CRIMINAL RUSSIA: MODERN DAY CHRONICLES
CREATORS OF THE SHOW REMINDING: 'NOBODY CAN BE FOUND GUILTY IN COMMITTING A CRIME, UNLESS IT IS DONE BY THE COURT, ACCORDING TO THE LAW'. CRIMINAL CODE OF RSFSR, ARTICLE 13.
-'Thou shalt not kill'. The 2nd Commandment sounds like this.
-One of the most terrible sins a religion considers a murder. In this case, criminal code agrees with it.
-However, not fear of God's judgement, nor Earth's judgement are not stopping humans.
-People continue to kill each other. They kill at war, and during peace time.
-Killing for money, killing for drugs, killing for revenge, killing out of jealousy.
-Well, there are so many reasons. Even simply because someone is drunk.
-In Gospel parable repentant bandit was taken to heavens. God forgave him.
-Investigators and detectives have no such right. Their task is to find the criminal.
-A Latin proverb says: 'If you want to know who did it, think about who benefits from it'.
-In 1980's, on coasts of Tikhy Don river, a series of brutal murders were committed, that couldn't be related to this ancient wisdom.
-What this criminalwas doing could not benefit a human being. It seemed like it was done by satan himself.
FOLLOWING THE TRACES OF SATAN PART - 1 (All names of the victims were changed)
-This story started in a worker town of Shakhty, which is wide spread in Russian steppes.
-Miners' town look similar everywhere.
-Following the extracting resources, they tend to spread tens of kilometers in length, they grow in width, and not in height, while basically remaining giant villages.
-At the very edge of Shakhty, located Mezhevaya Alleyway. It always had bad reputation among citizens.
-It was cloister of homeless, gypsies and drug addicts.
-Not far from there, river Grushevka flows. Which you can barely call 'a river'. Just a dirty creek.
-On December 22, 1978, on the bank, under a pedestrian bridge, a body of 9 year old girl was found.
-Her genitals were damaged, her eyes were blindfolded by a scarf.
-Cause of death was not from stab wounds, but asphyxia. The girl was simply strangled.
-They found her schoolbag down the stream.
-A witness saw a crowd from a bus, ran in a hurry towards the investigators screaming: 'Oh God! I just saw her the day before yesterday! On a bus stop!'
-After questioning her classmates, it was found, that the day before, Lena Polotnova left the lessons early, and ran somewhere in a hurry.
-The witness added:
-What am I? An idiot? I saw her in the evening. On a bus stop. Right here. In a red coat. Some guy was standing with her. Well dressed. With glasses, wearing a hat.
-He was trying to persuade her. And she was thinking. And then she nodded, like saying 'Yes. I agree'. And so they went down the alleyway. In there.
-Oh, yeah, I forgot. He had some bottles sticking up his bag.
-What next? She had this red coat. And a schoolbag.
-She remembered what he looked like very well.
-So well, that she could give a detailed description to the painter, who immediately draw the portrait of the suspected felon.
-You could clearly see on this picture a local teacher, who recently bought an old house in that exact Mezhevaya Alleyway.
-In the night of the murder, a light was on in his house.
-Simultaneously, investigation was working on other versions.
-First thing they had to do is to check in archives for people convicted for similar crimes.
-It turned out, that Alexander Kravchenko, who lived in a house that was closest to the river than any other, at some point was convicted for rape and murder of an underage.
-After a search in his house, were found things stolen from his neighbors.
-Kravchenko was arrested, and after a while confessed to the murder of Polotnova.
-The court sentenced him to death penalty.
-Rostov-On-Don. This is how full name of this city sounds.
-Rostov Don it is called by telegraph operators. 'Rostov-Daddy' - it is called in criminal circles.
-Like many cities along Russian rivers, it is spread along one of the sides - the right one.
-Left side is a place of 'out of town'. A place of beaches.
-On September 4, 1981, the police received information: On the left bank, about 50 meters (164 ft) from a road with intense traffic, was found a dead body of a naked woman.
-Witnesses could not point at the exact location of it.
-Distrust of the investigators was not unjustified. Not once these kind of things turned out to be false alarm.
-The called bodies often were some homeless people, who froze to death.
-Sometimes, if there were 2 bodies, they were both jumping up, and running away, while covering themselves.
-But this kind of things mostly happened at summer. But it was autumn. And this time everything was serious.
-A broken branch led investigators to the crime scene.
-We should admit, that for Rostov police, a murder was not something out of the ordinary.
-It was not by luck this city has a reputation of the 2nd criminal capital, after Odessa-Mamma.
-There was indeed a dead body. And it was indeed naked.
-An investigator, same as doctor, first of all thinks with his professional mind.
-An experienced officer can give an accurate diagnosis just by looking at the victim from afar: Robbery, mugging, accident...
-But this time, detectives were confused.

-In June 1982, in a forest belt, next to a highway, a body of 13 year old Lyuba Koryuk was found.
-Her mother sent the girl to nearby village for groceries. She didn't returned home.
-Ira Korablyova, 19 years old. After an argument in the family, she left her home. Her body was found in a bush, 1 km (0.62 miles) from Shakhty train station.
-Seryozha Kuznetsov, 16 years old. He ran away from school, because of constant bullying from older kids.
-His body was found in a forest belt, between stations Shakhty and Kirpichnaya.
-Olya Salmochenko, 10 years old. Went for her lesson in music school. Never returned home.
-Her body was found in a plowed field, not far from the city of Novoshakhtinsk.
-The girl's heart was cut out with a knife.
-Irina Irenkova, 13 years old. Suffered from oligophrenia. Her body was found in 'Park of aviators' in the city of Rostov-On-Don.
-Beggar Lyudmila Kashuba. Disabled since childhood, mother of 2 underage children. Her body was found in forest belt near the city of Shakhty.
-On September 4, 1983, exactly 1 year after horrible find on the left bank of the river, at the edge of Novoshakhtinsk, an unknown naked body was found.
-His identity was never determined.
-Everywhere the same signature: Attempt of sexual contact, then strikes with a knife, and damage of genitals.
-It became clear, that on the territory of the region appeared a serial killer. Fastidious, cruel, and insatiable.
-Criminal investigators decided to unite in 1 folder cases of murders Shevchenko, Koryuk, and the rest.
-To give this operation a codename, it was required to find a common characteristic: Time of day, a criminal detail, item of the environment.
-They found it - the landscape. Rostov is located in steppes, and don't have many dense forests.
-That's why, the devil was doing his black doings in scarce plantations along the roads.
-This way, operation 'Forest Belt' was created.
-In 1983, in tram depot was detained some guy named Malezhik.

-The investigation of 'Forest Belt' case came to a dead end.
-General prosecutor's office decided, that the team must be headed by an investigator on especially important cases.
-The choice fell on Issa Kostoev. Ethnic Ingush, survived resettling his whole nation to Kazakhstan steppes, he was known for being uncompromising and meticulousness,
-Kostoev at that time occupied the position of head of investigation administration assistant, in general prosecutor's office of Russia.
-Not long before, he closed a case in Rostov, related to corruption and bribery within law enforcement itself.
-He knew very well the conditions of non-stop series of murders.
-While returning to familiar Rostov, which became almost his hometown, to room 339 of central hotel, Kostoev already had in his mind a plan of actions for capturing the maniac.
-First of all, he needed to get rid of 'The Idiots'. It didn't came easy.
-This version had ardent supporters.
-Oligophrenic... Feed them, give them to drink, and they will give any testimony.
-Bring them here, and if they need to point at one of us, they will say, that he was with them as well.
-The difficulty of the case was even bigger, because there was not a single witness, not a single evidence.
-So they had to act with exclusion method.
-First of all, Kostoev highlighted a few main lines of search.
-The killer could be tracked by psychological characteristics, by outside appearance, or by his profession.
-The criminal was often taking electric trains, on route Novoshakhtinsk - Shakhty - Rostov.
-The majority of bodies were found exactly along this route. It's possible, that he works at railways.
-Bodies were also found along roads. So drivers and car owners also fall under suspicion.
-Professionalism he disembowel his victims with, could lead to a thought, that he was a professional doctor, who is driven by devil's scientific interest.
-Trickery he used to cover up his tracks, couldn't remove suspicion from police officers themselves.
-Alexander Titov, at the moment press secretary of MIA chairman of the region, at that time - a regular expert, told us:
-One of the first identikits in this crime, of operation 'Forest Belt' that was created by testimonies of 2-3 people.
-And you can see, that I look like him quite a lot. If you look briefly.
-And after a while, I realized, that I was under surveillance. Look. Maybe I look similar now as well.
-Kostoev unfolded an intense work in all these directions.
-A map of bodies location was drawn. Investigation was trying to calculate the routes of the killer.

-All roads, like Rome, led to the central Rostov railway station. Then, along the railway in the direction of Novoshakhtinsk.
-In the end of 1985, Kostoev unfolds a whole network. It seems impossible to escape it.

-They were looking closely at men's faces, checking documents, conducting surveillance on suspicious characters, establishing contacts.
-Every day Kostoev was going to certain places, where surveillance took place.
-Because, to tell you the truth, not everyone was doing their job scrupulously.
-Often, observers weren't found at their working place.
-In electric trains, following the assumed route of maniac's movement, baits were placed: Young women, dressed and make up as beggars, drunks, prostitutes.
-They were covered by officers in civilian clothes. But who could say for sure, that the cover will work. Risk was great.
-Here, a tall man in a hat sits next to woman-bait. He fits the description on the outside.
-A conversation starts. Is it really him?
-Nope. After 1 station, tall guy gets off the train. Again - a miss.
-Same kind of work was done in places with big crowds of people: At the airport, on the train station.
-Unfortunately, women and police officers were dressing for this like they were going to a parade. But the killer was looking for a victim among misfits.
-Catching on bait never brought any results.
-Remember, that many murders were committed near highways.
-The criminal could be a long-haul driver, or a driver of an intercity bus.
-165.000 drivers were checked for blood type.
-Teenagers were also acting as baits. Because homosexuals were among the main suspects.

-Kostoev was returning to crime scenes again and again, trying to find a clue, a hint, an overlooked witness.
-But it looked like satan felt all the tension, and layed low.
-During the whole 1986, he didn't committed a single murder.
-In 1987-1988, a few more victims fell into the beast's net.
-Vanya Beletsky, 12 years old. Stab wounds. Boy's mouth was filled with dirt.
-April, 1988, on a clearing, near the city of Krasny Sulin, a body of an unknown woman was found.
-Type of her wounds left no doubts - it was work of Rostov maniac's hands.
-Alyosha Voronov, 11 years old. Went to visit his grandmother. The 'wolf' was expecting him on the way.
-His body was found with amputated genitals and his belly ripped open was found in planted forest.
-Zhenya Skratov, 16 years old. Technical college student.
-Tanya Ezhova, 16 years old. VS student.
-Sasha Popov, 8 years old. Never returned home from a stroll.
-Elena Korda, 19 years old. Her little son remained an orphan.
-Alyosha Sobolev, 10 years old. Went missing.
-Vitya Petrov, 13 years old. He was with his mother on Rostov railway station. He went to have some water, and never returned.
-His body was found on the territory of Rostov's Botanical Garden.
-Upon his arrival at the crime scene, Kostoev asked, if there were any reports regarding Botanical Garden.

-The fingers of his left hand were holding a grey hair. His name was Vanya Fomichyov. He was 11 years old.
-The terrifying list went on and on. It seemed like nothing can stop the satan.
-He was like mocking Kostoev. Like he was sure of his invulnerability.
-While inspecting one of crime scenes, Kostoev saw a young woman, who was running through the forest. She was jogging.
-'There is a potential victim', - he thought. 'Could you find yourself another place for running?' - Kostoev asked.
-'None of your goddam business!' - she answered. -'God forbids it become my business'.
-In a famous movie 'Silence of the lambs', FBI tries to discover logic of a serial killer, with the help of another serial killer, who is locked in prison.
-Kostoev did something similar.
-He deaprted to the notoriously famous Novocherkassk prison, where at that moment Anatoly Slivko was waiting for his execution, who had a lot in common with Rostov's devil.
-Slivko trustfully told Kostoev about motivation of his doings.
-He was reaching sexual satisfaction, while torturing boys in pioneer uniform, and was filming all the tortures with his amateur camera.
-But there was no clear uniting characteristic in 'Forest Belt' case.
-This killer wasn't stuck on something. In his list there were boys, girls, grown women.
-But still Kostoev believed, that his troubles will bring results.
-Control at the railways continued. On big stations, officers in uniform were carrying out duties. On small ones - in civil clothes.
-The calculation was the following: Satan won't risk to commit a crime under police's nose, and he will choose for his crime scene a small station in particular.
-Police seargeant tell us:
-On November 6, I am on duty, at the station Donleskhoz, of Krasny Sulin region...
-A tall man fell into sergeant's eye sight, who came out of a forest belt. He had a sport bag on his shoulder.
-He was going towards a platform, and he fit the portrait of the criminal on the outside: Glasses, hat, tall.
-But the sergeant was puzzled by his bag in particular. You gotta be an idiot, if you put mushrooms in a soft bag. Because they will turn into rubbish.
-And there was nothing to do in this small station's region, other than pick mushrooms.
-The sergeant followed the man.

-Well, I couldn't detain him, because I had no grounds for it, as a police officer.
-And after returning to Krasny Sulin, I wrote the official report.
-On October 30, not far from that exact platform, body of 16 year old Lomov was found.
-However, investigators didn't managed to locate victim's clothes immediately.
-Kostoev ordered to search the surrounding area. The clothes were found. And not only clothes.
-A few dozens of meters away, another body was found! It was a woman. Kostoev's irritation had no limits.
-Because the platform was controlled by the police. The offender could not remain undetected! He could not evaporate in the air!
-Whoever was carrying out duties on that platfrom back then must have seen the satan.
-And so, Kostoev got on his table the report of that sergeat, where he saw an already familiar name:
-Chikatilo.
