Youtube daily report w Dec 16 2017

Hey guys for Complex News, I'm Natasha Martinez.

When Disney officially announced that it bought 20th Century Fox, the future of some beloved

characters such as Deadpool were in question.

Disney has never exactly pulled off an R Rated film before as they are obviously known for

being family friendly.

Deadpool, to the delight of many, is the opposite of family friendly.

So after hearing Disney acquired the rights to the Merc with a Mouth, fans were terrified

of the character's crass, sarcastic tone being watered down and stripped of it's R-Rating.

Disney CEO Bob Iger made a statement to the Hollywood reporter that calmed a lot of nerves.

"[Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded.

But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool.

As long as we let the audiences know what's coming, we think we can manage that fine."

Keeping the R-Rating means Disney is down to get into more mature movies, which is very

exciting for fans of the studio.

Marvel is already owned by Disney but Fox owned rights to Marvel characters like X-Men,

and the Fantastic Four.

Marvel's R-rating with Deadpool was massively successful.

The first installment became the top grossing X-Men movie ever, cashing in at 782 million

dollars worldwide.

Deadpool is set to be released in theaters on June 1st, 2018 and this latest news has

renewed the excitement.

That's your news for now, for on this and the rest of today's stories subscribe to Complex

BREAKING NEWS! Trump HAULED Into FBI – THIS COULD GET UGLY!!! Top Stories Today - Duration: 10:05.

BREAKING NEWS! Trump HAULED Into FBI – THIS COULD GET UGLY!!!

Law enforcement officers always have a tough job, especially those who have to answer to

the political brass.

Getting caught in the middle of a political scandal is as easy as getting takeout in Washington

D.C. and being if that happens, being compromised isn't far behind.

Under the tutelage of Barrack Hussain Obama, this seems to be what has happened to the

bulk of the higher-ups in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Their credibility came under fire in the wake of Hillary's massive miscarriages of justice,

and their names are far from being cleared.

President Trump began to get an understanding of just how badly things were being run over

at the FBI, even before he was in office, and now that his security clearance is significantly

higher, his hints to the American people about the state of those who are supposed to be

in charge of carrying out justice on our behalf.

Fox News reported that the President addressed just that issue when talking at a Quantico

graduation of this year's new crop of the FBI's best and brightest.

What might seem like a high steaks game of political chess is no laughing matter to the

President, and he plans to clean up the FBI, no matter who he angers along the way:

"President Trump told a graduating class of law enforcement officers at the FBI Academy

on Friday that he 'has your back 100 percent' and pledged his White House will always stand

behind police.

'The president of the United States has your back 100 percent,' Trump said in a

17-minute speech to state and local law enforcement officers who completed [sic] a special training

course at the bureau.

Trump's support for law enforcement has been no secret, but the comments at the FBI

Academy came as bad blood between the White House and bureau has reached an all-time high.

Trump has blasted the bureau's senior leadership and its reputation, calling it "in tatters"

and "the worst in history."

'It's a shame what's happened with the FBI,' Trump said Friday, moments before

he left for Quantico.

'But we're going to rebuild the FBI.

It'll be bigger and better than ever.'

'Everybody — the level of anger at what they've been witnessing with respect to

the FBI is certainly very sad,' he added."

No one thinks that the boots on the ground, responding to crisis and investigating suspicious

deaths are the heart of the problem at the FBI.

This, like most of the problems in our country, is a politically motivated one.

Palms are being greased and backs are being scratched in order for very wealthy and influential

people, such as the Clintons, to get away with things that should be prosecutable offenses.

While some might consider President Trump's comments at the commencement to be aggressive

or offensive in some way, to those who truly want to serve their country and aid in the

carriage of justice, his comments should have been very supportive and reassuring.

He's promising to give those same, honest law enforcement officers a leadership that

they can be proud to serve under.

He's promising to fix what Obama broke and deliver the American people a justice department

that is once again dedicated to justice.

"Newly released documents reveal that then-FBI Director James Comey's draft statement on

the Hillary Clinton email probe was edited in a way that watered down the agency's

findings.

But during his speech, the president praised agents who keep the country safe and whom

he does not blame for the investigations that have dogged his administration.

The White House said Friday newly revealed FBI records show there is an 'extreme bias'

against Trump among senior leadership at the FBI.

Watch The Video :

About 200 leaders in law enforcement from around the country attended the weeks-long FBI National Academy program aimed at raising law enforcement standards and cooperation.

Coursework included intelligence theory, terrorism and terrorist mindsets, law, behavioral science, law enforcement communication, and forensic science.."

The promises that the President has made to fix the corruption in Washington and the FBI have not made him popular with those who've been playing this political game for a long time.

They're very set in their ways, and no matter how hard they search,

they can't seem to find any way to keep president Trump in his lane with the promise of skeletons, the way Washington insiders are usually reigned in.

If we think of the FBI like a body and imagine that body having been fed a steady diet of mind-numbing drugs that keep it from performing its job the way it should,

then we can see President Trump as the parent who's about to check them into rehab.

Drug addicts hate everyone while they're detoxing, but they are free of the physical addiction when the nastiness is purged out.

If they choose to go back to their old ways after they have been detoxed, that's a different matter, but at least they have a chance.

The same will be true for the FBI; if the American people let this investigative body

go back to its toxic ways after President Trump has left office, that will be our own

fault.

His job is to fix everything he possibly can, and leave the FBI and the country better off

than he found it.

what do you think about this?

"Don't Stop Running" in Super Mario Maker! - Duration: 8:06.

This week super mario run celebrated it's first birthday.

Super Mario Run is a pretty interesting game for the mario franchise not only is it mario's

first own game on android and iOS, but it is also the first Mario game, where Mario

is forced to run, no matter if he wants to or not.

But is Super Mario Run really the only game where Mario can't stop?

Or is it possible to create a Don't stop running stage in Super Mario Maker as well?

Well you probably guessed it by now, today we are going to add a new entry onto our dangerous

list of evil, today we are going to take a look at a stage where Mario isn't allowed

to stop running.

So are you ready?

Let's do this!

So first we are going to take a look at the stage and afterwards we are going to take

a look at how everything works.

This is the don't stop level.

Mario is forced to beat this stage without ever slowing down, because if he decides to

just let go of the run button for a second the floor transforms into shiny yet deadly

coins and mario is forced to take a lethal lava bath.

But if Mario wants to proceed here, he not only needs to run like crazy but he also needs

to collect the five red coins which are along the way in order to get a key because the

only door here takes him back to the beginning of the stage.

The level changes its layout slightly once Mario made it through once.

Some new bullet blasters appear which block his path now while others go away.

It is only possible for our running plumber to collect all coins during the second run

through, since a couple of coins are unreachable the first time he makes it through here.

If Mario misses a coin he is sent back to the beginning of the stage over and over again

until he finally collected all five red coins and obtained the key.

Together with his new friend, the key, mario is able to unlock this door which grants him

access to the checkpoint flag and the second part of the stage.

This area works a little bit different than the one before.

Once again everything collapses if Mario only stops for a split second thanks to a hidden

evil don't stop contraption.

But this time mario's goal isn't to collect five red coins but to make it through this

area three times in a row.

At the end is a door that takes him back to the beginning, but if he makes it through

here three times, the door becomes blocked and the exit pipe opens up.

Everytime our plumber runs through this area it becomes more dangerous.

While there aren't many things that try to stop him during his first time, the second

time a lot of evil threats appear.

Suddenly there are cannonballs, bullet blasters and lava-bubbles which try to stop mario.

But stopping is no option.

Because stopping is lethal.

Once Mario survived this area for the third time the exit is unblocked and he is finally

able to reach his beloved axe at the end of the bridge.

Hooray!

Okay so how does this stage work, well it's actually surprisingly simple.

This is what a don't run contraption cell looks like.

There is a winged p-switch on tracks and a muncher, and that's it.

Once the winged p-switch gets loaded it starts to move towards the muncher, if the p-switch

hits the muncher it is triggered and in consequence the floor is destroyed.

The reason why this works is because of mario makers wonderful loading logic.

Entities on tracks are only loaded if they are no more than four blocks away from the

current horizontal camera border.

The pswitch takes a little bit more time in order to reach the muncher, than it takes

mario to run through one screen plus four blocks.

So if mario runs the p-switch becomes unloaded, but if mario only stops for a small moment,

the p-switch isn't unloaded and therefore triggered.

And that's the whole trick.

It's not even necessary to put the cells this close together, if you are running into

troubles with the enemy limit, but the closer they are the faster the contraption triggers.

So the reason why the stage changes layout whenever loaded is pretty basic spawn blocking.

I won't go over each change in detail since they are pretty basic, but the last layout

change is really really interesting and the logic behind it has insane potential.

So this bullet blaster here blocks the pipe the first two times it is loaded but the third

time it is loaded the bullet blaster doesn't spawn.

Right?

Well, interestingly no.

While this just happened before when we played the stage we can put mario up there and reload

the room as often as we want, the blaster won't go away.

But if we play the stage as intended the blaster disappears the third time it is loaded.

So the reason why the blaster should go away is this invisible block, if this block is

triggered by the shell the blaster can't load, but this block can't be triggered

by the shell, since the blaster blocks it, right?

Well, no.

There is this old one hundred year old question that has plagued humanity for an answer.

Does a bullet blaster exist if no one looks at it?

And I'm proud to announce that we as humanity finally have an answer to this question.

So check this out, if mario reloads this room three times, the invisible block isn't triggered.

But if Mario runs towards this bullet blaster, the invisible block is triggered the third

time mario reaches this area, and the blaster doesn't load.

The old question, does a bullet blaster exist while no one looks at it has finally found

an answer.

No, it doesn't.I'll explain in a second why this works but let's first take a look

at an even cooler practical example for this quantum blaster.

We have a pretty basic room here, to the right is a contraption consisting of a trigger and

a quantum blaster.

This contraption is wired to two output question blocks.

This little contraption is able to detect and store the information if mario walked,

or ran at specific location of the level.

Here it tests for these four blocks.

If our plumber runs through these four blocks the question block to the left is triggered.

If Mario walks through these four blocks though, the question block to the right is triggered.

Crazy isn't it?

So why is this possible.

Well it's actually surprisingly simple!

We once again make use of the strange loading properties of mario maker.

Entities are loaded once they are four blocks away from the camera.

This means that when mario makes his way through this section, the trigger and the shell become

loaded and then the bullet blaster gets loaded once mario comes close enough to it.

The thing is if Mario runs the blaster becomes loaded before the shell is able to pass it.

But if mario walks, the shell moves further to the right, but the blaster isn't loaded

yet.

The blaster has no collision detection when unloaded and so the shell is able to pass

right through it and to trigger the other question block instead.

The reason why all this works is because of something really weird.

All basic entities are unloaded if they are more than four blocks away of the current

camera, but moving shells are only unloaded once they are 16 blocks away.

So this means that all entities between block 5 and sixteen outside of the camera are ignored

by the shell.

Take a look at this scene.

If we start this room the shell should never be able to hit this question block at the

end.

There are tons of things in its path that should prevent it from reaching the block,

including a chain chomp.

Yet as soon as we start this room the shell travels to the left and back to the right,

and if we walk to the block we can see that it was triggered even though this should be

completely impossible, because all the objects in between the shell and the question block

are, in a ,what I like to call quantum state.

They exist but they can't interact with anything.

Or do they exist yet?

Anyway, the same happened in the don't stop running stage, here the shell triggered the

invisible block below the bullet blaster before the bullet blaster existed, and then the blaster

is loaded on top of it.

That's pretty cool and I'm really looking forward to toy around with this more, because

there has to be something completely mind blowing possible because of it.

So yeah that are quantum blaster, I hope you enjoyed this little video, if you enjoyed

it don't forget to leave me a thumbs up and maybe you feel especially experimental

today and want to find out if it is possible to subscribe to this channel if you close

your eyes and don't look at the subscribe button, or if the subscribe button becomes

unloaded as soon as you don't look.

I hope that you have a wonderful day and to see you soon.

Goodbye!

Why is the ISRAELI ARMY so POWERFUL? - VisualPolitik EN - Duration: 13:13.

Israel does not have the World's the biggest army.

But it is the most effective.

Think about it… we are talking about a country with less than 9 million inhabitants.

Nonetheless, they have won wars against countries 10 times bigger.

For example, during the 6 days war, Israel confronted a coalition that included EGYPT,

SYRIA and JORDAN.

All of these countries put together summed up to more than 130 million people.

And they sent over 240,000 soldiers: twice as much as the Israeli army did.

In other words: no one would expect a victory for Israel.

But history was rather different.

In just 6 days, the Israeli Defense Forces, also known as IDF, wiped out their enemies.

And yes, I know what you are gonna say now.

The Israelis have the best technology and weaponry, right?

Well… that is true now but it wasn't back then.

For instance, in 1973, during the YOM KIPPUR war, Israel's weapons were as modern as

those of their main rival, SYRIA.

In fact, the IDF had some combat jets manufactured in the 50s, the famous A4 Skyhawk.

However, the Syrians had state of the art anti-aircraft missiles, the S 200.

They were given to the Syrians by the Soviets just 5 years before.

And who won that war?

Exactly!

Israel!

OK, OK… now I can hear you saying… 'oh, come on Simon, but Israel has the support

of America!!!

That's a really big help!!!'

And… yes, in this point you are right.

Israel is the country that receives the most help from Uncle Sam.

BUT… do you know of any other country who buys the best weaponry from America?

Saudi Arabia!

The Saudies have an army as big and modern as the Israelian one.

But if you've been subscribed to VisualPolitik for a long time, you already know the big

failure of the Saudi army when they had to fight guerrilla warriors, namely, those HOUTHIE

rebels from Yemen.

In other words, neither the technology, nor the American support are enough to explain

why the Israeli army is such a fearful one.

So today the question is…

Why is the Israeli army so powerful?

What are the key elements explaining such a military success?

Today we are going to tell you the 5 key facts that explain this.

FAST DECISION MAKING

Every army is based on hierarchy and authority, right?

Well… some of them are more flexible than others.

In this other video, we explained you how the Saudi army has a bigger sense of hierarchy

and the officials don't have much power to make their own decisions.

The same goes with other arab countries like SYRIA or EGYPT.

So, here is an example.

Imagine a Syrian unit defending a position.

Let's say their headquarters have been destroyed before the soldiers in the front line are

aware of it.

If they have to follow the normal procedure, they will have to wait until someone gives

them an order.

During this time, they don't know if they should retreat, strike back or coordinate

with other military units.

And now you might wonder Why are the arab armies so centralized?

Don't forget that most of those countries are dictatorships or absolute monarchies.

If you are a tyrant, you want your army to be under your control, to micromanage every

Little decision in order to prevent a coup d'etat.

The Israeli army is way different from this.

Let's get back to the previous example.

In this case, the Israeli commander on the front line wouldn't need to wait for orders.

He has a degree of decision making power.

So he can react immediately and seize the time and the opportunities.

In fact, this is pretty normal in all Western armies.

The big planning is centralized but the execution is decentralized.

This way, the organization is more flexible and can react more quickly.

But, unlike the Western countries, Israel has something unique in their culture.

We are talking about a pretty unknown fact about this country but, yet, a very important

one.

Israel is the least hierarchical country on the planet, and you can feel this in every

aspect.

Inside of an Israeli company, it's pretty normal for an average worker to have a discussion

with his boss.

Debates are a common thing and there is a pretty small sense of authority.

Actually, in the 70s, a Dutch antropologist named GEERT HOFSTEDE studied the power relationships

in different countries.

Over the course of 6 years, he surveyed IBM workers in different offices around the globe.

This is how the 'POWER DISTANCE INDEX' was born.

And among all those countries, Israel has the lowest power distance, while the arab

countries like EGYPT or SAUDI ARABIA rank among the highest.

In other words, Israeli citizens are educated in flexibility more than any other nation.

INTERNAL COHESION

In Israel, military service is mandatory for every citizen, regardless of their social

condition or their gender.

Both men and women, rich and poor start from the bottom.

Well… in fact, this is not exactly true.

The ultra orthodox jews don't need to do this military service and the Palestinian

population are discriminated against.

But the rest of Israel's citizens must serve in the military, and fall into a meritocratic

scheme.

This means, everyone must follow the same rules in order to be promoted.

And this is not as common as you might think.

For instance, during World War II, the aristocrats who joined the British Army started with higher

positions than the peasants and the Working class.

And, of course, such elitism tends to destroy an army's morale and make it harder for

it to function.

And the same happens in today's arab armies.

For example, the Saudi army consists of both civil servants and members of the Royal family.

And hierarchy matters a lot.

The son of a Saudi prince will never be a soldier.

And, as you can imagine, this classist structure has negative consequences.

Consequences that have a lot to do with the same key fact.

COMBAT MORALE

In the year 1973, Israel fought the Egyptian and the Syrian army at the same time.

As we said at the beginning, back then, Israel was not the technological powerhouse it is

today.

Syrians had those S 200s we mentioned before.

And during the first days, those anti-aircraft missiles destroyed a lot of Israeli combat

jets.

Israel had to retreat.

Nonetheless, Uncle Sam was here to help.

The White House sent a Package of weapons so they could neutralize the S 200s and the

radars.

Things like FLARES that could confuse the smart missiles that were guided by temperature.

This way, the Israelis struck back and, in little time, they finished the Syrian defenses.

And… guess what happened next!

Well, a lot of those arab soldiers, scared of being wiped out from the air, they defected.

If you look at the picture on the screen, you will see 7 Syrian tanks.

They are not moving but none of them is destroyed.

What does this mean?

Well, it means the soldiers that were inside of those tanks decided to run away.

Defection is common when morale is low.

And this is a common problem for arab armies.

20 Syrian troops defect to southern Turkish province of Hatay

Think about it… if you are an Israeli soldier, or an American one, you know you must be loyal

to your country.

But Arab soldiers have too many ethnic, national and religious identities.

Imagine you are a Syrian soldier and, at the same time, you are a KURD, or you belong to

the muslim brotherhood.

Both groups are chased by the Syrian government.

So who are you loyal too?

Of course, the army pays your bills but… when your life is at risk and everything is

lost…

What is more important?

Your salary or your life?

On other words… no matter your wealth and your technology, if your soldiers are not

strongly motivated, you have already lost.

And the Israelis know this better than anyone…

You will learn it now too…

HUMAN CAPITAL

All tanks place their engines on the backside.

Why?

Because usually, the rockets hit on the frontside and you want your tank to keep working even

after being hit.

This is why all the models, from the German LEOPARDS to the Russian T 90s keep their engines

on the backside.

Nonetheless, the Israeli army doesn't value the vehicle as much as their soldiers.

This is why, the Israeli MERKAVA is the only one of its kind that has the engines on the

frontside.

This way, a rocket on the frontside will destroy the tank.

Putting aside the ethics, Israel has a really small population.

That means that they can't allow themselves to lose too many soldiers.

This is why they receive much more intense training, with real bullets and better equipment.

Don't forget this is the country where KRAV MAGA, one of the most advanced martial arts,

was born.

You can see this human capital doctrine reflected in their intelligence service, the MOSSAD.

It is considered one of the best in the entire world.

And if one day you happen to travel to Israel, you should know that they will take your phone

number and other data because they know information is power.

But, OK, OK, I know what you want to hear now.

You came to this video because you wanted to hear about state of the art weaponry, right?

Well… here you have it!

MADE IN ISRAEL

During the 80s, the Israeli Government wanted a secret weapon.

A weapon no one had ever heard of until recently.

So they met a local manufacturer, a company called RAFAEL, to design a very special vehicle,

the so called PEREH.

This is a vehicle that looks like a tank but, in fact, is a tank hunter weapon with a big

rocket launcher.

If you know about weapons, you know there is a big difference.

Tanks have a reach of between 2 and 4 kilometers.

PEREH rockets can reach a distance of 30 kilometers.

So imagine the situation.

The enemies would take satellite pictures to see the Israeli weaponry.

And they would see a lot of normal tanks.

Based on this, they would plan their strategy.

But then, surprise!

Those tanks are not tanks but, in fact, something with a much bigger reach.

For decades, this PEREH was one of the most mysterious weapons of the Israeli army.

And their main strength was that no one knew anything about them!

So now the question is home come Israel makes its own secret weapons and other countries

don't?

The answer is that in Israel there are lots of rocket science companies that make a world

class defense industry.

Do you remember this video where I told you about the Israeli startups?

In the 80s, the Israeli government created a special program, the so called YOZMA.

This program consisted of 10 hedge funds with both, private and government money.

Those funds helped to create lots of tech companies.

And do you know what was the favourite industry for those brand new startups?

Of course!

The military industry!

At the end of the day, the army was a rich and reliable client.

All of a sudden, dozens of weapon manufacturers were born.

Companies that created customized products that met the exact needs the Israeli army

had at any given moment.

From the IRON DOME defense system to the MERKAVA tanks or the PEREH we mentioned before.

Nonetheless…

What happened in the other countries?

What happened in Saudi Arabia?

As you know, the Saudi economy has a problem: it relies heavily on the oil industry.

Of course, thanks to the dinosaur juice, the saudies have become rich and they can pay

for the 3rd biggest army in the World, only surpassed by China and America.

But expensive is not a synonym for good.

The Saudi army buys their tanks from the USA, and those are customized for the needs of

the American army.

Besides, that makes it harder to have a secret weapon because everyone knows what you bought

on the international market.

And yes, I know what you are thinking.

On this video, it seems we are talking marvels about the Israelis, right?

Make no mistake, the Israeli army has its weak points.

In fact, there is an organization that could make their life harder.

But we will talk about it in another video.

Now the question for you is…

Who do you think can defeat the Israeli army?

What do you think their weak points are?

Please, leave your answer in the comment section below.

She's probably busy or something

but we were best friends she can always make time for me

right?

Did anything happen in your dream?

Nothing I havent seen before

but, I feel better now and I'm ready to find this grey cat.

Let's find her

Hahaha

How cute?

The lost princess out looking for another lost girl.

*ghasp*

Hey Kiara isn't opal with you?

Hey isn't Opal with you?

Actually...

Is she sick or something?

I can get you guys the correct land medication for that.

She's gone...

Gone?

umm?

What happened to her kiara?

We were under water and ... and

What did you do to her?

I did nothing I just sat there and watched her fade away...

I don't know where she is anymore...

You should have done something!

You were there and you have so much magic you could have saved her!

I know!

It's okay..

you're really gonna stand there and defend the daughter of the person who's

trying to kill us?

I dunno...

You're probably apart of a bigger plan or something and we just welcomed warmly to our friend group. What a traitor.

I guess I'm always gonna be seen as the bad guy I should get used to being

lonely huh?

Kiara?

Kiara?

Ashley?

Look... I know were not super close or anything,

To be honest we've never really spoken to each other but I wanted to say I know how it is to

lose someone close to you.

Me and Opal were so happy and I just stood by and

watched her disappear.

Don't listen to Gabriela. She never

thinks before she speaks and forgets how others feel.

I can see that

I don't really know how to say this but I've got no one else to turn to

well it's not like I do either.

Well... I feel like I've lost my purpose.Gabriella

has forgotten about me moved on to Hannah

I can help you somehow?

Well.. how about I teach you magic and in return you help

me save opal?

Yes...Please!

Where are you going, the bells about to ring?

You think I'm gonna waste my time here when Opal needs saving ?

Oh yeah?

you're coming with me right?

Don't you think a teacher will see us leaving?

Or we'll get in trouble?

I think you forget that I'm the daughter of the most

powerful mage under the sea oh right you sure you got this though please Ashley i

Oh right! You sure you got this tho?

*Pfft* Please Ashley

I brainwashed Gabriella for two days straight and she let me live in her

house you think I can't handle a couple of teachers oh right then what are we

Oh right! Then what are we waiting for!

Hey Gabby.. I don't see Kiara anywhere... shes not in her seat.

Maybe she's just late or something?

You don't think we were a little too hard on her this morning?

What are you talking about?

Could you blame me? she tried to kill me before!

I guess...

we were all getting on so well ...

She brainwashed me in the past.

In the past.

what if she did change?

Who knows I guess she'll need to prove it!

Their seats empty there just kind of make me feel a little guilty.

it's a desk quit worrying

Okay this is my room we can chill in here.

Woah! You're pretty minimalistic?

Yeah I guess I'm used to it since I grew up in a cave.

Oh yeah, I forget that sometimes!

Let's start with.....

Levitation!

No! Teleportation!

NO!

MIND CONTROL!

whoa whoa how about you learn to charge magic first then we can work on

actual spells .

oh yeah sorry this is just all so exciting!

Well , the first thing is breathing you can't be in a panic you have to have an open mind so

breathe in and out.

Breathing in ... and out

you're getting the hang of it

*uhm*

Another important thing for casting

spells is having...

I bet they haven't even noticed I wasn't at school today...

Huh?

Ahhh don't worry!

No Ashley you should tell me doing magic when you're angry or upset

can make dark magic and that's not a good time do you look angry you're upset

I guess not but I'm here if you need to talk I

didn't notice you being by yourself a lot recently and I know what it's like

I've been alone my whole life and when I finally make a friend she's taken away

so that's why I'm so focused on getting opal I guess well at least someone

noticed but we have each other now right so how did you get this magic thing working?

Oh right!

*tries a spell*

Did it work?

Don't worry you won't get it straight

away magic takes time yeah let's try again

Right!

*distracted*

Look Ashley, we can't start like this...

Huh?

you clearly have something on your mind and when casting spells you need a clear head.

I feel useless so useless, pointless in fact I have always relied on Gabbie but

now looking back it was just Hannah's replacement and now she's back to being

best friends why would she need to talk to me I get it

I am forgettable, small, talentless. I haven't achieved anything with my life I

spend all my time trying to make Gabriella happy I need to become

stronger, better and individual and if I can't change that then what's the point

in carrying on?

Oh Ashley...

it's fine

Please Kiara, I want to become a new version of myself.

Where am I?

Huh?

finally you're awake I thought you were

stronger than this princess what have you done? Where's Kiara? you have feelings

for that runt she's useless now why would you take her she's probably on

land or something grieving you! Grieving am I dead?

no no but you may as well be huh good luck escaping this place no one ever has

where are we an empty void it's a time line with no physical appearance a

bunker for our original forms to rest to exist forever. original forms? Then what's

happened to us? We have made someone new someone stronger than we could have ever

been separated! I don't understand? we've fused you idiot how Fusion was a

we've fused you idiot !

How? Fusion was a magical myth no one's ever done it. a magical myth are you for real if

a magical myth are you for real?

If someone were to fuse how would you even know? huh? tell me you runt!

I suppose...

no one will ever know and we will rot in this white world for the rest of our

miserable lives .

Kiara knows!

You're really putting all your faith in that useless

cat she can't even fulfill a simple capture

mission let alone save you.

my father he will know I'm missing I'm the heir to

the throne! are you really the heir to the throne anymore? huh ?technically our

fusion is the heir no no once your father is dead we will make this kingdom

rot like I had to when I was sentenced that horrid jail cell for 17 miserable

years

No...

excuse my intrusion my king but this is an emergency. what is the emergency?

They're was a report of explosions and attacks on the outskirts of town. oh no it must

be ... yes we assume it's him he must be nearby send out search parties to find

him is it clear who he attacked yet no it's uncertain are there any missing

mermaid reports any Hospitalised civilians. not from last night's attack

times or today. Well increase the security on Atlantica we can't have any

more accidents. send out search parties for the loose criminal and tell me as

soon as possible when you make here from Opal. I can't lose another family

member, my prized daughter. we will do everything in our power your highness

wait I'm going to help search.

I won't allow it. you can't stop me I'm the king

and if something were to happen to you I'm afraid you wouldn't be if putting my

life on the line is worth protecting opal then so be it

think of the kingdom with the most powerful criminal out on the loose

attacking innocents I was strongly suggest you stay here where it's safe

I'm afraid you would be a strong target. come on let's save Atlantica

Looking at Becoming Jane and the relationship between Tom Lefroy and Jane Austen - Duration: 38:02.

If you're a regular listener to this podcast, then you might remember back in April of this

year we learned the story of the worst sea disaster in the history of the United States

Navy.

Or, maybe you've listened to it since then.

I'm referring to the episode talking about the true story behind the movie USS Indianapolis:

Men of Courage.

Or maybe you haven't heard it yet.

Even if you haven't, it's not a spoiler to learn that the day of that tragic event—the

sinking of USS Indianapolis in the North Philippine Sea that marked the end for almost 900 souls—that

day was July 30th, 1945.

Meanwhile, on that same day and completely oblivious to the tragedy going on thousands

of miles away, a much more joyous event was taking place in the small town of Camilla,

Georgia.

That's in southern Georgia about 55 miles, or 87 kilometers, to the north of Tallahassee,

Florida and about 175 miles or 280 kilometers to the south of Atlanta.

The joyous event was the birth of a baby boy named Jon Spence.

Jon would go on to get his BA in English literature from the University of Georgia and an MA from

Tulane University in New Orleans.

After being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War—he was stationed in Germany,

though, so he never saw battle—Jon found his military service could be used to get

grants for King's College in the heart of London.

That's where Jon worked on a PhD, completing his thesis on the works of the 18th century

writer Jane Austen.

For decades, he continued to study Jane's life and works, often studying and trying

to figure out what he was convinced were hidden messages in her letters.

By the time 2003 rolled around, Jon Spence published his first book on Jane Austen's

early life, a book that the world took notice of especially because he was already considered

one of the world's foremost authorities on the life and works of Jane Austen.

Four years later, that book was adapted into the movie that we're going to be learning

about today.

Becoming Jane was released in 2007 and despite only having a budget of about $16 million—not

a ton of money as far as Hollywood is concerned—boasts an all-star cast including Anne Hathaway as

Jane Austen along with James McAvoy, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters and James Cromwell, just

to name a few.

So let's dive into the life of Jane Austen as we compare history with the movie Becoming

Jane.

I'm Dan LeFebvre.

And this is Based on a True Story.

Before we travel back to the time of Jane Austen, we need to set up our game, Two Truths

and a Lie!

If you're new to the Based on a True Story podcast, this is a really simple game.

I'm going to give you three facts.

Two of them are true, one is a lie.

The goal of this is for you to figure out which one of them is a lie.

Are you ready?

OK, here are the two truths and one lie:

1.

Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy really did know each other

2.

Tom Lefroy proposed to Jane, but she turned him down

3.

Tom wasn't the party-loving playboy with a reputation the movie implies

Remember those because I'm not going to give you the lie in the episode.

I mean, that'd mean I'd have to include incorrect information on purpose…haha!

So to tell which one is a lie you'll have to do that through a process of elimination.

Listen closely for the two truths scattered throughout the episode.

Then when you hear those, you'll know which one is a lie.

Oh, and don't worry—we'll do a recap together at the end of the episode to see how well

you did.

OK, one last thing before we get back to the show.

Today's episode was a special pick by Andrea, who became an official Producer of the show

and picked Becoming Jane as the movie to cover.

Here's a quick message from Andrea…

WRITE IN AN INTRO TO ANDREA'S AUDIO

And with that, let's compare history with Hollywood's version of Becoming Jane!

The

movie opens on Anne Hathaway's version of Jane Austen as she's deep in thought.

The camera cuts between a few things, showing us that the morning's dew is still on the

deep, green grass outside.

Then we see a clock.

It's 6:15.

Dipping her pen in ink, Jane starts writing on the piece of paper in front of her on the

desk.

Then the camera cuts as she takes a break from writing to play a few notes on the piano.

Slowly, the camera pans outside the window and up to the next floor and that's when we

see Jane isn't the only one in the house.

But everyone else is sleeping.

After a moment, the music stops and Jane looks at the paper.

Then she goes back to writing, clearly finding some inspiration from the brief stint on the

piano.

Not for long.

This time, she goes back to playing the piano and manages to wake up everyone in the house—most

of whom aren't too happy at being woken up at 6:15 on what we find out is Sunday morning.

Oh, and yes, Jane's father, George, was indeed a reverend like the movie shows.

In the movie he's played by James Cromwell while her mother is played by Julie Walters.

Although the movie doesn't really mention her mother's first name, probably because

it's the same name as Jane's sister—Cassandra.

Her sister, Cassandra, is played by Anna Maxwell Martin in the movie.

There's no mention of a date in the movie, so this opening sequence isn't really something

we can verify.

But still, it's one certainly could have happened because the real Jane Austen was obviously

a talented writer, but she also loved music and playing the piano.

In fact, just recently the Internet Archive released a digitized collection of some 600

pieces of music from the Austen family—many of whom were copied by Jane personally.

She used to copy a lot of music by hand so she could learn to play it on the piano.

That was her personal music collection—sort of like how we each have our own library of

music on our phones.

Except I'm glad I don't have to copy down each song I want on my phone note by note…I

have a feeling if Jane could have access to a smart phone now, she'd say something along

the lines of, "You kids don't know how good you have it these days."

OK, maybe not.

But it was certainly a different time.

Speaking of which, since the movie doesn't ever mention a year, we don't really know

what time it was that Jane Austen lived.

It's clearly a while ago, but that's something we can fix with history.

Now there's a bit of a reason why this episode is being released today—December 11th.

You see, in five days, it'll be Jane's birthday.

She was born on December 16th, 1775.

That'll make this Saturday her 242nd birthday!

Happy birthday, Jane!

But knowing Jane's birthday doesn't really help us knowing when the movie's timeline

begins.

The movie's timeline starts somewhere between 1793 to 1795, making Anne Hathaway's version

of Jane Austin just shy of 20 years old.

Why then?

Well, even though the movie doesn't mention the timeline in the movie itself, there's

plenty of movie reviews that say it's 1795.

Haha!

But I don't know if I really agree with it being 1795.

I mean, I understand the reason why I've seen some of those reviews of the movie saying

1795.

It's because we know from history that it was 1795 when we know the real Jane Austen

met the real Tom Lefroy, who's played by James McAvoy in the movie.

So, yes, Tom Lefroy was a real person.

But the movie's timeline is a bit interesting here because it doesn't really show how much

time is passing between these opening scenes and when we're introduced to Tom.

According to the movie, Tom is a lawyer who doesn't really take his job seriously.

At least, that's the sense we get when we see him partying one night.

We don't see the party itself, but we see him with a few girls and one of his friends,

Jane's brother Henry Austen, and then Tom kisses one of the girls just before rushing

into the court room way too late.

There's a lot of implications there that the movie doesn't actually show.

His uncle, who's presiding in the court room, isn't too happy with Tom's behavior.

Played by Ian Richardson, Tom's uncle in the movie is really only known as Judge Langlois

so we don't learn his first name.

We know from history his first name was Benjamin.

The surname of Langlois is correct as well.

After excelling at Trinity College in Dublin for three years, in 1793, Benjamin Langlois

paid for Tom's education at the beautiful London campus of The Honourable Society of

Lincoln's Inn.

That's where Tom studied law.

So it's possible some of the early scenes where see Benjamin Langlois—who was actually

Tom's great-uncle—before Tom goes to the country could've been before 1795.

That's why I said the movie probably begins sometime between 1793 to 1795.

Tom and Jane first met in 1795, but there's a few set-up scenes before their meeting.

And since the movie doesn't really show how much time is passing between those scenes,

it's quite likely that there were a few years in there.

However, after Tom's misbehaving one day in court, according to the movie, his great-uncle

decides to send Tom to the country to live with some of his other relatives—also with

the last name Lefroy.

Like James McAvoy's version of Tom says in the movie, the real Tom Lefroy was born in

Limerick, Ireland.

His birthday was January 8th, 1776, so he was exactly 23 days younger than Jane.

Although the movie's storyline says that it Tom's bad behavior that was the reason for

his being sent to the country, we don't really seem to have any hard proof of this.

Instead, many historians believe it was more likely that Tom was simply between terms at

university.

One of the common sources for information about the real Tom Lefroy comes from the 1979

publication of Proceedings of the Huguenot Society of London, more specifically an article

in there by one of Tom's descendants, J.A.P.

Lefroy, called Jane Austen's Irish Friend: Rt.

Hon.

Thomas Langlois, 1776-1869.

You'll notice that the title of the article refers to him as Thomas Langlois.

Some others refer to him as Thomas Langlois Lefroy.

Still, according to J.A.P.

Lefroy's article, the Michaelmas term ended on November 25th, 1795.

The Michaelmas term, by the way, is the name for the fall term at Inns of Court like where

Tom was studying law at Lincoln Inn.

Oh, and today that term lasts through Christmas, but that wasn't the case in the 18th century.

J.A.P.

Lefroy's claim was that after the term came to an end, after the long hours that come

from studying law and straining over books in low light situations, Tom wanted to have

a change of scenery to help his eyesight before the next term, which began on January 11th,

1796.

So that's one theory as to why Tom Lefroy ended up in the country.

But there's other reports that combat that claim.

For example, in Memoir of Chief Justice Lefroy, Tom's son, also named Thomas, his father only

had issues with his eyesight while at Trinity between 1791 and 1793.

So while there might be some debate about the specific reasons why Tom came to the country,

the point here is that the story we saw in the movie doesn't seem to hold up to history.

There's nothing to suggest it was a behavioral issue that caused his grand-uncle, or uncle

as the movie says, to send him to the country.

In reality, it's more likely Tom just wanted to visit his family.

Going back to the movie, there's a moment where James McAvoy's version of Tom Lefroy

suggests to Anne Hathaway's version of Jane Austen that she read a book that's, well,

not quite appropriate.

There's nothing really too scandalous by today's standards, but with drawings of topless women

and as the movie says, Tom has a "reputation", and he's clearly trying to impress that reputation

on Jane.

That specific incident isn't anything we can prove or disprove, but if you pause the movie

to read the title of the book Anne Hathaway's version of Jane is holding, you'll see it's

The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling by Henry Fielding.

That's a real book, first published on February 28th, 1749.

It's also a book that was incredibly popular throughout 18th century England and has been

compared by some to Jane Austen's own work, Pride and Prejudice.

We also know that Tom Lefroy was a fan of Tom Jones, but that doesn't necessarily mean

Jane didn't hear about Tom Jones from someone else first.

So even though there's no hard proof I could find that Tom Lefroy was the one who introduced

Jane to The History of Tom Jones, it's an interesting theory proposed by the movie.

That brings us to Tom Lefroy's "reputation", as the movie puts it.

From the parties in London that got him sent to the country to the idea that he introduced

Jane Austen to Tom Jones, a book that did receive some backlash for its originality

in the use of prostitution and sexual promiscuity, it's clear what sort of "reputation" the movie

is implying here.

While there are some reports of this sort of playboy reputation for Tom Lefroy, Jane's

impression of Tom would seem to be something different.

To learn more about that, here's an excerpt from a letter that Jane Austen wrote to her

sister Cassandra:

In the first place, I hope you will live twenty-three years longer.

Mr. Tom Lefroy's birthday was yesterday, so that you are very near of an age.

After this preamble I shall proceed to tell you that we had an exceedingly good ball last

night, Mr. H. began with Elizabeth, and afterwards danced with her again; but they do not know

how to be particular.

I flatter myself, however, that they will profit by the three successive lessons I have

given them.

You scold me so much in the nice long letter which I have this moment received from you,

that I am almost afraid to tell you how my Irish friend and I behaved.

Imagine to yourself everything most profligate and shocking in the way of dancing and sitting

down together.

I can expose myself, however, only once more, because he leaves the country soon after next

Friday, on which day we are to have a dance at Ashe after all.

He is a very gentlemanlike, good-looking, pleasant young man, I assure you.

But as to our having ever met, except at these last three balls, I cannot say much; for he

is so excessively laughed at about me at Ashe, that he is ashamed of coming to Steventon,

and ran away when we called on Mrs. Lefroy a few days ago.

After I had written the above, we received a visit from Mr. Tom Lefroy and his cousin

George.

The latter is well behaved now; and as for the other, he has but one fault, which time

will, I trust, entirely remove—it is that his morning coat is a great deal too light.

He is a great admirer of Tom Jones, and therefore wears the same colored clothes, I imagine,

which he did when he was wounded.

So…maybe Tom was a playboy?

It's hard to nail down for sure…maybe Tom was just putting on a front for Jane.

That's certainly plausible.

There's other records that indicate Tom's own family considered him a bit of a playboy,

but again it's really hard to know for certain.

Think of it this way…how many times in your own communications through Facebook, Instagram,

Snapchat or wherever you communicate with your family and friends have there been things

said about you that might imply something that's stretching the truth?

That's the sort of stuff we have to try to wade through when trying to determine the

truth of history from personal letters.

OK, so that letter was dated January 9th, 1796.

Or was it the 10th?

In my research, I came across a lot of Jane Austen fans and historians who dated this

letter as being January 10th.

The mere fact that there's some who mention the letter was the 10th is interesting to

me as other historians say with certainty that Tom was born on January 8th, and the

letter starts off by saying Tom's birthday was yesterday.

If nothing else, that shows you how conflicted people are over the letters and the events

that are depicted in their words.

In either case, technically it wasn't right after Tom arrived.

I guess you might be able to argue the case that Tom had a reputation when he made his

way to his relatives place in the village of Ashe in November of 1795 but then was "gentlemanlike"

a couple months later.

But probably not.

Unfortunately, a lot of what that means is up for speculation.

And there's plenty of theories out there as to how deep Tom and Jane's relationship was.

Or how shallow it was, depending on how you look at it.

Or even if it would warrant the term "relationship" at all.

This is just my own speculation thrown in there, but when Jane says she could only,

"expose myself…once more" because Tom was leaving the country, that certainly seems

to imply something was going on.

I don't mean to say that sexually by any means, but even in that little excerpt it seems to

imply some flirtation going on with Jane opening herself up to Tom's affections.

So while it's really hard to verify a lot of the specifics we see in the movie, the

overall gist of something romantic between Tom and Jane certainly is…well, plausible.

While it's true there was something there, like the excerpt we just heard from Jane's

letter to her sister Cassandra, it's really hard to nail down exactly how much was there.

Many historians and Janeites—as fans of Jane Austen are called—believe that Tom

Lefroy was indeed Jane's first love.

Or was it just a crush?

Still others believe that it was just a crush.

It probably doesn't help that after she grew older, as Andrea mentioned at the beginning

of this episode, Cassandra decided to burn or intentionally damage a lot of the letters

she'd received from Jane over the years.

That might sound odd to us now—especially for those of us wanting to find more clues

about Jane's relationship with Tom—but when we put it in the context of history, it's

not so strange.

After all, think of those letters like your private communication.

They were the Facebook Messenger, the WhatsApp or the Snapchat of their day.

Although Snapchat automatically deletes messages just a few seconds after they're displayed,

and at least Cassandra kept them for years.

She just had to delete them manually.

As disappointing as it is to have lost the letters, especially since I can only assume

she started by destroying letters with some of the more juicy bits of information in them,

I can understand the reasons why she wouldn't want her sister's private life kept around

for all the world to know.

Going back to the movie, Tom Lefroy isn't the only gentleman caller interested in Jane.

We find out that another man named Mr. Wisley is being set up by his aunt, Maggie Smith's

character, Lady Gresham.

Mr. Wisley, by the way, is played by Laurence Fox.

Both Lady Gresham and Mr. Wisley are fictional characters made up for the film, but their

purpose in the storyline is one that's based in history.

In truth, Jane Austen had quite a few men who tried to woo her.

For example, there was a student of Jane's father named John Warren, who is played by

Leo Bill in the movie.

A lot of historians believed that John had a romantic interest in Jane while others suggested

perhaps they were just good friends.

Or there was a man named Samuel Blackall, who was described as an awkward clergyman

and had a thing for Jane.

Probably the closest to the fictional Mr. Wisley, though, would've been someone named

Harris Bigg-Wither.

He was a nice and well-off young man who lived near the Austen family.

At one point he even went so far as to propose to Jane.

In the movie, Jane turns down Mr. Wisley's proposal.

But the truth is that Jane accepted Harris Bigg-Wither's proposal!

But then, after a night to sleep on it, Jane decided to rescind her acceptance so the two

were never married.

So the result was the same, but quite different paths to get there.

While we're talking about fictional characters in the film, let's talk about Jane's brother,

George.

According to the movie, George is deaf and Jane communicates with him through sign language.

Oh wait, did I say fictional?

George was a real person.

Sadly, though, there's just not much we know about him.

We do know that he was about ten years Jane's elder and in one of Jane's letters from 1808,

she mentioned talking "with my fingers", but we don't really know if that was because he

was deaf like the movie implies.

While that's certainly plausible, some historians suggest perhaps he had some other type of

mental or physical handicap.

Still others say that George never learned to speak, and that he didn't live with the

Austen family but rather lived out much of his life at a boarding home along with someone

who's not in the movie, Thomas Leigh, Mrs. Austen's brother who also had mental health

issues.

Since a lot of what we know in history comes through letters written by the Austen family

and George wasn't mentioned in those letters, there's a lot left to speculation about George.

Going back to the movie's storyline, Tom and Jane's romance ends after Jane finds a letter.

According to the letter, Tom's been sending money back to his family.

Jane, on the other hand, is afraid that if they continue their romance and get married

that Tom wouldn't be able to provide for his family.

Of course, Tom insists that won't be an issue and for a brief moment they think about eloping.

But then eloping would mean leaving everything else behind, and Jane fears the guilt caused

by Tom's inability to provide for his family if they eloped would, in time, overcome their

love.

So she breaks it off with Tom.

Unfortunately, we just don't know how much of this is true.

As we learned so far, there's a lot we don't know about what really happened.

So as far as hard proof is concerned, we're left with the assumption that this storyline

is made up for the film.

Or perhaps a more accurate summarization would be that this is one theory of what could've

happened based on the few pieces of information we have.

What little we do know of their relationship comes from just a couple of surviving letters

between Jane and Cassandra, as well as some information other historians have been able

to dig up.

From that, we know that neither Tom or Jane had much money.

Tom was indeed reliant on the wealth of his great-uncle who had financed his education,

so a marriage wouldn't have been practical monetarily-speaking.

So while the path the movie takes to show those plot points could've happened, we just

don't know if things happened exactly as the movie shows.

We already learned a bit with one of Jane's letters to Cassandra from January 9th, 1796.

We get another peek at the end of their relationship just a few days later.

This is an excerpt from Jane Austen's letter to Cassandra dated January 16th, 1796:

At length the day is come on which I am to flirt my last with Tom Lefroy, and when you

receive this it will be over.

My tears flow as I write at the melancholy idea.

Wm.

Chute called here yesterday.

I wonder what he means by being so civil.

There is a report that Tom is going to be married to a Lichfield lass.

John Lyford and his sister bring Edward home today, dine with us, and we shall all go together

to Ashe.

I understand that we are to draw for partners.

I shall be extremely impatient to hear from you again, that I may know how Eliza is, and

when you are to return.

By the way, if you

want to hear the entirety of these letters we've heard pieces from, those will be bonus

episodes for Based on a True Story Producers.

So, it would seem, that the movie was correct in showing that Tom Lefroy married someone

else.

According to the movie, though, we get the implication that Tom Lefroy was the inspiration

behind Mr. Darcy in Jane's classic novel Pride and Prejudice, which we see her writing at

the end of the film.

Years after their romance, we even see an older Tom come to hear a reading of Jane's

book and he introduces her to his daughter, who he has named Jane.

The final text on screen says that Tom named his eldest daughter Jane.

That is true.

Well, not the meeting between Tom and Jane and Tom's daughter, also named Jane.

There's nothing to suggest that reading took place.

But it's true that Tom had a daughter named Jane.

On March 16th, 1799, Tom Lefroy married a woman named Mary Paul.

While we don't know if she was named after Jane Austen like the movie suggests, Tom's

oldest daughter was named Jane Christmas Lefroy and was born on June 24th, 1802.

Although I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Tom's mother-in-law was named Jane Paul,

so it's also possible that Jane was named after his wife's mother.

That theory seems to hold up since Tom and Mary's first child was a boy they named Anthony

Lefroy, who was born on March 21st, 1800.

However, Tom's father's name was Anthony.

So it's also very likely they named their first boy after Tom's father and their first

girl after Mary's mother—a common thing to do.

But that still hasn't stopped people from considering that perhaps Tom's daughter was

named after Jane Austen.

Tom and Mary would end up having eight children in total, the others being Anne Lefroy who

was born on April 25th, 1804, Thomas Paul Lefroy, born on December 31st, 1806, Jeffrey

Lefroy, born on March 25th, 1809, George Lefroy, born on May 26th, 1811, Benjamin Lefroy, born

on March 25th, 1815 and last, but certainly not least, Mary Lefroy, born on December 19th,

1817.

Sadly, Benjamin never lived past his infancy, though, so many records list Tom and Mary

as having seven children.

Something else the movie's final text mentions is that in her short life, Jane Austen wrote

six of the greatest novels in the English language.

It then goes on to say that neither Jane or Cassandra ever married.

That is all true…well, sort of.

If you've listened this far, I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're a Jane Austen

fan—or at least you've heard of her works.

But there's some who might take issue with the number of Jane's novels being six.

You see, Jane Austen published four novels while she was alive.

Despite this, though, most of the true fans of Jane's work agree that there were six novels

completed by Jane during her lifetime.

It's just that two of them were published posthumously.

But there's no doubt that Jane Austen is one of the most well-known authors in history.

The four novels she published during her lifetime were Sense & Sensibility, published in 1811,

Pride & Prejudice, published in 1813, Mansfield Park, published in 1814, Emma, published in

1815.

As 1816 rolled around, Jane began feeling a bit under the weather.

She ignored this, though, and rewrote the last couple of chapters to a book she referred

to as The Elliots.

It would later be published posthumously under the title Persuasion.

In January of 1817, she began a new novel she called The Brothers.

Her illness progressed, and on January 27th, she stopped writing.

We know this date specifically because she wrote the date at the end of the manuscript.

Then, at some point, she picked up the manuscript again and kept writing.

About eleven chapters later, Jane wrote another date in the manuscript.

March 18th, 1817.

That would be the last time Jane Austen would add to a work that'd ultimately be left unfinished.

By the time April arrived, Jane rarely left her bed.

She had difficulty walking and was constantly without energy.

Her brother, Henry, and her best friend, her sister Cassandra, helped care for her during

her final days.

Sadly, we don't know much about how Jane Austen died.

We know from some of her letters that she was running a fever, bouts of nausea and vomiting

or, as she referred to them, bilious attacks, and aching.

Some of our best estimates are that it was probably either Hodgkin's lymphoma or maybe

Addison's disease.

On July 18th, 1817, Jane Austen became the first of her siblings to pass away.

She was only 41 years old.

As for the book she was writing at the time of her death, The Brothers, we now know it

as Sanditon and it remains unfinished.

It wasn't until after her death that Jane Austen became a household name.

After her death, Cassandra and Henry worked to publish both Persuasion and Northanger

Abbey, the two books she had completed but hadn't published before her death.

Thanks in part to this publication, Jane's works as an author started to gain some recognition.

But it wasn't until 1833, about 16 years after Jane's death, when a publisher named Richard

Bentley included Jane's works in his series called Standard Novels.

Her works weren't the only ones included in this series, but it was the first time Jane's

novels were available at a cheap price—something that really helped catapult Jane Austen's

reputation.

Tom Lefroy lived a much longer life.

He passed away on May 4th, 1869 at the age of 93.

After he passed away, one of his nephews wrote a letter that helped solve a bit of the mystery

about his true feelings for Jane Austen.

My late venerable uncle…said in so many words that he was in love with her, although

he qualified his confession by saying it was a boyish love.

As this occurred in a friendly and private conversation, I feel some doubt whether I

ought to make it public.

This episode of Based on a True Story was written and produced by me, Dan LeFebvre.

To learn more about the life of Jane Austen, I'd recommend starting with the book that

the movie was based on.

It's called Becoming Jane Austen and was written by Jon Spence.

Although, technically, the movie was really just based on a single chapter in that book—the

chapter about Jane and Tom.

But the rest of it is definitely worth a read!

I'll add links to that book and many more resources for you to dive into the life of

the real Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy over at basedonatruestorypodcast.com

And don't forget, if you'd like to get the bonus episodes supplementing this episode

as well as all the other bonus episodes you can do that by becoming an official Producer

Before we get to the answer to the two truths and a lie game, here's another 5-star review!

This one comes from Luke Gray on Facebook and it says:

Been listening to this podcast for a while now and it is really well researched and brilliantly

presented by Dan.

Find out the truth behind all the movies you love.

Thanks so much Luke!

Glad you're enjoying the podcast as much as I enjoy putting it together!

OK, now it's time for the answer to our two truths and a lie game from the beginning of

the episode!

As a refresher, here are the two truths and one lie:

1.

Jane Austen and Tom Lefroy really did know each other

2.

Tom Lefroy proposed to Jane, but she turned him down

3.

Tom wasn't the party-loving playboy with a reputation the movie implies

Did you find out which one is a lie?

The lie is… #2.

As we learned, we just don't have a lot of information about the depth of Tom and Jane's

relationship.

But of what we do know, there's nothing to suggest that Tom ever proposed to Jane, or

that she turned him down.

Of course, one could argue that maybe it did happen and we just don't know about it.

And I guess that's true.

But then again, there's a lot of stuff in history that might've happened that we just

don't know about.

Haha!

Oh, and if you thought it was #3…well, I guess that you could be right there, too.

There's certainly a lot of people who suggest that Tom was indeed a playboy, and maybe it's

true that he just didn't show that side to Jane.

Knowing the truth about things like this is one of the difficult things when our version

of history comes from letters and bits and pieces of the overall puzzle.

Before we wrap up, I want to say one more "Thanks!" to Andrea Hill for becoming an official

Producer of the show and recommending this episode.

I'll admit I hadn't seen Becoming Jane before she recommended it, but I had a ton of fun

diving into the history…especially for a story like this where there's just so much

we don't know, it's fun to

think about what might have been…

Thanks again Andrea!!

Top 10 Must Know Tips In Just 5 Minutes - Fornite Guide - Duration: 4:54.

Hey everyone, my name is Berthen.

As you can see from the title, this video will have no filler, no fluff, just tips that

everyone needs to know in a short amount of time.

So let's get right into it.

1.

Start Gliding Near Your Destination The fastest way to get to the ground is to

sky dive to a point that's almost 1 square away from where you want to land on the map.

Then look straight down while holding forward until your glider opens by itself, then glide

to your destination.

Avoid mountains and trees when looking down, your glider opens by itself sooner if you're

directly above high places.

This way you stay in the air as little as possible and loot as soon as possible.

2.

Pay attention to sound Sound is very important in fortnite, even

more than the standard shooter where you can listen to footsteps and gunshots.

In addition to those, you can also hear things being destroyed, things being built and chest

as well.

Use headphones or earphones to enhance the sounds, and be able to locate where they're

coming from more precisely.

3.

Actively Look For Chest Chest gives you a guaranteed weapon as well

as a good chance of getting shields, medkit or bandages.

So on top on getting a weapon to fight other players, there's a good chance you can start

off with 50 extra armor giving you the edge in the next fight.

Chests can spawn in almost every building, you can also hear them through walls if you're

around 1 floor of them.

4.

Hit the blue circles when breaking things When you're breaking things, a blue circle

pops up around where you're hitting.

Hit that circle and you'll do double damage on that swing, and get double the material

as well.

This is very good to go with tip number 3.

You can land on top of a building that has a chest spawn in the ceiling, listen to the

chest sound, if you hear it, start breaking through the wall by hitting the circles and

you'll get to the chest in no time.

5.

After a fight, don't always loot right away After you win a fight is when you're the

most vulnerable, other players nearby heard the fight, and can get you from a lot of possible

places.

If you got low during the fight, go hide and heal up as soon as possible, even if you looted

a good gun, you'll probably still die if you you're low enough to be 1 shotted.

If you hear footsteps around you, then someone's coming for sure, so you have to fight them

over looting.

If there's a lot of buildings around that people can pop out of, then you can build

a couple walls to safely loot.

Unless you have no bullets left and you need to loot, then make sure you don't get killed

when you loot otherwise the loot would be pointless.

6.

Have Your Pickaxe Out When Looting When your inventory is full and you have a

weapon out while looting, you'll replace the weapon you're holding, to not do that,

have your pickaxe out since you can't replace it in game.

Then check to see what items you want to replace in your inventory so you don't end up switching

weapons you wanted to keep, 7.

Be Mobile in Close Range Fights In the early game, you'll have to fight

a lot of enemies up close especially, if you land in the bigger areas with more loot.

When it happens, make sure you move a lot when shooting because it's very easy to

land shots close range in fortnite even if you're running.

So if you stood still while your opponent moves around, they have easy shots on you,

while you're a sitting duck, with not much more accuracy advantage.

Most close range gunfights are won by the one with better movement.

8.

Crouch at mid to far range fights.

Fortnite's first bullet is a bit unique in that it's not 100% accurate while standing

still unlike a lot of other shooting games.

Every bullet has some bloom, which means every bullet can hit around the center of where

you're aiming.

So even if you're confident in your aim, just press crouch before you aim and you'll

win more longer ranged fights.

9.

Build Walls and Stairs During Fights Unless you catch the enemy offguard and can

kill them fast, you're going to want to be able to build structures to help you win

the fight.

Most of the time, you should build a wall between you and the enemy and then a stair

behind it.

This let's you have cover, as well as get some height, making headshots easier for you

and harder for the enemy.

If the enemy is hiding, you can build multiple stairs to get right above them.

And if you don't think you can win, then run away while building walls to block the

bullets.

10.

Have a Variety of Guns.

Unlike a lot of other battle royal games, you can't just hide in a bush in the end

game, and finish off the last person with a pistol that easily.

Players can build fortresses, make walls when they're shot and usually the last few people

have shields on them making it very hard to kill quickly.

So having a variety of guns for different situations is important, at the very least,

have a shotgun and assault rifle.

Snipers and explosives are a huge plus for that long range fight and building destroying

power, so be active in looting or killing other players for their loot until you get

a good variety of guns.

I hope this guide helps you win more battle royales, like and subscribe if you found it

helpful.

Tell me what other tips you guys think everyone should know in the comments section.

Thanks for watching and good luck in fortnite.

Sir Ian McKellen isn't willing to consider giving up his Gandalf role to a new actor just yet - Duration: 3:14.

Sir Ian McKellen isn't willing to consider giving up his Gandalf role to a new actor just yet

Casting may be the furthest thing from their minds at the moment (theyve only just acquired the rights to a new prequel series, after all), but theres one name in particular Amazon Prime might want to consider when production on their Lord of the Rings TV show gets under way.

Because it doesnt look like Sir Ian McKellen is ready to give up his iconic role of Gandalf just yet.

McKellen and The Exorcist co-star Jenny Seagrove dropped by Graham Nortons Radio 2 show today (December 16) to discuss their West End show, but Graham couldnt let McKellen leave without asking him what he thought of Amazons planned series.

Amazon are doing a TV series of Lord of the Rings, Graham began. Now isnt that annoying? That theres going to be another Gandalf in town?.

What do you mean, another Gandalf? McKellen replied, prompting Graham to ask if that means hes taking part in the series.

I havent said yes because I havent been asked, the actor continued. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it?. Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so Im not too old [yet].

So, there you go, Amazon. Were not sure anyone would be able to live up to McKellens version of the character anyway.

Amazon confirmed it had reached a deal with JRR Tolkiens estate to expand the lore of the Lord of the Rings franchise in a new prequel series and maybe even a potential spin-off too in November, reportedly spending about $200 million to secure the rights.

Everything is still very much early days at the moment, with no scripts, premises, cast or any other creative personnel working on anything thats been officially announced, but one Lord of the Rings star who is ruling himself out of the whole thing is Gollum himself Andy Serkis.

I dont know if Id want to go back into the Lord of the Rings realm, he said. I feel like Ive spent a large chunk of my life doing that.

Ill say good luck and I think fresh eyes are probably a good thing..

Conor Mcgregor Says Whats Next; Michael Bisping ORDERED to Pay $400,000 to Ex-Manager! - Duration: 2:38.

TMZ caught up with conor mcgregor and asked him what he plans on doing next.

He said "a true fight is what I think I'll do next."

The journalist asked him what a true fight is and conor responded "a real fight, mma

is next."

And when asked if he would dabble in the WWE he said Fook the WWE.

At least now we know that the pacman fight may not be happening and he's coming back

to MMA to prove some doubters wrong.

Hopefully.

Michael Bisping is being ordered to pay his former manager Anthony Mcgann, owner of Wolfslair

MMA academy, 300,000 pounds or roughly 400,000 dollars for not being given his fair share

of unpaid fees and expenses between the years of 2005 to 2011.

It's reported that Bisping and Mcgann had a scuffle in the court waiting room during

the case.

Back in May Bisping claimed that his life was threatened by Mcgann.

He was asked how his management team was in breach of contract he said "when they threaten

to kill you."

I did a little more digging and found this article linking Mcgann to a well known gangster

by the name of Stephen Clarke.

Mcgann was being accused by Clarke of funneling money to Wolfslair MMA Academy from a scaffolding

firm the pair owned together.

Mcgann was never held accountable for any of this.

But his association to a gangster and drug trafficker does give bispings claim of being

threatened with his life a little more credence.

Luke Rockhold didn't take what Gastelum had said about him being the easier fight

lightly as he had a response for that comment.

If you want more detail about what gastelum said check out my video on the top right of

the screen.

Lukes response was "I've accomplished things in this sport, whereas little midgets

like Kelvin Gastelum haven't.

I've destroyed Chris Weidman, which he got destroyed by Weidman.

This kid hasn't beaten really anybody and done anything in this sport, and for him to

run his mouth, it's pretty funny.

It's laughable.

He'll find out real quick if he continues his efforts at 185.

I'd slap that kid down real quick.

Real quick."

Kelvin quickly responded on twitter with "I haven't done anything in the sport but I

did KO the 2 guys that shut the light out on him!

Haha."

How do you think a fight between gastelum and Rockhold would go?

Let me know down below.

And according to Bloody Elbow Fabricio Werdum was fined $600 dollars for the boomerang attack

on Colby Covington.

He did fail to appear in court so we'll see if he faces additional fines.

and finally, ufc Winnipeg is gonna be on a bit earlier tonight at 8pm ET again that's

8pm ET.

So tune in and enjoy the fights as this card is stacked!

It's been a long time since you were all mine

And yet I still find ... I can move on

And now here today we've gone our different ways

I just wanted to say ... that I'm sorry

Some things I have done that I'm not proud of

Your devotion I've turned into forsaken love

I pray forgiveness from the holy one above

Carolyn - I'm Sorry

And now you've become somebody else's wife

I wish you a happy and fulfilling life

I offer you these words that come from deep inside

Carolyn - I'm Sorry

So here I go now ... I finally let you go now

And yet I am happy with who I am

My heart is beating ... new roads I'm seeking

Just so that you know ... I am sorry

Some things I have done that I'm not proud of

Your devotion I've turned into forsaken love

I pray forgiveness from the holy one above
