190 years ago died Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes,
exactly on April 16, 1828.
He was one of the most outstanding Spanish painters.
In 1780 he became a member of the San Fernando Academy,
and in 1786, the court painter Karol III
(he painted, among others, "Portrait of Charles III in a hunting outfit", 1788).
In the 1980s, he made paintings in the Basilica Nuestra Señora del Pilar in Zaragoza, paintings to the cathedral in Valencia
and to the altar of Saint Bernardine from Siena at the San Francisco el Grande church in Madrid,
as well as numerous portraits.
Then he painted an expressive series of small paintings (including "Deluge", "Fire", "Courtyard of Madmen")
and scenes with witches ("Witches' Sabbath") - 1794 - Lázaro Galdiano Museum, Madrid).
In 1795 he became the director of the painting department at the San Fernando Academy.
After returning to Madrid, he painted one of the extremely rare acts in Spanish painting,
frontally covered lying Madrid beauty entitled "Maja Naga"
and an identically composed image of her dressed in clothes entitled "Maja dressed up".
One of his most famous works.
In 1798, he created well-known paintings in the church of San Antonio de la Florida in Madrid.
In the 90s, Goya's work appeared
fantastic themes, e.g. the graphic series "Los Caprichos" ['the capriciousness'] (1799).
As a court painter of Charles IV (from 1799)
he made portraits of the king, his family
(e.g. "The Charles IV Family" 1800) and other court dignitaries.
He portrayed the atrocities of the Napoleonic era in a series of engravings "Desastres de la guerra"
[ie the horrors of the war] (1810)], about a dramatic, universal, anti-war message.
In 1814, ordered by the government, he made paintings: on May 2, 1808 - "Charge of Mamluks at Puerta del Sol" in Madrid
and 3 May 1808 - "The shooting of the Madrid insurgents".
In his country estate, Quinta del Sordo ['deaf house']
created unusual wall compositions, so-called "Pinturas negras" ['black paintings'],
among others the famous painting "Saturn devouring its children".
In 1822 he left Madrid voluntarily, because he could not come to terms
with the rule of Ferdinand VII, and he settled in Bordeaux, France.
Goya's art evolved from the late Baroque forms of religious painting, through
carefree colorful rococo compositions for dark phantasmagories
and almost romantic images of the Madrid insurgents.
Its huge (because it's about 700 pictures, approx. 900 drawings, approx. 300 graphics),
original and diverse achievements influenced many generations of artists:
Romantics, Impressionist, Expressionist and Surrealists,
who in his work saw his own roots.
He died on February 16, 1828 in Bordeaux.
