Impulse Buying: Why You Buy Stuff You Don't Need - Duration: 6:14.

You've probably noticed that in a lot of stores,

they make you run through a gauntlet of candy bars,

nail clippers, and phone chargers before you can pay

and make your escape into the outside world.

Maybe you wonder who buys all that stuff.

Or maybe you're already unwrapping a candy bar

you had not planned to buy.

Those bins are just one of the tricks retailers use to get you to impulse buy,

where you purchase something without planning for it in advance.

That means you are spending more money than you were originally going to,

so you can see why stores would try so hard to get you to do it.

But whether their tricks work depends a lot on your personality,

and how your brain reacts to perceived gains and losses.

Impulse buyers tend to be impulsive in general, which isn't too surprising.

In a 2016 survey of nearly 1500 people,

those that said they were likely to spend a hypothetical windfall impulsively

also reported higher levels of other impulsive behavior,

like binge drinking and unprotected sex.

And a lot of psychologists think these choices

come down to the same thing: a battle between parts of your brain.

One part, called the nucleus accumbens,

activates in proportion to how excited you'll be

to have that new thing you want.

It's the same region that activates for what are known as

primary reward drives—things like food and sex.

Another part of the brain, the insula,

has a big reaction to something else: the price.

The bigger the price, the more the insula activates.

Psychologists call this reaction the "pain of paying"

because the insula also activates when we expect to be hurt physically,

and when we're exposed to negative things like horrible smells.

Meanwhile, a third region, the mesial prefrontal cortex, also plays a role—

it, too, reacts to the price, activating when you think

you've gotten a good deal.

Researchers are able to do a pretty good job

predicting whether someone will make a purchase

by comparing activation in these three regions.

But not everyone's brain reacts the same way to the same deal,

which has led some psychologists to think that

we all fall on a spectrum of "pain of paying"—

basically, how much spending money bothers us.

On one end are the spendthrifts, who just don't really feel that pain.

They think nothing of spending some extra money if they've got it.

That's what it's there for, right?

On the other end are the tightwads,

who will wait until the last minute to pull out their wallets,

even for things they definitely need—

for them, the pain of paying is more like the agony of paying.

And I know this personally.

I sweat, I get hot, I get—my armpits go.

It's, like, the least comfortable I ever am.

Spendthrifts are naturally impulsive buyers,

and not necessarily because they have more money to spend.

A 2007 survey of over 9000 people found

those at the spendthrift end of the spectrum had more credit card debt.

But even though tightwads don't like spending money,

they're more vulnerable to certain types of tricks

designed to get them spending money they don't intend to.

That's because they really feel anything

that reduces their intense pain of paying.

Since spendthrifts aren't pained anyway,

ploys to reduce pain don't work as well on them.

For example, in one 2007 study,

researchers asked 538 college students if they were

willing to pay a five dollar fee to get overnight delivery on a new purchase.

But for half the people, they called it the "small five dollar fee"

to reduce the pain of paying.

That one word didn't matter to the spendthrifts at all—

about the same amount paid the fee either way.

But just describing the fee as "small"

made the tightwads feel much better about paying the price—

about three times as many thought that it was worth it

to get the delivery overnighted.

What?

Other research has found a similar effect with using credit cards,

which are thought to reduce the pain of paying by keeping the actual,

physical money out of sight and out of mind.

In a shopping study on 125 students, paying by credit card instead of cash

didn't affect the spendthrifts' buying behaviors at all,

but tightwads were more willing to spend money

on unhealthy stuff they didn't need.

Those candy bar displays don't really reduce the pain of paying in any way,

so they're probably not the type of trick

that will get the tightwads spending more.

But sticking a bunch of tempting chocolate

in front of the spendthrifts passing through?

That might get some cash.

Your spending habits may also be influenced

by another personality trait—

whether you're what psychologists call a "maximizer" or a "satisficer."

For maximizers, decision making is never easy.

If a maximizer needs a new computer, for example,

they might open up a spreadsheet, and find all the computers on the market,

and start listing things like price, processor speed, hard drive capacity.

They're gonna watch a bunch of YouTube videos

on a bunch of different YouTube channels.

They'll weigh everything that might be important

before making their final choice.

A satisficer is the kind of person who says,

"y'know, I just need something that I can watch YouTube videos on,"

and they get the first thing that fits that description.

In other words, they go with the first thing that satisfies their requirements.

It shouldn't come as a shock that satisficers tend to spend money more impulsively,

because they make purchases more quickly than maximizers.

But the funny thing is, there's lots of research that suggests

that maximizers aren't as happy with what they buy,

and they regret their purchases more.

It's like, once they put so much thought into that mental spreadsheet

of all their options, they have trouble leaving it behind.

So making your spending decisions quickly

might mean you spend more than you intended, but it isn't all bad.

In the end, whether you're a spendthrift or a tightwad,

or a maximizer or a satisficer, there are some things that

you can do if you want to check your impulsive spending.

If the pain of paying matters to you,

you can try ditching the credit cards and paying in cash.

Lots of studies show that using cash slows down spending

because it forces you to literally watch the money

as it's in your hand and then not anymore.

Or, if you see something you think you want,

consider waiting before you actually buy it.

Understanding that having your hands on something

sets off that feel-good reward excitement in your brain

might help you resist the urge.

Then you can see if you're still thinking about it later on.

It happens when a radioactive little bee bites the mommy

or maybe the daddy dumps a radioactive seed into mommy's belly

or suddenly a radioactive stork appears in the middle of the night with a present

but if none of this works, mommy can always get inside of a radioactive gamma ray machine

and explode...that's right...

nuclear energy was the great scientific advancement of the 50s

and that's why it was the biggest inspiration of a whole generation of heroes

The heroes of your generation, probably will emerge because

they've seen many kitten memes on Facebook

They've been using Nadir filters on snapchat

or they've been spending half of their time playing Pokemon Go

People always like to compare heroes to the Gods of Greek mythology

but I always thought there'd a lot more to do with drag queens

I have to look like a fucking snake to be in the stupid supervillain group!

I'm clearly only wearing my cousin's bandage dress

but it was either this or that long train wedding dress that you are wearing!

What?? This is a snake's tail! It's an accessory in my supervillain suit!

It used to be less about heroism and more about the show back in the days

Half of them would use wonderful, stupendous, or glorious as their own name

Not to mention that they wouldn't leave the house without wearing a nice leotard

Is it really necessary for us to wear these leotards? They are just really tight

Ther cape, colored gloves and high boots...

That's not exactly the best way to avoid being recognized on the streets

and hide your identity. Yeah, as time goes by, I discovered that

most of them were not hiding just their identities

That must be why they have secret identities actually, so they don't have to give their insurance

They're probably the most irresponsible guys, to be honest

that just becomes a little detail that no one cares about,

but now, I'm feeling really guilty about that

Karen who took care of our press office and got us some branding on Instagram

and we had the heroes too! The...no...what was the girl's name again

there was a little dude too...yeah, what was his name?

I cannot believe this! Is this a marketing meeting?

I thought our fight was to save mutants!

The Most Successful Last-Minute Actor Replacements Ever - Duration: 5:24.

Choosing the perfect actor for a movie role is already a delicate process, but it becomes

even more difficult when an actor leaves a production, which can happen for any number

of reasons.

Directors and casting professionals can be left scrambling to replace their departing

stars.

Here are some of the craziest last-minute replacements we've seen on the big screen

— some of which ended up being the replacement actor's most successful role.

Mike Myers in Shrek

It's hard to imagine anything but Mike Myers' voice coming from the lovable animated ogre,

but the story of Shrek's casting is actually quite tragic.

Originally, comedian and character actor Chris Farley had been cast in the role, and according

to his brother Kevin, Farley actually completed recording nearly all of his dialogue for the

original Shrek film.

"People see me and they go, 'AHHH!

Help!

A big, stupid, stinky, smelly, ugly ogre!"

Unfortunately, Farley had been struggling for some time with alcohol and substance abuse,

and in December 1997, he passed away in his Chicago apartment after an accidental drug

overdose.

DreamWorks rushed to find a replacement, and chose Myers.

Additionally, they recast the role of Fiona with Cameron Diaz, who replaced Farley's S.N.L.

castmate Janeane Garofalo.

Christian Bale in American Psycho

In an odd turn of events, Christian Bale ended up replacing himself for the role of Patrick

Bateman in the 2000 black comedy horror film American Psycho — well, sort of.

Director Mary Harron had chosen Bale for the role, but the British actor wasn't yet the

superstar he is today.

Executives at Lionsgate wanted a higher-profile actor, and reportedly made a $20 million offer

to Leonardo DiCaprio — without informing Harron.

Harron fought hard to keep Bale, but Lionsgate eventually removed her from the project, too,

replacing her with Oliver Stone.

Stone began revising the script, and the film fell into a period of development hell.

Eventually, DiCaprio left to film The Beach, and Stone walked out as well.

When Lionsgate finally came back to Harron, she agreed to return as director, with Bale

as Bateman.

Their perseverance definitely paid off, as the film became a polarizing box office success

and eventual cult classic — helping propel Bale to the top of Hollywood's A-list.

"Well, isn't this a coincidence?"

Hugh Jackman in X-Men

Although he ended up landing the role of Wolverine in X-Men, Hugh Jackman wasn't director Bryan

Singer's first choice.

Originally, Singer wanted Russell Crowe, who turned it down.

Crowe recommended his friend, Jackman, for the part, but Singer decided to go with the

more experienced actor Dougray Scott.

Unfortunately for Scott, production on Mission: Impossible 2 was delayed, leaving him unavailable

when filming for X-Men began.

Forced to make a last-minute change in the main cast, Singer called in Jackman for an

audition, gave him the role, and the rest is history.

Geena Davis in A League of Their Own

With her performance as Dottie Hinson in the 1992 sports dramedy A League of Their Own,

Geena Davis won the hearts of moviegoers everywhere.

"Hey, who's the goddamned manager here, I AM!"

"Then act like it, ya big lush!"

However, director Penny Marshall's original choice was actress Debra Winger, who was furious

when she learned that Marshall had cast pop superstar Madonna in the film.

Marshall later recalled in her memoir that before walking off the set, Winger told her,

"You're making an Elvis film!"

Subsequently, Davis nailed her audition in Marshall's backyard — and proved that she

could throw a ball.

While the rest of the cast had been training together for months prior to filming, Davis

had to work hard and fast to get into shape for the demanding role.

Michael Biehn in Aliens

It's probably hard to picture anyone but Michael Biehn as Dwayne Hicks in the 1986 movie Aliens,

but originally, it was supposed to be James Remar.

However, a couple of weeks after filming started, Remar abruptly left the production.

He later revealed during a Sidebar podcast interview that while he had originally cited

"urgent matters at home" to explain his departure, the truth is that he was struggling with drug

addiction at the time, and director James Cameron fired Remar after he was arrested

for possession.

With no time to prepare for the physically demanding role, Michael Biehn was brought

in as Remar's replacement.

Ed Harris in The Truman Show

The critically acclaimed satirical film The Truman Show wouldn't be the same without the

character Christof, the obsessive showrunner played masterfully by Ed Harris.

But director Peter Weir didn't choose Harris at first — originally, Dennis Hopper was

cast in the role.

After filming began, Weir and Hopper reportedly ran into creative differences on the set,

leading Hopper to leave the production entirely.

Hopper later revealed that he was fired after only two days of filming — a decision he

called "a major blow" at the time.

Called up at the last minute to replace Hopper, Harris threw himself into the role — earning

himself an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actor.

Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry

In addition to his performance as the Man With No Name, Clint Eastwood is also frequently

remembered for his portrayal of the hard-as-nails homicide cop Harry Callahan in Dirty Harry.

But the role almost went to another famous performer: Frank Sinatra.

Supposedly, the script written for Sinatra had Harry toting a 12-gauge shotgun as his

signature weapon.

But as production got underway, Sinatra had to back out — a broken hand he sustained

while filming a fight scene for The Manchurian Candidate left him unable to hold a gun.

After ensuring the original script would be used, Eastwood agreed to play Harry — cementing

his place in pop-culture history with a 44 Magnum and the frequently misquoted line,

"You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?'

Well, do you, punk?"

Easy DIY Ornament Tree How To Tutorial Decoration For The Christmas and New Year Season - Duration: 5:03.

I gotta craft I gotta craft I've gotta craft hey hey hey hey so today we're

going to use these bulbs from Target there is eight for a dollar there are a

little bit bigger ones and then I have some teeny tiny ones there's 16 of those

for a dollar you can get them in the dollar section at Target and then I had

this pack which is 25 bulbs for three dollars that part was in the very back

with all the Christmas trees and stuff got some garland in the dollar

section and we're going to fill this styrofoam cone with these bulbs what I

do is I push in and you can see my daughter they're wanting to help and

check out all the bulbs I push in make sure I have it where I want it

take it back out and put hot glue at the top just around the edge

and then I stick it back into the hole I had made for it

take up all those tops that you put the hands on you don't need those you just

need to go straight into the styrofoam

and each time I would press it in and then I would pull it back out put

some hot glue around the edge and then I stick it back in to the hole that I had

previously made and this basically just helps because it to put the hot glue

straight onto the styrofoam it has a tendency to melt the styrofoam a little

bit you'll see my daughter

pop in and out

throughout the video she was really liking all the shiny and glittery bulbs

so you're gonna go ahead and do that all the way around and I use the variety and

sizes just effect always give it a little bit of depth I ended up doing two

and I'll show you them both of me and I did like the second one a little bit

better and I mainly focused only the bigger balls down below rather than

having the variety of sizes all throughout I think you turned out a

little bit better but they both look really cool so you get the idea you push

the bulb in you pull it back out you put hot glue around the top and you push it

back in and use that all the way up so here we go

so when I got to the top is when I started to pull out the garland and what

I did is it have a little bit of a wire in it and so I put that into the very

top and I wrapped the garlic all around to be exposed styrofoam cone and then I hot glued it

so it would stay in place I went down the whole tree and I just weaved in in

between and around all the bulbs that were in there if there was a place where I have

a little bit of cone showing more so than a bulb more so like an empty spot then what

I would do is I'd push it a good amount of garland in there and I'd put a

little bit of hot glue in and make it so that it was more just the garland so

none of that cone shows through but it works really well just weaving around

and your ornaments are mainly tight enough that it just holds the garland in

place and you don't have to use a lot of hot glue for this part unless you want

to to finish it off I had gotten this box of 15 stars star ornaments for three

dollars and I thought oh I will just take the little part that hooks on off

and then I will put it on upside down not thinking that that meant the star

itself would be upside down but if you put it off just a little bit it more so

looks like it was tilted a little bit so it still ended up looking really cute

you so now let me show you the two that I

did and give you a few tips of what I would have done a little bit differently

and what I like alright so I ended up doing two and I gotta say I love them

both but I definitely love this one a little bit more what I did is I focused

the bigger bulbs on the bottom and as I went up I only used the teeny tiny bulbs

a little bit at the top but I did go a little bit above the cone and I put some

of them coming into the top of the cone and then I just put this into a couple

of the actual bulbs rather than the cone itself so that would be my tip if you

give it a try and I just did the same thing with this where I just weaved the

tinsel in between or the garland in between all the bolts those would be my

tips I love how they turned out I hope you guys like them I hope you guys give

him a try I think it would look absolutely amazing with red and green or

gold and silver instead of all the colors but I love it I hope you guys do

EastEnders' Branning family set for explosive Christmas special drama

EastEnders spoilers have revealed the Branning family will face their biggest drama yet as they take centre stage on Christmas Day in Albert Square.

The catastrophic hour-long episode sees Max (Jake Wood) face the consequences for his evil actions over the past year.

Recent weeks have seen the Walford villain at his lowest ebb and his daughters Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald) and Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) question whether they will be able to forgive him for his revenge plot against Walford.

The mastermind plans, which businessman James Willmott-Brown (William Boyde) helped him with, followed Max being wrongly imprisoned for the murder of Lucy Beale.

The Christmas Day episode of the BBC soap – written by Simon Ashdown – sees Max in a desperate last attempt to reconcile with his children.

It seems like he might have made progress with pregnant Abi when she joins him at Stacey Fowlers gaff for Christmas dinner, but there is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

Staceys phone - which is returned to its rightful owner on Christmas morning after being stolen by Chatham and Riley Taylor - contain voicemails from Jane Beale revealing that Max killed Steven Beale.

And while Max does everything he can to stop Stacey (Lacey Turner) from listening to the messages, its only a matter of time before people find out the truth.

"Hopefully we will see Max beyond this, but if we dont, it is what it is" Jake Wood Lauren and Abi will be bowing out of the EastEnders cast before the year is out, but viewers will have to wait and see exactly how they make their exits.

Could they be repeating sisters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchells exit by leaving in a bodybag? Elsewhere in the Square, viewers are promised some festive joy.

Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) and wife Linda (Kellie Bright) prepare to renew their wedding vows in their beloved Queen Vic pub.

Putting the fact they might lose their boozer to the back of their minds, they throw a huge party for the residents of Walford.

But in true EastEnders style, the Carters Christmas Day doesnt go smoothly either, as criminal mastermind Aidan Maguire (Patrick Bergin) arrives with a cunning plan up his sleeve.

Christmas in Walford continues in the Boxing Day episode, as the horrifying repercussions of the previous day will unfold.

Actor Jake – who has played Max for 12 years – teased a possible redemption: Well find out, but I hope he can be.

Obviously that decision is out of my hands, but if it is the end of the story, its been a great story. He continued to Press Association: Hopefully we will see him beyond this, but if we dont, it is what it is. EastEnders will be broadcast on Christmas Day at 900pm and Boxing Day at 700pm.

Marilyn Manson to #MeToo movement: 'Say it to police, not to the press' - Duration: 2:09.

Marilyn Manson has added his two cents to the ongoing discussion about sexual

harassment, which has really rocked Hollywood in recent months.

The rocker, who performs Jan. 16 at the Fox Theater in Oakland,

was asked during an interview on Britain's Channel 4 News about his thoughts on

the allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Specifically, whether he was surprised to hear that Manson's former love

interest Rose McGowan was one of people who had spoken out against Weinstein.

"I am not surprised by it," he answered.

"I didn't really know much about it when I was with her."

Then he addressed the possible long-term impact that these allegations might

have on the entertainment business.

"I just think that I don't want it to turn the whole world's attention from the

artistic element of Hollywood and movies and films to be ruined by this," he

said.

"That's not to disrespect the people who say the allegations"

Concerned over how the situation is being handled currently,

Manson went on to offer advice on a better way of making allegations about

sexual harassment.

"I just think that if you have something, you should say it to the police,

not to the press — and handle it that way first and foremost," he said.

"And that's what I would do."

"There's serious allegations, and they're always allegations of course,

but when someone starts complaining about something that happened that seems a

little bit not as serious as really sexual assault,

I think that's insulting to people that have been sexually assaulted.

"It pisses me off that when someone says,

'Someone gave me an inappropriate gift' or something.

That's not the same as being harmed.

Nikki Haley Announces $285 Million Reduction to U.N. Funding.

Nikki Haley, United States Ambassador to the United Nations (U.N.), announced Sunday night

that the federal government has reduced its contribution to the U.N.'s annual budget

by 285 million dollars.

The Christmas Eve statement reads in full:

Today, the United Nations agreed on a budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

‎Among a host of other successes, the United States negotiated a reduction of over $285

million off the 2016-2017 final budget.

In addition to these significant cost savings, we reduced the UN's bloated management and

support functions, bolstered support for key U.S. priorities throughout the world, and

instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the UN system.

"The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known.

We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain

unchecked.

This historic reduction in spending – in addition to many other moves toward a more

efficient and accountable UN – is a big step in the right direction.

While we are pleased with the results of this year's budget negotiations, you can be sure

we'll continue to look at ways to increase the UN's efficiency‎ while protecting

our interests," said Ambassador Haley.

Haley's statement comes after the U.N. voted to condemn the United States for President

Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The resolution, backed by nations with long records of extreme human rights abuses, passed

128-9 last Thursday.

Haley immediately responded by threatening to reduce America's U.N. funding.

"The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in

the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation," Haley

told the assembly in New York City.

"We will remember it when we are called upon to once again make the world's largest

contribution to the United Nations and we will remember it when so many countries come

calling on us, as they so often do, to pay even more and to use our influence for their

benefit."
