Today, a equipment that target an important gap in the digital amps and effects emulation
market. Small to take it anywhere, powerful enough for not disappoint, we can use both
to play live and for our home studio, at an unbeatable price: the Mooer GE 200.
When choosing our digital modeling equipment, we have a wide range of products, but many
of them have a price that beyond our possibilities. We will not fooled, their quality and performance
are beyond doubt, and worth that price for something, but maybe for the use that we are
going to give it is a excessive expense, we don't need all possibilities, or we find
that they are too complex to configure. We could say that the Mooer GE 200 is a gateway
to the world of digital modeling, which renounces a few of the benefits of other equipment to
provide us a small size, ease of use and a contained price.
Among its strengths, besides the price, it allows configure user presets and play live
with a pedalboard with three illuminated buttons, also act as USB audio interface for recording
your guitar at home, and you can load IR's as professional equipments.
The construction is metallic, and it seems to be robust. If you are thinking take from
gig to gig, trust me it is an area in which to look out when buying a equipment. It has
a basic wiring system with a stereo output that can connect to an amplifier, mixer or
FRFR speaker. I have not found a simple way to do things like four wire connection to
an amplifier. As I said before, the Mooer looks for simplicity of use.
Also, if you already have a high end equipment, the Mooer GE 200 can be a good choice as backup
for concerts, because as occupies little space it can take anywhere easily, and if you have
problems with your main equipment, you know you have a spare hand that will sound with
dignity. The power supply facilitates this, because it is 9 volts compatible with most
pedals on the market, and consumption is not excessive, 600 milliamps. That means that
you can integrate into your regular pedalboard.
Is fairly complete in terms of emulations: 55 amps, 70 effects of all kinds including
a looper, 16 cabinets with ten microphones in which we can change its position relative
to center of speaker and distance, and ability to load up to 10 IR's. You can store 200 presets,
I think it's enough, and through the USB connection serves as an audio interface. And
one of the things I have more fun: a drum with 40 patterns to play with you.
The GE 200 is compared to the size of the equipments that I have worked so far, very
small, although its usability has not been compromised. This is because instead of taking
ten or twelve buttons it takes three, but of adequate size and separation between them.
And tells you someone who has no small feet. The configuration screen is full color, and
with a push wheel we will virtually do everything needed for configuration. I like also wearing
a row of illuminated buttons to accelerate settings.
The screen is wide enough to edit with ease, and also to play live viewing the preset you
have selected. The buttons for the foot are large, seem resistant, and are illuminated.
The expression maybe is somewhat small for me, but is also true that I am accustomed
to traditional wah pedals, quite large, which fits my whole foot. But if they had put a
big pedal, the equipment would no longer be so small, of course. When moving it, I feel
comfortable and with good feelings.
At the rear we can connect an additional expression pedal. I still doubt, as other brands that
include this feature, if all models in the market will be fully compatible, although
I have seen that there is a section in the configuration that allows calibrate the pedals,
which surely will make easy to adapt almost every of them.
Both the jack to connect an external audio source such as a mobile to play on a backing
track for example, as the headphone output have small 3.5 jack, while the guitar input
and the two output audio connectors have the ¼ usual jack. These two audio outputs we
can use it as a stereo output, a single output to mono using the left, or a double mono output
where on each of the outputs we can activate speaker emulation separately to connect to
an amplifier and a mixer simultaneously.
There are two working modes, that we select by pressing these buttons. The PLAY mode we
use when we play live, and the CHAIN mode to configure presets. I also like this detail,
many configuration options have a button that streamlines use.
In PLAY mode, the display shows the number and name of preset and some useful data such
as volume we have set for the preset at the top, because each preset can have a different
volume, what role we have assigned to expression pedals, and if the left and right outputs
have enabled speaker simulation. In addition to the volumes that we assign to the presets,
the Mooer GE 200 has a overall volume wheel affecting all presets, which will be very
useful to level our volume with the rest of the band to play live, or to regulate it when
we connect to a mixer.
There is an important parameter that can be edited right here, the preset volume. To do
this press the VALUE wheel to position on the volume section, we turn to change the
value and press again to fix it. Once changed press SAVE if you want save it.
With the first two footswitches we can change the preset, up or down the list. There is
a second mode of operation, quite interesting, where we can preselect the preset first, and
then activate it by pressing the TAP button. We can serve, when we're playing live, jump
from one preset to another when they are not in order.
Normally the third button is used to turn on or off the blocks we choose in the preset.
In this way we can activate the distortion pedal, an equalizer and a delay, for example,
for our solo. Letting down the TAP TEMPO activated, it synchronizes the tempo of the effects at
each pulsation that we do. Thus we sync the delay replays with the time we are playing.
Pressing at the same time the two buttons on the left activate the tuner, which as usual
can be configured to silent or not the sound of the guitar while tuning. And pressing the
two buttons on the right we enter the 52 seconds looper, with which we can record and play
up.
Pressing the CHAIN button we enter in the creating and editing presets screen. A preset
is equivalent to the path that follows the sound of your guitar, including effects, amplifier
and speaker. Each effect type has a button to activate or deactivate it below the screen.
I like to have these buttons that accelerate the editing of presets.
If you've seen other modeling equipment, such as AXE or HELIX, here we find differences
that are part of concessions need to be done to keep the equipment in levels of ease of
editing and price you have. The preset can only have one effect of each type. You can
not put two delay effects one after another, for example. If you are of those who build
very complex presets, you must take this into account.
We will choose an empty preset, this one for example. Now we have to turn the effects we
want in our chain. We will add an amplifier. To edit a block, click on he lit button in
its category, and the chosen amplifier is displayed, and its parameters. Changing the
amp model is as simple as positioning in this top box turning the VALUE wheel, click on
it to edit, modify with the wheel again, and press again to deselect. This is the editing
mode we will use everywhere, so it will be all you have to learn. To return to the main
screen press the CHAIN button.
Now let's choose a cabinet. We activate the loudspeaker block, and repeat the above operation.
You will see that in the case of speakers you can change not only the microphone that
you use to capture sound, but its distance and position relative to center of the speaker,
that change the speaker sound as if were moving a real microphone on front of the cone.
To complete the preset, let's add a reverb, delay, an equalizer, wah and distortion.
The order in which they appear by default is quite logical, though like most of us we
like to put the effects in a different order we can change the order of the blocks, and
the final sound, as would happen in reality, it would not be the same. With the VALUE wheel
we chose the block you want configure. I will move the equalizer at the end of the chain.
Select by clicking on it (color changes to red), and we can move along the chain. Press
again to leave it fixed in its new position.
What I want do is leave the basic sound of the amplifier to the song you are playing,
and when you want to do a solo, turn on distortion, wah, delay and equalization at a time. To
do this we have the CTRL / TAP button right next the CHAIN button to select the function
you perform when pushing the footswitch: TAP TEMPO or turn on and off blocks. We chose
CTRL, and then select the blocks that are turned on or off by pressing. And now we can
move from the rhythmic part to solo by pressing this button.
To save the preset press the SAVE button, select the position where you want save it,
and patiently select the letters of the name with the VALUE wheel.
There are more things to see, but we will see in other videos. What did I think about
the MOOER GE 200? A very interesting option if we don't want to spend more than what
you have on your equipment, because sounds really well. I think that this Mooer do not
intends to compete or replace the performance of other equipments, considerably more expensive,
but give a performance that many would be adequate, and others instead will miss a feature.
As I said earlier, we can see it even as a complement to other equipment that already
own.
The selling price, so I can see, it will be below 300 euros or dollars. It is one of the
strengths of this equipment. I leave the links in the description where you can buy it in
Spain and internationally.
