- Christmas time's a really fun time of year,
and it's really nice to share our holiday festivities
with our four-legged family members.
In this video we're gonna show you how to make these
incredible Christmas cookies for your dog.
And hang around to the end, because we're also gonna
show you how to make this amazing dog-safe icing.
I'm Ken Steepe, this is Kayl McCann.
Welcome back to McCann Dogs.

Now Kayl's in the kitchen with me today,
and we're gonna be making these amazing
Christmas cookies for your dogs that have icing,
which I'm really excited about
because Kayl knows how much I love icing.
- Like dog icing or human icing?
- It's for dogs, yeah.
It's gonna be pretty cool.
- Can humans eat it? - Probably.
We'll find out.
- I'm like asking for Ken's sake.
- So for the recipe today, you're gonna need
two-and-a-half cups of whole wheat flour,
one teaspoon of baking powder,
one cup of natural peanut butter,
and I know there are some conversation about peanut butter,
but go with a natural peanut butter,
it's better for your dog anyway.
So one cup of natural peanut butter,
one cup of water, two tablespoons of honey, and one egg.
Okay, so to begin, we're gonna add our
two-and-a-half cups of whole wheat flour.
I'm gonna get Kayl to do that.
Now, if your dog has an allergy to wheat,
you can always substitute like a rice flour
instead of the whole wheat stuff.
And it's gonna be a little bit different consistency.
When you end up, it might be a little bit
wetter of a consistency.
It'll take you a little bit longer
to get the dough stiffened up.
But it's an alternative that can make this wheat-free,
so that's something you can definitely use.
Next in goes one teaspoon of baking powder.
Now, we're gonna mix all these dry goods together first.
We went to our bulk barn, local bulk barn
and grabbed all these things in bulk.
But I'll try to find links
and I'll put them in the description below
so that you can find all these things.
As you're watching this video,
you can order them and make this recipe yourself.
So the next ingredient to go in is the egg,
and this is always fun to watch Kayl crack the egg.
Now, will she get any shell?
- Do you think I am the better egg cracker or you?
- We're about to find out.
- I guess there's only one egg,
so we're gonna have to go with me.
- I'm a terrible egg cracker.
Oh, not too bad.
(groans)
Oh, I feel like I'm the winner.
(laughs)
all right, so we're gonna start
to combine these all together.
It's fun that Kayl and I get to do this together
because we don't often,
we very rarely bake together.
- By very rarely, he means never.
- Yeah, sometimes we'll bake independently,
but rarely together.
So now that we've got this mixed up a little bit,
we're going to add our peanut butter.
We use an all-natural peanut butter,
and the thing you need to remember
about natural peanut butter is that
it needs to be refrigerated.
But you definitely need to stir it before you use it.
This is so incredibly oily when we first bring it out that
if you were just to skim the top
and make sure it's stirred thoroughly before you add it.
We're just gonna add that to the other ingredients.
All right, as Kayl starts to mix
that all together, I'm gonna add that one cup of water,
and we're really looking to get a thicker consistency.
We're gonna need to roll this out,
so it's got to be a pretty stiff dough.
It's gonna take us a little bit to get there.
We still have to add the honey to the recipe as well.
Now here's where things start to get even more delicious
because we're gonna add our two tablespoons of honey
to the cookies.
Can you grab that tablespoon there, Kayl?
Try to get this open without making a gigantic mess.
Go ahead.
We've decided that we have a pretty good workspace
at the end of the island here.
So Kayl's just gonna spread
some of that whole wheat flour around to give us
a nice area to work.
And something I was just thinking is that,
it's funny that we like make more treats for the dogs
than we do for ourselves.
- This is true.
- Yeah, we rarely bake for ourselves.
- I like to eat treats.
I don't necessarily like to make them.
- Well, anybody knows me knows that I have an incredible,
an awful sweet tooth,
and that's why this recipe I get so excited about,
because we're actually gonna be putting icing
for the dogs on these cookies.
So we'll just roll our cookie dough out a little bit.
Flatten it out.
- I wish it was actual cookie dough.
That's my favorite part of making cookies,
is eating the cookie dough.
It's also my favorite ice cream.
Did you know that? - Yes, oh, I did know that.
So you want to flatten this out
until it's about half an inch thick.
All right, now something I forgot to mention
I guess at the top was that you're gonna need
cookie cutters, obviously, or you could cut your own shapes
out of this, but we've chosen three different
cookie cutter shapes.
We've got Christmas tree.
- Star.
- And candy cane.
I'm excited about doing the candy canes.
So now Kayl's gonna put these in the oven
at 350 for 20 minutes or until they're golden.
For the icing, you're gonna need one half-cup of
plain Greek yogurt, one half-cup of tapioca starch,
and two to three teaspoons of low-fat milk.
So for the sake of saving time,
we've put the half-cup of tapioca starch
in each one of these bowls already,
and Kayl's gonna add the half-cup of Greek yogurt.
Now, you might wonder why we are doing
different bowls of the icing sugar, but
we want to decorate our cookies
with different colored icing,
and the way that we're gonna do that is by
making these three different bowls of icing.
All right, so next goes two to three teaspoons
of low-fat milk in each one of our icing mixtures.
I know people that like bake are probably horrified
when they watch someone do something like this,
but I'm actually gonna start with two
because it's better for us with these tiny little cookies
if the icing is a little bit thick.
So we've got green and red food coloring today.
I urge you to go out to your local health foods store
and get like natural food coloring.
There was some talk about people weren't sure
whether food coloring was safe for dogs or not.
Be sure that it is.
There's very few food colorings that aren't safe for dogs,
but a surefire way to get stuff that's
okay for your dog to have
is to go to your local nature food store and get it there.
I'll see if I can find some
and I'll post it in the links below
if we find anything on Amazon
that would be easier for you guys to get.
♪ I'll spend all this Christmas with you ♪
So we're gonna put icing on the cookies now,
and I'll bring the tray over,
and keep in mind, it's kind of hot.
We'll just sort of spread our cookies around here.
We put them on the wax paper
because we're gonna put icing on them,
that icing on them in just a moment,
and it'll make quite a mess.
So I went out to one of our local shops
and grabbed a couple little plastic piping bags.
Now, they're pretty inexpensive,
and I thought they would do the trick for us
putting the icing on each of these cookies.
Now, sort of to keep in mind,
when you're using the icing that we talked about
in this recipe,
you need to move quickly because it hardens pretty fast.
It gets stiff really quickly.
So as soon as it's ready,
make sure that you've timed things out
so that your cookies are ready
when you're done mixing your icing
so that it can go right on those cookies.
And now for the fun part.
We're gonna decorate our cookies.
