to go to a

liquor store, which is often conveniently located right next to the grocery store.

And in some places in the U.S. there are particular times when you're not allowed to buy alcohol.

So then during those times, if a store does carry some kind of alcoholic beverage, I can

remember seeing these big cloth drapes covering up those sections in the store.

Pregnancy hormones - Hormones during pregnancy - Duration: 5:10.

Hormones That Rule Your Pregnant Life.

It doesn't seem quite fair to accuse your hormones of causing every bloat, blemish and

emotional outburst during pregnancy.

But the truth is, the potent cocktail of chemicals really is guilty as charged.

And everything that's happening to your body these days — both the good and the not-so-good

— can be pinned on them.

Here are the important hormones involved in your pregnancy.

Number 1.

FSH.

Follicle stimulating hormone is the first in a cascade of hormones that's necessary

to launch your pregnancy and is present before you even conceive.

Number 2.

LH: Luteinizing hormone works in concert with FSH to orchestrate your menstrual cycle.

Both FSH and LH are inactive during pregnancy itself.

Number 3.

hCG.

Once egg meets sperm, human chorionic gonadotropin steps in to amp up the production of estrogen

and progesterone.

It also suppresses your immune system to support your growing baby.

HCG is the key hormone that's present during pregnancy.

It's produced by what ultimately becomes the placenta.

Its basic job is to tell a woman's body that there is a life form growing in her womb and

that her body needs to build a nest for it.

HCG also tells the ovaries to shut off the production line of maturing an egg every month.

Levels rise eight days after ovulation, peak at 60 to 90 days and then lower slightly,

leveling off for the remainder of the pregnancy.

Typically, during the first 10 weeks of your pregnancy HCG levels double every two days.

HCG circulates through the body and is eliminated in the urine (which is what over-the-counter

pregnancy tests are looking for -- a high concentration of beta HCG in the urine that

indicates you are, indeed, pregnant).

Number 4.

Progesterone.

Progesterone is made early in pregnancy by a cyst on the ovary called the corpus luteum.

The corpus luteum continues to produce progesterone until about 10 weeks, when its production

is taken over by the placenta.

In the first trimester, levels of progesterone rise exponentially, and then they plateau.

Progesterone does some very important jobs along the way: It keeps the uterus muscle

relaxed and plays a role in the immune system helping the body tolerate foreign DNA (that

is, the fetus).

Progesterone relaxes all smooth muscle (most important, the muscle wall of the uterus or

"womb") in the body.

It also leads to relaxation of the blood vessels throughout the body, prompting lower than

normal blood pressure and occasionally dizziness, as well as all the not-so-fun gastrointestinal

symptoms of pregnancy that include heartburn, reflux, belching, nausea, vomiting, gas, and

constipation.

Progesterone can also increase hair growth -- you may notice unwanted hair on your breasts

and lower abdomen, for example.

Number 5.

Estrogen.

Like progesterone, estrogen is secreted by the corpus luteum until the placenta takes

over.

This pregnancy hormone plays a key role in the development of the fetus, with several

organs and other bodily systems in the fetus triggered into development by estrogen.

Once you've reached the end of the first trimester, your body has higher levels of circulating

estrogen, and then the levels plateau.

The role of estrogen is super-important: It helps to stimulate hormone production in the

fetus's adrenal gland, it stimulates growth of the adrenal gland, and it enhances the

mother's uterus, enabling it to respond to oxytocin.

Number 6.

Relaxin.

This hormone is known mostly for relaxing your muscles, bones, ligaments and joints

later in pregnancy in preparation for labor.

Number 7.

Placental growth factor.

By promoting blood vessel growth, this hormone supports the increased blood volume necessary

to nourish your baby.

Number 8.

HPL.

Human placental lactogen prepares your breasts to breastfeed.

Along with placental growth factor, it's produced by the placenta to adjust your body's

metabolism to feed your baby.

In some women, HPL and placental growth factor are thought to block insulin, resulting in

gestational diabetes.

Number 9.

Oxytocin.

Though it's present throughout your pregnancy, this muscle-contracting hormone is mostly

known for stimulating labor contractions.

Number 10.

Prolactin.

This hormone causes your breasts to increase in size and eventually produce milk.

They might not sound the same, but we can't be far from a seriously quick electric hatch that ticks all the boxes.

One of the most exciting concepts at the Geneva Motor Show was the Renault E-Sport, the cute but not that exciting Zoe electric car turned into a monster.

Renault knows how to make a mid-engined hot hatch, and their electric alternative doesnt disappoint. At 3.2 seconds to 62mph, its actually quicker off the line than a Formula-E car.

Of course the main problem with electricity is the weight penalty courtesy of the battery packs, and hot hatches are supposed to be light. The Zoe E-Sport hides 992 lbs.

worth of lithium ion batteries, as well as two electric motors for a max output of 460 horsepower and 472 ft.lb of torque.

Using carbon fiber and kevlar all around while getting rid of the Zoes rear seats, Renaults engineers managed to end up with a supermini weighing 3086 lbs.

Thats not brilliant, but given the more than adequate power figures, not that bad either, especially knowing that the two-seater Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S is only 203 lbs. lighter. Thats not more than what a tall, thin man weights.

The BMW i3 has proven that driving small electric cars can be a lot of fun. Now, our body is ready for something more radical. Renault, would you be so.
