Hi! I have a very interesting curiosity for you today.
I have a friend who is very much into photography.
And he decided to print his own camera lenses
on a 3D printer.
The main objective was to build something
that would produce an interesting optical effect.
Because it's not difficult to build a copy of a lens
that we can simply buy in a store in lower price and in better quality.
The camera lenses base on achromatic lenses
that my friend Piotrek used to collect from wherever he could
by buying them at flea markets or by ordering them online.
Some of them were removed from older camera lenses.
He chose a few lenses that he found interesting.
And coud have an interesting effect.
And basing on them he tried to build entire camera lenses.
This is one of the first camera lenses that he made.
it's construction is simple.
It has quite long focal length.
You set the sharpness
by pulling out.
The second lens is much more complex
because we have
an iris.
It's composed of several blades.
This is how we set the sharpness.
The sharpness is set by pulling out, turning.
Damn, you can just print something like this by yourself.
But what interested me the most, was this tiny thing.
Fixed focal lens with fixed light, no iris blades.
It only has sharpness adjustment.
The construction of this lens is very simple.
It's made of four elements.
Two of them, when turning, adjust the sharpness by moving back the lens.
One lens plus a ring
that makes the turning easier.
And this is it.
The camera lens has an EF mount.
So in order to use it with Sony camera I will need an adapter.
First I will check the commlite
and then we will check how it works on metabones.
For the test I will use
an FS5.
This is the first run.
I have ND 1/4. Now the light is glowing into the lens
but we will obscure it.
This is how it looks.
This camera lens is an equivalent of 40 mm on full frame.
With an iris of 1.4.
1.4-1.5 basing on the calculations.
Let's see how image looks like against the sun.
It's focalized on the central part of the frame.
And on the sides we have a nice bokeh.
When we pull out...
When we maximally pull out the ring
so that's it's nearly falling off.

We have a quite nice focus macro.
This is the minimal focus distance.
As we can see the depth of field is quite paper-like.
There is a nice background blur.
So what is left is to check it with metabones ultra IV.
But it is attached to this camera so
I have to change the adapters.

I don't have any model around so you will have to look at me.
I'm trying to focalize by moving closer
and moving back.
This is the moment.
Now I'm looking into the camera lens.
An interesting effect.
This time I focalized by moving my face closer.
Cool. I like it.

I use it interchangeably with the yellow element.
It's nice with small aperture.
It's really nice.
You know what is missing? A more precise
sharpness adjustment...
Exactly.
These are the limitations of 3D print.
When making a video it is sometimes really hard to adjust.
That's right. There is no autofocus.
I'm not talking about autofocus.
It's just that a slight move makes everything blurry.
I once made a test lens with more precise adjustment.

I will move closer.
You can pull it out maximally.
It should set to macro focus.

So this one will be the macro.
Because it pulls out 4 mm more and without an intermediary ring you can have a macro lens.

It's quite difficult to focalize.

It's true that in filming it's reactivity that matters.
I was wondering in what kind of project I could use such a camera lens.
And the answer came faster than I expected.
