Youtube daily report w Mar 21 2018

The two games we are going to talk about today seem to be in the media almost daily. Both

are survival games and take inspiration from the Japanese dystopian thriller movie, Battle

Royale. Basically, as the saying goes, it's a fight to the death. There are other kinds

of game play, such as playing in teams, and a 50/50 mode that was released by Fortnite

Battle Royale on occasions. In that case, players are asked to work together, rather

than just exterminate everything they see. Both games have been received well by critics

and players alike, and have garnered millions of fans in quite a short space of time. But

which is better? That's what we'll find out today, in this episode of the Infographics

Show, Fortnite Battle Royale vs. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.

We'll start with Fortnite's Battle Royale mode. Released in 2017, it was developed by

Epic Games and People Can Fly. It's available on numerous platforms, and has been compared

to Minecraft, except for the element of having to survive and kill lots of zombie-like things.

Players are dropped into an unforgiving environment, a planet depleted of most of its population.

Players don't start with much in terms of weapons, but from there they go out and scavenge,

and attempt to be the last man standing.

In its concept, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds isn't much different. Also released in 2017,

and also available across various platforms, it's a race to survive. Created by PUBG

Corporation, it was actually released before Fortnite Battle Royale, so it can take some

kudos for that. Again, players are dropped into an unforgiving environment and must scavenge

for things that will help them survive. It's another last man standing scenario, with this

kind of game now being hailed as the genre of the day.

While the games are similar in concept, they are quite different in how they look. PUBG

has been called more realistic looking; more gritty and militaristic. Fortnite Battle Royale

is a lot more fantasy-esque and looks much more like an arcade game. It's just a matter

of what look you prefer. As for the maps, new ones keep being released. At time of writing,

it was reported that PUBG will get its third in-game map sometime in early summer. As for

Fortnite Battle Royale's Season 2, that is about to finish as we write this. Apparently,

the next theme will be space, but you will know by now. PUBG has bigger maps, but as

some players point out, that's not always a good thing. Having to traverse large tracts

of land brings attention to you, which some players don't like. PUBG has been called

a game in which you have to use tactics more and position yourself better, while Battle

Royale has been called absolute chaos. Again, it's a matter of taste as to which environment

you prefer.

Now, let's take a look at at some numbers: PUBG has sold more than 30 million copies

on Steam and a further four million copies for Xbox One. It's thought, in all, it's

made about $712 million.

Fortnite's Battle Royale mode had over 10 million users within two weeks of its release.

It's also said that this game just topped PUBG in terms of concurrent players. That

was 3.4 million for Battle Royale and 3.2 million for PUBG. This might have something

to do with cost. PUBG costs $29.99 for Xbox One and PC. Battle Royale's season three

pass can be paid for with game credits you already earned, or you can just pay 10 bucks.

Another thing to mention is that one of PUBG's biggest markets is China, and Battle Royale

isn't even available in China yet. In terms of growth, it looks like Battle Royale is

winning, although this has led to problems with its servers. That said, people have complained

about servers for both games.

But what do the critics think?

Both games have gained lots of accolades, with PUBG winning many Game of the Year titles.

Battle Royale hasn't garnered anything close to the same attention, but it came out later

and time will tell. PUBG got a score of 85 on Metacritic, which aggregates many scores.

It was also called by some "The best multi-player game ever." Fortnite scored 74, but there

is no separate score for the Battle Royale mode. Yes, people said it is fun, but it didn't

receive the same kind of superlatives as PUBG did. But things might be changing. NFL Star

J J Watt posted a poll on Twitter in 2018 asking which game was the best and 45,341

people responded. The poll ended with 74 percent of people voting for Fortnite and 26 percent

voting for PUBG. Again, this was not just addressed to the Battle Royale mode for Fortnite.

The various Reddit threads about the topic didn't show such a difference, with some

people saying they preferred PUBG and others preferring Battle Royale.

So, which game do you think is the best and why? Let us know in the comments. Also, be

Depressed & Still Grateful #1 - Duration: 3:15.

Hi everyone!

I know some of you will be surprised that I'm sharing a video on a Wednesday

but the thing is... I realized I wanted to create a weekly video,

something simple and short to publish on Wednesdays

that I happily named [Depressed & Still Grateful]!

Maybe some of you follow the Channel's Instagram - for those who are interested, read below in the description :) -

Some days ago I published an image/small text on Instagram

about... how being grateful for various things in my life

can help me tremendously on my most difficult days.

This week, for example, and even the week before have been really, really hard

And this "improvised technique" of mine that uses gratitude as a... tool... it really helps!

Let me just tell you that no mental health professional told me to do this, I kinda just started doing it randomly...

So please note this is working for me and I'm sharing with you hoping it can work for you too

but it's not an official technique - at least that I know about :)

So that's it! Every Wednesday I'll sharing how I'm depressed & still grateful.

Today I want to tell you that I'm grateful to all of you out there who are on the other side of the screen!

If not for you, I'd never be doing this and I am REALLY happy doing it!

Running this Channel has been helping me a lot and giving me great pleasure...

and realizing there's some interest on the matter also shows that what I'm doing can be useful to society

I'd like to send a big hug for each and one of you because you guys help me, even if you don't know it

and most importantly I'm sending a huge, huge hug to those out there suffering from depression.

You are the reason I am doing all this and I want you to know that even if you think there's no way out

even if you're having such a hard time that you can only think about giving up on everything

Please remember and believe me when I say that THERE IS a way out

and you don't to go through the rest of your lives suffering like that.

So today I'm sending you this big, comfy hug and a lot of strength!

And... I hope you remember this channel is for you and that you can make the most of it

So guys, keep on going, YOU'VE GOT THIS! And...

Feel free to share how you feel, comment below, say what's going on inside, ask whatever you want...

For me this channel is YOU. So have a lovely day, here the sun is shinning...

And I'll be going 'cause I want to make our Sunday's video, OK? Kisses :)

When to use CONTRACTIONS | don't, I'm, gonna, woulda, etc. - Duration: 10:02.

Say hello. Say hello.

Hello YouTube. Hello everybody.

Hi guys, welcome back to English with Max.

In this video I'm going to talk about when you should use contractions. I wanted to

do this video because I realised that lots of teachers explain how to form

contractions and what contractions mean, but they don't always explain exactly

when to use them. So that's what I'm going to try to do in this video.

As usual remember that you can follow me on social media. I'm still putting daily

pronunciation videos on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And don't forget

to subscribe. Now if you're not sure what a contraction is, in other words if you

haven't watched my previous videos, a contraction is simply a shortening of a

group of words. For example, "I am" becomes "I'm". "Do not" becomes "don't".

There are also contractions that don't have apostrophes. For example, "could have"

can be contracted to "coulda". "Going to" can be contracted to "gonna". Contractions are

also the sharp pains that women get before they give birth, but that's not

what we're talking about here. Firstly, let's look at contractions like these

ones: contractions that have apostrophes. I like to call these "standard contractions"

because they're very very common. All native speakers use these,

even the Queen. Firstly, these contractions can be used in spoken

language, even if it's a formal situation like a job interview. You can use these

in both informal and formal spoken language. The only times we don't use

them is when we're speaking very slowly or we're trying to be very clear or

emphatic. If you look at the subtitles in my videos, you will see that sometimes I

use them, and sometimes I don't. I definitely use them more in my everyday

life than when I'm teaching English, because when I'm teaching an English

lesson I try to be very clear. So in spoken language you can basically use

them whenever you want, and you will definitely sound more natural if you use

them. However that is not the case for written language. In written language you

should only use them in casual and informal writing. For example, in a text

message, or an email to a friend, or in a comment on a YouTube video. You shouldn't

use them in job applications, at least not for "serious" jobs, or in academic

writing. Or in a serious report at work. It just looks more serious if you don't

use contractions, and even in informal writing you don't have to use them.

If you're in doubt, just write the full form.

Everybody will still understand you, there's nothing wrong with it. Before I

continue I just want to point out that the contraction "ain't" is an exception.

Yes, it's a contraction with an apostrophe, but it's very informal - not

everybody uses it, and it's rarely used in written language. It can mean: am not,

are not, is not, has not, or have not. I actually recommend that you don't use it,

because it's quite specific to certain dialects, and if you use it incorrectly,

you'll just sound strange. Now let's look at informal contractions.

These are the ones that I spoke about in my last video.

These are the ones that don't have apostrophes.

For example: shoulda, coulda, wanna, gonna. These are only used in informal spoken language.

So don't use them in a job interview (the classic example)

or if you're going to give a speech. I personally wouldn't use them

in an English oral exam either. To be honest there are lots of native

speakers who don't use these at all, particularly in the UK. I think it's more

common to use them in North America - so Canada and the US - and other places like

Australia and New Zealand. The main reason why you should be aware of these

is because it will help your listening comprehension. You don't have to use them.

And please, please don't use them because you are trying to sound native. It won't

necessarily work. The reason why native speakers use these contractions is just

because sometimes we get lazy and these are quicker to say. My advice is to only

use them if it feels natural. For example, when I was living in France, I learnt

that when French people speak, instead of saying "tu as", which means "you have", they

often say "t'as". And over time I started using it as well sometimes, but it

happened almost unconsciously. I just was hearing it all the time so it started to

feel natural. So yes, native speakers use them quite frequently when they speak,

but they don't write them that often. At least probably a lot less than

you think they do. Most people don't write them at all, because it's mainly

something that teenagers and people in their 20s do. You might see them in books

where there's dialogue and you might see them in subtitles, because subtitles are

a transcript of people speaking. When I think about what I do and what most of

my friends do - I'm 31 and I have friends who are older and younger than me -

I'd say we only use them when we're typing really quickly on our phones, like

on WhatsApp or Messenger. I wouldn't use them in an email or in

YouTube comments, for example. Except if I was doing it for

comic effect, which means that I was doing it to be a bit funny.

I wouldn't even write them in an SMS. If I wanted to ask a friend if they wanted

to meet for coffee, I would simply write: Do you want to meet for coffee later?

I wouldn't write: Do you wanna meet for coffee later?

To be honest, I probably see non-native English-speakers writing these more often

than native speakers. It's a bit like the expression "raining cats and dogs".

I know lots of people learn it in English classes, but it's not actually something

that we say very often. Don't feel bad if you've done this. I made the same mistake

in French when I was living in France in the beginning, so I understand.

In summary, don't try to use them. Don't use them to try to sound native because

if you use them in the wrong context, you'll just sound worse. And when in

doubt, it's always better to be more formal than too informal.

And please don't say to me: "But I've seen it on the internet."

We see lots of things on the internet, and I'm sure even in your own language,

you see people writing badly. Some people on the internet don't even use punctuation.

They'll write this much, like ten lines, and there'll be no

punctuation and no capital letters. The lack of capital letters I can more or

less tolerate, but zero punctuation is just horrible.

So yeah... "I've seen it on the internet" is not an argument.

Okay guys, I hope that's all a bit clearer now.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to write them in the comments section.

Please give me a thumbs up, if you liked the video, share it with your friends,

and have a nice day. See you next time!

Yes, yes... Oh you want to go. Okay, okay okay...

What You Don't Really Know About Backpack Kid - Duration: 7:37.

Russell Horning first hit the national spotlight with his appearance in Katy Perry's "Swish

Swish" performance on SNL.

After that, the kid known as "Backpack Kid" and his signature move, flossing, became an

internet sensation.

Horning has since appeared at professional sports games, charity events, and more.

Always in a backpack, of course.

But is there more to Horning than swinging arms and a stone-faced glare?

Here's everything you don't know about Backpack Kid.

End zone floss

Take a knee, Tebowing, because the Backpack Kid has intercepted the end zone spotlight

for the time being.

As "flossing" reached dizzying heights in the fall of 2017, a few NFL players adopted

Russell Horning's signature move to celebrate touchdowns.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Mack Hollins busted out the shimmy after a 64-yard touchdown

in a game against the Washington Redskins.

Hollins later revealed that he was actually known as "Backpack Mack" in college, because

he always used to wear one.

He didn't even make the connection to Horning's famous nickname until after he repeated the

dance.

But hang on, because Horning has placed his NFL allegiance elsewhere.

In a video for ESPN, Horning chats with New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram, who

also adopted "flossing" in the end zone after learning the dance from a kid in the Bahamas.

Horning not only enjoyed the tribute, he also has a lot of faith in the power of his signature

dance.

"I mean if they do it for the rest of the season, they're going to the Super Bowl and

they're going to win.

Guaranteed one hundred percent."

Well, the Saints didn't make the Super Bowl, but then again, Flossing doesn't help you

cover wide receivers either….

He's 2 Litt

Horning hasn't just been resting on his laurels since he flossed his way to internet stardom.

On top of constantly doing press for outlets like the NBA and Inside Edition, Horning has

already released two original songs.

The first, naturally, was "Flossin," a remix by DJ Suede The Remix God.

"I'll be flossins,"

"I'll be flossins,"

Horning's second track was "2 Litt," a decidedly more polished effort by producer Red Drum,

who's worked with up-and-coming hip-hop stars such as Kodak Black and Smokepurpp.

The video was directed by Dallas Corsmeier, an animator who definitely gave it a unique

feel.

"I'm so lit You're so not.

Ballin' so hard, look at my shot."

If Horning keeps climbing the hip-hop collab ladder like this, it won't be long before

he's all the way at the top.

Oh, wait — he's already there.

"Me and my team, we're at the top."

Backpack squad

In a 2018 profile for Vice, Horning introduced the world to his crew.

Often featured dancing alongside Horning in his videos, Jaden , Frederick, Jordan, and

Nyreese round out the Backpack Kid's loyal squad.

"They have been my friends forever since before… waway before I started doing this."

Crew member Nyreese laid out what could essentially be the group's motto, saying:

"I see the squad as just a bunch of friends that love to have fun and just turn it up

everywhere we go, wherever we can go, and just breaking the rules."

And don't worry, Horning's mom approves.

She told Vice:

"They are so much fun, and they just enjoy each other, and they enjoy dancing, and they

enjoy the city, and it's just really fun to be a part of this."

But for Horning, it's actually more than just fun — he says his crew keeps him grounded:

"I value true friendship, because that is what keeps me sane and not becoming all stingy

and being like famous people are these days.

I think that true friends keep that from happening.

I'm never leaving them.

If they don't leave me, I'm not leaving them."

Philanthropic floss

Horning doesn't just "floss" for viral fame and the chance to rub elbows with celebrities.

He also sometimes uses his powers for good, like when he showed up at the 10th Annual

Zumba Instructors Convention to throw down his sick moves alongside some other kid dancers

in support of CARE Elementary, a Miami charter school.

In an Instagram post about the event, Horning said he was inspired by the experience, so

there's no reason to think we won't see more of Backpack Kid's philanthropic efforts in

the future.

Flossin' for dental hygiene awareness, maybe?

Rap dreams

As fans may have guessed after the release of "Flossin" and "2 LITT," Horning has big

plans for a career in the music industry.

As he described in an interview with Nicki Swift, he told us the internet sensation hopes

to become a bonafide rapper one day — possibly, one day soon.

Horning revealed that he and "2 LITT" collaborator Swag Hollywood are "making a lot of music

that will be released in the future."

Even though he has a passion for music, don't expect to see Backpack Kid head off to college

in pursuit of a degree in the field.

Though he understands the importance of an education, college might not be for him — and

he's not convinced a degree would help him become a successful rapper or musician.

Instead, he'd rather get hands-on experience working with people in the industry.

Backpack sponsorship

In the wake of capturing the hearts and minds of America with his SNL performance, Horning

almost immediately started fielding business opportunities.

And by "almost immediately," we mean the next day.

His mom and manager, Anita Redd, told the Gwinnett Daily Post:

"I've just been managing my phone, responding to emails and setting up times for interviews

and now I'm collaborating with people on designing a backpack based on him, designing socks based

on him, T-shirts, hoodies (and) caps all since Sunday."

Has that backpack money started rolling in yet?

According to Horning, he's got his eye on a particular brand.

He told Complex:

"Yeah, I am trying to stay loyal to one brand, it's called Sprayground.

I'm trying to get more from their business.

[...] I've known Sprayground for a very long time and I'm trying to only wear their book

bags."

It seems like Sprayground is definitely down to cash in on the Backpack Kid phenomenon

as well.

In this clip posted to YouTube by Sprayground, Katy Perry chats with a DJ who just so happens

to have a Sprayground backpack handy for a segment.

Called "Spray it Out Loud," the pop star had to answer random questions tucked into different

compartments of the backpack.

"There's questions in this backpack.

Which zipper do you want?"

If that's not some synergistic cross promotion right there, we don't know what is.

Unfollowed

While Katy Perry may have helped launch Backpack Kid into online superstardom, the pop singer

doesn't even follow him on Instagram.

That's surprising, considering both her collaboration with Horning and her public endorsement of

his Instagram page.

"That's his Instagram you should check it out he is… honestly he is phenomenal I love

him."

But don't feel bad for the young man — he's totally okay with the situation.

In our interview, Hourning told us:

"She's done so much for me that I don't really need a follow from her.

I mean, if she does, yeah, that'd be very much appreciated, but I appreciate everything

that she's already done for me."

Still, we can't help but wonder why Perry doesn't follow Horning.

Is she over flossing?

Grooving at games

Given his debut on the court in Perry's basketball-themed music video for "Swish Swish," it makes sense

that Horning would gravitate toward performances at NBA games.

Since gaining near-overnight fame, he's appeared on the dance cam at a Charlotte Hornets game

and showed off his signature move during a dance number for the Sacramento Kings.

But Horning may soon become a staple at sporting events.

After describing a future performance with comedic basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters,

he told us that he hopes to continue entertaining crowds at basketball games because he believes

his brand goes "well with the family-friendliness of the NBA."

Forever flossing

Though you might expect Horning to gradually expand his repertoire of signature dance moves,.

When asked if he was working on any other choreography, Horning expressed doubt that

he'll ever create another hit as massive as flossing.

He explained:

"I tried making other moves in the past, but making more moves just isn't what it's supposed

to be.

Flossing is the one that really got big so I'm just gonna stick with it."

Cookin' up beats

If you take a look at Horning's YouTube channel, you'll find everything you'd typically expect

to find within a teenager's social media presence, like playing video games, eating fast food,

and just general silliness.

But you can also find him making beats, like in this video where Horning puts together

some digital loops in less than 10 minutes and freestyles a few lyrics:

"This beat is fly.

I watched family guy.

I'm not telling no lies"

Okay, Horning may not be headed to the Grammys with that one, but kudos to him for trying.

So, keep it up kid, you're doing something right.

Moms can be so embarrassing | 22 Minutes - Duration: 1:41.

When I was a young athlete, my mother came to all my games so I know how moms

can be. But there comes a time when mom needs to be in a place of her own.

At first it was just like the little things that annoyed me, like dropping me off too

close to school, like encouraging my interests. But I knew something had to

change the day I had friends over and she was singing the Thong Song in the

kitchen. I mean isn't that music like ... from the war? And that's when I was

like, yeah I have to find a place for her. Hey hon, let's do a fun selfie! Uggggh, Mom!

A Place for, ugh, Mo-om!!! is a parental living referral service for teens who literally can't

even with their moms anymore. Whether your embarrassing mom is in her late

30s or even later 30s, it's the only facility that offers customized mom

credits of a movie. Having a wine. Worrying circle, and of course, Matching

tupperware containers with their lids. Of course she loves it yeah, she loves

everything! Oh God I can't stand it. You know your family, we know they're

Controlled Experiments: Crash Course Statistics #9 - Duration: 12:27.

Hi, I'm Adriene Hill and Welcome back to Crash Course Statistics.

Famous tech guy and likely future space dweller Elon Musk once told interviewers that there's

a high probability that we're all living in a simulation.

Now that may sound outlandish, and it's an interesting statement about probability, but today we're

going to focus on the simulation part.

INTRO

Elon Musk as well as some philosophers, futurists, and technologists argue that it's entirely

possible, probable in fact, that in a few thousand years we will be able to create simulations

like World of Warcraft, or Minecraft that are so real, they'll be indistinguishable

from real life.

Living in a world like that, there's no way for you to tell if you're living in

the "true" world, or a simulation.

Or maybe a simulation inside a simulation.

If we were living in Musk's vision of a future world, any time we wanted to test something--like

whether that bus would have splashed us if you didn't stop to answer a text, or whether

the new drug we invented can cure lung cancer--all we would need to do is run two identical simulations.

In one simulation, we'd give people with lung cancer the new drug and watch to see

what happens, taking notes on things like lung capacity and remission rates.

While that's happening, we'd do `exactly the same in another simulation except we'd

give the patients a placebo drug--something that looks and feels like a real drug but

isn't--and we'd record the results.

Once both simulations are done, we'd be able to look at our data and have a good idea

of whether it works.

Now we can't yet run a parallel universe just to satisfy our curiosity of whether the amount

of time we spend sleeping next to our cell phone increases our chance of brain cancer…

But we are doing the next best thing!

Researchers have started using simulations to study cancer treatments.

To predict the impacts of climate change.

Researchers are using VR to simulate disaster situations.

And to help train people how to respond in earthquakes or floods.

Thanks Thought Bubble.

Still we need other ways to answer the burning questions that keep us up at night.

And until scientists can pull through with the necessary technology, we're limited

to two main methods of collecting data to answer our questions.

One way to get around our inability to create and destroy universes at will, is by using experiments.

Experiments try to mimic parallel universes by taking the one universe we do have, and

splitting it randomly into groups.

Imagine a High School where test scores are low... and we want to see whether buying cappuccino

machines for students' families... will improve test scores.

We don't have two parallel versions of the high school to test our idea, but we can randomly

split it into two groups: one group's families will get free cappuccino machines, and the

other's won't.

And then we let life go on, just like in the simulations, and we record the test scores

of both groups.

Because we randomly assigned each person's group, every single family had an equal chance

of being in the cappuccino and no-cappuccino groups.

Randomness allows us to claim that before the cappuccino makers were given out, there

were no systematic differences between the groups.

Usually researchers will use a random number generator to assign subjects into random groups.

Random assignment reduces the chance that the bias of the people running the experiment

will affect the groups.

For example, it prevents them from doing things like putting subjects who they think will

respond to caffeine in the cappuccino group, and those who won't in the no-cappuccino group.

It also makes it impossible for people to choose their own groups.

That way, the coffee lovers don't all sign up for the free cappuccino machine, while

tea enthusiasts don't.

These two problems are called Allocation Bias, and Selection Bias, respectively.

Because of randomness, it's unlikely--though not impossible--that all of the wealthy people

ended up in one group, and the not-so-wealthy in the other.

Or the vegans in one group, and the omnivores in the other.

Randomness is usually our best method for ensuring that our groups are similar before

we give them any treatment.

But the slight possibility that our groups might be really uneven is why it's important

to replicate experiments.

In some situations, Researchers can also force the number of wealthy people or vegans to

be the same in each group using something called a Randomized Block Design, but randomness

usually does a pretty good job.

In our example, a Treatment was either getting a cappuccino machine, or not getting a cappuccino

machine.

In general, treatments are conditions that we want to test, like new medicines, or educational

interventions like reading extra books to your kids.

Treatments can also have levels.

For example when we look at whether exercise is related to weight loss, we might have 3

groups: one group does no exercise, one group does 5 hours of exercise a week, and the third

group does 10 hours of exercise a week.

These levels can help us see whether there's a linear relationship between our treatment

and outcome, or whether 5 hours of exercise is just as good as 10.

One of the treatments in an experiment is usually nothing.

These treatments are called controls and they play a huge role in experiments.

It's our way of pretending we have a universe where there's no treatment.

Let's say you got a little too eager to get your freshly baked chocolate chip cookies out of

the oven, and you burned your finger.

You put some Neosporin on it, and after a few days your finger heals.

You're SO happy that you practically turn into Neosporin's next spokesperson.

But it's possible that the burn would have healed just fine on it's own.

A control treatment--aka no treatment--would let us compare what happens between two similar

burns: one treated with an antibiotic cream...and one left to heal by itself.

These types of control groups are great at helping us to divide up the changes we observe

into changes due to treatments, and changes that are just due to time or circumstance.

If your finger heals faster with ointment than without it, we can more confidently claim

that there's a relationship between Neosporin use and burn healing ...than if we didn't

have a control.

Sometimes, we want to control for more than just time and circumstance with our control treatments.

With medical trials, you, as the person taking the medicine, would want new medicines to

work better than nothing, but you also want to make sure that it's not just the act

of doing something that's making you feel better.

It's been shown that just the act of taking a fake medication or having a fake surgery--

seriously --can make people feel better.

These are called placebo effects.

Placebos allow us to control these effects by "pretending" to treat everyone.

Subjects in medical studies are often given sugar pills or saline drips to make it seem

like both groups are being treated.

Non-medical studies also use placebos.

Studies that claim First Person Shooter video games like Call of Duty improve cognition

should probably have a control group that plays a non-First Person Shooters, like Mario Kart.

Then the researchers could ensure that it's not just the act of participating in research

or learning a new video game console that's causing the observed changes.

Essentially, good placebos and controls should look and feel as close as possible to the

actual treatment so that the only difference is whatever we're interested in--like First

Person Shooter Video Games.

Sometimes there are undetected factors causing changes in an experiment that you just don't

know about.

Well chosen placebos and controls allow us to better account for them.

Sometimes it's just not possible to shield subjects from knowing the difference between

conditions.

Take diets, for example.

When people agree to be put into a clinical study which compares a group of subjects who

do not change their diet, to a group that goes low-carb, it's hard to make both groups

think they're doing the same treatment.

People can see what they're eating.

When subjects don't know which treatment they're receiving--usually because they're

getting a good placebo--they are considered "blind" to the treatment.

An Experiment where the subjects don't know what treatment they're getting but the researchers

do is called a Single Blind Study, which leads to better experiments because all groups experience

the act of being treated.

But even in a Single Blind study, it's possible that researchers might be biased when observing

the subjects.

The researchers still know which treatment the subject is getting.

A researcher who spent years creating, funding, and planning a study, probably thinks their

treatment works.

Why dedicate your life to developing a drug to cure cancer if you don't think it works?

The problem is, that belief in the value of the treatment can cause researchers to subconsciously

project those beliefs onto their subjects.

In the 1990's a group of Researchers looked at almost two dozen studies about whether

sugar causes hyperactivity in children, and they concluded that in general, it doesn't.

Parents who thought their children were given sugar reported them as being hyperactive,

but it turned out, they were probably just being kids.

When parents are blinded to whether their child received sugar, both groups of parents

reported roughly equal levels of hyperactivity.

Even when we think our subconscious biases don't get in the way, they still sometimes do.

We try to solve this problem by having Double Blind studies in which both the subjects and

the researchers have no idea which treatment the subject is getting.

Just like with blinding patients, sometimes it's impossible for the researcher to not

be able to tell the difference, but double blind studies are the gold standard in many

fields whenever they are physically ….and financially…. doable.

And while we still can't bend space and time to make parallel universes, there are

a few other ways to pretend we do have them.

One is Matched-Pairs experiments.

Just like the name implies, these experiments use pairs of subjects that are very similar,

and give one of them Treatment A, and the other Treatment B.

Identical Twins, for example, are about as close as we can get to a parallel universe.

Since twins are genetically similar and often grow up in the same situation, we're able

to get our treatment groups to be almost exactly the same ...or at least way closer than random

assignment alone.

The more similar the groups are before treatment, the better researchers can spot treatment effects.

We can also have a matched-pairs experiment with non-twins.

In this case, each pair is matched on one or more features that the researchers decide

are important... like age, race, gender, or weight.

Then these pairs are treated like twins.

One is assigned Treatment A, and the other, Treatment B.

For simplicity here we're assuming there are two groups, but there could be more!

The best subject researchers can pair you with is yourself!

Many experiments will give the same subject multiple treatments, one at a time, to see

how they react to each.

This ensures that each treatment "group" is the same, since it's all the same people.

This type of matched-pairs design is often called a repeated measures design, and while

it comes with its own set of limitations, it can be better than regular random assignment.

And sometimes the stars align and we get to see the results of the interesting experiments

that we don't have the power to implement ourselves.

Recently, the city of Philadelphia passed a sugar tax that would charge companies

an extra 1.5 cents per ounce of sugary beverage sold.

Researchers can't just assign cities to have extra taxes.

When cities do vote these things into law, some very interesting things can happen, and

they did in the Philadelphia International Airport.

Because it straddles the city's border, some of these otherwise identical stores had

to comply with the law while others didn't.

Through this data, researchers were able to find that contrary to previous assurances,

chain stores in taxed terminals raised their prices about .83 cents per ounce more than

their non-taxed terminal counterparts.

Which means the tax did what it was supposed to: increase the cost of sugary drinks

and encourage people to buy less.

We all consume products that are the result of experimentation... from Amazon's web

design to the prescription drugs we take... which is why it's useful to know why researchers feel

they can make the decisions and claims that they do.

Knowing the theory behind experimentation also allows us to be more informed consumers.

So the next time you find yourself staring down the homeopathic medicine section...wondering

if that effervecent tab (developed by an instructor of students) will really stop your cold

Ask how they tested it. Ask who tested it.

DFTBA-Q. You know I'm not sure why this isn't taking off.

Where's my t-shirt? Anybody?

Why We Can't Choose God - Duration: 1:00.

Insofar as that we have the ability by nature to make choices, we have natural ability.

We don't have the natural ability to fly through the air unaided by machines because we have

not by nature been equipped with wings and feathers and all of that sort of thing.

But as human beings with a will, we have the natural ability to make choices.

What we lack, according to Edwards, is the moral ability to choose the things of God.

Why?

Because, in the fall, we have lost our disposition, our desire, and our inclination for God.

The reason why man can't choose God unless God first chooses him is simply because man

won't choose God. We cannot choose what we don't want.

10 Creepy Animals That Science Loves - Duration: 7:23.

10 Creepy Animals That Science Loves.

Number 10.

Since its discovery in 1836, only thirty-five specimens of almiqui have been caught.

The family that it belongs to, the solenodons, have been around for seventy-six million years.

That rarity, and the fact that it is considered an endangered species, means that scientists

love this strange-looking little guy.

The rest of us, however, are simply terrified of it.

Besides the fact that it looks like a genetic experiment gone wrong, its saliva is also

toxic.

It uses that toxic spit to catch prey.

Number 9.

This creepy purple blob is definitely not something that you would want to touch you.

Its main claim to fame isn't a bad one, however: it used to hop around with dinosaurs.

As it turns out, the purple frog is a scientific anomaly that caused one scientist to call

it a "once in a century" discovery.

The purple frog was found only a decade ago, in the mountains of India.

While the discovery of new species is more common that most people think, this frog is

undoubtedly a rarity, as it is not related to any known species.

It is truly one of a kind.

Number 8.

As disturbing as it looks, this subterranean East African native is a fascinating animal

that science is studying closely.

The naked mole rat ages remarkably slowly.

Compared to the average life span of other rodents, the naked mole rat lives a long time;

about thirty years.

Also, its body shows little wear and tear due to aging when compared to humans.

It seems to maintain bone health, reproduction rate and cognitive health throughout its entire

life.

Naturally, this means that scientists use them in the study of aging.

The naked mole rat is also seemingly immune to cancer.

Maybe we could swap their secrets for a makeover or two.

Number 7.

Most fish are ugly, but some fish are uglier than others.

Case in point: the Plainfin Midshipman.

Scientists love these fish for a very strange reason.

The Plainfin sing in order to attract females during mating season.

They somehow manage to create this droning love song without vocal chords.

In fact, the sound they make is so loud that human residents who lived near these fish's

love nest complained that the drone would drown out human conversations and keep them

up at night.

Until it was discovered that this supposedly voiceless fish could sing, rumors swirled

that the drone sound was made by a submarine or a secret government experiment.

Now scientists are studying the Plainfin Midshipman to see how they make their eerie calls.

Number 6.

There are a few different species of lamprey, but the most well-known (and most terrifying)

is a species that would best be described for laymen as a giant leech.

The combination of the words "giant" and "leech" sounds like the title of a B-horror movie,

but these things are very real.

The lamprey latch onto anything they can get a hold of, and proceed to suck whatever blood

they can find.

In 2006, a 360 million-year-old fossil of a lamprey was discovered.

This means that the lamprey is a living fossil, and is used to study everything from evolution

to primitive behaviors in biology.

Regardless of its importance to science, it is hard to swim comfortably knowing that these

bloodsuckers are mooching around nearby.

Number 5.

The recently-discovered and aptly-named forcepfly has been the talk of the scientific community,

this bug's genitals are shaped like forceps, which look like they could take a chunk out

of your flesh.

Scientists are in an uproar over the discovery of a new species of these creepy bugs.

Why?

This is only the third species discovered that belongs to this particular family of

insects.

For those of us who are not big fans of insects, three is three too many.

Number 4.

Hagfish are gross, period.

They are covered in slime, and knot themselves up in a horrifying way to confuse predators.

Even sharks have a hard time coping with the grossness of the hagfish.

No one in his or her right mind would want to get near one.

Except scientists.

Scientists love hagfish because they know that we all have them to thank for our existence.

If its ancestors did not survive the mass extinction event of the Cambrian Period, we

would not be here.

These ancestors were among the first animals that could be classified as chordate (or having

a backbone) meaning that without them, backbones would likely not have evolved.

Number 3.

Scientists would love to study a living specimen of the rare Goblin Shark.

One creature was caught in Japan in 2007, and scientists were ridiculously excited.

Unfortunately, itdied a few days later.

The shark stays near the bottom of the ocean and has a similar body structure to that of

ancient sharks.

Very little is known about this prehistoric left-over, and that is why scientists love

it.

Number 2.

The frilled shark is another one of those living fossils we talked about earlier.

It has remained relatively similar for over a million years.

It is also a rarity to see.

So rare, in fact, that any photograph of it is big news in the science world.

As well as looking decidedly creepy, this shark has three hundred trident-like teeth

in twenty-five rows, and can be as long as five feet.

Number 1.

Santino is a chimpanzee at Sweden's Furuvik Zoo.

Santino is a normal chimp, except that he's a bit of a jerk.

In 2010, Santino began throwing rocks at zoo patrons, which, to be fair, isn't too far

out of the ordinary.

What is strange, however, is that Santino started getting better at it.

He began hiding rocks around his enclosure, under hay and behind boulders that were within

striking distance of patrons.

He would then wait for the zoo to get busy and begin hurling rocks at people.

Scientists love to study Santino's behavior because he exhibits foresight, an understanding

of cause and effect, and the ability to plan; traits that are often thought of as exclusively

human.

Rush Limbaugh Revealed The Secret Trap Mueller Is Laying For President Trump - Duration: 13:32.

Rush Limbaugh Revealed The Secret Trap Mueller Is Laying For President Trump

Robert Mueller's goal is to take down President Trump.

But he isn't going about it in the way everyone thinks.

Rush Limbaugh exposed the secret trap the special counsel is laying for Trump.

Mueller was appointed to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election.

That led him to pursue the collusion angle.

It turned out to be a bust.

Pundits then speculated that Mueller's real goal was to build a case that Trump obstructed

justice when he fired FBI Director James Comey.

But Rush Limbaugh sees something else.

The king of conservative talk radio speculates that Mueller is actually trying to financially

ruin Trump.

Limbaugh reacted to reports that Mueller was subpoenaing records from the Trump organization

and believes this is an attempt to "nullify" the $900 million dollar loss Trump took on

his 1995 tax return – which was illegally leaked to the press during the campaign – and

force him to pay it back.

Breitbart reports:

"Limbaugh accused Mueller of seeking to "nullify" Trump's 1995 IRS claim of

approximately $900 million in operational losses in order to pursue a reclamation of

the money with added penalties and accrued interest:

And these requests, the subpoena for documents from the Trump Organization, I ask you again,

what has that to do with the campaign and with collusion and with the Russians?

They've already been looking into Trump business in Russia with the Miss, what is

it, USA, whatever his pageant is.

Do you all remember during the early days of the campaign there was news that Trump,

in a tax return something like 20 years ago, took a $900 million deduction that was granted

and survived an audit by the IRS?

Now, I forget the details.

It had to do with losses that he had incurred in that year in building things.

It was around 900 or $920 million deduction.

I'll never forget when it was reported because most people will never come close to ever

having that in a lifetime, and to have a guy personally write that much off?

Anyway, I think Mueller wants that $920 million back.

I think Mueller wants to prove that that was a faulty deduction.

I think that they want to go back, they want to get Trump's tax returns because they

want to nullify that $900 million deduction, and then they want to collect 20 years of

interest and penalties and wipe Trump out."

Limbaugh has long suggested that it isn't enough for Mueller and the swamp to take down

Trump.

Their goal is to send a message to any political outsider who wishes to challenge the status

quo—and that message is not only will they face investigations if they win, but they

will also be ruined financially.

Do you think this is Mueller's plan?

3 Things People Say to Digital Artists (And Why they're Wrong!) - Duration: 5:29.

hey folks its Oliver again welcome back to my channel today I'm going to be

talking about the stuff people say about digital artists for a beginner these

things can be really hard to hear and I wanted to debunk some of them right off

the bat so none of you feel discouraged To follow this topic I'm doing a

digital drawing this time yeah it's actually easier to record an edited

digital stuff I don't know why I don't do it more often

it's easier to get a nice finish on it so I'm primarily a digital artist that's

how I do most of my Commission's and what I spend most of my time and money

doing I spent years and years seeing as familiar with the technology as I have

and believe me I have heard it all the first and most

prevalent thing people say about digital artists is that digital art is just too

easy or digital art is cheating and golly gee if I had a dime for every time

the person saying that also followed it up with oh but I don't know how to do it

I can't figure it out like yeah it's almost like it's a skill

set you have to hone and learn just like any other artistic medium sure there's a

few shortcuts but literally every other medium that I've been taught has had the

professor saying do this it's easier and quicker and get you better results like

20% of learning a new medium is just learning how to use it at all and then

the rest of it is learning to do it faster and easier

so like calling something too easy feels like a cop-out to me it sounds like

you're just bitter and I don't want to you know bitter grapes thing I don't

want a bitter grapes this but it just that's what it sounds like when it's

like oh well I can't do it so it's it's too easy or something like that that's

just a really weird conundrum that I heard another thing that people say into

digital artists a lot is that you don't get a relationship with the work that

you do with traditional work like you don't get into the paint or the clay or

covered in charcoal doing digital and this would sort of confuses me

because if you can forego all the mess of it why not I mean there's a different

type of mess you've got your wires you've got your cords you've got your

laptop but it's not you know it's not my biggest fan as the next guy I'm getting

in paint but honestly I'm just as proud of my digital art that I worked hard on

and experimented with as I am with traditional art that I worked hard on

and experimented with once again it's just a different medium and messes come

in different mediums all the time you wouldn't bash watercolor just because

it's not as messy or messier than oils that's you know that just doesn't make

sense to me the third thing people say to digital

artists the ever-popular digital art is not real art which genuinely bottom of

my heart I do not understand I really don't like I put time and effort into

this piece I needed specific tools to get this done I need to spend years

getting these skills it's a visually stimulating and

interesting piece just because it's displayed on a screen instead of on

canvas or cold-press doesn't make it any less art than something that is I'm

sorry if I don't have much more clever input than that but it's truly baffling

to me but someone can look at that and think that's not real art the only thing

I can pick is that they have a gross misunderstanding of what goes into

digital art I've gotten all of these and can take them with an eye roll and a

shrug thankfully this mindset sort of seems to be going the way of the wind

but I still heard these things in school from other artists in class and it

baffled me to hear them from artists like we're being taught all the mediums

that's the idea of going to art school again it if it's not for you but that

doesn't make it a lesser art form like I'm really bad at ceramics I'm not

familiar with it nor do I care to be but you don't hear me saying that's not real

art that's just dirt water heated until it's melted I don't I would say that how

garbage does that sound so these are the three big things that people say about

digital artists and why they are all really misguided like I said in the

beginning if you're a new artist and you're just getting started you might be

really discouraged to hear some of these things and I just wanted to clear the

air and make sure you know that digital art is incredible not to toot my own

horn here but it is great and you if it's how you want to pursue

your craft you have every right to do that and that's concludes our broadcast

day leave a like if this video helped you out a comment if you have any other

questions or leave a comment if you've heard any other weird stuff said about

digital art or about any medium really I'm really curious this do people say

that like about ceramics like ceramics isn't real art you people say that about

other stuff please leave comments and tell me if they do because I would love

to know that leave a subscribe get notifications so I you can tell me give

you these juicy tidbits and that will be all thank you guys you have a good one

bye bye
