In this video, I'll talk about ergodic Markov chains.

First, I'll introduce some new concepts about Markov chains.

In a Markov chain, a path from state i to state j is a sequence of transitions that

begins in i and ends in j, such that each transition in the sequence has a positive

probability.

A state j is reachable from state i if there is a path leading from i to j.

Two states i and j can communicate if j is reachable from i, and i is reachable from

A set of states S in a Markov chain is a closed set if no state outside of S is reachable

from any state in S. Let's see an example.

This Markov chain has 5 states.

This is the state transition matrix.

In this example, state 3 is reachable from state 1 via the path 1–2–3.

But state 5 is not reachable from state 1.

There is no path from 1 to 5.

States 1 and 2 communicate.

We can go from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 1.

Set S1, which contains 3 states 1, 2, and 3, is a closed set.

Set S2, which contains 2 states, 4 and 5, is also a closed set.

A state i is an absorbing state if pii=1.

That means, the probability of the transition from i to itself is 100%.

If we enter an absorbing state, we will never leave the state.

An absorbing state is also a closed set containing only one state.

Here is an example.

In this Markov chain, both the first state and the last state are absorbing states.

Other states are not absorbing states.

A state i is a transient state if there exists a state j that is reachable from i, but state

i is not reachable from state j.

It means, once you leave a transient state, it is possible you will never return to this

state.

If a state is not transient, then it is called a recurrent state.

In this Markov chain, there are 3 transient states, 2, 3, and 4.

For example, we can go from 3 to 2, and then 2 to 1.

Then we get trapped in state 1 and will never come back to state 3 again.

The other two states, 1 and 5 are not transient, so they are recurrent states.

In this Markov chain, the three states on the left are all transient states.

If we go from one of these three states to one of the states on the right, we will never

come back to the left.

The three states on the right are all recurrent states.

A state i is periodic with period k, where k > 1, if k is the smallest number such that

all paths leading from state i back to state i have a length that is a multiple of k.

Absorbing states are aperiodic.

If we can return to a recurrent state at irregular times, it is aperiodic.

In this example, we have three states.

They are all recurrent states.

There is no absorbing state.

All states are periodic with a period of 3.

For example, starting from state 1, we need 3, 6, or 9 steps to come back to state 1.

The multiple is 3.

Now, let's take a look at this example.

We know that the absorbing states 1 and 5 are not periodic.

The transient states 2, 3, and 4 are not periodic because we may not come back to these states

again.

Similarly, in this example, the transient states 1, 2, and 3 are not periodic.

But the recurrent states 4, 5, and 6 are periodic and the period is 2.

If we start from any of these states, we can return to the state at time 2, 4, 6, and so

on.

If all states in a Markov chain are recurrent, aperiodic, and communicate with each other,

then this Markov chain is ergodic.

Ergodic Markov chains have some special properties, which will be introduced in another video.

Let's see some examples.

Is this Markov chain ergodic?

No, because it has some transient states, 2, 3, and 4.

And state 1 cannot communicate with state 5.

Is this Markov chain ergodic?

No, because it also has some transient states, 1, 2, and 3.

And some states cannot communicate with each other.

For example, we can go from 1 to 2, but not from 2 to 1.

Is this Markov chain represented by states 1, 2, and 3 ergodic?

Yes.

None of the states is transient.

There is no period.

And every state can communicate with other states.

What about the Markov chain represented by states 4 and 5?

Yes, it is ergodic for the same reasons.

What about the Markov chain represented by states 1 through 5?

No, it is not ergodic, because states 1, 2, and 3 cannot communicate with states 4 and

This movie of asteroid 2014 JO25 was generated using radar data

collected by NASA's Deep Space Network on April 19, 2017

starting at 7:43 p.m. PDT.

When the observations began, 2014 JO25 was 1.53 million miles

(2.47 million kilometers) from Earth.

The resolution of the radar images is

about 25 feet (7.5 meters) per pixel.

The largest of the asteroid's two lobes is estimated to be

2,000 feet (610 meters) across.

Asteroid 2014 JO25 approached to within 1.1 million miles

(1.8 million kilometers) of Earth on April 19.

There are no future flyby by 2014 JO25 as close as this one

If you provide them with almost a golf course-like look,

you're going to provide, both the parent and the student,

a sense of security.

Well, my name is Jim Lucia.

I'm the Grounds Manager here at Bryant University

in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

I've been the Grounds Manager--

this is my sixth year, but I've been

an employee on the Grounds Department

for a total of 14 years.

And my responsibility here at Bryant

is to manage 13 members of the grounds staff,

including a mechanic, throughout each season--

spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Some of the guys that came from the landscaping

end of the business told me about Walker Mowers.

I, myself, came from a golf course background,

so I knew the bigger machinery.

But then I saw a fit with the Walker Mowers

and their parents that come to the campus.

The first thing that the students and/or

The Sand Between: Camping on a Beach Outside Hong Kong - Duration: 3:06.

Let me tell you why I decided to go camping on a

beach outside Hong Kong for four days.

When I was a kid,

I hated camping on the beach.

I remember that oily and greasy sensation

of putting sunscreen on your body.

When it was really hot, the sweat started

dripping and mixing with the sunscreen

and you ran to the water for comfort.

but you could not stay in the water forever.

You know what else I hated as a kid?

Jeans and Chuck Taylors.

But that's another story.

Anyways, if you were lucky,

you had a campsite with hot water and you

could take a shower before going to sleep.

But even then, some sand would make

its way back to you,

because that is what sand does.

It finds a way to cling to things

and good luck trying to get rid of it all.

You had to sleep in a tent with sand everywhere:

inside, outside, in your sleeping bag,

your hair, and on your pillow.

And that little spot that the sunscreen

did not cover was now burning and made it

impossible to sleep in your favorite position.

Now as an adult living in the city, I worry

about things like: job security, career growth,

future well-being, relationship stability, bills,

and money, among other things.

I worry about whether my next job

will make me happy and I worry about

whether I should travel more and work less.

Sometimes I even worry about how others will

perceive what I worry about and how they will

judge the decisions I make in an effort

to rid myself of those worries.

Was that a mouthful?

I know.

And the cycle goes on and on.

So I set out to the beach, and for those four days

I only worried about the sand in my shoes,

in my clothes, in my hair, and everywhere else.

I worried about the mosquitoes that saw me as dinner

and about the flies that circled my food.

I worried about collecting wood for my fire

and about the sun burning my skin.

And I think that's what I did not realize

when I was a kid.

Perhaps, all those times that I went camping

with my parents they were never out here

for the comfort, but maybe because for a few days,

having only things like the sand between

your toes to worry about felt so good.

In this video, I'll talk about ergodic Markov chains.

First, I'll introduce some new concepts about Markov chains.

In a Markov chain, a path from state i to state j is a sequence of transitions that

begins in i and ends in j, such that each transition in the sequence has a positive

probability.

A state j is reachable from state i if there is a path leading from i to j.

Two states i and j can communicate if j is reachable from i, and i is reachable from

A set of states S in a Markov chain is a closed set if no state outside of S is reachable

from any state in S. Let's see an example.

This Markov chain has 5 states.

This is the state transition matrix.

In this example, state 3 is reachable from state 1 via the path 1–2–3.

But state 5 is not reachable from state 1.

There is no path from 1 to 5.

States 1 and 2 communicate.

We can go from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 1.

Set S1, which contains 3 states 1, 2, and 3, is a closed set.

Set S2, which contains 2 states, 4 and 5, is also a closed set.

A state i is an absorbing state if pii=1.

That means, the probability of the transition from i to itself is 100%.

If we enter an absorbing state, we will never leave the state.

An absorbing state is also a closed set containing only one state.

Here is an example.

In this Markov chain, both the first state and the last state are absorbing states.

Other states are not absorbing states.

A state i is a transient state if there exists a state j that is reachable from i, but state

i is not reachable from state j.

It means, once you leave a transient state, it is possible you will never return to this

state.

If a state is not transient, then it is called a recurrent state.

In this Markov chain, there are 3 transient states, 2, 3, and 4.

For example, we can go from 3 to 2, and then 2 to 1.

Then we get trapped in state 1 and will never come back to state 3 again.

The other two states, 1 and 5 are not transient, so they are recurrent states.

In this Markov chain, the three states on the left are all transient states.

If we go from one of these three states to one of the states on the right, we will never

come back to the left.

The three states on the right are all recurrent states.

A state i is periodic with period k, where k > 1, if k is the smallest number such that

all paths leading from state i back to state i have a length that is a multiple of k.

Absorbing states are aperiodic.

If we can return to a recurrent state at irregular times, it is aperiodic.

In this example, we have three states.

They are all recurrent states.

There is no absorbing state.

All states are periodic with a period of 3.

For example, starting from state 1, we need 3, 6, or 9 steps to come back to state 1.

The multiple is 3.

Now, let's take a look at this example.

We know that the absorbing states 1 and 5 are not periodic.

The transient states 2, 3, and 4 are not periodic because we may not come back to these states

again.

Similarly, in this example, the transient states 1, 2, and 3 are not periodic.

But the recurrent states 4, 5, and 6 are periodic and the period is 2.

If we start from any of these states, we can return to the state at time 2, 4, 6, and so

on.

If all states in a Markov chain are recurrent, aperiodic, and communicate with each other,

then this Markov chain is ergodic.

Ergodic Markov chains have some special properties, which will be introduced in another video.

Let's see some examples.

Is this Markov chain ergodic?

No, because it has some transient states, 2, 3, and 4.

And state 1 cannot communicate with state 5.

Is this Markov chain ergodic?

No, because it also has some transient states, 1, 2, and 3.

And some states cannot communicate with each other.

For example, we can go from 1 to 2, but not from 2 to 1.

Is this Markov chain represented by states 1, 2, and 3 ergodic?

Yes.

None of the states is transient.

There is no period.

And every state can communicate with other states.

What about the Markov chain represented by states 4 and 5?

Yes, it is ergodic for the same reasons.

What about the Markov chain represented by states 1 through 5?

No, it is not ergodic, because states 1, 2, and 3 cannot communicate with states 4 and

In this video, I'll talk about absorbing Markov chains and the fundamental matrix.

Many interesting applications of Markov chains involve chains in which some of the states

are absorbing and the rest are transient. This type of Markov chains are called absorbing

Markov chains. Absorbing Markov chains are not ergodic.

If we begin in a transient state, eventually we are sure to leave the transient state and

end up in one of the absorbing states. Let P be the transition matrix of a discrete-time

Markov chain with s states. The transition probability from state i to state j is denoted

by the element pij. Assume it is an absorbing chain with m absorbing

states (a1, a2, ..., am) and s – m transient states (t1, t2, ..., ts-m).

We can rearrange the state transition matrix so that the transient states come first at

the top and the absorbing states at the bottom, like this.

Matrix Q describes the transition probabilities between the transient states. Matrix R describes

the transition probabilities from transient to absorbing states. The identity matrix I

describes the transition probabilities between the absorbing states.

If we are currently in transient state ti, then the expected number of periods that we

will spend in transient state tj before being absorbed is equal to the ij th element of

the inverse matrix of I − Q. This inverse matrix is called the fundamental matrix of

the absorbing Markov chain. In this introductory course, we just provide

these results without any proof. If we are currently in transient state ti,

then the probability that we will eventually be absorbed in absorbing state aj is equal

to the ij th element of the fundamental matrix times R.

Let's see an example. This is the gambling problem we introduced in a previous video.

Suppose that you start with $20 at time 0. You bet $10 each time in a gamble.

You win with a probability of 0.3, and lose with a probability of 0.7 in each gamble.

You will continue to gamble until you have $0 or $40. $0 means you don't have any money

left. $40 means you win $20 from your opponent and the opponent does not have any money left.

The states represent the money you have after each gamble.

This is the Markov chain. There are two absorbing states, $0 and $40.

This is the state transition probability matrix. We arrange this matrix in a way that the absorbing

states $0 and $40 are at the bottom right corner. The top left corner is Q, the top

right corner is R, and the bottom left corner is 0.

Now, let's calculate the fundamental matrix. Note that this identity matrix is of the same

size as Q. That means it is a 3 by 3 identity matrix, which is different from this one.

The ij th element in this matrix represents the expected number of periods that we will

spend in transient state j before being absorbed if we are currently in transient state i.

Now, let's calculate the fundamental matrix times R.

The ij th element in this matrix represents the probability that we will eventually be

absorbed in absorbing state j if we are currently in transient state i.

Now, let's answer some questions. The first question: If you have $20 now, what

is the expected number of periods that you will have $30 in hand?

The answer is element 23 of the fundamental matrix, which is 0.52.

The second question: If you have $20 now, what is the expected number of periods that

you will be playing the game, or the game is not over? Simply put, we are trying to

understand how long the game will last. It is equal to the time you will have $10

in hand plus the time you will have $20 in hand plus the time you will have $30 in hand.

It is the sum of element 21, element 22, and element 23 of the fundamental matrix. The

answer is 3.45. Here are some more questions.

If you have $20 now, what is the probability that you will lose them all? That means, you

will be absorbed by this state, $0. The answer is element 21 of the fundamental

matrix times R. It is 84%. If you have $20 now, what is the probability

that you will end up having $40? That means, you will be absorbed by this state, $40.

The answer is element 22 of the fundamental matrix times R. It is 16%.
