Basic English Grammar: How to Use WAS and WERE - Duration: 12:55.

Hi.

I'm Rebecca from engVid.

In this lesson you'll learn how to use the past tense of the verb "to be".

Now, as you know, the verb "to be" is a really important verb, so in this lesson you'll learn

how to use the words "was" and "were" correctly in English.

Now, this is a beginner's lesson, but even if you are at any level and you just want

to review the basics, this lesson will help you.

So, let's get started.

So, the verb "to be", of course, can be used in the present, in the past, and also in the future.

But in this lesson we are focusing on how to use it in the past.

I'm going to just review very quickly how to use it in the present, but I think you

already know that.

Right?

Okay.

So, when we say: "The present", what do we mean by that?

It could mean right now, it could mean this year, it could mean today.

Right?

So, for example: "I am at work right now.

Yesterday I was at home."

So when I say "was", that's the past.

The past can be yesterday, last night, last week, five years ago; any time before now

is the past.

Okay.

So, let's take another example.

"He is a manager this year.

Last year he was a worker".

"He is" becomes "He was".

Next: "She is in London today.

Yesterday she was in Paris."

Again, "is" became "was".

Another example: "It is cold today.

Yesterday it was hot."

So, once again, "is" became "was".

So what's the pattern here?

What do you see?

I know you see the pattern, so the pattern is that all of these became "was".

So: "I am", "I was"; "He is", "He was"; "She is", "She was"; "It is", "It was", right?

So all of these: "am" and "is" become "was" in the past.

All right?

Let's go to some other pronouns.

"We are studying right now.

Yesterday we were working".

"We were", make sure you pronounce that properly.

A lot of people make a mistake when they say "were".

It's not the word "where", like the question.

It's "were".

Okay?

Say it with me: "We were studying."

Good.

Or, sorry: "We were working."

All right.

Another example: "You are married today.

Yesterday you were single."

Okay?

Somebody just got married.

All right.

"They are here right now, but a few hours ago they were over there."

Okay?

All right.

So, what do you see here?

Another pattern.

Whatever is "are" in the present tense becomes "were" in the past tense, that's all.

So there's only two possibilities in the past tense: "was" or "were".

Okay?

So, here's a little review: "am" and "is" become "was"; and "are" becomes "were".

Now, one last little point: "was" and "were" can be used by themselves.

Okay?

So this can be a verb used by itself.

For example: "It was hot."

This is just the verb "to be" by itself, or "was" and "were" can be used as helping verbs.

For example: "We were working."

Okay?

So that's just a little something to keep in mind.

Now, next, you'll learn how to use "was" and "were" in English.

Now let's look at how to use "was" and "were" in positive sentences, negative sentences,

and also in questions.

Okay?

So, as you've already learned: "I", "He", "She", and "It" all use "was".

Right?

"I was at home", "He was at home", "She was at home", "It was at home".

"It" can be for a thing, for example, a cellphone.

All right?

If you want to make that sentence negative, then basically in English what we have to

add is the word "not": "I was not", but when we're speaking we don't usually say: "I was

not at home."

We just say something a little shorter, we say: "I wasn't at home."

Do you want to repeat that after me so you can learn how to pronounce it really well?

"I wasn't at home."

Now, when you're writing it, just remember that the apostrophe goes where we take out

the "o".

So: "was" and "not", take out the "o" and add the apostrophe, and then you'll not only

say it perfectly, you'll also spell it perfectly.

Good.

So: "I was", "I wasn't".

And then to make a question, we just change the order.

Same word, right?

"Was I at home?

I don't remember.", "Was he at school?", "Was she at work?", "Was it on the shelf?"

Okay?

So you're just changing the order when you make a question, so that's pretty straightforward.

Now let's look at what happens with: "We", "You", and "They".

For that we have to use "were".

"We were", "You were", "They were".

And how do we make it negative?

Again, you only add the word "not".

So, if you were to say the full thing, you would say: "We were not at home", but as I

said, usually we shorten it, we contract it, and it sounds like this: "We weren't at home."

Repeat after me: "We weren't at home.", "You weren't at home.", "They weren't at home."

All right?

And if you want to make a question, same principle, same rule, again, you put the word "were"

before, so: "Were we at home?", "Were you at school?", "Were they at work?"

Okay?

So you're just changing the order.

Now, how do you know that you know all of these things?

When you can make a positive sentence, a negative sentence, and a question.

So take one of them.

For example, just take a simple sentence.

Don't add a lot of vocabulary; keep it really simple.

"He was tired."

Right?

"He was tired."

Make it negative: "He wasn't tired."

Make it a question: "Was he tired?"

All right?

So take any of these pronouns...

These are all called pronouns, and make simple sentences, then make them negative, and then

make them into a question.

And when you can do that easily, then you have learned how to use "was" and "were".

Next we'll do some practice so you can get really good at this.

So now we have eight sentences on the board and you're going to help me fill in the blanks

with "was" or "were".

Let's go.

Number one: "Mr. Williams _______ at the meeting."

Do we say: "Mr. Williams was at the meeting" or "Mr. Williams were at the meeting"?

What do we say?

"Mr. Williams was at the meeting."

Very good.

"Her classes _______ interesting.

Her classes _______ interesting."

"was" or "were", which one?

"Her classes were interesting", because it's "classes", right?

It's plural.

It's like "they".

Very good.

"My suitcase _______ very heavy.

My suitcase _______ very heavy."

My suitcase is like what that we learned?

It, it's one thing.

So: "My suitcase was very heavy."

Very good.

"The stores _______ closed."

The stores, it's plural.

It's like "they", so what do we say?

They were closed.

Very good.

Number five: "It _______ raining yesterday."

"It was raining" or "It were raining", which one sounds right?

By now if you say it out loud, you will also hear what's correct.

It...

"It was raining."

Okay, good.

Number six: "I _______ hungry.

I _______ hungry."

So, what should it be?

"I was hungry" or "I were hungry"?

"I was", always "was".

"I was".

Number seven: "_______ you late?"

"Was you late?" or "Were you late?"

Which one is correct?

"Were you", okay?

Very important because we often ask questions to other people, right?

So this one with "you" is really important.

"Were you on time?", "Were you late?", "Were you in a meeting?", "Were you at home?"

Lots and lots of questions that we ask like that, so pay attention to that one, okay?

And number eight: "We _______ in Brazil."

We...

What should it be?

"We were in Brazil."

Okay?

Now, let's really quickly go through them and make them negative, because you can do

it, I know you can.

"Mr. Williams was at the meeting.

Mr. Williams wasn't".

You say it with me, okay?

"Her classes weren't interesting.", "My suitcase wasn't very heavy.", "The stores weren't closed.",

"It wasn't raining yesterday.", "I wasn't hungry.", "Weren't you late?"

Yes, you can ask a question like that.

"Weren't you late?"

You can ask a negative question also.

Okay?

Good for you.

And: "We weren't in Brazil."

Okay.

Report: 5 Top Democrat Senators On Track To Lose Their Seats In 2018 Midterms

Democrats complain non-stop that the Trump White House is an unmitigated disaster in

complete disarray, and the blue wave is coming to retake the House and Senate in November

2018.

But closer examination reveals those claims to be like the owner of a glass house throwing

stones.

Democrats have absolutely no message – outside of being as anti-Trump as humanly possible,

that is – and that simply doesn't translate to engaging voters that aren't overdosing

on liberal-flavored Kool-Aid.

As such, Democrats may want to temper their hopes for the midterm elections, as signs

are pointing to another incredibly rough patch for the party that remains without a coherent

message.

Washington Examiner has the details.

Ten Democratic senators are defending their seats in states President Trump won in the

2016 presidential election, and five of those lawmakers are at risk of losing to their Republican

opponents, according to a new Axios poll.

Sens. Jon Tester, D-Mont., Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., and Joe Donnelly,

D-Ind., are the most vulnerable, and have approval ratings of about 50 percent in their

respective states.

Trump's approval in these four states is well above that of these four senators.

We can also add Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., to that list, as she's currently trailing

her GOP opponent.

It's not a coincidence that the president is awfully popular in the respective states.

As a result, the Democratic incumbents that are continually pointing at the sky that never

falls are going to have a hard time getting voters to buy their non-existent message.

The poll is a reality check of sorts for Democrats, who have designs on taking back the House

and Senate this year.

Losing five of their own seats would make it much harder for Democrats to tip the balance

in the Senate, which is now commanded by Republicans with a narrow 51-49 majority.

In five other states, Democrats have narrow-to-moderate leads — Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania

and Florida.

Trump's approval rating is below 50 percent in each of those states save Pennsylvania.

The Democrats current strategy can be boiled down to a couple of simple points.

Trump is awful, so you should really come with us, even though we have absolutely no

idea how to improve the country.

Along the way, we'll be sure to make sure everyone continues to feel angry and divided

because at least that gives us all something to talk about.

That strategy may appear to be foolproof in the confines of the liberal echo chamber,

but the results of the polls back on Earth tell a vastly different story.

According to Diario Gol, Liverpool want to bring Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric back

to the Premier League at the end of the season.

Liverpool have already lined up the signing of RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita this summer,

but it is understood that head coach Jurgen Klopp wants more reinforcements in that area

of the field as Emre Can's future has not been resolved.

According to Diario Gol, Modric has emerged as Liverpool's main midfield target, with

the Croatian's future the subject of much speculation.

The 32-year-old has made 31 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions this season,

whilst he is closing on 250 matches for the club that he joined in the summer of 2012.

Despite Modric's standing at the Bernabeu, it has previously been suggested that the

midfielder could leave as part of a shake-up at Los Blancos this summer.

It would make sense for Liverpool to be interested in one of the best central midfielders in

European football,

but a lot would have to happen for the Reds to be able to seal the Croatia international's

signature.

Modric scored 17 times in 159 appearances for Tottenham between 2008 and 2012 before

leaving to join Real Madrid, and he is still held in high regard by the Spurs fans.

Modric is contracted to Real Madrid until the summer of 2020, but he is not getting

any younger, and this summer might well see the Croatian return to English football.

Liverpool are reportedly confident of battling their Premier League rivals for his signature,

and it is shaping up to be a very interesting potential transfer saga.

Peach Trees Grown From Seed - 17 Months Old - Duration: 3:58.

Hey everyone it's Rob the backyard gardenerr and it's time to update you on my

peach trees grown from seed

for those of you that are new to my channel I do want to remind you or at

least let you know I should say that I started these peach trees from seed on

October 2nd 2016 so they're right around 17 months just over 17 months old last

year right around the ten month mark I planted one of my peach trees outside

and the second one didn't make it but in this video I'll update you on the one

that's now 17 months old as well as four new ones that are six months old and

look fantastic without further ado let's go take a look

at these peach trees alright guys thought I'd give you an

update on my 17 month old peach tree now obviously it's the middle of March so it

just started to break its buds obviously this is only going into its second year

so there's not gonna be any flowering I'll show you an example of a couple of

young or older peach trees that have some flowers this year I've got a nice

canopy going on it as far as a goblet shape you've seen it in the previous

videos but yeah this suckers are doing just fine pretty healthy trunk it's a

low profile one it seems like all peach trees grown from seed always tend to be

shorter Dwarfs style varieties unlike apples and unlike plums that can be

unpredictable and heights can generally be huge the peach trees seem to always be a

lot smaller it's kind of cool though I'm not gonna get any fruits or flowers this

year maybe next year at the earliest but this year we're gonna focus on canopy

construction and we're gonna focus on growth I want to keep this guy probably

about ten feet tall and I want to leave on a lot of gross spurs and growth buds

because I'm hoping that next year or the year after we can get some flowers and

some fruit seventeen months old I hadn't given you an update since the one-year

mark on October 2nd now strategically I've planted them here because it's

always best to have cross pollinators of peach trees and I got a couple of

varieties I've got a harvester peach this one's three years old finally

getting some flowers this year getting them early piece trees are

always the first to break buds in my opinion then we've got a Loring peach

tree over here both of these peach trees there this

one's a monster I probably need to take about two feet off the top maybe three

feet I just didn't get a chance this year and the saps running so I'm not

really willing to cut them down now and risk killing some of the branches but

it's a mess a little bit who cares it'll still produce and at the end of

the day if I get any fruit up that high we'll let the birds get to it they

always get them anyway but that's by lowering peach alright guys here's the

other four plants the other peach trees I've started from seed about six months

ago it didn't I don't know the exact date because I just wanted to some

plants inside just to kind of hedge my bet since I'm down to that one outside

that you saw this doing fantastic so probably not a lot of need for these but

to any extent I wanted to give them a shot they're just your standard everyday

store-bought peaches so not really sure the variety and they're not going to

produce true to seed anyway but you can see I've already trimmed them topped

them quite a few times just to keep them indoors the plan is to get these guys

outdoors I'll fix I'll pick a spot for them and see how they do

somewhere around with those other peach trees are but I wanted to give you an

update on them just because these will be part of the peach tree series this

year and throughout the next few years it's been a while since I've shown you a

lot of things and I apologize for my absence anyway I hope you enjoyed the
