hey folks welcome to Ask Liebs, I'm Lieberman and today we have an email
from a Lieberfriend. a big thank you to everybody who's commented, who sent me
emails, who's reached out and said hey thank you for bringing the show back. now
we do have seven episodes left of Ask Liebs Mondays and Thursdays at noon
pacific standard time. let's jump right into that email. it's short but sweet but
there's a lot of meat on this bone. can I say bone? I can say bone. Dear Matt how do you
achieve your dream slash passion and make time for it because it's hard to
balance out life? well Lieberfriend you are absolutely right. it is very very
difficult to balance out life. now without any kind of additional context
about what your dream or passion is, it's a little difficult for me to give you
specialized advice but I do think that I have a lot to say about balance and
about achievement. different roads, different avenues, different passions
require different levels of commitment. if your dream is particularly hard to
pull off you're going to have to give that much more of your life to it to
achieve it. if you aren't able to support that,
then it may be something that isn't quite achievable and you have to revisit
often to see where is my level of commitment at? how much can I offer to
myself? if your dream is to achieve something that requires a large high
level of commitment like becoming a lawyer becoming a doctor becoming a
professor becoming an actor or a director or some sort of specialized
skill, you're going to need to offer a lot of commitment to that dream. it's the
reason why it's a cliche that when someone goes to law school or medical
school. it's just completely swallows up their life, because that's
what's needed to pull it off. you need to pull off hours and hours of research and
training to get a degree. same thing to become an actor or a director or
comedian. any skill requires a great deal of time dedicated to it to grow and
become halfway decent at. like even me, right? even before my earliest videos,
even if you go back before I was doing podcasts, I was doing
stand up, and terribly I might add, at age eighteen. I was doing stand-up and
sucking at it for years but that training of getting up in front of
people and trying to entertain them and coming up with material and when you
don't have material just talking to people in the audience, those hours and
hours of work eventually paid off and now I can sit down in front of a camera
and I know to have a certain level of energy. I know to have a certain level of
presentation. I know to enunciate when I speak. I know what's entertaining and
what's not. all of that came from the level of commitment I was able to put
into my dream back when I was younger. now that I'm a bit older, it's a little
different right? like I'm trying to achieve my dreams professionally so I do
need to contribute a great deal of time to it. as much time as someone would
contribute to their full-time job, that's the amount of time that I'm spending on
getting more clients for my consulting business, on training in voiceover so that
when my auditions come in I'm able to do a great job. when those auditions come in
kicking ass at those. and then the rest of my time
is honestly spent taking care of my family and my home and my animals. I
feel that since I left SourceFed I have been able to achieve a level of balance
that I wasn't able to when I had a full-time job. I'm lucky enough that
myself and my partner are able to make enough money doing the things that we
love to do to support our family. like we are in a unique position and it's
because we put a high level of commitment into achieving our goals,
becoming very good at our skills. the first thing you got to take care of is
make sure you have enough money to pay the bills to clothe yourself, feed
yourself, have a roof over your head. that's just pragmatism. then beyond that,
how much time are you able to give over to the thing you want to do? to learn? to
train, to try, to practice, to create. that's your big question. if it
matters enough to you you will be willing to shift the balance in the
direction of your dream and away from having a work-life balance. it's easier I
think when you're younger to be able to do that just because you have more
energy and you have less responsibilities. the older I get, the
more responsibilities I have, the more animals I have, the more
responsibilities I have so it's a little harder. and then also I want to be able
to enjoy my life now that I have a partner. back when I was single
it was a lot easier to just spend hours and hours editing videos cuz I had
nothing better to do. yeah I could go out with friends or you know I could go to
karaoke or I could go see movies or I could stream stuff on Netflix but I
wanted something more than I wanted those things. now having said that you
speak of achieving a passion or a dream. achievement and participation are two
different things. if you want to achieve, if you want to be able to make a living
off of that dream, or you want to become a notable figure in that world, or you
want to simply become a a masterful artisan at whatever that dream or
passion is, that's different from I just want to be able to do the thing. like I
don't need to be the world's greatest comedian I just want to do comedy. I
don't need to be the world's most respected actor, I just want to have the
opportunity to act. I don't want to become a licensed surgeon but I do want to
learn everything that I can about the practice because I'm fascinated with it.
these are two things two very different things and to participate versus to
achieve requires a very different level. now if you just love a thing or love a
world, love a field, love a skill, you can participate in it and still have a very
full balanced life. to achieve it requires more commitment. your life
shouldn't just be about the work or about achievement, you should be able to
make room in your life to make memories and to have fun. to celebrate things. I
think that you have to make your job your dream or your passion your priority
until you get some momentum, but like I have you need to find that time
to like ease off the gas and put the brake on so that you can have more going
on in your life than just the thing. just because my background is in comedy its
easiest to go to comedy...when people do a lot of improv and all they do is
improv, their scenes just become about nothing because they have no life
experience. they're not going out and doing things and experiencing the world
and meeting people, which is what informs their art! you shouldn't just be doing
the thing, but it should be your priority until you feel like you're in a position
to let some of it go. where you're ahead maybe you've got that the green. if
you've got that job and you've got that second job or that promotion you don't
have to work quite as hard. so in conclusion only you can decide
what is the right balance for you and and how much life you need to balance
out that work and only you can figure out whether or not you are able to
handle the commitment that your dream your passion requires for it to be an
achievement, versus something you participate in, because if you cannot
offer that level of commitment it's never going to be your job. it's going to
be at most a hobby. now I don't think that hobby is a dirty word or a bad word.
people who have very full lives have really cool hobbies. but it's not going
to be the key factor in your lifestyle because you're not able to contribute
enough energy and commitment and time into it for it to grow into that thing.
and I would also argue that it's an easier and and sometimes more
better like for your dreams to be hobbies instead of achievements.
participation instead of work. it's a really hard, extreme life to commit all
of your time to a thing. to master it and become great. people just want to enjoy
their life and that's cool. I think if you're writing this email it's because
you want something a little harder than that and hey I applaud you for it but
you have to decide what you're willing to put up with and no one else can make
that decision for you. I hope that helps. so folks that's it for today I hope that
you got a lot out of this video. let me know down in the comments below what you
