we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord.
The Magi were guided by the light of God's star
to the newborn king.
We now open ourselves to God's light,
guiding us to encounter God's mercy and love
during this liturgy.
My brothers and sisters,
let us pause and now prepare ourselves
to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

Your light has come,
the glory of the Lord shines upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth,

and over you, appears his glory.
Nations shall walk by your light,
and kings by your shining radiance.
Raise your eyes and look about;
they all gather and come to you:
your sons come from afar,
and your daughters in the arms of their nurses.
Then you shall be radiant at what you see,
your heart shall throb and overflow,
for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you,
the wealth of nations shall be brought to you.
Caravans of camels shall fill you,
dromedaries from Midian and Ephah;
all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense,

- [Congregation] Glory to you, O Lord.
- When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,
in the days of King Herod,
behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
"Where is the newborn king of the Jews?
"We saw his star at its rising
"and have come to do him homage."
When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled,
and all Jerusalem with him.
Assembling all the chief priests
and the scribes of the people,
He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea,
"for thus it has been written through the prophet:
"And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
"are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
"since from you shall come a ruler,
"who is to shepherd my people Israel."
Then Herod called the Magi secretly
and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance.
He sent them to Bethlehem and said,
"Go and search diligently for the child.
"When you have found him, bring me word,
"that I too may go and do him homage."
After their audience with the king, they were sent out.
And behold, the star that they had seen
at the rising preceded them,
until it came and stopped over the place
where the child was.
They were overjoyed at seeing the star,
and on entering the house,
they saw the child with Mary, his mother.
They prostrated themselves and did him homage.
Then they opened their treasures,
offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
they departed for their country by another way.
The gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] We give praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- As they visited
the Christ child at the house of Mary and Joseph,
it's a long tradition too,
to bless our homes during Epiphany.
At the parish, we give chalk
and a little prayer that goes along with it,
that we can bless the lintels of the house.
It's a long-standing tradition to do that,
and we remember that we have Calthazar,
Caspar, Balthazar, Melchior, C-B-M,
in the year of our Lord, in the new year, 2019.
And it's a tradition to do this on this day.
And that we bless all who enter into this community,
that God has come to us in various ways,
and through various cultures and peoples and generations.
You see, that's because Epiphany is the manifestation
of Christ to the Gentiles,
not just Israel, but to all God's people.
The Magi themselves, coming to pay homage to a newborn king,
that's also an epiphany, it's a revelation.
It gave us sudden insight
into the deeper meaning of the messiah.
That the messiah would be born in a manger in such a way.
Today, we celebrate the life of God himself.
The God and the person of Jesus Christ,
who, both human and divine, shares our humanity.
We believe we know Jesus
and that he has revealed himself to us
in word and sacrament as we prayed throughout Advent.
God reveals himself through sacramental grace,
through his word.
See, God is always guiding us, like the star,
along the journey of life in this earthly kingdom.
But that doesn't mean the journey is easy.
Saint Matthew tells us that the Magi was so overjoyed
when they saw the star again,
after their meeting with Herod.
So, you see, at some point in their journey,
for some reason, maybe they lost sight of the star,
it disappeared.
If they had turned back at that point,
they would never have found what they longed for.
I think we, too, can be in similar situations at times
in our spiritual journey.
We know God is faithful and we want to trust him,
but we, too, can lose sight of the star.
That's when we have to exercise our faith in God.
To keep following the star,
to keep following the light of Christ.
Maybe we are drifting away from the light.
Maybe there's a specific situation,
and today we're reminded that God is faithful
and by following Him, we enlightened our journey.
We can count on Jesus,
and it's worth following the star.
The three Magi needed a little help
understanding the prophecy to move forward.
God has also blessed us with the church,
with word and sacrament,
to help us understand the journey for ourselves.
Through his word and his church, Jesus is our guiding star.
The light of the world that will always bring the place God,
to bring us to the place where God wants us to be.
And like the journey of the Magi,
each of our journeys has a direction,
that all the roads lead to eternal life,
eternal life in the kingdom.
Jesus gives himself to us today in Eucharist,
a gift so wonderful,
the Magi could never have even conceived of it.
