VEGAN BENNIES + WHAT I ATE AT VEGFEST! WIAW #82 | Mary's Test Kitchen - Duration: 9:16.

Hello friends and not-yet-friends,

Welcome back to What I Ate Wednesday, the weekly show where I share all my tasty vegan

eats in a day.

This week is special 'cause 1) it's a weekend edition and 2) because it's what I ate at

Calgary's first Vegan Food and Lifestyle festival!

But first, tea time.

Again, I'm having butterfly pea flower tea with pandan leaves and lemongrass.

I just love watching it steep.

It's relaxing, soothing.

And then it looks like kool-aid.

But it taste mores like chamomile tea.

And you guys have seen it turn purple with lemon juice before.

It doesn't even need that lemon flavour but it turns purple so how could I resist?

On Saturday mornings, over the past...oh,... a couple months, I've been working on bennies.

Not super serious like, just doing bennies different ways for funsies.

On this morning, it started with tofu.

This type of tofu is my favourite for making bennies.

It's a medium firm kind of tofu; this brand calls it Traditional style.

After you drain the water, cut a block into four even slices.

Then, so they will fit nicely on english muffins, I use a mason jar ring to cut rounds.

Those go ever so gently into salted cold water, and I'll turn up the heat so it comes to a

simmer.

At the same time, I'll set my container of cheater hollandaise in there to get warm too.

It's a cheater recipe because it's just vegan mayo, lemon juice, water, onion powder, and

a little dill and parsley, mixed together.

I feel like a real proper vegan hollandaise should involve a little more.

And possibly have a bit more colour.

The simmer should be gentle but not too gentle.

Because I want that salted water bubbling into the crevices and throughout the tofu.

This makes it less beany tasting, though this tofu is already quite mild, and gets it a

bit salted.

Then, time for seitan.

Not the lord of darkness, but wheat meat.

Made out of pure gluten.

Which, for you celiac sufferers out there, might as well BE the lord of darkness for

what it does to your guts.

Lucky for me and my man, our guts seem to love gluten.

And we thank the monks who invented it centuries ago.

Or I do, anyway.

I'm sorry there's no recipe for these strips YET.

Because I didn't write anything down.

I thought I was going to be able to remember what I put in and write it down later but

I just can't really remember.

Maybe I should've had coffee.

They came out a bit puffy but crispy on the outside and delicious but...not yet recipe

video worthy anyways, if you know what I mean.

But I'll keep working on it...and one day, we shall have the ultimate seitan bacon.

Those went directly on to toasted sourdough english muffins, which are vegan.

I haven't seen english muffins that aren't vegan but when in doubt, check the ingredients!

Then very gently, very carefully, slide on our tofu.

I add a little sprinkly of black salt for that egg-like aroma.

Just a little goes a long way.

And then, my cheater hollandaise.

And a little extra black salt on top, a little pepper

and chili flakes just cause I love them.

More parsley just for looks and these are pretty bomb vegan bennies.

The tofu really stands in well; reminds me of egg whites.

The seitan adds the salty meatiness and the cheater hollandaise sauce is just right.

Speaking of just right, the weather was amazing for VegFest!

We got there around 1 and it was so busy!

They estimate ten thousand people were in attendance.

This is a city nicknamed cowtown for it's ranching origins.

Cowboy culture is still big here, so is the enthusiasm for meat, rodeos, and the like.

But I see a lot of openness to something different too.

We have a number of animal sanctuaries and passionate animal activists.

Not to mention those who are very keen on the diet aspect.

I was pretty keen on the diet aspect of this festival.

Namely the vegan junk food.

Heart's Choices Veggie Truck was by far the most popular food truck.

After lining up at another place and them selling out of all the good stuff, just as

we got to the front, we couln't take the hunger or any more wait so we took the train to another

veg place we knew nearby.

Veg in.

Pretty much everything they serve has a vegan option if it's not already vegan.

The smashed potato samosa I had was really tasty.

It's got their own special sauce which I think is supposed to be like vegan butter chicken

sauce, plus tamarind and the longest onions I've ever seen.

Kim got a similar thing but with masala chickpeas,

and Connor got the Veg In classic burger.

It's this monsterous thing in a super healthy looking bun.

He really liked it.

Healthy kids, I tell ya.

Before we hopped on the train back to vegfest, we also grabbed these vegan cheesecakes from

their freezer.

It was still fairly busy, weather was still perfect.

Perfect for taking in live music by local vegan Metis musician, Riel.

*music*

Part way through the performance, I ran over to the cooking demo stage to see Rose AKA

CheapLazyVegan.

I was trying to be incognito right.

[Rose: Um yea...

Hi Mary!

Me: Hi!

Rose: *laughs*]

So much for incognito.

[Rose: Are you vloggin?

Me: Yeaah...

Rose: Check out Mary's Test Kitchen.

She's on YouTube and Instagram.

Me: aw shucks

Rose: We had pho together.

She's great.

Oh my god, and I forgot my waller so she paid for me.

Audience: *laughs*

Rose: I swear, I wasn't being cheap.]

Also, I got asked for a selfie for the first time in my life.

I was so off guard, I stuck out my tongue and gave her bunny ears, so to that person,

it was awesome to meet you, you were so nice, and sorry I might have been weird.

A moment of silence for my dignity.

Then I rushed off to catch the last part of Riel's performance and met this bear disguised

as a dog.

VegFest was such a enormous success and all thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers.

Bravo to them!

And the sponsors too; not all of them vegan but enthusiasic about the cause nonetheless.

After all that excitment, I was pretty tired.

But I was prepared for being tired and had Vegan Richa's vegan butter chicken AKA seitan

makhani in the fridge.

It's one of my favourite curry dishes to have.

Speaking of favourites, I'll be sharing a childhood favourite, Chinese BBQ Pork Buns,

vegan of course, for this weekend's recipe video and for my first ever YouTube collab

which will be with another Canadian YouTuber: Lisa from The Viet Vegan.

She's Viet and she's vegan and she's going to share an amazing vegan lemongrass beef

bahn mi recipe that I cannot wait to try myself.

If you love Vietnamese food like I do, you're gonna wanna watch that.

Speaking of which, did you like this video?

Please give it a thumbs up if you did and share it on facebook, twitter, reddit, tumblr

or where ever you hang out online.

It really helps me out when you do.

And let's show everyone how easy and delicious vegan food can be.

Thank you very much for watching.

Bye for now!

PHONE GRIP REVIEW - Phone Loop Better Than a POPSOCKET?! - Ninja Loop Review - Duration: 6:34.

Today I'm going to be talking about phoneloops.com Ninja Loops. This was given to me by my friend

Zak Tech Reviews, he did a video on them compared to PopSockets, which I usually do because

you guys know PopSockets ARE my favorite phone grip. But, I thought I would go ahead and

give these a try. My dog is walking around in here, so you hear ... his paws. These are

Ninja Loops. They're for your phone. So that you can grip your phone really easily. I already

opened this one so I am just sliding it out. Looks pretty easy to use it's just a string

for the most part. I thought it was gonna be elastic, and I'm kinda surprised that it's

not elastic. And then it has two 3M tape pieces on the end, so that's where it's going to

secure to our phone case. So here's the phone case, I brought two different phone cases,

just in case. And we got one with a lip on it, which I was a little bit concerned about

and then, this is one of my favorite cases it's so slim and nice and I can never pronounce

this company but it's Pitaka, I'll leave all this below in case you are interested. But,

I'm gonna test it out on this case and if it's not gonna work we'll go with this one.

Stick inside a clean and sturdy case. Ok. Put the loop through the opening, what? Alright,

what? Hmm? Okay. hmm so, we're going to stick the loop through the camera opening, apparently.

Like that? huh. Okay. And then through the bottom. But where? Oh, you should put it kinda

opposite of one another as far as I can see here because, really? That doesn't look right.

Let's try it here. I don't like it opposite. I guess you kinda do hahah, I guess you kinda

do have to do it opposite because otherwise it's not gonna really have much leverage there.

So I guess it's going to be doing this number. Ok. Let's secure it to my case. I guess it

is gonna work on this one. Apply. And now I'm a little bit concerned because I wanna

make sure my grip that's not even that sturdy. That doesn't feel sturdy to me. That's weird,

that's as tight as I can get it, really. Okay. That might be the size that they make, are

these one size fits all? Let me just see. Just want to make sure you guys know. I don't

see different sizes. So, okay I've secured my phone loop. Ohh, oopsy, haha made it a

little too tight that time but actually, it's, seems pretty good. That seems decent. So now

I'm gonna put my case on my phone. Why do I feel like it's not working? Ohh, what? Oh!

That's probably why. If you could see my outtakes you'd know JUST how stupid I am and you may

even subscribe to my channel. Just because you have pity on me. Ok, so I'm gonna go ahead

and put my phone in my case without my other case on my phone, cause that makes sense.

And... I honestly it doesn't feel as secure in my case. But it's not.. wait. Actually,

yeah it's not gonna lay flat because of the string. So, that's a cause for concern. The

other thing I have noticed is let me try to text with this, ohh I can't even move my fingers

so I have to tell you I'm not loving it. Ahh, Texting with this to be honest with you I

do voice to text a lot, but if I was texting um, It's not my favorite. I just, that's just

my point of view. I I, don't like it. But ya know what, ok. To each their own, you may

like this, you may think this is really good. I think some of the good things about it,

is that you could stick this into your pocket or your purse without anything rubbing against

it or causing any tension or friction so that would be a good thing right? So one thing

that's a little bit cause for concern is the fact that where do you secure this to your

car? I don't know. I'm not really sure. But, it does the job. If you need something pretty

cheap to put on your phone and they do offer different colors then this might be an option

for you. I think it takes away from the design of my phone, a little bit. My phone's just

not as secure inside of it's case because the fact that, like look how easy that comes

out because the fact that this is in the inner side. I dunno. I'm not happy about that because

really my phone is not in the right position. So, that's not the best. Let's take a look

at it up close so you guys can get the full, um whatever you call

it of this thing. It's decent. I just don't feel like this is good for the fact that it's

bringing my phone out of my case. So tell me what you guys think. Is this something

you would use? And, tell me if you think it will work for your phone, I think that it

is okay, it does the job but like I said it's not my favorite phone grip.

English Grammar: Correlative Conjunctions (NEITHER & NOR, EITHER & OR, BOTH & AND...) - Duration: 11:56.

Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.

Ex my...

"Neither you nor your hairy-ass friend can come to my party!"

E! That's so rude.

Hi. James from engVid.

Today's lesson is going to be on correlative conjunctions, or let's say conjunctive pairs

to make it simple.

Mr. E made a statement where he said two things using two words to bring two statements together,

two related ideas and brought them together.

In this case: "you" and "your hairy-ass friend".

I want to go to the board and I want to explain the correlative conjunctions to you, because

I know conjunctions you've heard of, but this will be a little twist that can add to your

English to make it more advanced. Are you ready?

Let's go to the board.

All right, so E talked about correlative conjunctions, and what I want to do is just go over conjunctions

basically to you. Okay?

So, conjunctions like: "for", "so", "because", "and", and "or" are easy.

You know, they're everyday words.

You say them regularly.

"My friend and I", "You", or "Him", or "Her". Right?

And we use these to join words, clauses, and phrases together. Right?

"The people I saw and my best friends were happy."

Okay?

So, a correlative conjunction is the same kind of thing as, like, your joining statements,

but they're of... Sorry.

"Of", not "or".

Of related information.

And when they come together...

When I say pairs, it's like imagine a boy and a girl together and they're a happy couple,

they work together.

Okay?

So, "either", "or" is one of the first examples.

You've seen "either". Right?

Or you've seen "or", but what I want to talk about is "either", "or".

In "either", "or" it gives you a choice.

"Either you pay me the money now or I break your legs."

You have a choice; whether you like that choice or not, it's a choice.

The second one is also...

Is: "not only", "but also".

It's about surprise.

In the first case we're saying: "Not only was she happy"-there was a surprise-

"but she also got married", there's even more surprise.

So, in this correlative pair we talk about the idea of surprise.

You put this plus this, there's a surprise, plus more surprise.

In our third case we talk about negation.

That's what I was talking about, Mr. E here said: "Not you, nor your friend".

A lot of students have a problem with "neither", "nor" or "neither", "nor".

By the way, they're the same thing.

You'll hear people say: "Neither this" or "nor".

My idea on that or my take on that is this: A lot of educated people will say: "Neither",

and it's more British.

And Americans tend to say: "Neither" more.

Is there really a grammatical difference?

Not at all, but just keep that in mind that if you hear someone say: "Neither" they probably

have gone to university, a little bit more educated, and "neither" is just more commonplace.

It's not better, it's not worse, it's just a preference in style. Okay?

But when you say "neither"...

"Neither", "nor", it means not this and not that.

It's not a choice.

People confuse "either", "or" because you have a choice.

This means: This is not true and that's not true, so both are not true anymore.

Cool? Keep that in mind.

It makes everything negative.

And finally: "both", "and" is inclusive or including.

You know: "Both my brother and my father love baseball."

So I'm taking two, right?

"Both", my brother, I am saying there are two parts, and the secondary part is included

with the first part, so it's an including. Cool?

Now, we've got the basic lesson down.

We're going to go to the board, of course you know I'm going to give you a bit of a quiz.

I hope you understand.

I'll go over it quickly for you once again just in case.

"Either", "or" is choice; "not only", "but also" is surprise and it's two surprises,

the first case is a surprise, the second one is even more of a surprise; "neither", "nor"

is negation, meaning no, x, nothing, no; and "both", "and" is included, so you're including

this with that, both she and he were happy. Right? Cool?

All right, so once again we're going to do our magic board.

Got to do a little bit of a quiz, and I'll give you a little bit extra on conjunctions

in just a second.

[Snaps]

Okay, so you'll remember we were talking about, you know, correlative conjunctions, and what

I want you to do just before I got to the quiz, because I said we were doing a quiz

-which is true-I want to show you how they work in sentences

because I explained it to you, but

I think one picture is worth a thousand words, so we're going to do, well, four pictures.

Okay?

So, here are some conjunction examples.

Four markers to make it clear, okay?

So: "They told me to either buy the shoes or put them back."

So in this case you can see the choice, you can buy or put them back, but you have to

do one or the other.

Okay? And that's what the "either" is indicating here.

"Either buy this one or put them back."

That is your choice.

Okay?

Let's do the next one: "Not only did it smell", okay just to let you know, when you say something

smells in English, it's not usually positive.

We talk about a scent, someone has a pleasant scent, not a pleasant smell.

Okay?

So: "Not only did it smell", that's my first part, it's like: "It smelled. I didn't expect it to smell".

"...but it also tasted funny".

So, I'd give you an example of a hamburger.

I expect a hamburger to taste a certain way, but if the hamburger had a smell I'd be surprised.

It shouldn't smell like fish, but then it tasted funny.

It tasted like, I don't know, licorice.

Not only was I surprised the first time.

Remember I told you?

The second one indicates even a greater surprise.

Something looked a certain way, but tasted or felt a different way.

Okay?

So here we're looking at surprise and I'm showing you how these show surprise and greater surprise.

Let's look at number three, okay?

"The dog neither ate nor slept at night."

So, it neither ate...

Okay? So it didn't eat.

But I'm not even just saying it didn't eat, I'm also going to say it didn't sleep.

So, instead of...

And let's go back to number one where you have a choice of buying it or putting away.

In this case you don't get to eat and you don't get to sleep, neither thing is true.

You don't get to do either one, and that's why it's a negation.

Okay?

Both are taken away from you.

Here you're offered a choice, here you show surprise, but in this one you get nothing;

you don't get this and you don't get that.

Now, finally we have: "Mr. E was both funny and modest about his adventures."

Well, we're saying the two are together.

In this case he was funny and...

If I'm going to go back to, don't tell anybody, but we'll go back to a simple conjunction

"and" because you know "and" means both things are truth.

This is just saying here the inclusion is both, meaning two things.

So it's telling you right at the beginning there are two things that are true; one is

being funny, the other is being modest, and we're including them together to make it a

stronger statement.

So instead of just saying: "He was funny and this", we're saying:

"He was both funny and modest", stronger statement and it's inclusive or including.

Do you like that?

Cool.

Now we've gone through all four sentences, I'm going to test your knowledge because you

have examples of it, you know what it means - let's see how well you do on the quiz.

Let's start with number one.

"Not only"... Oops, sorry.

"Not only was it"...

Sorry.

"Not only was it of great quality but it was also cheap."

Would it be A, B, C, or D?

Okay.

Before I put it on the board, let's go to number two.

"Both the man and his dog were stupid."

Sorry.

I don't know where that came from, but I liked it so I wrote it down.

"Both the man and his dog were stupid."

Okay?

So I want...

Once again I'm going to step back, I want you to take a look at your choices and figure out which...

Where it goes. Okay?

Okay, number three: "Neither the woman nor the man were happy with the answer."

Once again, which one do you think would be the correct one?

Inclusion, choice, negation, or surprise?

And finally, we have this one: "Either you watch the program or we turn off the television."

Okay, so you've had time to think about it.

Let's go to the answers and see which one it would be.

Now, number one was: "Not only was it of great quality but it was also cheap."

That sounds like a surprise, right?

"Not only was it of great quality but it was also cheap", so that one goes here.

D1 is here.

Surprise, I was surprised at the quality and the cost.

Right?

Now let's look at...

Take a look at number two: "Both the man and his dog were stupid."

I know it's a bad sentence, but I just kind of like it.

Okay.

Both.

Well, it seems I'm including the man and his dog together, right?

That would be inclusion. Right?

So, inclusion, so we're going to go here with number 2.

Inclusion or included.

How about this one: "Neither the woman nor the man were happy with the answer"?

So not this one and not that one, I think that would be...

What do you think that would be?

Yeah, I made that one easy, here we go, 3, negation. Right?

Both of them were not happy.

And finally, we know the answer is choice, let's go down to number four:

"Either you watch the program or we turn off the television."

All right?

Number 4.

And there we have our answers.

How did you do?

Did you get all four correct?

If not, we should go back...

Go back to the beginning, watch the explanation, and then look at the example sentences

I have over here-right?-to make sure you understand properly.

Now, time for me to get going.

I've got a bit of pairing to do myself.

Do you know what I mean? [Clicks tongue].

Okay, anyway, before I go I just want to say: Thank you very much for watching the video.

Please go to engVid, because if you know, when you go to engVid you'll notice that I

actually did another video on comma girl and I think it was...

Comma girl and conjunction boy, so that's, you know, in greater detail on that.

Anyway, and we have...

Also have other information from other teachers doing the same thing.

But I want to say thank you once again, and I'm going to say go to www.engvid.com,

where you can see my video and other ones, and don't forget to subscribe;

push that button, press that screen, whatever you've got to do.

All right?

Have a good one.

Why Shuttling MTB Trails can be controversial - Duration: 7:17.

On Sunday we drove all the way to Bailey mountain bike park, only to find out they were filled

up.

Yes Bailey has a maximum occupancy.

I bought a pass online beforehand, but forgot to click the thing with the date and… yeah,

so there we were with our full face helmets, no water bottles, and every intention to ride

park.

What to do?

Devil: You could shuttle bennet gap easily.

It'll be awesome.

Angel: Climbing makes the descent more satisfying!

Don't you want to earn it?

Devil: You need to STS.

Shuttle that shit.

A shuttle can be any kind of motorized transportation from town to a trail, but that's not the

kind of shuttle I'm talking about.

I'm talking about "shuttling" a trail.

You know… driving to the top on some nearby access road, enjoying a free ride to the bottom,

and then using another car to drive back up and retrieve the shuttle vehicle.

Sure you lose out on the climb and the feeling of accomplishment, but c'mon.

You get a sweet descent and instant gratification.

It's tempting.

But let's say you're pedaling that fire road to earn your descent.

Every time someone shuttles it they drive past you 4 times, twice with the shuttle vehicle

and twice with the other.

As you breathe in the dust and watch a tailgate full of bikes recede into the distance, you

could care less about how much fun they're having.

In fact you may even call them shuttlecocks.

But traffic on the access roads is not the only issue.

A tough climb is a limiting factor of who can and will ride a trail.

Shuttling can open a trail to more skill and fitness levels, creating more erosion, braking

holes, and drainage issues.

While these are legitimate concerns, you'll find varying attitudes towards shuttling depending

on where you go.

It depends on the trail and the community.

Of course if a trail is shuttleable, some riders will decide to STS.

In those cases, here's how to not be a dick about it.

1.

First of all, consider shuttling a treat and don't make it a habit

2.

Keep it low key and remember that you're not at a downhill park

3.

You can also time your shuttles according to traffic.

In other words, don't do it on Saturday morning when there are tons of people pedaling

the access roads.

4.

Also, consider pitching in.

Public trails don't always have paid maintenance crews like private downhill parks do.

Pick up garbage when you see it, and drag any debris off trail to make way for those

pedaling behind you.

Angel: So, are you ready to earn your descent?

Devil: Nope, he's gonna STS

I'm gonna STS.

And it was settled.

Bobo and I set out to find a willing recruit.

We picked up Gus from Squatch bikes, and made our way out to Pisgah.

We then parked Gus's car near the end of the trail so we could use it to retrieve our

shuttle vehicle.

We drove up the gravel road with our bikes, which was about 3.5 miles.

On that day we didn't encounter anyone climbing it, and I could see why.

The road was kind of treacherous and moderately trafficked.

Of course this discourages people from pedaling it which just leads to more shuttling and

more vehicle traffic.

I'm not really suggesting a solution to this, but it's good to be aware of these

factors.

Nevertheless, we arrived at the trail to enjoy our free descent—hoping that we wouldn't

cause the trail gods to become angry.

I could almost hear them taunting us.

""Shuttlecocks""

The anxiety faded away real quick.

Bennet gap is absolutely beautiful.

In the spring, these Rhododendrons form tunnels of flowers, also known as Rodotunnels.

In the winter, you get nice views through the trees and there are vistas to stop at

year round.

""shuttlecocks""

The trail is also as gnarly as it is beautiful.

That day I got some help from Gus, who knows the lines better than anyone.

If you ever get the opportunity to follow a pro racer, pay close attention.

You will absolutely learn something.

It's important to note that Gus didn't get this fast by shuttling.

When things level out or turn into a climb, he doesn't slow down a bit.

When you pay the trail gods with a climb, they give you the gift of strength.

Shuttlecocks!

Those trail gods were determined to collect their fee.

We forged ahead.

Shuttlecoooocks.

And the mission was a success.

We pedaled a short way back to the car, glowing with exhilaration from our descent.

All we needed to do was drive to the top to get our shuttle car.

Wait.

Thanks for riding with me today, and I'll see you next time.
