If you've ever looked at the Beatmaps drop-down tab on the osu! website, you may have noticed
a category for beatmaps called Loved.
Well, today we're going to talk about osu's loved system.
In this first episode we'll explain what the Loved system is.
The Loved system was first announced on the 27th of October, 2016, after many requests
were made by the community for a way to give maps leaderboards, much like those we see
on ranked maps.
The maps placed in the 'Loved' category were decided based on votes from the community,
and getting your map loved meant that it held a special place in the osu! community.
The beatmaps categorized as loved have their own leaderboards attached to them, but award
no pp.Having maps placed in this category is a great honor to many osu! mappers, and
is considered an impressive feat by many within the community.
Currently, the only way for a map to enter the category is through a public vote.
Maps can be submitted by anyone through a form, and are later put up for nomination
by a team of "captains" specific to each osu! mode.
'Well,' you may find yourself asking, 'why are they called loved?
They go by this title because the maps in this system are supposed to truly be loved
by the community, and the more people that get involved with osu! and the Loved system,,
the more accurate this will be.
Any nominated map that receives above a 75% positive vote after a week will be entered
into the Loved category!
So, how can you get involved?
First off, you can suggest maps for the category using the google submission form.
Next, make sure you vote in weekly polls for new maps to enter Loved.
And finally, spread the word and start discussions about maps currently up for vote or future
potential Loved maps with your friends or the communities you participate in!
Now this introduction was only for this first episode. In future episodes of this series,
we'll start with showing the maps that are up for voting that week immediately.
Let's go ahead and start off with the standard maps, and remember, if there are any specific
ones you like, please do follow the links in description and vote on them!
Osu!standard:
BABYMETAL - MEGITSUNE by Onisakura T -Possibly osu!'s first introduction to the
now widely popular band BABYMETAL, Onisakura's 2013 map of MEGISTUNE features a variety of
guest difficulties including old FL player BluOxy and now BN JUDYDANNY.
Sitting at a comfortable 142 BPM, this spaced stream map is perfect for alternaters, or
poses a fun challenge for those who wish to try singletapping 284 BPM.
With 448 favorites, this map has withstood the test of time and remains relevant today
after being included in popular community tournament Yazzeh's Summer Cup.
Just don't let the BPM change catch you offguard...
DragonForce - My Spirit Will Go On by DoKito K
-From the mapper of one of the most difficult ranked maps in the entire game comes a harrowing
7 minute deathstream map that truly earns the title of [Relentless].
With over 250 favourites, DoKito's My Spirit Will Go On is a major test of both stamina
and stream aim, and you'll need plenty of both to be able to pass.
Will you brave the storm and conquer this brutal beatmap?
Camellia - Kono Hoshi de.... by Snow Note T
-Another map hailing from the 2013 era, Snow Note's Kono Hoshi de... prevails as an aesthetic,
yet rhythmically complex rendition of one of Camellia's lesser known songs.
Constant doubles litter the map in contrast to long flowy spaced streams to perfectly
encapsulate the serene, yet intense aspects of the song.
It's difficult to emphasize how well-made this map is, especially given how long ago
it was created.
yambabom - Over my head by Zapy K -Zapy has mapped so many incredibly iconic
maps, as seen by his 3 maps already in loved, and Over my head is no different.
This map is one of the first maps that many osu! players ever saw, and despite the massive
changes in difficult mapping since then, it remains playable and fun to this day.
From the 200 bpm jump patterns to the classic symmetrical design, Over my head presents
a challenge, as well as a nostalgia trip, making it a great candidate for the Loved
category.
The Quick Brown Fox - Gotsta Terrify by Smoothie T
- Submitted a few months after osu! classic The Big Black, The Quick Brown Fox's Gotsta
Terrify makes for a high BPM map packed with tricky patterns and fast-paced sliders boasting
275 favorites.
This set features popular mappers val0108 and Foreverends, making it a must-play for
anyone interested in "old-style difficult" maps.
The original highest difficulty is set at a dense AR9, posing a challenge for even the
game's best reading players.
You're a real monster now.
t+pazolite vs C-Show - TRICKL4SH 220 by Necroh K
- TRICKL4SH is the epitome of jump mapping, and for me is the very first map that comes
to mind when I think 'Arles'.
With two 7 star difficulties at 220 bpm mapped by lahphnya and Necroh respectively, the set
offers two very different interpretations of the song, while both feature highly spaced
jumps and stream patterns.
It's worth noting that the Arles difficulty is much more accessible to most players than
his other two loved maps, so give this set a shot!
Kawada Mami - Going back to square one by cRyo[iceeicee] T
-cRyo[iceeicee] continues to astound with yet another classic from late 2015.
After being featured in multiple popular tournament mappools, Going back to square one stands
out amongst typical unranked maps due to its aim-intensive jumps and kickslider kiai section.
Cryo delivers in making difficult, yet satisfying maps to play, and this is no exception to
that.
Thaehan - Doki-Doki by BarkingMadDog K -BarkingMadDog is widely known as one of the
most consistently good high star mappers.
This time he's brought us a map of an osu! featured artist, Thaehan!
Doki-Doki is a spaced stream map, which is much more focused on aim than stamina, with
high spacing jumps as well as winding circular stream shapes that are incredibly satisfying
to nail.
Playing this map is quite the [Adrenaline Rush], if you're up for the challenge.
yuikonnu - Uchouten Vivace by Guy T -Though the top diff sits at a measly 4.72*
in comparison to all the other maps on this list, the 266 BPM and jagged, spaced patterns
make it one of the most intense sub-5 star maps you'll play.
Featured in community tournament Suiji Cup, Guy's Uchouten Vivace remains an incredibly
polished set from 2013 that competes in quality with many popular maps of today.
For those who love 0108 style alt-maps, this is a perfect introductory map for those who
can't quite play them yet.
Nekomata Master+ - Funny shuffle by fanzhen0019 K
-Rounding out the list of loved maps this week is fanzhen0019's Funny shuffle; a technical
map centered around 1/6 swing rhythm and repeated slider shapes which wind and contort to the
groove of the song.
Don't let its star rating fool you: this map poses a unique, interesting challenge
with difficult rhythms and tough to read patterns.
Funny shuffle has inspired countless technical mappers and truly is a classic map.
Now that was all for the standard maps, lets check out this weeks mania maps.
And even if you're an only standard player, please give viewing these a shot, as we will
continue to have descriptions for all the different maps!
Osu!mania
Reizoko Cj - CirnoRHTL by Nivrad00 -Returning from Loved Community Vote Round
4, our first featured map is a very well known map to higher level competetive 7K players.
CirnoRHTL is a map that was featured in semifinals of 2016 7K MWC, as well as in [the] 6th Insane
Dan skill tier mapset.
It's a very brutal breakcore chart with super heavy layering, and dense, irregular rhythms
which make this map very tough to perfect..
It's also no equipped with an especially sadistic SV diff, appropriately called "Impossible"
which nicely showcases just how creative and cruel Nivrad00's charting can be.
Chroma - sink to the deep sea world by LeiN -Initially featured in the first round of
the Loved Captain's Pick, LeiN-'s map was a victim of being up against a generally stacked
group of maps, falling short of the threshold by just under 1%.
The map is a great balance of technically accurate and difficult in terms of playability,
boasting some intense 1/8 bursting in the back third of the map, while having a good
structure of pattern redundancy in a way that is noticeably accurate.
Challenging, but well-composed, and worthy of being played by a wide variety of skill
levels.
ikaruga_next - Mirage by inteliser -Featured in 2016's 4K MWC finals as a free-mod
pick, Mirage is a rather difficult map that aims to test multiple long-note capabilities.
inverse reading, difficult release timing, dense/disjointed LN, and stream LN are all
found in sections throughout, forcing LN players to be well-rounded if they want to succeed.
ETIA.
- Firestorm by PiraTom -While not featured in any official tournaments,
PiraTom's Firestorm is a two-difficulty LN map, featuring a guest difficulty by inteliser,
that is noticeably popular within the community; back in 2015, Pira's LNavity difficulty gained
some notoriety after being featured as a warmup in the same year's 4K MWC, and quickly became
-the- map to be good at.
Shortly after, inteliser's guest difficulty was added for those who wanted to satiate
their long-note thirsts with something a bit more rich.
Both difficulties contain complex, but visually appealing LN patterns that are tough, rewarding
to play.
Lifeformed - Chloroplast Skin by Halogen- -Chloroplast Skin gained notoriety as being
one of the four songs used for an at-the-time unique qualification system for the popular
Springtime osu!mania Free-for-All tournament; physically, the map is not demanding in the
slightest, making it potentially approachable to somewhat newer players - however, it is
exceptionally difficult to master with frequent but fitting SV usage that is coupled with
difficult rhythmic snaps, and an overall difficulty of 10.
Despite being only 2.5*, there are no known/verified SS-ranks on this map.
D.B.O.Y.D x Kommisar - Interstellar Retribution by ExVeemon
-The Australian LN savant ExVeemon, previously known as MasterSonic10, delivered a brutally
difficult map for Kommisar's popular Undertale remix, Interstellar Retribution.
This marathon length map was featured in the 2016 MWC 4K semifinals as a tiebreaker, and
rightfully so.
This map requires exceptional control, and solid reading and jacking capabilities to
conquer, and its unrelenting pace is extremely taxing for anyone aiming to achieve great
accuracy on.
The Flashbulb - Passage D by Agka -Returning from Loved Community Vote Round
3, we have a very technical chart from Agka, an SV pioneer in osu!mania.
This 6k chart features a wide variet of patterns neatly accenting the song's erratic nature
with loads of nasty bursts, tough transitions and a couple of jack as well.
It's a hard and high quality chart that definitely deserves it's shot at Loved once again!.
xi - World Fragments by Evening -Returning from the Captain's Pick Round 3,
a Very charming piece of beatmapping, nearly 11 minutes of an amazing, challenging, fun
pianocore marathon which is entertaining for the entirety of it.
Littered with not overly aggressive SVs, neat LN patterning, heavy chords, bursts, short
jacks and standard issue chordstreams.
It's a tightly wrapped package of fun that keeps slowly unwrapping for the entire 11
minutes.
A good vote for all the marathon lovers out there!
Paraoka Feat.
Iku Akume - Chaosmaid by Ripazhakgggdkp -Returning from the Captain's Pick Round 3,
this is probably the most iconic charts within the community (at least the western one) of
the very early days of osu!mania.
A 7K MWC 2014 Finals chart, a true jewel of the past with a unique style, a mix of LNs,
SVs, minijacks and long super fast bursts which make for a very interesting challenge
even today.
This is a map everyone should try at least once to get the taste of it.
Vote for this if you're a lover of classic, old charts!
Yooh - Electronic Sound Lab by XeoStyle -Returning from the Captain's Pick Round 3,
Electronic Sound Lab is quite possibly one of my favorite charts to come out of the 4-key
side of osu!mania.
The highest difficulty features gratuitous usage of SVs, but they are used quite fairly
and in a way that is very intuitive and easy to learn.
It is also the easiest map out of the 4-key selections, making it approachable to those
who might not be quite as adept in performing higher level content.
It's been featured in numerous tournaments, and has generally been accepted even by those
who don't quite consider to have those kinds of maps in their wheelhouse.
Now moving over from mania over to the taiko maps!
Osu!taiko We start off with: Excision - Live Wire by
-Kriston- -If I can say one thing about Live Wire it's
that nothing else has ever been like it, before or after it's inception.
Truly one of the wholly unique maps of the taiko community, it features a genre not typically
explored in the Taiko community, Dubstep, but also a fun, nontraditional and liberal
use of Finishers, Sliders and spinners.
This is the kind of map that happens when a creative mapper doesn't follow all of the
rules and has a true vision for what's fun!
Whispered - Fallen Amaterasu by lolcubes -Fallen Amaterasu's got a little bit to offer
for everyone!
The first thing you might notice about this map is the really well done custom hitsounds
that lolcubes has employed, but that is not to write off the fact that the map has very
beautiful streams and a strong sense of building up to an awesome finish.
You really get to feel like the drummer, on all difficulties as well!
This map is definitely great at showing lolcube's experience in mapping for fun rather than
difficulty, and I would personally consider this one of his best maps!
IOSYS feat.
Takatsuki Sakura - Seiya no Special Shooting Star by Nwolf
-Only a peculiar mapper like Nwolf could map a peculiar song like this.
Well, when this was put into the Loved voting the first go around, it was way past christmas,
but hey, now we're only a few weeks away!
But don't mistake this for a run of the mill christmas song, this features heavy structural
and rhythmic changes throughout the song, spanning even a couple genres, and the map
reflects this by shifting SV and snap count seamlessly with it!
witch's slave - Daraku no Sono by Ryui -A veteran taiko mapper, Ryui is one of the
names people might not likely have ever heard but should pay attention to, as he's responsible
for some of the greatest graved maps in the whole community.
Going largely unappreciated, this map of his holds such fun and varied patterns and streams,
but the main part that will draw you into this map is the long 1/6 streams which aren't
typically seen done so well and thought out.
A great song and a great mapper hook up and create a criminally underrated map!
Exceed3rd - Intersect Thunderbolt-Remix by Jing
-Another legendary map in the community from an older day, this features some of the crazy
"hard" mappers from long ago, like Jing and Firce777, this map really became like a "If
you pass it you're a god" kind of thing.
These days, again, maybe it's not so hard, but the quality stands up highly with Collapse
and Firce's difficulties still being highlights of it all.
There is some level of difficulty here for all players looking to improve!
tarolabo - eth ken by _yu68 -The main diff on this map is, for lack of
a better term, a complete mind-fuck.
If you're coming from standard and looking for a comparison, think of it like playing
any map with the Easy mod on.
Very complex rhythms and a very slow SV combine to make this a true challenge to those who
think they can simply read things.
Add hidden or easy to this and you're begging for something to make you throw your monitor
out the window...
But luckily there are other diffs that don't have this slow SV!
They are so kind!
DJ Noriken ft. Yukacco - Lucent (JAKAZiD Remix) by morijo-
-Well this one is quite a special case.
You can't help but feel bad at the fact that Lucent was in the polls FOUR TIMES and each
time failed to reach Loved status.
This map features a fantastic storyboard which is necessary to play the map.
Not unlike the Aspire maps, it is creative and fun, with a lot of maps spawning from
it afterwards using it's wealth of creative ideas.
For as creative and fresh it was, maybe it just simply needs some historical background
so that people vote it!
So in my opinion, morijo- deserves this one, guys.
DOUBLE IMPACT - DOUBLE IMPACT by 7odoa -Featuring both standard and taiko sets, the
taiko sets were handled by Sayaka- and this is another one of those maps that needs a
bit of historical context.
It was really popular for how fast it was and how difficult it was at the time, and
some of the old players can tell you their experience with a map like this.
It's incredibly fun with some longer streams that can really test a players speed, but
nothing too complex that it overwhelms the average player.
Check this one out, for sure!
Fleshgod Apocalypse - The Fool by LZD (http://osu.ppy.sh/s/442451) -A very, very stamina draining map from LZD.
LZD is a great mapper known for things like this, like his ranked map Jikiniki.
His use of long, simple streams in this map elevate it beyond simply just a "metal map",
as it is very fun to play and practice on!
The kiai features an awesome don heavy stream with kats that complement the great vocals
for this track, it definitely deserves to get into loved!
AKIAKANE - Hankyou no Barrier Seed by _yu68 -And now for the fastest map on this list,
this is one of _yu68's best maps.
But it's going to take some intense training!
With a constant bpm of 285 this one might just break some players with it's dense kiai's
and complex rhythms.
A great, intense song is complemented by a beautiful map that knows when to slow down
and speed up the pace, this will be a challenge for fast players to FC!
And for the last gamemode we have the osu!
Catch maps!
Osu!catch LeaF - Evanescent by Krah
-Crystal's deluge is a technical beatmap with patterns that make you snap to the fruits
while keeping a nice flow throughout spec's overdose is a tap-style beatmap with
interesting yet easy stream patterns.
Overdose feels somewhat dense for it's AR and with interesting stream patterns it will
make you keep careful control of your catcher.
goreshit - Satori De Pon! by eldnl -An old classic from eldnl that many older
players will fondly remember, with symmetrical mapping and a fast pace.
Ryu* Vs. L.E.D.-G - PARADISE LOST by Kuzino -Another old classic, this time from Kuzino,
featuring lots of tough to handle edge-dashes and precise hypers that will surely test how
well you can control your catcher.
ZUN remixed by LeaF - Resurrection Spell by osu_gangster
-Numerous toe-tapping BPM changes and rhythm switches serve as the backdrop for this energetic
offering provided by osu_gangster (now more well known as Chara).
The real interest here is the [Hourai Doll] difficulty, which was featured in the osu!catch
2016 World Cup, featuring blindingly fast slider transitions, and a varied mix of flowing
and twisting streams, this map will pose an excellent challenge to experienced players.
NOMA - Brain Power by Razor Sharp -Despite the obvious meme status of this song,
this map plays like a pretty standard map of it's difficulty until the chorus, focusing
mostly on tap dash patterns, not terribly challenging but an interesting map to play
through regardless.
Mabinogi - Uroboros 9236 by ZHSteven -Coming from ZHSteven, one of the most influential
mappers in osu!catch, this map is fast paced with lots of stairs and stacks that will prove
to be a challenge to even top players, being a map featured in the finals of the 2015 CWC.
Masa - Kitsune no Yomeiri by Minky -This extremely challenging map from Minky
is extremely fast paced at 240bpm and will keep you going back and forth while dashing
almost constantly, only allowing you to stand still during the very short breaks sprinkled
throughout the map.
Blank Banshee - WAVESTEP by 119410501 -A unique take on mapping in a relatively
unexplored genre in osu!catch, 119410501's WAVESTEP provides an excellent example of
2B and other "Aspire-like" mapping techniques such as branching sliders, objects within
other objects, stacked notes and more.
These ideas are all executed such as to be challenging but not unfair to the player,
and are presented to a relaxing vaporwave backdrop.
GReeeeN - Shinobi by _Asriel -Here is a full 6 difficulty set ranging from
Cup to Deluge by _Asriel, this song is very upbeat with the top difficulty consisting
of mostly tap dash patterns, this should be a fun experience of many players as well as
the lower difficulties providing something for players of all skill levels.
After over 2 years of failing to get ranked, hopefully this map can find it's home in the
Loved section.
void - Club Ibuki in Break All by Drafura -A long abandoned and incomplete set from
Drafura, while nothing exceptionally special, many members of the community have enjoyed
this map and would love to see it added to the Loved section.
Chroma - Hoshi ga Furanai Machi by LeiN- -A beatmap that has undergone numerous iterations
and evolutions over the years, but now seems to have found time to rest.
The present version, a three-way collaboration between mapping titans Spectator, CLSW and
Ascendance, showcases seemingly endless streaming patterns of all conceivable varieties.
Though many patterns are relatively simple to read and follow initially, the difficulty
ramps up with each section posing a true test of catcher control and stamina.
Mili - A Turtle's Heart by Krah - In this 3 minute long Salad-Rain mapset,
Krah presents an interesting take on 1/3 and 1/6 rhythms, marrying smooth flow on vocals
and sharper drum patterns excellently throughout.
Despite numerous teases since late 2015 for a return to the Qualified section, this sadly
seems highly unlikely, and so Loved status would therefore give this map the recognition
it deserves.
Charlie Chaplin - Let Us All Unite! by VelperK -While this isn't known by much of the newer
community members, this a very interesting set by VelperK, full of very precise jumps
that can very easily trip you up if you don't stay focused.
Goose house - Sedan Girl by mingmichael -An community favourite long before its memorable
inclusion in the 2016 osu!catch World Cup Group Stage, mingmichael's signature snappy
flow, varied rhythm usage and vertical slider patterns shines through in this 4 minute map.
This one is sure to reprise the hype and enjoyment shared by those who participated in CWC2016,
allowing it to be experienced once again by a new group of aspiring players.
Kawada Mami - Break a spell by wairo -Featured earlier this year in the Quarterfinals
of the 2017 CWC, this guest difficulty by Furely would be a great addition to the Loved
section, with patterns ranging from streams, to platewalks and lots of quick direction
changes, this is a very fun Overdose that will keep you on your toes!
Kobaryo - Attention Whore Magic [feat.
kyou1110] by Withered Lotus -A 3 minute breakcore tour for those wishing
to punish their fingers, courtesy of Withered Lotus.
Precision is taken to the extreme here, with rapid alternation between rhythms featuring
different snapping, spacing and flow.
Very little room is available for error on the multitude of cross-screen jump patterns
and stacked streams, so challenge this one at your peril!
