Why Improving Your English Accent And Pronunciation Is So Important - Duration: 7:15.
Hi everyone! I'm Abbe from MosaLingua.
Today, let's talk about speaking and in particular your accent.
In today's video, you'll discover the truth about your
English accent and pronunciation. Watch this video until the end because
I'll give you some keys for quickly improving your spoken English.
When it comes to accents, there are two main attitudes among English learners.
First you have those who say:
"but if I have a cute foreign accent
native speakers might find me attractive or be more forgiving of my mistakes".
These people also might be convinced that maybe their accent isn't so bad after all;
Then you have those who refuse to speak at all because they think that
their accent is so bad that people will not understand them or that they will
look ridiculous for even trying. Take it from me: both extremes are wrong.
It's perfectly okay to have a bit of a foreign accent when speaking English.
The majority of English learners do keep their accent and it's true that a little
bit of an accent can be quite charming. But I really do mean a "light accent".
Many people out there unfortunately have a very strong accent that makes it
difficult for native speakers to understand them.
I myself have learned French and at the beginning I had a lot of difficulty
improving my accent so I know how you feel. But going back to English let me
explain why you really should work on your accent and pronunciation.
First and most importantly: if you want to be understood, it's important to have a good accent
it can be uncomfortable for both people in a conversation when the
message just isn't getting through. You may have already experienced this, either
as the person who doesn't understand or as the person who is being misunderstood.
So even if you have a limited vocabulary and are unable to rephrase something
if you learn how to pronounce a few things perfectly, there won't be any
miscommunication. Again, having a slight foreign accent can be cute or exotic but
only to a certain degree and only as long as it does not interfere with communication.
Bad pronunciation can also lead to some embarrassing mistakes.
I can't tell you how many times my foreign students have accidentally said "turd"
(which is a way to say poop in English) instead of "third". Other common mistakes
in English pronunciation that can sometimes be very embarrassing include
the words: Beach, focus, sheet, sock and us. And I'll let you guess what those words
sounded like. Those are a few English examples but these types of
pronunciation mistakes can happen in any language. Next, working on a really good
accent is the easiest way to appear more fluent than you actually are.
Again you might not have a very big vocabulary or only know very basic
grammar rules but if you can pronounce a few very simple sentences very well you
will make a positive impression on the person you are speaking to. You will also
see more fluent than someone who has tons of vocabulary words and knows very
complex sentence structures but pronounces them with a terrible accent.
Let me stress this because it's very important: working on your pronunciation
is the fastest way to improve your spoken English. The targeted work on some
of the most commonly mispronounced sounds can make a huge difference.
Let me add one more reason: not only will a good accent impact the way other people view you,
it can also positively influence your perception of language learning.
If people don't understand you because of your pronunciation,
even if you are saying a perfectly correct sentence, you might get
discouraged or even start to resent the language. This is of course bad for
motivation. If you're proud of your accent though, you'll be more confident.
If you're more confident, you'll be more likely to practice speaking the language.
The more you practice, the better you'll be,
and the more progress you're able to see the prouder you'll be. See how this can
turn into a positive cycle? So to sum up, improving your accent and pronunciation
is very important for four main reasons: 1. to be understood more easily by native speakers
2. to avoid embarrassing mistakes 3. to make a positive impression when you
speak English and 4. to improve your self-confidence and motivation and be
proud when you speak. I hope that's enough to convince you of the importance
of working on your accent and improving your pronunciation. Now you might be
thinking "okay this is all really nice but how can I actually improve my accent
and pronunciation?" First of all, when you learn a new word, make sure you pay
attention to how a native speaker pronounces it and try to reproduce that
same pronunciation. This is why when you learn a new word or sentence using your

pronounce the word or sentence and repeating after them to try to get the
correct pronunciation. This way you can compare your recording to the teachers
recording. Don't be afraid to keep recording until you get it right!
This way you'll learn the correct pronunciation from the very beginning

up later on. Another way to drastically improve your pronunciation is to focus
on the sounds that are most commonly mispronounced by speakers of your native
language. For example, Spanish and Japanese speakers don't always struggle
with the same English sounds because some of them are more
familiar to them than others. Believe me, a targeted work on a small group of

Today, in this video, we're going to go to Vietnam and we're going to visit a farm of
Basa.
You know Basa is one of these catfish from Asia that is sold everywhere in the world.
That's one of the most farmed fish.
So today we go and we visit the fish farm in Vietnam that's a really big fish farm and
that's a special fish farm that is sustainably certified.

Today we are in Vietnam in the Mekong Delta visiting a Basa farm, and this farm is a bit
special because it's certified ASC and GLOBALG.A.P., which means Aquaculture Stewardship Council
and Global Good Aquaculture Practice which is actually two certifications of sustainability.
So here we got 11 ponds, really big ponds.
You can see at the back.
And they are really full of Basa, which is a fish that is sold everywhere in the world.
And sorry.
I wearing some glasses because the sun is very strong here so I have to keep those glasses.
Otherwise, I would not be able to make this video correctly.
So here we can see some kind of floats or boats where we got some fish food prepared
to feed.
Oh excellent.
Can we go in?
Lady: Yeah.
Jonathan: Excellent and how many fish do we have in those ponds?
Lady: It's about 700 tons.
Jonathan: 700 tons per pond?
In this pond, we got 700 tons of fish.
Wow!
That's crazy.
And so we got 700 tons of fish and then when you grow to which size?
You grow them to which size?
To 1 kilo?
Before you harvest them?
Lady: Usually, I keep until the suitable size for production.
Jonathan: Oh, for the production, yeah.
Lady: And then we harvest.
Jonathan: Yeah, and so what is a suitable size for production, approximately?
Lady: It depends on the contracts.
Jonathan: On the contracts, yeah?
So it goes from what?
500 grams to 2 kilos?
Lady: Yeah.
Jonathan: Approximately?
So when those fish reach the maximum size, what is going to be the maximum quantity of
fish you will have here?
Lady: It's maximum about 850 when we will harvest.
Now, don't keep until 1 kilo.
Jonathan: How much food has been thrown in the water right now?
What is the quantity of food?
Lady: They feed twice a day.
Jonathan: Twice a day?
Yeah?
Lady: And each time it's about 5 tons.
Jonathan: 5 tons?
So 10 tons a day.
Wow!
Okay.
700 tons?
And they feed 10 tons.
Okay.
Wow!
That's impressive.
And so they're going to harvest them soon as you say.
They're going to harvest 70 tons per day of fish.
Right?
Lady: Yes.
Jonathan: So Basa is a fish that is sold everywhere in the world because the flesh is really white.
It doesn't have a very strong flavor, and it's very cheap, as well.
So it can be sold to anyone, any market, and there is a big market in the U.S., in Europe,
and even in Australia we got also a big market for Basa.
And those fish we can feel the bones.
Right?
The three bones one here, one there and one there, very strong.
So you can see from the fish, from the external look of the fish you can see how it's grown,
if it's grown in good conditions or if it's grown in very high density.
Here for example, we can see that the fins are damaged.
So the fins are still there.
You know, you can see some cases where it's way worse but you can see that the fins are
damaged.
You see normally, it's supposed to be one big fin, one nice fin, but here you can see
that the rays are broken so the fish are not grown in the best conditions even if it's
probably one of the best farms I have visited in Asia.
You can see that the fish are still raised in very high density and they damage each
other.
So Basa is a fish that can be raised in high density in very poor water quality.
Here the water looks pretty good, but anyway in aquaponics, we always try to maintain a
low density of fish to keep the fish in the best conditions and to avoid any stress.
And if you avoid all the stress on the fish, you're going to avoid all the diseases.
So you don't have any disease on your fish.
You don't have any problem, and that's very easy to grow your fish.
Lady: This is about 1 kilo.
Jonathan: 1 kilo.
So all the fish are approximately this size here.
Right?
Lady: Average size.
Jonathan: Average size.
Lady: Yeah.
Average size is about 800.
Jonathan: 800?
Lady: 800 grams.
Jonathan: Ah yes, I understand now.
800 grams.
Yes.
So now we're going to go and feed the fish.
So you can see that to go and feed the fish, we use some nice rafts and those rafts are
going around the rope so it allows us to go all around the pond.
So we go from one way to another and we make sure to feed the fish during the journey.
So in this way, we are sure to throw the food everywhere around the pond.
So all the fish have access to the fish food.
That's very important actually in aquaponics and in aquaculture.
You want to make sure that all the fish have the same chance to have access to the fish
food and they can eat as much food as they want or as they need.
And the reason why that if you throw the food only from the shore you're going to have all
the big fish that are going to come and the small fish are not going to have access to
the food because they're going to be pushed away.
You can see the quantity of fish that there is in this pond.
It's just crazy.
Can you imagine 700 tons of fish in one pond?
That's huge.
So if you put all the food at one point, you're going to have a big concentration of all the
big fish that are going to fight to have access to your food, and the small ones are not going
to be able to reach it.
So here you can really see we spread the food everywhere so all the fish they just have
to swim to the surface, and they can directly eat.
So we do it twice a day or in this fish farm they feed twice a day.
I used to work in other fish farms where we used to feed three times or four times a day,
but here they do it only twice a day.
At this time of the year, at this specific temperature, they throw 10 tons of fish food
for 700 tons of fish which means they are feeding at 1.4%.
Here, they are fishing the pond and the fish is into those nets.
They will bring the net forward towards this place here and all the fish are going to be
here.
They're are going to be able to catch it, put it into the yellow bucket, and then some
workers are going to bring it into this boat.
And in that boat there are some little tanks, I mean big tanks, actually.
And this boat can hold 25 tons of fish.
So basically, the whole pond is going to come into this boat here and then the boat is going
to go to the factory where the fish are going to be processed.
How many workers are working for this farm?
Lady: It's about 15.
Jonathan: 15?
Lady: 15.
Jonathan: Okay.
So here in the factory, they are slaughtering the fish so they simply put the fish straightaway
into cold water.
So you see there is a bit of ice in the water so the water temperature is very low.
And as you know, the fish metabolism -- the fish activity is completely dependent on the
water temperature.
So when you put the fish into this water, into this cold water, the fish are going to
slowly decrease their metabolic activity and they're going to die.
And that's supposed to be a very human way to kill the fish, but also, it preserves the
quality of the flesh because there are no bacteria that can grow at this temperature.
So the flesh of the fish is remaining very, very good.
So the farm we just visited was a farm made of pond dug into the soil into the ground
but here we can see on the way back, I could see on the top of the Mekong River some floating
cages farms.
So here they grow the Basa into the Mekong River, thanks to some cages.
That's exactly the same system as we saw when we went to Cambodia, and we got a video about
it on YouTube.

Arsenal have been given an extra incentive to sort out their away form in the Premier
League.
It's because of their awful form on road as to why they won't be finishing in the top
four this season and it could see them slip out of the top six altogether as Burnley are
very much hot on their heels after beating Leicester City at the weekend.
Whilst Arsene Wenger's side would have a game in hand, the problem is that it's against
the Foxes away from home next month and if recent results are to go by they'll probably
leave the King Power Stadium empty handed.
Should that happen and Burnley end the campaign strongly in a bid to claim a top six finish,
then there's extra pressure on the Gunners to sort out their away day blues and also
win the Europa League.
The latter means they'll be back in the Champions League next season, but Atletico Madrid stand
in the way of reaching the final.
But failure in Europe coupled with dropping out of the top six could leave the Gunners
facing a nightmare scenario at the beginning of next season.
The World Cup takes place in Russia this summer with the final scheduled for July 15 2018.
A number of Arsenal players are expected to be involved at the major tournament and you
couldn't bet against the likes of Mesut Ozil or Alexandre Lacazette going all the way with
their respective nations.
Yet it's possible that the duo's holidays could be cut short as the north London outfit's
2018/2019 campaign could begin just 11 days after the World Cup final.

they look so ugly though I don't have a knack for making things like this
They so ugly I know its an gross looking presentation
but its T O T E S gonna be yummy
I made these out of 24 original glazed from Krispy Kreme
So basically two boxes of 1 dozen
alrighty lets get cookin
Let's start making the French toast Donuts
tadaa my all time faves Krispy Kreme donuts
I will be using their original glazed
Start off with making the eggs
sugar,
milk
Just eyeball how much you use. trust your gut and add as much as you think would work
Time for the original glazed
Cut them in half
Dip the two halves of french toast into the egg mix
wait it's not French toast what I mean is dip the original glazed
Add some butter then fry up the donuts
flip
looks so yummy
I'm lovin that buttery aroma right now
Once they're cooked move them to a plate
they're plumpin' up
the donuts are so soft They're as soft as tofu
Since these Donuts are so soft It's a good idea not to let them soak too much
Second bunch of Krispy Kreme donuts err.... I mean second box
so that makes this the 13th one
and by the way I ran out of the egg mix that used up 10 eggs
I had to crack open 8 more eggs
Tada I've transferred them to a plate And added a pad of butter
tada its all done They look amazing
And to drink I have some soy milk its an organic soy milk made by provomel
I've just found these recently And it tastes so yummy just check out the packaging
girls love things like.......~~~ uhhh I don't think I'm allowed to say that in 2018... sorry
but we like things like this
Packaging is so important I really enjoy picking up all sorts of organic products
I like to buy organic food, make up, and all sorts of things like soaps
I've got some maple syrup But I'm going to try the first ones without any
I dun goofed I shoulda prepped some cream and stuff for today
This is what they look like

it just melts in your mouth melt in yo mouth
It's covered with a sugary coating and its slightly melted and so yummy
I'm so shook at how gooey and melty it is
Usually when you make French toast like this You're supposed to soak the bread overnight
to get it to be this soft and gooey this soaked for only a bit and it got soo~ soft already
if you let it soak too long they'd fall right apart in the egg
For those of you who are into sweet and salty flavors You probably want to add some salt to this
butter is a bit salty it might be good

The butter as a bit of saltiness I love it so much I just can't get enough of this
When you take these original glazed and make them Into French toast they kinda shrink a bit
2 boxes worth of them turn into this
Perhaps I don't need any maple syrup Since I added so much sugar to the egg mix
It's plenty sweet already I kind of feel like adding some salt to this
I love that sweet and salty flavor
But just a bit Only a tiny amount
But I think the saltiness from the butter Goes better than with this the saltiness from Salt
its almost like a creme brullee

I get tongue tied so easily
I ain't doin' this on purpose

There are some people out there that have allergies to milk
Since this is so yummy Kids who weren't able to eat things like normal people
It's so nice to know that they can enjoy things that taste even better than the thing they're missing out on
I truly respect the hard work that people like this are doing
It's nice that they're doing something that makes everyone happy
This doesn't need the added sweetness But since we already have it out lets use a bit
maple syrup so yummy

This maple syrup doesn't only add extra sweetness but it adds extra flavor
that added flavor is so yummy

Olive oil is so yummy when you put it on anything
And so I thought it might make it yummier
olive oil didn't work
olive oil is just so different that it isn't really that friendly with the french toast donuts
It kind of looks like a layer cake

They were so soft and gooey It's an experience that you don't get that often
It was almost like eating a souffle
and the glazed portions of the donut were so crunchy and yummy
I forgot to prep these today but some whipped cream would have been yummy AF
I made the egg mixture like I would a normal french toast mix
but the bread used in making french toast isn't sweet
And since donuts in general are so sweet already
I shoulda made the egg mix a little less sweet
But since I like sweet stuff so much I totally loved it
But I feel as though some people out there Would prefer it with less sugar
And with less sugar in the egg mix you can offset that with some maple syrup
Also some ice cream and stuff like that would be the bees knees
