Woman makes racist comment to black man in airport – his answer is brilliant
It is deplorable that there is still so much racism in the world today. No one should think
they are superior to others just because they have a different skin color.
For many, these events may go unnoticed, but for those who suffer racism is a constant
presence in their daily life.
Fortunately, social media helps to bring this disrespect for others to light, and people
who are full of prejudice are publicly condemned for their attitude.
This is the story of Emmit Walker, a music executive who spoke out about a situation
he experienced only recently.
Walker, who works in Washington, was about to take a plane in first class, so he got
in the passenger queue with priority.
However, behind him was a woman who did not believe that this man could fly first class.
Her: Excuse me I believe you may be in the wrong place you need to let us through. This
line is for priority boarding.
Me: Priority meaning first class, correct?
Her: Yes…now excuse me, they will call y'all after we board
Me: *shove first class priority boarding pass in her face* You can relax ma'am I'm in
the right spot, been here longer, so you can board after me
Her: *still won't let it go* He must be military or something, but we paid for our
seats so he still should have to wait
Me: Nope too big to ever be in anybody's military. I'm just a n**** with money. (Everyone
in line starts to clap)
His reply was not only supported by the passengers who were waiting to board, but by thousands
of people who later liked and shared the post.

So today we're gonna talk about vocabulary learning.
Vocabulary learning is somehow tedious, boring...
I hate memorizing vocabulary.
'cause it's just boring.
Especially when you have to memorize from a word list.
Some teachers would suggest students to just.....read more!
When you learn vocabulary while reading, this is called incidental acquisition.
So past research has shown that the number of the word that is seen by the learner determines
whether or not he or she remembers this word or retain it long term.
Our question for today is: does extensive reading help vocabulary acquisition?
Profesor Horst did a research on second language vocabulary acquisition.
So today we're gonna look at the research and its results and see ...... My cat......
So professor Horst did a research on students learning second language vocabulary through
extensive reading.
And today we're gonna look at the research and its results and see what the learners
can take away from the research.
So, let's get started!
21 adult ESL students at a community center in Montreal were chosen.
They took a 100-item pre-reading word knowledge test before they started their extensive reading
program.
50 words are words that the learners should have known, along with 50 unfamiliar words
that are more likely to be learned from the reading instead of other sources.
After the program started, students choose books of their level and interest.
Upon finishing the reading, the participants took another 100-item post-test to test their
vocabulary growth in 6 weeks.
So now, let's look at the results.
All the participants got a higher score on the post-test after the extensive reading
program.
They learned about 17 new words throughout the 6 weeks.
10 of the words are from the 50 unfamiliar word list, which means that they acquired
these ten words through the extensive reading.
So from this research, we can conclude that extensive reading does help the acquisition
of new vocabulary.
And now we can think about what the learners can take away from this research.
Number one, learning 17 new words from a book uh...throughout 6 weeks.....I would say it's
not a very promising way to learn vocabulary.
So if you're looking for rapid growth in your vocabulary, extensive reading might not be
the best choice.
But extensive reading has another benefit.
It is that you could recognize frequently seen words more quickly.
In other words, you could increase your reading speed.
This is what a lot of people want and you can do this through extensive reading.
Extensive reading helps you increase your reading speed, at the same time, you could
learn vocabulary incidentally.
Number two, are the students going to remember these words learned from the reading in the
long run?
So reviewing is still a really important part and in this research, the post-test was given
to the students right after they read the book.
Maybe that's why they scored impressively.
Anyways, if you want to remember vocabulary for a long time, you still have to review,
not just read extensively.
Number three, the most important takeaway is that when you want to read extensively,
try to find a book that is of your level and also a topic that you're interested in.
In this research, all the participants read something that they're interested in and that
is of their level.
I think that also helped them acquire vocabulary incidentally because you would have the momentum
to keep on reading instead of feeling lost or feeling not being challenged at all.
So picking the right book is really important when you try to read extensively.
There's no clear conclusion regarding to the number of the encounters for vocabulary acquisition,
which is not surprising because it really depends on the readers' language proficiency
and other factors.
For example, if the new word is not lexicalized in the learners' first language, which means
that in the learners' first language, there's no equivalent or direct translation of the
word.
It may make it kind of difficult for the learner to remember what it means.
So there are many factors that contribute to incidental acquisition.
But what we can learn from this research is that extensive reading has more benefits than
incidental vocabulary acquisition.

what's up everyone I'm Melissa Elise and you're watching Melissa Elise TV
welcome to week three of book club we are in the homestretch of book one in the Outlander
series and I don't have any quick thoughts so let's jump right
in this week's reading started at chapter 26 with Jamie's return to Lallybroch with his
Sassenach wife coming to Lallybroch puts Claire in an interesting position
because even though she knew Dougal and Colum are Jamie's uncle's she had her own
confrontations with both of them and she was never trying to win their acceptance
or approval because she was always trying to get back to Craig na Dun but
now that she's chosen to stay with Jamie and his decision to return home this
brings Claire face to face with his family with his childhood with
everything that's really characteristic about Jamie's past
so she meets Jenny Jamie's sister and Jenny's husband Ian Murray
Jamie's best friend so now in addition to adjusting to a whole new family she
also has new responsibilities as the Lady of Lallybroch the Lady Broch Tuarach and
this is all brand new to Claire whereas to Jenny she's been born and bred for
this and she's been doing it all in Jamie's absence
you do see Claire start to find her place and Jenny is gracious in helping her they become this cute
little family with Jamie resuming his duties as Laird and Ian as his right
hand you've got little Jamie running around and all there are other servants
and tenants but of course things can't stay that way
Diana follows this pattern of lulling you into a comfortable place where everything seems fine and good and
pleasant and then before you even have a chance to prepare for it another crisis
rises and each one is more dire than the last but that's why you keep reading
the only thing that drives me a little crazy about Diana's writing is that she will
pause in the middle of action too give you backstory in to Claire or
Jamie's decisions or thoughts like during Claire's first rescue attempt to
free Jamie the story he tells about the Irish prisoner he was chained next to
once that showed him how to break a lock or again when Claire is fighting off the
wolf outside the prison and the story she tells about this corporal from the
canine unit that taught her how to know when a dog's going to attack though
relevant these side anecdotes take me out of the urgency of the moment and I
just want the action to continue I don't have a favorite passage this week so
much has happened and I can't believe there's only four chapters left I will
say I am glad that Jamie told Claire his last and main reason for marrying her in
chapter 27 which was out of love for her but it's not until chapter 31 but he
actually says the words I love you it seems crazy that it took this long for
the words to be said or written and even though Claire isn't the one to say it
she certainly proves it in her efforts to free Jamie and I have a feeling that
when she finally does say it it will be at just the right moment I asked her
characters this week I'm so glad we finally get to meet Jenny Fraser or
Murray and we did to spend more time with Murtagh
jenny is basically a female version of Jamie and such a vital part to his story and his life
thus far Claire has been on this journey getting the Jamie and meeting Jenny was the missing
piece she's his only immediate family and a wonderful character
Murtagh though mostly quiet and serious comes into a whole new light for Claire when she
finds out that he's Jaime's Godfather I really like the progression of their
relationship as they go on this journey to find Jaime and then to rescue him and
get him to the abbey there's a whole nother level of camaraderie that they
reach after having experienced all these things together
next week's reading is only four chapters the last four in book 1 and if
you've been following along with the reading schedule which is always
available in the description we finished book 1 on December 30th which was
yesterday I hope you enjoy reading through it with me and are ready to jump
in the book too dragonfly and amber reading starts January 2nd and the new
reading schedule is in the description of this video but leave me a comment if

include an overview of book 1 and those last four chapters and then we'll jump

about a video I'm going to make with some new friends
with whom I'll work together
and I don't know exactly what is all about, and that's why I have a meeting at 20:00.

But don't they care for us, the directors, who are trying to make a proper movie?
So, en route to the meeting point
I'm still on time as long as I find a parking space in time
because the meeting is in downtown
at Aristotelous Squaer, in front of the Electra Palace Hotel.
Regarding the video we are planning to make
I know two things.
The first is that it will be about this city, Thessaloniki.
The second is the thing that makes the video, let's say... difficult.
Here's a mini story inside this episode's story.
Just now a young lady pulled her car next to mine
and asked me if she's going on TV
since she noticed the camera. Unfortunately though, I wasn't recording at the time.

which of course means, infinite batteries!

What camera each of us will use, what we'll be doing
I'll most likely be on the waterfront
and film the crowd
and their reactions
when the fireworks go off.

of New Year's Eve, right on the year's turn.

It's the first time I'm taking part in a team
and I'm a bit stressed.
And it's not that I'm part of a team and I have to do my job right
it's also that I only have one chance to film this properly

We will also have a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone
which will also have to be set correctly in order to match the other cameras' settings.
Of course, we tested out the cameras' sensivity
along with the lenses in the darkness, since it will be dark enough
and once again I found out that my choice for this full frame camera was wise
since, under the same conditions
I was filming with the F1.4 Zeiss lens
at ISO 640
whereas the micro4/3 Panasonic GH5
reached out to ISO 3200
with a lens attached, that I cannot remember now which one exactly
with relatively wide aperture, but I cannot recall now
yet, whatever the case the camera is m4/3
which means the (full frame equiv.) F cannot go that low
compared to full frame.
We discussed all these on Electra Palace Hotel's balcony with the rest of the team.
Who would have thought that starting with gambling, investing and entrepreneurship
I would end up filming fireworks on New Year's Eve!

How is God present in the world? In the soul? (I, 8)
How God is present in the world and how he is present in the soul is a fascinating question,
not only theologically, but also for our spiritual lives.
It is a very profound subject to meditate on.
And Aquinas, I think, does a marvelous job at laying out the ways to think about God's presence in the world, and in us, dwelling in us.
He talks about this in the Prima Pars of the Summa theologiae in question eight, article three.
And there he says that God is present in the world in three classical ways--
and, in fact, this is not unique to Aquinas:
he is picking up a long theological tradition--
but it is by his essence, his presence and his power.
That is the way God is present in the whole world, in all of creation.
And then there is a special way that we will talk about with respect to the soul in just a minute.
But he is present to the world by his essence: what does that mean?
God's essence is to be, to exist.
God is being.
God is "ipsum esse subsistens," Aquinas says, being itself subsisting.
He is.
Everything else is only existing relative to God.
So, God is present in the world as what is causing everything to be.
If you just pause and think about that for a moment, how profound, how deep that goes.
Everything depends at every moment on God sustaining it in being.
So, everything, every place, every being depends on God.
God is constantly present to it, holding it in being, as it were.
That is the first way that God is present in creation.
The second way: by his presence. Well, that sounds sort of redundant: what does that mean?
God is everywhere by his presence.
He is present to things by his presence.
Aquinas means by that, that he is present to things, as it were, gazing on everything.
Everything is open to the eye of God.
And this is not a gaze that is a harsh, severe gaze, not the gaze of a judge, who is looking to see what you are doing wrong;
it is the gaze of our loving Father,
God who is perfectly good,
and who has created all things to share in his goodness,
who apportions good things to all things,
and he looks at them and rejoices in them, in a certain sense, as good.
That is why he has created them: to be good.
He sees that they are good, as we read in Genesis.
So, for the spiritual life, imagine this: simply putting yourself in the presence of God, knowing that God is supporting me in being right now.
And God sees me.
He sees me at every moment of my life, not looking at me first of all as a judge, looking at me with love.
Okay, the third way that God is present to creation:
he is present by his power.
Aquinas means by that, that God has a kind of mastery over all things that exist.
He not only sustains them in being, he not only sees what is happening in creation,
but he can do whatever he will, at every moment, in creation.
So he is present everywhere by his power to affect the world,
which means we can always turn to God for help.
Now, there is a special way that God is present in the rational creature, in the human soul.
And this is especially beautiful and especially important for our spiritual lives.
Aquinas says, in the same article that I have been referring to, that God is present in a special way, when we know and love God.
So, as we come to know God, we share in how God knows himself.
We become more like God in that way.
And as we love God, we come to love God a bit like God loves himself.
We become assimilated to God in this knowing and loving.
And then, God is present in us most perfectly.
We are, as it were, drawn into God as we know and love him.
That is something that non-rational creatures are not capable of doing,
not capable of sharing in the very life of God which is to know and love himself.
We can do that.
And the more we do that, the more we are in God's presence, the more we are drawn into him.
And in fact that is our ultimate beatitude, our ultimate destiny.
The life of heaven is to see God perfectly and to know him absolutely perfectly with a kind of infinite, perfect love, insofar as a human creature is capable of that.
That is what we will be able to do in heaven,
and that is to share the life of God as perfectly as we can.

through at that time I've been like hanging out a family in that and yeah it's been

recording this it is the last day of 2017 oh my gosh can you believe it it's

I've heard of her and yes you guys requested this video a while ago and I
really want to hear our music again cuz it's been too long people it's big too

called love yourself and yeah you guys wanted me to see this a little while ago
I have heard this song before by Justin Bieber but I am excited to hear it from
someone else because sometimes another singer singing a popular song can sound
better but um we'll just have to see so if no further ado let's get into it

crystal clear in my opinion I can hear the lyrics more better because when I
heard the Justin Bieber version I didn't feel the emotional touch but I felt with
this one this one I had more of emotional touch to it and that's
probably because Sheila has that voice that can really move you in a way it can
really make you feel such a and I did feel that for this performance
I felt the emotion I felt the power and like I love how she's having fun with
her singing like she's enjoying it that's what I love people enjoying what
they're doing it's amazing Oh gonna come down thank you guys for
requesting this to me it certainly was great and yeah Wow
Sheila does surprise me like I haven't heard of her so long and it's so
refreshing to hear her sing again it's it's such a good good feeling when when
I hear her sing I don't know how to explain it but it's like it's like a
drop of Sun it's just beautiful I can't even
um but yeah I've gotta stop I really talk in this room people it's really It's hot
in this room why am I talking about that anyway I hope you guys enjoyed this
video and definitely check out shila amzah like she is an amazing singer and
she deserves all the attention these are just my opinions I think she's awesome
and I just I love and love her voice it's it's a beautiful thing to listen to
the voice is a bit like dimash his voice but it has so much power and
emotion to it and I could just feel everything that she is feeling and I
love that and dimash when he performs he lights up the stage and it is a
wonderful but I'm not here talking about too much I'm talking about Sheila but I
feel like they both have good similarities they both a similar when it
comes to vocals in my opinion anyway like they can be just as powerful as
each other but although I feel that dimash can go much more higher in tone
than Sheila but yeah that that is okay I really love her voice like there is no
denying how good of like she'll definitely go far away I'm
goodness it is fantastic you know people talent the world is a wonderful place
when you walk into the world of talent and I am just always blown away by
such beauty in music like me I love music and you guys probably know that I
love music it's it oh it's so good me I do like this song I really like the
message behind it loving yourself and the message of you can't love anyone
else until you love yourself yeah I don't know if that's the full message of
the song but yeah in a way it is true because you need to love yourself
because how can you love someone else if you can't even love yourself it's
it's like a true statement in a way I I don't know what do I know but um yeah I
really do like this song a lot and hearing it from someone different was
certainly good I like like each song sounds different like it's the same
song but it just has a different touch to it when you hear it from someone
different and I like that the fact that people sing that songs that are very
popular and they're able to put a personal touch to it it just makes it
wonderful to me in my opinion anyway anyway I've been talking for long enough
I think I'm gonna leave the video here but one thing the far agar that's not
related to this I am going away to New Zealand for a little while so I won't be
making any more videos after this one yeah I am quite busy over this time
period and a lots been going on so yeah I don't know when I'll be back

After check-in, we went out to explore the streets of Jiufen.

After breakfast, we left the B&b and took

We took a nice long walk until Jnguasgi,
a mining town where we saw the golden waterfalls.

but this golden color is because the frequent rains and the abundance of heavy metal in the stone.
At the mouth of the river,
there is the Yin Yang Sea,
which recieves this name for the combination of blue and yellow colors of the water.
In the afternoon we took a train until Shifen station and its old street,
where the railway is still active.
Shifen is famous for flying lanterns.
Where people write their wishes and prays to the
four sides of the lantern.
There are many colors, and each color represents wishes like health,
money, love, professional success,
peace, and others.
We couldn't resist trying the recommended spicy chicken wings
stuffed with rice
and the peanut ice cream roll with coriander.
After hesitating a lot, we got excited and wrote our own lantern
with some wishes.
