My name is Karishma Dev Dube I'm an Indian filmmaker based
in New York
I'm the writer/director of the short film Devi:Goddess
It's about a young girl called Tara who lives with a
single mother and their trusted household maid
And it's a bit of a conventional family that kind of has to
redefine itself because of something that happened
according to current societal norms
It basically deals with issues of sexuality and class
within a contemporary Indian family setting
like a household which is similar to the one
I grew up in
I'm always constantly writing about my mother
and I feel like our relationship had been
defined by many big confrontations
over the last 20 years or whatever
and I think it was just me trying to explore
one moment which kind of defined our relationship
It was my intention was to basically explore class
before it became a story about two women
The relationship between the two leads, Tara and her maid Devi
there's no reality in which that relationship can exist in India
More so because of class than sexuality
Class seeps into every interaction you have with
anyone in a country like India
It's the most prominent way to discriminate
So the film is basically playing with that theme a liitle
bit more. You know, who we are at home and portray ourselves
to be
People will go to far lengths to preserve their reputation
than to keep the people they love happy
I had a tough time finding festivals that could have a
bigger reach to wider audiences
What I'm really looking forward to is just kind of putting the
film online and finding it's way to people in India
I remember very much being this person when I was young
and I was looking for something to watch that I could connect to
Especially to have content like this, to have them star people
who look like me
If some day this film can make someone feel less alone
it's basically what I really want out of the work
I think it's important now because - there's a place like
America where it's legal and women and men who like
women and men can have families and it's kind of evolving into a
new family structure
but there's also places like India where I'm from where
it's vehemently oppressed still, in spite of being a part of
a culture for centuries, it's completely suppressed
in even liberal circles of our society
So it's more important to have these platforms and have this
dialouge exist and normalise this existence and kind of
remove the otherness
Hopefully in a couple of years we won't need to have a
special platform for LGBTQ films
We'll just have a direct connection with our audiences
But we do need to train and bridge the gap and find
these people and making that relationship between LGBTQ
content makers and audience members to have an easier
access to each other
so we can somehow become self- sufficient
and, you know, don't need the help
So this is great and I'm very proud to be a part of it
