Today, we keep talking about cycling.
Because traveling by bike is traveling freely.
We can look everywhere around,
stop when you want,
breathe the places we visit,
to approach the people we meet,
meet friends on the side of the road,
meet other cyclist and do travel with them,

make new friends in hostels at the end of the day,

go on toll roads for free,

hear the sounds of nature,
eat a huge meal without feeling guilty to regain burned calories,
see a lot of countries for cheap.
Traveling by bike is the most beautiful to travel, because it allows in addition to
keep fit, to live a unique and unforgettable adventure.
But cycling also has its cons.
Catch sunburn,
get caught in the rain,
exhaust yourself by climbing huge climbs,
follow your GPS to finish lost in the middle of nowhere,
to have the trouble of traveling with big luggage at the airport,
had to go through tunnels while it's forbidden because there is no other choice,
the mechanical maintenance of the bike,
find boxes at the end of the trip to pack the bike,
to be constantly on the lookout for food to fill your reserves,
constantly fight against the wind in your face and so on.

his equipment while traveling by bike.
And frankly, I think that this is the only real inconvenient I can find to travel by bike.
Yes because when you think about it, for the sunburns, just put more sunscreen,
for the rain to have transport waterproof bags,
and for the rest, when you think about it afterall it's just a challenge to face

The only big disadvantage of cyclotouring, is to constantly have to take care of your bike.

With all its weight, it's difficult to go down steps, so imagine going up,

I also don't imagine go in a restaurant with a bike, or in a bathroom,
in a small shop, in a museum, and you will be surprised of the quantity of hotels that refuse them in the rooms.
That time, I was in an youth hostel in a room for four.
When I made the reservation I had asked if I could bring the bike into
my room and I was told that yes no problem.
Once there, I was refused because it could be disturbing for my roommate.
So once the reception was busy, I still brought it to the room
and I put it in a place where I was sure it would not bother anyone.
What makes it difficult with a bike is that it is an object coveted by thieves, who can not get anywhere, and if it gets stolen ...
It's really not cool.
Yes, because doing cyclo-tourism without bike is like ...
It's like brushing your teeth with your fingers.
You look like an idiot and you're not going very far.
And it looks like nothing, but a touring bike in travel mode, it can be very expensive.
I do not really like to talk about prices generally, because it can vary enormously, but for the cause
I will give an example with my material.
Let's say I go into a convenience store five minutes, I leave unattended on the edge of the building a $ 2000 bike,
$ 950 of bags,
$ 500 worth of bike maintenance equipment,
$ 250 of survival equipment,
Bling-bling on my bike like the clip pedals, lights, bottles ... another $ 350
About $ 2200 of clothing for sweaters, coat, socks, boxer, shoes, etc., yes it's going very fast.

$ 200 in miscellaneous,

And now I have to tell all my electronic equipment,

$ 5400 in cameras ...
Yeah, if the pictures are beautiful this is not for nothing.

Not to mention all the material that turns around like batteries, tripod, phone,
GPS watch, universal adapter, power supply, USB key, wiring, earphone, charger, memory card,
we quickly reach another $ 4400.
I had never done the math, it's scary.
In my head I imagined it was about half.
Oh and we must not forget that in North America, we do not count the taxes in the prices we post.
So here we are in Quebec sales tax is 15% so we have to add $ 2860 for our very dear government.
Well, everyone does not travel with equipment to make documentaries but we most
not forget that it's the bike who carries your wallet and your passport.
And that you really do not want to lose that.
It's pretty much the only thing that when I leave my bike, I carry it with me, all the time.
I already lost my wallet in Japan, I really do not want to live that again.

But the problem is that it only attaches my bike, so we just saw that I have a lot more than a bike to protect.

For sure we can forget the code but I think we have less chances to ferget it than to lose the key.
Well for me, I am good at losing keys.

I think the idea is excellent.
But still, at this moment you entrust the value of your bike to a stranger.

A bit like a homeless person, but the journey risk of being a real mess.
The second is to travel with someone.
This solution makes it possible to make commissions at places like in grocery stores
or in convenience store all in security
I've experimented it with Simon in Germany and it was great.
However, at two we must sometimes make concessions.
And do not expect to visit a museum, do climbing a mountain on foot, a
kayak ride in river, eat in a restaurant on a big street corner,
or any activity.
The third solution is the one I use most regularly.
The hotels, motel, hostel and apartments.
And I made a capsule right here if you want to find one for the least expensive possible.
We do not really have any problem when we walk to the middle of nowhere.
It gets messy when you arrive in town, because there are plenty of places to visit and more people to worry about.
So I visit the countries by bike, but the towns on foot.
I leave my bike in my room.
At this place, I feel safe and I can go all around the city, peacefully.
All you have to do is find a place who accepts bikes in the rooms.
In some places it's very easy, others much less.
The cities that gave me the most difficulty was Tokyo and Hiroshima.
In both cases, my bike was refused at least 10 times.
But I still ended up finding a place.
Finally, check your home insurance enclosures.
In my case, all my material, as well as my bike is insured against theft, even
if I find myself with this one in another countries on the other side of the globe.
Call your insurer before you go on a trip to have peace of mind.
Finally, it does not exist to my knowledge a perfect solution.
When you travel by bike, the only real problem is to constantly have to worry about your bike.
It's a frustrating disadvantage, but still, it's not as strong
as all the positive sides of this lifestyle.
