Are You Related To Royalty? - Duration: 5:42.

In 2016, the British tabloids were abuzz with the news that one of the country's biggest

celebrities, the cheeky, rakish, gallivanting cockney called Danny Dyer, was related to

royalty.

How could this be, Danny grew up on the mean streets of East London and speaks the argot

of a true working class "geezer."

Well, we might all be surprised where our genealogy – family history – leads to.

In 2015, a man from Maryland, USA, claimed he was the rightful King of the Isle of Man

– located in the Irish Sea between England and Scotland.

This revelation came after he was contacted by a genealogist who told him the throne was

his.

The Queen wasn't keen on the idea.

Today we will do a bit of digging and find out if you could have noble blood running

through your veins, in this episode of the Infographics Show, Are YOU related to royalty?

As you'll know from our show on names, surnames originated in a complex manner and it differs

from country to country.

If we take England in the Middle Ages, people were often given surnames based on what they

did as an occupation, where they came from, or simply whose son they were.

Smith was of course from "blacksmith" and Williams was the "son of William."

The Romans were keen on having surnames, but other European cultures were not.

Certain surnames were also unusual.

Researchers at the University of California and the London School of Economics actually

looked into some unusual surnames to see which ones often had aristocrat connections.

The surnames Atthill, Bunduck, Balfour, Bramston, Cheslyn, and Conyngham were all said to be

linked with nobility, more so than other last names.

Indeed, they found that there was a corollary between certain names and wealth.

But what does it mean if your name is Smith?

Well, imagine all the royals of Britain over the centuries and how many kids they had,

including the many bastards born in the Middle Ages.

That's a lot, says one genealogy website, stating that "practically everyone alive

with British ancestry will have a connection" with a king."

Can that be true.

One website called Royal Family Tree let's you search your surname and brings up a bunch

of royals and landed gentry sharing that name.

The name we used, one of our writers, is shared with some of these aristocratic persons.

In fact, if you've got a British surname – there are plenty of those all over the

world – one research agency cited in the Huffington Post in 2011 said there's a good

chance you are related to nobility or royalty.

If you live in the UK, it said there is a 20 percent chance.

In fact, thousands of people who posted their family tree on the website MyHeritage had

King George III somewhere in that tree.

Any number of these families could be related to you, never mind if you are in the UK, US

or somewhere else.

You shouldn't get too excited though, as Gizmodo wrote in 2015.

Having royal blood might not be as special as you think.

Let's just forget about names and think about bloodline.

People can test their DNA these days, and if they do they might be surprised to find

they come from royalty.

How is this?

In an article in The Guardian in 2015 geneticist Adam Rutherford explained that if you are

of European extraction, which means a hell of a lot of you watching this show, then you

are related by blood to the famous King Charlemagne.

He had 18 kids with lots of women during his lifetime from 742 to 814.

You see, you know you have two parents, and you know you have four grandparents.

They had parents and grandparents, too.

If you kept adding that up by the time you went back a thousand years you would have

had more relations than people were alive back then.

What this means, explain genealogists, is that the further you go back the smaller the

web is.

Rutherford explained, "Basically, everyone alive in the ninth century who left descendants

is the ancestor of every living European today."

He says, if you are white you have a bit of everything in you, meaning you'll be part

Viking, part Celt, part Anglo-Saxon, etc.

Now we can take this a little further.

How related to you is another person watching this video at the same time?

The answer is you are related because we all share common ancestors.

In fact, it's said that everyone alive on the planet today will have a common ancestor

that lived around 2000 years ago.

We are all inbred to some extent.

The question is, can we find out who are common ancestor is?

This question is a subject that is studied, called the Most Recent Common Ancestor, or

MRCA.

Is there a single person from the past that can be connected to everyone alive today?

Was there one little group of the first humans that led to the explosion of mankind.

In the bible that could be said to be Adam and Eve and their kids Cain, Able, and Seth.

It's thought they had daughters, too, and perhaps incestually they had children of their

own.

The bible is a bit sketchy here.

According to Bible.org there was indeed incest, but it was ok because Adam and Eve were created

by the hand of God.

Anyway, let's now move back to the scientific point of view.

Did we all come from a small group of people?

It seems so.

We can trace our DNA back to one single female, she's called the first matrilineal ancestor

or the Mitochondrial Eve and is thought to have existed around 200,000 years ago, or

thereabouts.

At 10,000 years we have something called the identical ancestor point, which means anyone

alive back then is the ancestor of everyone alive today.

One scientist writing on Quora states, "Everyone alive today has at least one single ancestor

in common with everyone else on Earth, and that person may have lived 200 - 300 generations

ago."

That means, said the writer, that if that ancestor were to come back to life to have

a big family reunion, we would all have to attend.

We could even accept that we are all made of stars as all elements were formed at the

heart of a star.

The brilliant Carl Sagan once famously said, "We are a way for the universe to know itself.

Some part of our being knows this is where we came from.

We long to return.

And we can, because the cosmos is also within us.

We're made of star stuff."

So, now you know.

We are all related, and indeed, we share some royal DNA.

But what does that matter?

It's nice to know we all basically came from the same place and in some sense, are

connected.

Fox News Is Feeding Trump's Dangerous Paranoia And Psychosis - Duration: 3:58.

It's been a few weeks since we've seen any real stories emerge questioning Donald Trump's

sanity or his mental stability, but the reason for that is because we don't need anymore

think pieces on whether or not Donald Trump is mentally stable enough to be the president

of the United States.

All we need to do is look at his Twitter feed, and what he has been tweeting within the last

week or two shows that this man is almost, at this point, certifiable.

Earlier this week, Donald Trump, while watching Fox News, decided to go on a live tweeting

spree and quote some of the people on Fox News talking about the fact that these investigations

haven't shown any evidence yet, which, again, five people have pled guilty, so that's really

not exactly no evidence.

Not to mention the fact that they haven't even released the evidence that they have

found.

So, sure, there's no evidence yet that we can see.

That doesn't mean that investigators don't have it, you moron.

But, nonetheless, Donald Trump went off the rails tweeting people on Fox and Friends that

he believes exonerates him and other Fox News programs, Hannity, Tucker Carlson, and the

like.

But on Tuesday morning, a tweet came out from Donald Trump that just, in all caps, said,

"WITCH HUNT!"

At 6:49 a.m. on February 27, 2018, "WITCH HUNT!"

That was it.

There was no other context.

It wasn't attached to another tweet.

Just said, "WITCH HUNT!"

This man has lost his damn mind.

He is literally doing the same thing that Richard Nixon did before he was forced to

resign from office because he was facing impeachment.

He doesn't even realize that the things he says mirror what Nixon said.

The problem of it all is Fox News.

They are feeding the president's psychosis and paranoia because at the same time that

he's tweeting out that he's been exonerated because there's no evidence, Fox News runs

segments saying Hillary Clinton should be investigated and there's tons of evidence

everywhere, so Trump starts tweeting that out.

His paranoia about this woman who hasn't been active in politics for a year.

He is still so obsessed with her because she won the popular vote that he'll stop at nothing

to take her down with him, and Fox News is feeding it.

The crazier Fox News gets, the crazier the president gets.

It is a very real problem for people in the United States.

We already saw this past summer when Donald Trump was watching footage that Fox News was

showing of an attack years and years ago, and he tweeted out that we have to do something

about this because he didn't realize that that footage was a decade old.

That's what happens when you have a simpleton running this country who gets his information

not from his intelligence briefings every day, but from Fox News.

Fox understands it.

They know their role.

During our lives, our strength, will, and endurance is tested.

To overcome these obstacles, we must show great depth of character and physical resilience.

When you're up against nature though, anything can happen.

You must dig deep within yourself to survive.

These life and death struggles aren't accurately portrayed on reality television shows.

Those battles against nature and the elements are staged to shock and entertain the audience.

They don't show the specific sacrifices those trapped in nature's clutches must

make to come out alive.

Kaylynn Johnson, from Union Gap, Washington, knows these sacrifices firsthand.

The 20-year-old went camping with her family in the Naches National Forest, but got lost

and remained alone and out-of-touch from the world for eight days.

Kaylynn was riding on the back of a motorcycle with a family friend when the bike wiped out,

sending Kaylynn and 61-year-old Patrick Frawley down a slope.

As they got up, the two lost their bearings and vanished into the dense forest.

They managed to make camp that first night, but the next day Frawley encouraged Kaylynn

to go on without him.

"He told me to separate from him because he has heart problems and blood clots and

stuff like that.

And he did not want me seeing him dying or anything," Kaylynn recalled.

Kaylynn followed her friend's advice; she endured being eaten alive by mosquitoes and

other bugs as she followed the Naches River through the trees as Frawley had instructed.

She searched for signs of life or anyone who could help her find her way back, but for

days she saw nothing but forest.

It took eight days before Kaylynn finally noticed a glimmer of hope.

She spotted a truck driving down a nearby road.

Robert, the truck driver, had no idea Kaylynn was fighting for her life just yards away

from him, but when his dog started acting strangely, he stopped to investigate.

That's when he noticed Kaylynn.

"I yelled, 'Help,' and Robert's dog heard me yell and he was looking for where

the yelling was coming from.

Then Robert looked and kept looking, and he saw me waving my hands," said Kaylynn.

With assistance from a hiker named Matt, Robert got Kaylynn in his truck.

He drove her to a local fire station where she had an emotional reunion with her mother.

Kaylynn described how she kept the faith while being on her own in the wilderness for so

long: "The song, I sing it in my heart all the time, it's 'Jesus Take the Wheel,'

by Carrie Underwood.

I sung that song the night I went missing and when I got home, it came on the radio."

Kaylynn lost twenty pounds during her ordeal, but she survived.

Her faith, will to live, and persistence helped her meet and defeat the challenge she faced.

She will have this true story to tell for years to come.

It will serve as the perfect example of how believing in yourself and your abilities can

save your life.

As for Frawley, he was thankfully found on State Route 410 near and was taken to Virginia

Mason Memorial hospital in Yakima.

He was listed in good condition.

The NRA Is Feeling The Wrath of Corporate America - Duration: 5:26.

I love this.

I love what happened with this Georgia Governor.

The Governor comes out and he says to Delta Airlines, they're in Georgia.

Right.

They've got, what, 30,000 employees in Georgia?

Right.

So Delta says we're gonna end the contract that we have with the NRA where we fly your

people to the annual convention for less money and some other things that we do for them.

We're gonna kill that contract.

This Governor, this Casey Kagel who is a absolute nutcase by the way.

Just Google the guy, you'll see plenty of really nutty stories about this guy.

He comes out and he says, "Well, if you do that I'm gonna dry up your tax base."

I mean, your tax base in the sense that we give you all kinds of breaks.

Right.

And we're gonna take those breaks away.

You're not gonna get these tax breaks anymore.

What is your take on this case?

Well, first of all, you've got to applaud Delta.

I mean, just to even just stand up and say, "We're not going to help push the NRA's agenda.

We're not gonna give 'em any breaks."

I'll tell you what, for any legislator to use their power to enforce their own position

on the NRA against a business as large as Delta, it quite frankly shows you why we're

in the position that you are.

That you can go buy an automatic rifle from one of these huge stores because everyone's

afraid of what the retaliation's gonna be.

Okay, let's talk about this a little more though.

I mean, you know, first of all, I really hope he pushes this because 33,000 voters-

Employees, right.

-employees with Delta and you know that they're gonna be motivated to vote.

This guy needs to be voted out.

He's a complete utter freak.

But he must think that by him doing this that he's actually gonna charge up his voter base.

Right.

But that's not what government's supposed to do.

The government's not supposed to punish somebody for taking a stand.

First of all, it's unconstitutional.

Absolutely.

I mean, they're there to protect the minority.

Delta has a First Amendment right to say there are things I do agree with and there are things

I don't agree with.

Right.

And we don't agree with what we've been doing in the past and that's giving the NRA people

a break on their travel.

We have the right to express that belief and that statement.

So what they say is, "You know, we're not gonna do it anymore."

When a Governor believes that he can then interfere with that constitutional right and

he then shows we're gonna punish you for your First Amendment right.

That is a whole different level of scrutiny that the court looks at when they say ... this

could end up actually with sanctions to the Governor.

I kind of hope he pushes this because he's a terrible- this guy is a freak.

I'm telling you, go look at Casey Kagel, Republican in Georgia.

You're gonna see the guy's got a history of nuts.

Think about what his next step is now is it Dick's Sporting Goods that just came out that

we're not gonna sell anymore automatic rifles and he says, "You know, I don't like that."

I tell you what, I'm gonna do the same thing I did with Delta.

I think you should be able to buy automatic rifles at Dick's, we're gonna take away some

of your tax incentives that we gave you for buying property and you need to sell automatic

rifles.

That's not what his job is to push his own political agenda and shove that First Amendment

right down Delta's throat or if Dick's wants to stop selling automatic rifles that he can

push that agenda.

That's not what he's there for, not what he's intended to do.

Yeah, as you see these stories, you're gonna see a lot more corporations ... what happened,

and I love this part of the story, is on the internet now you can go to ThinkProgress.

Right.

ThinkProgress gives you a list of people depending on what your feeling about guns are, I mean

you may be a gun lover.

Well, that's your right, but there are people who disagree with basic things like there

ought to be a cooling off period when somebody buys a gun.

You ought to be able to be mentally sound before you buy.

Right, criteria to go buy a gun.

You shouldn't be able to be 15 years old and go buy a gun.

Right.

Common sense.

But ThinkProgress, they put together a really good list that you can go look at and you

can say these are corporations that are so tied with the hip to what the NRA is doing

and I disagree with what the NRA is doing on these things and you make the decision,

I don't want to do business with those corporations.

I think it's extremely important that those types of things that social media gets those

kinds of things out.

Can you imagine corporate media trying to accomplish that?

No, absolutely not and I hope Delta gets a surge in profits for taking a stand and it

backfires on them.

My take is that that's exactly what's gonna happen.

The momentum right now that's picked up with people saying, "Enough is enough."

The only problem is you actually don't have legislators around, so few of them have any

courage whatsoever.

That's showing through here.

This is such a critically important ... you know, the legislators in Florida they're running

for the hills.

There's no discussion about it, Republicans aren't talking about it.

When Democrats talk about it they sound stupid in the way that they talk about it.

There's some very serious things that can be done.

Easy.

How about requiring insurance when somebody has a gun?

Insurance covers the person with the use of that gun because that'll close things down

twice.

People from outside whenever they came here

they just like, "Wow! What a dress."

Why is it so big?"

It's like a diamond.

As a fashion editor for Refinery29,

I've been to fashion shows all over the world—

from Gucci in Milan to Victoria's Secret in Shanghai.

But I've never been to one in Africa,

let alone in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia.

In three days, I have a seat at Windhoek's

second fashion week ever.

Straight lines, straight lines.

This year the buzz is all about the modern

makeover of a dress, which an ethnic group

has kept in style for over a hundred years.

They are the Herero.

And this is the dress.

Adopted from German colonizers,

its hemline, puffy sleeves and large petticoats

are unmistakably victorian.

But it's not a 19th century relic.

It's a living symbol of a history I had

no idea existed.

Esther is a historian and activist.

It is her life's mission to speak out about

what happened to the Herero people.

Tell me about the genocide.

Between 1904 and 1907,

70% of the Herero people were killed.

Once one of Namibia's largest and wealthiest

indigenous groups, the Herero were nearly annihilated.

The Herero women took a dress once worn by

their oppressors and made it an emblem of

who they are, and how far they've come.

In Otjomuise, a village on the outskirts of

Windhoek, 12-year-old Pahaje is about to become

a part of this lineage.

I joined her for what is perhaps the most

significant milestone of a young Herero girl's life—

getting her first dress.

Are you proud to be Herero?

Extremely proud because God made me that way.

I have to appreciate the way he made me.

I wouldn't want to be somebody else instead

of me myself.

Are you excited to go shopping for the fabric?

Yeah, I'm really so excited.

Pahaje, her mother Noko and I, went to pick out fabric.

Getting your first dress is a rite of passage.

They are handmade and often only worn once.

So I think that if you have a bunch of accessories,

you want to go for shorter sleeves then so

it doesn't, you know.

Do you want the sleeves to be flat or kinda like puffy?

A little bit up--puffy.

I thought you said you were going to have her choose.

It's covered in pearls.

That's really cool.

You can mix this one with gold.

Yeah, what do you think?

Yeah, I think it would be cool.

As Pahaje takes her fabric to a traditional

Herero designer, the history of Pahaje's

people will be stitched into the fabric of

her first dress.

Its debut will mark her entry into womanhood.

That tradition is what grounds another young woman,

who is about to make a debut of her own,

at fashion week.

Being Herero means everything to me.

It's my heritage, it's where I draw strength from.

My character, my values.

From the village, to the city and now to the catwalk,

Varaa is bringing her past into the

future in a modern Herero dress.

This is the living room.

Look at all the photos on the walls.

Yeah.

It's all my extended family.

This is my grandparents.

This is my aunt and uncle on their wedding day.

And look, they're all wearing the Herero dress.

The dress is the Ohorokova.

The Ohorokova, the head thing.

What is this called?

That's called the Oshikaiva.

The Oshikaiva was added as a sign of the cow,

the symbol of the Herero people.

Oshikaiva has changed so much from

photo to photo.

Yeah it depends on the ages and the times.

Like that one's huge.

That's my mom's one was huge.

It looks really modern.

Fashion is a revolving door.

Yeah yeah yeah.

When you grow up Herero, how much of a part of it was

in your everyday life?

Until I came into Windhoek in 2009 and I was

pretty much like a village girl.

My whole life was Herero traditions.

You wake up, you make fire, you make tea.

Then you go and you milk the cows.

I feel like a lot of the Herero girls and

different tribal groups, we try too much to

move away from our cultures when that's

a very important part of who we are.

And I don't think it's something to disregard

or just throw away.

Tell me about Windhoek Fashion Week.

I'm so excited for that.

Because this is the first time I'll be walking

in my traditional attire and I'll be doing

it at Fashion Week.

So it's like my two loves coming together.

My fashion and my traditional heritage.

I would actually love to see your walk.

her dress is planning to stir up controversy.

Do you want to incorporate something else,

like a lighter… trim it with a belt or something?

I'm actually known for the way I've tried

to modernize the dress.

It makes it easier for young people to wear

it and a way of keeping the dress alive.

My mother has a laundry business.

I definitely had a very strong connection

because when we were young, customers bring

in a wedding gown and I would look at how

it's made.

So when my mother was at work I would cut

out expensive bedding and come up with a dress

or something.

My family's business really inspired my career.

How much left do you have to do?

I need to steam a few and then, I'm done.

McBright is giving me a sneak peak of Varaa's dress.

What did you modify on this dress?

The jacket, the sleeve, the collar here, the arms...

That's dramatic.

You know, the only thing that I kept was the length.

This is one petticoat?

This is heavy, but this is the only way we've

got to modify it.

There's shorts under here. It's totally sheer.

Yeah, so I know it's really going to shock everybody.

As a Herero yourself, are you worried about

that, though?

You know, change is something difficult,

I understand, but people need to get used to the change.

One shoulder!

I love that piece of flair on the shoulder.

I mean, I have no words.

I literally have no words.

I'm still on the high, so yeah.

Did you ever think that the first time you

Amidst the mounting frenzy backstage, Varaa

I've been to many fashion weeks before but

there is an electricity here like nothing

I've experienced.

I can feel how big of a moment this is not

just for Windhoek, but for the Herero.

fashion gives visibility to a people whose

history has been overlooked.

I come to the gym because I want to live to be 100.

or have a cane or anything else.

I don't want to be in an assisted living facility.

I don't want to be a burden to my children.

I'm going to take care of myself.

It's determination.

And that's why I come to the gym.

I stay away from McDonald's.

I eat healthy.

And that's what keeps me going.

And that, my friends, is exactly why I wanted you

Now, the biggest key to stay motivated

is to find at least 1 person, at least 1 person that

inspires you, right?

That gentleman inspires me.

It's not a secret that over 40 years old

it gets a little more difficult and challenging.

Is Twitch Accessible? | Get To The Poynt #1 - Duration: 5:01.

Hello.

So, we have a new series on this channel.

If you were with me last year,

I did a series called Deaf Poynters

where I filmed deaf and sometimes disability-related questions in my car,

kind of like when Meghan Tonjes did People Keep Talking in her car.

I did that and then eventually I stopped doing that

because it became summer and it was too hot to do it in the car

and I couldn't put the air-conditioning on

'cause it was gonna mess with the audio but...heh.

So, I decided to bring it up again

because I wanted to bring more content to this channel

and I wanted to try to do three videos a week

and I thought why not, kind of, rebirth Deaf Poynters

but make it more of, like, more topics and not just name it Deaf Poynters

because, when you name it 'Deaf' Poynters,

it just sounds like it's just gonna be about one kind of topic.

So, to start off, we are going to be talking about Twitch and accessibility

because we have a question from Colin today.

"How accessible is Twitch for streamers and for viewers?

"What could Twitch do better?"

So, like with any live streaming thing,

it's not really too accessible when you think about it.

Like, there's no option for live captions as far as I know.

It's kind of like with Facebook.

Facebook has live captioning

but you have to have a third party connected and doing the work

in order to get that done.

It's not like YouTube's automatic captioning, but in live streaming form.

Honestly, I feel like it's hard to say what can make Twitch more accessible

besides captions.

For me, I found it accessible to me because I know how to use it.

Well, I know how to do the basics.

Anything more extravagant like all these fancy graphics, I'm just like,

'I have no idea what the heck you people are doing and how you are doing it.'

I try my best to SimCom.

I know I'm against SimCom

but, when you have a hearing and deaf audience together,

you kinda have to make do with what you can

and I try to get my viewers to transcribe a little bit,

like, not necessarily having them do it word for word because they're not

captioners, they're not professional CART people

but, just, like, getting the gist, summarising what I'm saying.

So, if I'm playing a more slow-paced game,

I can try to SimCom my way through it

so my deaf audience who knows ASL knows what I'm saying.

Those who don't know ASL and are deaf or have hearing loss,

it is a little bit more difficult to try to get everyone involved.

If I'm playing something like Fortnite or PUBG,

where I have to stay focused on the game,

because I can't just, like, stand there

because I'm gonna get shot and I'm gonna die, so I try to...

It's very difficult.

Gaming and making that stuff accessible is kind of difficult.

One thing I would suggest all streamers to do is,

if you're playing a game that has the subtitle option,

turn it on, because it can be difficult to understand what the game is saying.

It's easier for me personally

to hear what the streamer is saying with earphones in,

but I can never understand what the game is saying,

because animated mouths don't move the same way as human mouths.

The volume in the computer is going to be different than the volume in the mic,

I feel, so it's just...

If you are a streamer, fellow streamer, if the captions are available,

the subtitles, please turn them on for your viewers.

Other than that, I'm drawing a blank as to how Twitch could really be better.

what we would do is we would cut holes in the stripe so you could then pump up the bladders on the inside

[Steve] Don't press too hard because you don't want to cut the paint or chrome like you said.

[Jay] Just a very, very light score. just enough so I can see where the line is.

and it's just a channel dedicated to the lives of my cats.

But we don't make just, you know,

cute kitty videos, we make funny videos,

we tell stories, we play games,

we use special effects, we just like to have fun.

But people don't realize just how hard it is

to actually make these videos, of course,

because we have the world's smallest cat,

so let me introduce you to Sparta.

C'mere bud.

So this is Sparta, and Sparta is what they call

a nano cat.

Now nano cats are incredibly rare,

but in nature they probably are

a lot more common, it's just that people

aren't necessarily aware that they exist.

So when we make videos, I actually use

this camera, it's just a little tiny camera

with a little tiny lens, and a little tiny sensor,

and we put him in front of a makeshift green screen studio,

that way we can blow him up to make him

look like a normal size cat in our videos.

The nice thing about nano cats

is they are extremely low maintenance,

like all you got to do is get a litter pan

about that big, sprinkle a little bit

of cornstarch in there, and then in the morning,

you know, you just shave off a little bit of cat food

and droplet of water, that's it.

I mean, they're just like normal cats, you know.

You just kinda give 'em a little love and attention

and, you know, they just, they do their thing.
